A spicy noodle dish, but not a lot of flavor.
Howard F.

Another tasty and enjoyable evening at Royal Nepal Bistro (my daughter refers to Nepalese cuisine as one of her favorites, b/c of this restaurant). Everything is freshly made to order, but that generally means that you will be there a while. I do like that, when my food takes a while, they have generally brought us something complimentary, including a little curry soup in a small cup, and this time, some tasty pork belly, to tide us over until our Wild Boar Momos (Nepalese dumplings) arrived. My wife had the Thali ( a variety of several small dishes, including goat curry and some kind of smoky spicy bean concoction she enjoyed also), my daughter had the Lamb Saag, and I loved my Saffron a chicken Kebob. The garlic naan is a little soggy from the butter, but tasty nonetheless.

One of the best restaurants I've been to. I wanted to try a different ethnic cuisine and chose Nepalese food. And I must say that I love Nepalese food. The restaurant is decorated beautifully inside. A lot of small tables for group of 4 and a bar area. The service was excellent. The workers were so nice and very attentive. They would come back and refill the water every time and clean our plates and table really well. The food was excellent. I got the rack of lamb. It came with rice and the lamb was marinated and cooked with their special Asian seasoning. It was delicious and the lamb was not gamey at all. We also got the momo platter. It filled me up! The food is spectacular here. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Great food, awesome service, and cozy vibe! The chicken tasala was delicious. I'd definitely come back to try other dishes

Delicious Nepali food here, we're glad we picked the combo set so we could try a few different things. The rice also stood out, it was so fragrant and complemented the food well. Service was pretty good and it was not too crowded when we came on a weekend evening. Prices are generally pretty reasonable for the generous portion sizes, the momos were maybe slightly more expensive than you'd expect.

The service was so quick and the were so friendly and answered all our menu questions! They even gave us complimentary lentil soup (which we are STILL talking about, it was that delicious!). The inside was so nicely decorated as well! The food was delicious we ordered the lamb momo's and they were the most tender and succulent dumplings we've ever had! We also ordered the bhojangriha chicken, the spicy Basecamp chicken aaloo, the garlic & ginger Naan, yellow daal, and a platter combo. We couldn't pick a favorite! Everything was so delicious and seasoned perfectly - we'd definitely come back.

Service: attentive and kind servers. Very friendly staff present. Food: came here for restaurant week. Choice of appetizers and main. Beverage included, wine, beer or manhattan. Food is always flavorful. I love the wild boar momo. The chili cauliflower had great spices. The main course did come with basmati rice and your choice of naan (if you have a sorry of 2). I had a goat dish and my friend had a curry chicken. Meats were tender and sauces had great flavors. Ambiance: small restaurant but has a nice family vibe. They had some artwork from Nepal that was nice. I've been here a few times and haven't been disappointed yet. Staff is very kind and helpful. Love seeing how full it got around 7pm for their dinner service.

Service was super slow to the point that I wanted to give this place an one-star while sat and waited with an empty stomach. Once the food arrived, I forgot we waited so darn long - the spices , the taste and the aroma...YUM! For your reference, we ordered 2 appetizers, 3 drinks, 5 entrees plus 1 kids meal, 2 desserts. The whole meal was 2 hours....we are quick eaters, btw.

Tucked away in a side street of Vienna! A cute homey feeling restaurant The workers were friendly and gave a few recs when we asked They gave us a free soup appetizer cup which was so nicely spiced and great way to warm up the belly before the meal :) Lamb curry - 3.5/5 super tender soft lamb and a bit of a darker thicker curry sauce. Very good Chicken curry - 3/5 I liked the curry sauce in this one better than the lamb. It was brighter and tasted great! Problem is the chicken was dry Garlic naan - 3/5 more on the doughy little chewy side. Good garlic flavor Chicken momo - 3.5/5 flavorful and very packed with meat filling! The wrapper is soft. A lot of spices packed into the meat and matches well with both sauces mixed together. The orange sauce alone is also great

I was surprised that there wasn't a line out the door on a Sat evening. We had a delightful experience. Nepal cuisine isn't Indian food while there are some similar dishes. We had a delectable experience with every dish bursting with flavor! Nothing sad about Aalo Sadheko; the potatoes were cooked to perfection and seasoned with deliciousness. Laphing is a wonderful street food dish. Warm ambiance and the most friendly atmosphere. Dishes are made to share. Definitely coming back to trying everything else!!

Butter chicken

Everything was great, amazing flavor, best butter chicken ever. The service was great and friendly with a large menu. Quiet dining experience with a family atmosphere, we will be back

Rack of lamb, garlic naan, chicken aloo and a delicious spicy tequila drink!

Such friendly and accommodating staff and service made us feel right at home. The food was delicious with great recommendations from the waiter. We also had the momos which we ate before I got a chance to even take a photo! Highly recommend. We even met and had a lovely conversation with the chef and owner. Lovely spot to have an authentic Nepalese dinner.

