This is a local spot that one really should check out if they are looking for good authentic Indian food with large portions and very reasonable prices. I am truly impressed and after visiting would definitely go back and bring friends/family to try. I have not said this about a business for a really long time. Just remember this is a no frills restaurant so come for the food and leave with a happy stomach. The ambiance is but this place would also be good for takeout. I found this place because it was near my apartment and the reviews seemed ok, so I ordered a pickup order for chicken biryani. It was suspiciously quiet here at 6:45 on a Friday evening, only one table occupied. Why should you order this chicken biryani? If you want your money worth in terms of chicken quantity, I think you'll be happy to see some many chicken pieces. If you prioritize taste, then keep reading. When I got my order I noticed two things very quickly- even from outside the box which was a bit foggy because of steam you could say it's not really biryani, and there was no salan which further bolstered the first belief. It's not biryani at all, it's rice cooked and tampered (tadka) separately and then mixed with chicken before serving. Once home and served in plate, you'll find it really oily. The rice was not fully cooked, you can say it was either half cooked or it was cooked in a previous batch, refrigerated, and just warmed up in pan before mixing with the chicken. When I have leftover rice from previous night, I Sautee some onions, tomato, and curry leaves, and then add rice and turmeric to it. That's what it exactly tasted like, but it also had chicken. As you can see, there was no shortage of turmeric while cooking this. I seriously doubt if all the ingredients used in this dish are freshly cooked on the day of serving or accordingly to commonly followed biryani recipes. Friend ordered food from here via DoorDash and the food was really tasty. Had all my favorites, vegetable samosa, palak paneer, chicken tikka masala, and butter chicken. They all paired well with the rice and garlic naan. The food stayed hot and fresh in the containers for quite some time too. The curries were creamy and delicious. Many years back, I used to go here and always loved the food; I used to get the Vegetarian Thali dinner. But the staff were always unfriendly and made me feel unwelcome. Thus, I did not go back for many years. But, now there are delivery services like DoorDash, and this is probably the best way to go for this restaurant. (For all I know, maybe times have changed, and the staff are more cordial these days; one can hope so.) My favorite dish is what they used to call Navarattan Korma, and they now call Vegetable Korma. It tasted great! The Vegetable Korma was a bit more runny than I remember from the past, but aside from that, it is just what I wanted: not spicy, a good-sized portion, and delicious. On Friday lunchtime Oct. 24th came here for my Birthday and food was excellent as always! Our server, bent over backwards to please us. I had hoped to order the vegetarian Thali, but it is not available anymore. My companion and I ordered a lunch special at $17.99. Choices of chicken curries, lamb curries, besides rice, Naan, Raita, salad and Naan. My friend chose Tandoor chicken, which was plentiful even tho' a half order, 4-5 pieces of chicken plus sizzling onions and spices still steaming hot on the iron tray with wood plate to protect hands. We had lots of Naan, and I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and a side order of Sag Paneer. Everything was so flavorful and cooked to perfection! I got some individual mint chutney and tamarind chutney. My mouth is watering as I write this. We also had dessert, Kheer & Gulab Jamun. It appears the 2 owners of Royal Taj are in disageement whether or not to close permanently? That decision will be made tomorrow Oct. 27th. Please everyone go eat there and fill the place up, before it's too late! There is a "For Sale" sign outside already. I've been coming here since the early 1990's it's always been consistently good food. Other local places couldn't compare! When they took down the elaborate wood panels from the windows it lost some ambience. Unfortunately they accumulated too much dust. I absolutely love this place, and have for decades (I believe at last decades)! Excellent Dal, All the Naans, riata and chutneys, the saags, the curries, cashews and butter chickens! seriously all good. All the rices are cooked to perfection. The customer service is top notch no matter what time of day. The cooks are authentic and fresh, and the smells are warm and inviting. If they had more cushy seating I probably would eat there all day (slow eater). They serve the food and present it nicely and use the Indian serving plates and utensils, which I love. Side note, if you need to feel warm and cozy, studying for n exam, or fighting off that cold you feel coming in- order the daal soup!!! It is So good and healing! It is really a staple of San Jose/Campbell/Los Gatos/Cambrian people. I hope it always prospers. Worth the visit and or dial in/pick up. Not much of an ambiance but that's ok if the food was good. The chicken curry was good in parts but way to creamy, oily, and the worst part was the chicken that had a boiled taste , a little undercooked and was also crazy temperature hot that it burnt my mouth. Just the chicken was hot not the gravy. The naan , rice , basic salad were all good , service was good too. The chicken is what I'm paying for though and that left a bad feeling and taste in my mouth. Also my mouth and tummy both didn't feel right many hours after eating this meal.Too much baking soda ???? . Hard to come back here. The previous reviewer states that this place is closing in the new year. That is a shame because the food has always been great, with very fair prices. My favorites have always included the saag paneer, the chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, and a large variety of appetizers, naan and biryanis. I don't know the reason why they are apparently (?) giving up, but it might have to do with a semi-industrial-looking strip of Camden Ave, near Hwy 17, which would not benefit from a lot of walk-by traffic. Who knows. The neighborhood is perfectly safe and they afford a large parking lot. Give them some business during their last few months and maybe they'll change their minds about closing. read more

