Chicken tikka masala was way too creamy, lacked flavor and spice. The chicken was soft which was the only plus.

Normally we love this place, we've been picking up dishes from there for nearly 10 years. The customer service has never been great, all these years we've just learned to deal with the rude behavior on the phone, and the rude service when we actually pick it up. All because we like the food, and it's reasonably priced. We were thankful that they stayed open during this pandemic. ** But the last time I picked up I was horrified to see the cooks in the kitchen violating Covid regulations. They weren't wearing masks, or they had them down around their chin, face fully uncovered. All I could think, if we get sick, this is why, I nearly threw out our food. I'm sorry Royal Taj, we won't be back until Covid restrictions lift. Please do better. read more

We got takeout last night from Royal Taj and everything was super delicious. I called the restaurant to tell them about it and also their cooking of the vegetables with the Tandoori Chicken. Just 2 weeks ago I had their lunch thali for like $13. Not only do they no longer offer the lunch thali but the closest option is double the price. How did we go from a $10.99 buffet (precovid) to nearly triple once you factor in a tip. Countless similar restaurants have an affordable lunch thali for $9 to $17. I would say 2.5-3 stars. I've been looking for a good Indian spot in the area, and unfortunately the search continues. The curries were very bland. The only taste was spiciness, but nothing robust or deep about the flavor like you should expect from Indian food. I actually thought I had covid for a second because it was so bland. The paneer tikka masala was the slightly better curry, but maybe just because it was spicer. The bhaingan bharta just tasted like veggies with almost no seasoning. I would have been happier with even a little salt... anything.... The naan seemed slightly doughy and maybe undercooked. The pakora were very good actually, and had more flavor than any of the curries, weirdly enough. I know covid is tough times, but I'd spend my money elsewhere. read more

I have been coming here for many years and have enjoyed the food and excellent customer focused service from the staff. My fiance and I went for dinner and we noticed the burning of incense inside, which is a trigger for her Asthma. We decided not to eat there and began to walk out. The server (Manager?) asked what was wrong...I explained. He apologized several times, stopped the incense, and seated us outside (talk about service recovery). He helped us pick out Vegan dishes and even made some special Nan Bread for us. The food, service and overall dining experience was OUTSTANDING! A lot of care was taken to make the food tasty. We brought a relative who can't eat spicy food. They seasoned the food well, but left out the chillis, as requested: Excellent. Ingredients were top-notch, and they know how to do nan. The food was rich without being oily. The vibe of the place is 1990's Silicon Valley Indian restaurant, except that, like everywhere, prices have tripled since then. Service was pleasant. We plan to go back to try the buffet. read more

I have been a customer of Royal Taj for 20 years. I absolutely love their dishes, and as the years go by the food only got better. Ok! So here is my one and only complaint, one of the waiters is as nice as they come, however the other waiter is just flat out nasty and rude! $9.95 per person for the buffet. They had the paneer tikka masala and the chicken korma. My personal favorite is the paneer tikka masala! And on some days they would have Navrattan korma!! I love their vegetarian curries more than chicken and lamb. The tandoori chicken is really good! Not dry or stale at all. If you ask for the garlic naan, they will bring it out with no extra charge :). Soda is $1.50 with free refills! The place is small, the atmosphere is a bit awkward (no music or tv) when there is little people. But once lunchtime hits 12:30-1pm, there's background noises which I enjoy. Our waiter is really nice (there was only one). He was very tentative and made sure we felt comfortable and always refilled our drinks and would bring our fresh naan after we finish a batch. Wash Your Dog While You Eat Some Spicy Delights Food was awesome and deserves a solid 4 stars, however the service and restaurant would be more like two stars so I'll go in the middle. Walking into this small dining room, the overwhelming scent of incense SMACKS you in the face like the aggressive perfume ladies at Macy's. Some could argue they enjoy this aroma, however it was a bit distracting from the wonderful smell of the food for my liking. The host who seats you seems quite grumpy, and when checking on us was "you ready? yes, or no?" in a lovely sharp tone. I had a Soup Nazi flashback and felt a rush of pressure to be ready to order on his return. Chana Masala $5.95 - garbanzo beans in a wonderful blend of spices, spicy enough to get that back part of your tongue going a little bit and I would highly recommend Chicken Tikki Masala $7.50 - chunks of tender chicken in a rich buttery sauce, also great to dip the nan in Aloo Gobhi $5.95 - cauliflower, potato, and carrot in a less saucy but spicy and very tasty dish. If I had this everyday I would always eat my veggies! The Nan bread - $1.50 for two halfs, was a bit too buttery Beer Deal - for only $5.50 you can get a 22oz Taj Mahal beer A day later, reheating all the leftovers in the microwave gave us a wonderful second dinner all for only about $30. I loved their food and will definitely be back to get some of these well priced dishes to take home or sit outside with. Dog Friendly - Three paws for two tables out front where you can eat with your dog, however hang on to that leash as it's right on the busy road and watch out for the sprinklers or you could wash your dog while you eat! read more