After reading positive reviews, we decided to try a Nepalese restaurant for lunch. It was fantastic. The spacious, clean ambiance featured tasteful Nepalese artwork. The food was excellent, not too spicy, and resembled Indian cuisine. We started with complimentary lentil soup, which was good. The Chicken Sekuwa was flavorful and fresh, while the Momo with chicken and vegetables was tasty, especially with its unique sauces. The chicken kabob was perfectly cooked for the main course, and the Tandoori Salmon had an outstanding balance of flavors. We enjoyed garlic naan, which paired well with the dishes, and finished with delicious iced watermelon juice and mint tea. We had a wonderful experience and plan to return to try more authentic dishes.

I don't see dessert menu on website, also are they serving halal meats?

All meats we serve are Halal and are certified, also we are updating our website and soon the deserts will be added to our website.

My favorite dish was the the sukuti sadheko appetizer -- the goat was almost jerky like, chewy (in the best way) but still tender; and spicy. It was served with these rice crispies that looked plain, but had so much flavor on their own. It was a fun & delicious play on texture, flavor and spice. The braised yak was tender and warm with the spices and rice, yum. Loved all the options for goat, lamb, yak, etc. There were also plenty of options for vegetarians as well.

The bar area is big and spacious, and usually sitting at the bar means better, more attentive service. The place was mildly busy, so I expected things to run smoothly -- but that wasn't the case. Right from the start, the bartender wasn't very attentive. We had to ask multiple times just to place our order. For appetizers, we tried the Goat Buttan and the Wild Boar -- we wanted to explore some of the unique delicacies on the menu. Both dishes were interesting, and the Goat Buttan and Wild Boar were actually pretty solid. Unfortunately, the service continued to be an issue. We had to flag the bartender again just to order our entrées and even for simple water refills. We ordered the Mutton Taas and the Yak Chili. The Yak Chili was very good, but the Mutton Taas was extremely dry -- like eating cardboard -- and lacked flavor. Throughout the night, our bartender was constantly absent. More than once, we had to ask another bartender to get his attention so we could get basic service. After finishing our meal, we ordered a dessert, the Gulab Jamun. The presentation looked nothing like the picture -- more like a sloppy drop of pudding -- and the taste was just as disappointing. And again, we had to flag down another bartender because ours was nowhere to be found. Service overall was lackluster, and the tip options started at 20% with no 18% choice. For the level of service we received, 15% would have been more appropriate. I won't be returning anytime soon unless I'm specifically craving their unique delicacies -- which is once in a blue moon.

We ordered - Impossible meat momos 3/5 - they were okay...not the best and not the greatest. The flavor was hiding and the momo did not stay in tact at all. The sauce that they served alongside did not enhance the momo at all. Veggie momo 3/5 - again, they were okay. In fact, I think these were worst than the impossible meat momos. Didn't seem like there was any flavor and just veggies mushed together with salt and pepper. Raita 3/5 - way too liquidy for my liking. I thought they would at least provide rice, but no. So it was just basically liquid yogurt with a couple of strips of cucumbers and carrots. Paneer chili 0/5 - the container literally said 'paneer chili' and after 2/3 bites, I asked my friend if this was actually paneer because it was kind of chewy? Of course it wasn't and it was chicken!! I'm vegetarian so I was so disappointed that they put the wrong item in our order, especially since the container explicitly said paneer. This morning I woke up with a terrible stomachache. The food definitely did not sit right with me. I'm definitely going to skip this place and try Moh Moh Licious next time.

Very cute and quiet! The food was tasty and the drink was pretty good. Service was good and quick.read more

Neither my husband or I had ever had Indian food and never Himalayan but we were open to something new. My first visit was of course the immaculate bathroom, and then we were seated and looked over the menu. We were so happy our choices were so delicious. I had the cucumber salad and chicken jalfrezi (mild) and my husband had the shrimp vindaloo medium spice. Not only were our choices great but the rice was unexpectedly light and favorable. I tried the garlic Naan bread which I had never had before, it was slightly crispy and delicious. The whole restaurant was immaculately clean and our server was knowledgeable, helpful, and gave us a lot of information about the food and the spices. One thing we really appreciated: they asked us what spice level we preferred. My wife doesn't like spicy food, and they thoughtfully prepared everything mild for us without sacrificing flavor. The chickpeas were outstanding -- rich, well-seasoned, and deeply satisfying. The cauliflower wasn't quite to my personal taste, but it was well prepared. And the mango lassi? I've even dined at both the original (Brambleton, VA) and Arlington locations of Himalayan Wild Yak, a spin-off of sorts by two of the original owners. Both of these restaurants deserve your patronage as well when you're in either Arlington or out by Dulles. They are all great. The difference that Royal Nepal brings to the "table" is simple. They never lost that neighborhood feel and they don't take their patrons for granted. With a location down the block from the Birchmere and nestled in the up and coming Arlandria neighborhood of Alexandria, they project both a hometown restaurant feel as well as an adventurous vibe - have you ever eaten yak? The staff are real gems and the ambiance is a real treat from the "pickled veggies" on the window shelves down to the handmade Nepali napkins, this place is a virtual travelog. I can only say explore their menu and you're sure to find a treasure right here in the neighborhood.