We ended up ordering Paneer Tikka Kabab, Saag Paneer, Tandoori Chicken (full) , Kabuli Naan (tasted amazing and fantastic) , Garlic Naan, Chicken Makhanwala and Chicken Biryani along with some Raita. Kabuli Naan with Chicken Makhanwala was the first target and it definitely set the tone for the dinner and for what was to follow. Tandoori items were definitely tasty and had that undertone of what authentic tandoor would taste. The spices and marination was just perfect and we loved every bit of these. Followed that with the Garlic Naan and Saag paneer along with bites of the biryani with Rait and that quite summed up an amazing dinner. It's been a while since I had good Baingan Bharta and Chana Masala from an Indian restaurant. I am so glad I found this place! The Baingan Bharta is blended and flavored really well. It has tomatoes, onion, eggplant, garlic, peas, and I am sure other stuff as well. The eggplant doesn't feel stringy as other mediocre places, and it is cooked well. It actually feels like a nice gravy that pairs well with naan. The Chana Masala was also flavored nicely. It isn't overpowering in the masala, and you can still taste a hint of the tomato and onions that they add in the curry. It looks a bit watery but doesn't taste watery at all. However, the reason why this will not be my #1 recommended North Indian place all of a sudden is because the naan were really subpar. The garlic naan was so hard to chew. It was not fluffy at all. The onion naan had the same story, except a bit better because the onions made the naan a little softer so it made it easier to chew. But the onions and naan were not spiced like it usually is at other places. I will definitely come back for these curries, but maybe not for the naan. I hope the naan gets better so that this will be one of my favorite places from now on! read more

Ordered dinner through DoorDash. They sent me a notice that my order had been picked up by the driver and it was on its way. Half an hour I called the driver, and she said she was still waiting for the order. I called DoorDash, they called the restaurant, and after another ten minutes the food was ready; it arrived 20 minutes after that. I was already unhappy about the long delay, and being lied too, but when the food finally got here it was awful. Dry, overcooked, and cold. We've been trying a lot of different Indian spots recently but this one wasn't a hit. We ordered Chicken Tikka, Chicken Tikka Masala, naan, and samosas. The chicken Tikka was so spicy my mouth was burning and Milk was the only thing I could drink to bring it down. The chicken tikka masala was also spicy. I think my issue with both of these is that I can get on board with spicy, but this was "hot" spicy and not "flavorful" spicy. Just not my cup of tea. The naan was stale when it arrived but a pop in the oven helped it out. The samosas were average but more bready than crispy. I greatly appreciate that they're still open and doing delivery during COVID, but ultimately the food was WAY too spicy for us. When we got there, the lady said that we couldn't dine in. We were a bit confused, seeing as we reached at 8:30 and the closing time showed at 10. Anyways, once we came home and started eating, a few things stuck out. The Butter Chicken's sauce was creamy and delicious, and the chicken was great. This place does have a very decent lunch buffet. There was not a huge selection but it did have a lot of the standard things like palak paneer and chicken tikka masala. I liked how they had pappadam out on the buffet too and they were tasty. Everything was good. I don't think it's as high quality as some other buffets, obviously they used frozen spinach in the palak paneer and canned or frozen green beans, but it was decent. We also got a free starter which was some kind of taco shell like appetizer with two types of sauces. The food was awesome. A full stomach and a full heart is my sum up of our experience at Royal Taj. My beautiful wife and I had just arrived back to the USA after a long airplane trip. My son suggested we stop for Indian food for dinner as we always take him out for dinner after picking us up from the airport. And so away to Royal Taj we went. Royal Taj is located on a busy street and as we entered I noticed an interesting window treatment that allowed those dining to ignore the outside and drop into a tranquil environment. A simple dining setup that is very organized and clean ( my wife later commented the bathrooms were well tended and spotless which is often the 'darkside' revealed at an eating establishment ). We ordered chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, prawn vindaloo, and saag paneer. I won't go into details of these different items other than to say each was a unique, delicate/subtle, and delicious journey into the wonders of authentic Indian food. We all agreed it was probably the best Indian food we had eaten in fact! Beyond the amazing quality of the food was the warm and very attentive and helpful staff. We all felt very much very welcome and at ease with all of our needs amply met. As I chatted with a man clearing our table I said "I have a full stomach...and a full heart". Fantastic Indian FOOD!! We happened upon this place on our way to our hotel and we're so HAPPY we stopped in for a late lunch! We had the Maharaja Royal Feast, and WOW what a FEAST!
