Weekend breakfast at Meenakshi Bhavan has the right soundtrack. Tamil film songs at a comfortable volume, two or three tables already into their meals, the steady clink of steel tumblers filling the room just enough to feel alive without tipping into noisy. For a Saturday morning, the energy was calm -- a good sign for a small spot that could easily get overwhelmed. The waitress set the tone early. Warm, unhurried, she asked how we had heard about the place before taking the order -- the kind of question a restaurant only asks when it is still building its crowd and actually wants to know the answer. Filter coffee arrived without delay, hot, no shortcuts. The upma and mini tiffin combo followed. Portions were generous and the food arrived warm. But dish after dish played it safe right up to the edge of forgettable. The upma had correct texture with none of the assertiveness that makes a good upma worth finishing slowly. The sambar leaned thin. The chutneys were there, present and accounted for, doing the minimum. Everything assembled correctly, nothing bold enough to make you look up from the table. Meenakshi Bhavan gets enough right on a weekend morning to be worth knowing about -- clean space, genuinely warm service, honest portions. The waitress clearly takes pride in the hospitality side of things. The kitchen needs to match that energy with a firmer hand on the seasoning. Good enough for a familiar weekend breakfast. Not yet good enough to become a habit. The paintings on the walls that were Indian and Tamilnadu related was great, but the other art work seemed out of place, not sure what the thought process there was with the management. Things where this could improve: Coffee taste can improve (may be sourcing from a different coffee vendor may help, seemed like a standard Narassu's powder from a grocery shop near by that probably was at least a few months old) Chutneys need a certain kick and that was definitely missing. SERVICE - located on Steven's creek boulevard near the Lawrence expressway and Steven's creek intersection - parking available in lot in front - small interior with seating available for small to mid sized groups - ambiance good for a casual meal - service was friendly though not very hands on during the meal - food served relatively quickly MENU - variety of South Indian mains and small bites - all vegetarian - average price FOOD - rava masala dosa (8/10): thin and crispy wheat based dosa filled with spicy potato masala and served with sambar and chutneys. If you are looking for something to change up your standard dosa order, trying a rava dosa here is worthwhile. It is much thinner than a normal dosa and almost breaks apart into mini cracker like pieces when eating it. The potato masala is soft and creamy and not overly spicy. There is also the option to get the same order but with raw onions added inside. WOULD I GO BACK? Yes, it is a nice place to go for a casual meal. read more

This is a new South Indian restaurant where egglicious was there. Not much change to interior we ordered a combo 3 and onion rava. We also asked to substitute kesari for vada as no sweets in my diet. They refused to do that, but suggested can do Idly instead, which I was ok with. We got them Idly was ok, Dosa was not great looks like old sour batter. Vada was decent and all the accompainments were good, peanut chutney just ok but other two chutney and sambar was good, needed little salt though. Onion Rava dosa was total 180, it was well made and they mixed the onion in batter unlike in many places where they dump them. It tasted great . I may just go there for the rava dosa and chutneys. Rava dosa showed what they can become will they? Only time will tell. I am being generous 3 stars for rava dosa and chutneys. read more

New-ish place popped up when searching for dosa restaurants in the area. Got there just before noon and a couple tables were occupied, but place filled up rather quickly after. We got a bunch of things- Combo #2 Ghee onion rava masala dosa Ghee masala dosa Masala tea Everything was absolutely delicious; from the well seasoned and fermented dosa batter, to the sambar and chutneys and potato masala. This is a really good authentic South Indian vegetarian restaurant. If you like dosas and other South Indian items, this new spot (3 months old) is the place to go. It is very clean but is no frills in terms of decor and the food is exceptional. The service is very courteous and kind. read more

I had no idea this was a vegetarian restaurant, but I decided to try anyway. And I am glad I stayed. This is probably some of the best Indian food I've had. I wish I'd taken photos before eating, but it looked too delicious so I forgot. First off, these prices are unheard of. It's like one been transported back to the early 2000s. Second the good was seasoned perfectly with a to spice level that's fit for most people. Usually I find Indian food trens to be a bit on the salty side, but their food was just right. Thirdly, the staff is very attentive and friendly. We ordered a onion rava masala dosa, samosas, and a veg biryani. The onion dosa blew me away. It was very crispy and the potato onion filling was delicious. There are also multiple sauces which were also all great. The samosas were piping hot, though flavor-wise pretty typical (good but nothing special). I'd still order them again. The vegetable biryani was perfectly seasoned and the yogurt sauce payed excellently with it. I'm not sure what the other sauce is but I poured that on generally too. read more

Looks like this place recently opened in Santa Clara/West San Jose bordering where there used to be Eggalicious restaurant here until a few months ago. We walked in to get a quick dinner, restaurant was filled with people which is always a good sign. We ordered Onion chili Tomato Uthappa and a Idli-Vada combo. Both came out really good. With so many south Indian restaurants now available as options in the bay area - I must say this place has lived up to the quality standard. Service was equally good. We recently ordered food from this restaurant because of the great reviews out there. However our experience was really bad. We ordered 2 dosas, 1 combo , 1 idli and masala vada. The food was overall lacking salt. The idlis were rock solid and the masala vada we got was falafel. For the quality of the food received, it was overpriced and not worth the take out. read more

I visited with my family and we ordered five items. Unfortunately, the two items I specifically ordered--Upma and Rava Kesari--had not been served even after 20 minutes. When we checked with the waiter, we were told that the order had never been placed. As a result, we had to cancel the Upma. When the Rava Kesari finally arrived, it was stone cold, as if it had just been taken out of the fridge and served. It was quite disappointing--Rava Kesari is not meant to be eaten cold. Was pleasantly surprised to find a south Indian vegetarian restaurant in West San Jose area. Dining experience was great. We ordered Mysore bonda, plain dosa and rava dosa. Dosas were top notch. The price is very reasonable. But the food is not even close to good. Took the combo 1 for lunch. The Vada was just OK, but the idly was very bad in taste. Needs a ton of improvement in taste.
