While vacationing in Bar Harbor we enjoyed a meal at Royal Indian. I ordered the Chicken Korma and it was beyond the best Indian food I've ever had. I would come back to Maine just to eat this again. The buttered naan bread is warm, soft and hard to stop eating. We enjoyed outdoor seating in beautiful weather. Host was friendly and great at making recommendations and accommodations. Great authentic Indian food as Someone who comes from eating Indian food from North Jersey which has some of the best Indian food on the entire east coast. This place has food better that some Hindi mothers. The spice levels were on point, unlike some other places that like to tame their stuff down for people with boring palettes. If I can recommend a dish I would go with the lamb korma as something that has all the right hints of sweet and spices while still being rich enough to hit all the right spots on those tastebuds. All their food is great though yogurt is spot on as-well. A lot of places mess up at such a simple thing but this place does not. It really comes down to the little things like that and Royal Indian stays on the top of my list due to their attention to detail. read more

I have traveled to and love Indian food. I have been to many Indian restaurants in the U.S. and abroad. But this was the worst experience I've ever had. I ordered the dal which was good, the kachumber salad which was ok, and the tandoor lobster which I was super excited about. The lobster and biryani rice arrive and looked amazing. I picked out the lobster tail meat and placed it on the rice but when I took my first bite the rice was so hard it stuck to my teeth and the lobster was so chewy I had to remove it from my mouth. Those textures together were horrible! And the flavor was sorely lacking. When I called the husband owner over and explained I could not eat it because it was too chewy, he acted like he didn't understand and just stared at my plate. I reiterated I couldn't eat it and he went to get his wife. I explained the same to her and she stated repeatedly it was a loss for them and that I would have to pay at least 1/2 the market price (I still had no idea what the cost was at this point). I explained that I could not pay for something I could not and did not eat. The man pointed to my plate and said I had eaten most of it, noting the meat missing from the tails. I showed him the meat was still sitting on top of the rice, including the pieces I removed from my mouth. She insisted I pay 1/2 market price and that it was a loss and he asked me to leave. I told them I wanted to pay for what I had eaten (the dal and a few bites of the salad), showing them the cash, but he waved his hand and asked me to leave. This went back and forth including them calling the cook out who was at a lost...they all tried to convince me that because this was tandoori style cooking, the lobster was like this. I attempted to pay, cash in hand, again but the husband then got on his phone so I walked away. While walking away, the woman kept calling to me saying I needed to pay. I again turned, said I would not pay for something I could not eat and kept walking. IT WAS AN UNBELIEVABLE NIGHTMARE!! read more

What horrendous food!!! Run. We were in Bar Harbor and decided to eat some wholesome earthy hearty indian food & some momos (Techinally Nepali). And in all honesty, the momo was okay. Not amazing, but okay. Then the service, it was also good. We had a kind Nepali man who was patient and polite, courteous and kind. He took his time to explain the dishes. He accommodated our requests for low salt. The service was definitely 5/5, but everything else was a scam. We ordered meat and vegetable curries, and the food was horrible. Everything had been prepared weeks ahead and frozen. The meat proteins were breaking down because of constant heating and freezing. All the aromatic spices that could have been used were either skipped or lost its flavors from the freezing. The onions in the sauce were not glazed properly , and after freezing and thawing, the undercooked onions adopted the texture and text that closely resembled vomit. The goat curry was priced at almost 20 dollars for a small bowl which came with 5 pierces of meat. After eating 2, we left the remaining 3 pieces. The vegetables were similarly priced as well, and we didn't finish them either. At 70 buck, it was the worst dinner I've ever ever ever had!!! What a disappointment. This is what happens when people do not realize that food is at the heart of a restaurant. That decor and service and uniqueness can not trump taste. They are important, but will not win you customers if you serve frozen meals. A 5.99 frozen Indian box dinner from Hannaford shouldn't taste better than food at Royal Indian, yet it does. We realized that there wasn't another Indian restaurant anywhere close in Bar Harbor, but targeting unsuspecting tourists with horrible meals can't be the right business model. Hire a cook. Cook your food in your restaurant kitchen each day. Buy fresh produce in the morning. I know it's a lot of work, but that's the kind of sincere effort that customers demand when they pay 20 dollars an entree. You are lucky that most of your customers are tourist who immediately leave and don't have the time to bad mouth you. You are also right next to the most successful restaurant in town and see how fresh and full of taste their food is. This winter, drive to Boston and visit different indian restaurants. Make sure to stop by Punjabi Dhaba. You realize that your food is no where close to basic restaurant quality. read more

Being an Indian we knew the taste of Indian food however food served here ( shahi paneer, channa and palak paneer) is worst than anyone can cook. Infact it was not having any gravy. Shahi paneer was dipped in sweet water with turmeric. Staff and Management is completely ignorant towards customer request. We asked for a table of 4 and there was table available but they chose to make us sit on a smaller table with four chair. read more

Went to Royal Indian last night, it was almost 30 minutes before closing, but the took us right away. We ordered Momo, veg and chicken Pakora and Samosa. All came out quickly, hot and flavorful. We also had an order of chicken Vndaloo and saag. One of the better Indian restaurants I've been to in my life. The prices are also very reasonable. Food is aggressively mediocre, portions are way too small, and the lack of competition provides them no incentive to get better service or food wise because they're the only Indian restaurant in town. We placed an order at 4pm for an 8:30pm pickup. When we arrived we were told it would be "another 10-15," that turned into an extra 45min wait. When you walk up to the restaurant you can notice that the service is chaotic, specifically there are servers who are not checking on tables and some are even chatting up with one table for long periods of time. The servers end up taking the brunt of unhappy customers because management is nowhere to be found to try to temper the situation. We were around plenty of people who'd been waiting for over an hour (one group almost 2hrs) to get their food. As a former bartender and server, I would give the benefit of the doubt to a restaurant being overwhelmed with the holiday rush but the fact that we placed our order 5hrs prior to actually receiving it makes it inexcusable. read more

The owner was being a coward hiding inside the kitchen, while the poor servers had to field angry customers like us (there were a lot of others who had to wait long time too). Don't accept orders if you can't prepare it in time. There's no shame in saying no. Also, the food sucked. Palak paneer was sweet, the dal tadka was not fully cooked. In my experience, it is hard to find good, authentic Indian restaurants outside of major cities in US. Some of the small town ethnic restaurants tend to carry deceptively high ratings since their patron haven't had better. Royal Indian in Bar Harbor proved to be an exception. We ordered Chicken 65, butter chicken and Chana masala. All the dishes hit the mark on flavor especially the Chana masala which had a homestyle feel to it. I moved to Maine from central California over a year ago. I love everything about living here. The ONLY thing that was missing in my new life was good Indian food (although I can make a mean korma and tikka masala myself). I put off driving down to Bar Harbor to eat at Royal Indian because I thought "how good could it be, in a tourist area like that? would it be worth the drive?". Finally drove down yesterday, and it was AMAZING. We had momos, chicken vindalo, chicken tikka masala, and lamb korma, and it was all wonderful. Got medium spice and it was very flavorful. Pricy, but I'll do it again for sure. read more