Dinner review: Entrees range from $6 and up, however, they do offer two types of dinner combos. I'm not sure what the differences were. We ordered al la carte to try out different things. Lamb naan - delicious, I loved how the meat was smashed into thin pepperoni like slices. Lamb korma - love the creaminess to it and the lamb was super soft. Prawn Vindaloo - I thought it was just okay. Aloo Bangan - Egg plants, thanks to the beautiful, I like egg plant. The dish was yummy. Taj Mahal (650 ml) $5.50 , light tasting beer, enough to fill 2 cups. Good deal IMO. Overall: I was sort of disappointed by the size of the dishes, but the korma and the naan really made up for it. I found this place on Yelp one night that I was craving for some Indian food. It looks like Royal Taj is popular for the lunch buffet, but we ordered some food to go for dinner since I could not possibly wait till the next day to go try the buffet. There are plenty to choose from the menu posted online and so we were able to try some new dishes. We ordered Chicken Korma (chicken curry with light cream sauce), Dhum Aloo Kashmiri (potato cooked in spicy onion gravy) and Prawns Tikka Masala (creamy shrimp curry) and couple of Nan. Total came to only $30 and there were more than plenty to feed 4-5 adults - we ended up with tons of left overs!! Curry here is very "light" in texture and pretty spicy, I can't say what it was different from others but this is not a typical curry that I was used to eat at other Indian places. Since Royal Taj is located next to Foster Freeze, we couldn't flight the temptation to walk to the Foster Freeze to get milk shakes after picking up the food at the Taj. My strawberry shake ended up in my tummy as an appetizer for the curry dinner :) read more

Great place for Indian food. I went there for lunch with a group of 4 people and the total was around 45$. Not bad at all. Lunch is 9.95 per person The restaurant is very small and comforting. Maybe not so ideal for a very large group of people. I love the environment and how it's quite dark in there with the curtains on the windows. The food was delicious. I really enjoyed most of the food options for the buffet. The currys and the naan were amazing. It wasn't too spicy, just a nice kick. I recommend ordering the garlic naan. I also love how they didn't charge extra for all the naan we ordered. There was only one waiter there and his service was good. He filled up our waters continuously and cleaned up our plates after we were done so that we could get more. Overall, this place is delicious and I left feeling satisfied. read more

My friends and I went to eat at this place after a day on the Boardwalk, where thankfully, the people working there accommodated ten rowdy college students an hour before closing time. They made us feel right at home, even going so far as giving us complimentary appetizers and garlic instead of regular naan. There was a wide range of vegetarian options, but I got the butter chicken, cooked perfectly and soaked in an amazing savory sauce. The food may seem a little pricey at first glance, but the portions are big enough to split it with one person and still be full. The service was fantastic as well -- they gave us a student discount and assured us that it was okay for us to not tip, as we were college students! Didn't wanna drive to far to get something to eat and was in the mood for something spicy so i called and ordered for pick up. I ordered Chicken Makhanwala (butter chicken) and Chana Masala (garbanzo bean curry). I did not order any sides of rice or bread as I could easily make it at home. I'm really picky with my chicken so I will say that this was a mix of dark and white meat I believe. I like white meat. But anyway, the flavor was good, it had a nice kick to it and was in a creamy sauce. The chana masala was very good also, with rice or roti, this is a great option for vegetarians! It had great flavor and the spice was not over bearing. I would definitely order the chana masala again. They have a little parking lot on the side of the restaurant, they do have a buffet available which I have not tried. I don't know if this is true but it seems like alot of people might order for pickup because I don't usually see the place full when i pass by it...not for dinner at least. but i could be wrong. Absolute worst customer service ever. The common theme I see among the rest of the reviews is: good food/terrible customer service & presentation. I had been craving Indian food the previous week. On Wednesday (5/23), I was planning on ordering takeout for pickup right after work. Little did I know that they actually close from 3 PM to 5 PM. My fault. On Friday, I planned better (or so I thought) to satisfy my craving. I had planned to leave work early (by 2:30 PM) in order to pick up food. I ordered on their website at 12:01 PM for a PRE-ORDER for pick up at 2:30 PM. I then receive multiple calls around 12:30 PM from Mealhi5 -which I ignore because I believe they are spam. After receiving more and more calls, I decide to pick up. They tell me that they have been trying to reach me to let me know that my order is ready for pick up. At this point, I am very confused and explained the situation to him and how the order was supposed to be for pick up at 2:30 PM. He said he'll call the restaurant to clarify what is going on. I said ok, but I wanted to make sure that when I got there at 2:30 PM, I would have fresh food that was made and not something that has been sitting around since 12:30 PM. He calls me back and texts me saying that my food will be ready for pick up at 2:30 PM and that it will in fact be FRESH food. (See uploaded picture for proof). I arrive at 2:33 PM and tell them my name and my order. The employee then proceeds to tell me that I am LATE in picking up my food. I asked him for clarification and he said I was supposed to pick up over an HOUR ago. I calmly reiterated the above situation to him. He goes in and out of the kitchen a couple of times and several employees are now discussing the situation in front of me in another language (which is quite rude and disrespectful by the way). After 10 minutes of conversation I do not understand, one of the employee just blankly looks at me and says "Here, your order is ready." At this point, I had already felt the bag and KNOW the food is cold. I have had food to-go here before and have even burned my tongue after letting the food sit for over 45 minutes because it is so piping hot. I KNOW the food is cold at this point. I calmly tell him that this food is cold and I would like new, freshly prepared food. He says no, and that the food there is fine. I push back and say no....the whole point of me PRE-ORDERING for pick up is to ensure I had fresh-hot food when I arrived. He kept arguing with me telling me the food there was fine. I've worked in customer service before and know that getting angry and yelling will not get anywhere, so I simply and calmly tell them no it's ok, I would like a refund. Only then did the employee leave for the kitchen and come back to ask me to wait an extra 15 minutes for my new order to come out. I have no idea if they spit in my food, but they made the chicken tikka masala (a dish I have had here before), unbearably spicy to the point where it was not edible.
