This time we again ordered our favorite onion rava dosa along with panner kothu paratha. You know my take on rava dosa, so I will review Panner kothu paratha. Paneer itself was very less as you can see in the photo, but the Parotta was tasting good and can definitely feel that they are made fresh unlike other places where they are dry. read more

Recently visited Meenakshi Bhavan. Food was excellent. Several vegan dishes. Tried their upma idli combo as well as masala dosa. If you are looking for something to change up your standard dosa order, trying a rava dosa here is worthwhile. It is much thinner than a normal dosa and almost breaks apart into mini cracker like pieces when eating it. The potato masala is soft and creamy and not overly spicy. The plus about this place: - food seemed fresh - prices were reasonable - mainly South Indian dishes - they have added a few items to attract others poori aloo and pav bhaji - I enjoy thali - since you get to taste so many items - the ladies serving us were polite Areas to improve: - the South Indian restaurant competition is very hard in the Bay Area - others have more unique chutney and Sambhar - the ambiance is not the focus - some boxes are kept at the end of the restaurant- like a storage - there is a loud TV with songs and dances going on - you have to pay at the counter (there was no rush - wonder how it will be when it's crowded) - the rava masala was crisp but not as tasty This is a hard business - unless you have a unique flare about your place, there are too many strong competitors for this type of food. This is my goto spot for south Asian veggie breakfast. The dosas are first rate. Pro tip- ask for the masala on the side so the dosa stays crispy. Second pro tip - plenty of parking at the back, but take care over the epic speed bumps. read more

Food is mostly on par with several other restaurants catering in this genre in the bayarea. ***LOCATION AND AMBIANCE: they took over the eggilicious restaurant location. Ambiance is mostly nondescript and definitely needs some TLC. The overhead vents had a lot of dirt. ***SERVICE: some very good and kind people managing this place, they are still getting a hang of things as they recently opened. ***FOOD: we got to sample most of our usual favorites. Chef is South Indian so flavors have more of a southern flair. All the chutneys were great, especially the coconut chutney. Sambar was delicious. *punugulu: 3/5: very soft inside and kind of collapsed. Not how punugulu are typically. *rava dosa:4/5: most restaurants struggle to make this dosa. The version here is relatively decent. *combo 4: 4.5/5: this combo had a little bit of everything- dosa, idli, vada, pongal, upma and a sweet. All the items were great. The dessert(rava kesari) was too sweet though in my opinion. *puri: 4/5: this came with three puris, vegetable Kurma and Chana curry. *samosa chaat:3.5/5: though it wasn't bad, I was expecting an explosion of flavors typically expected from a chaat item. read more

Weekend breakfast at Meenakshi Bhavan has the right soundtrack. Tamil film songs at a comfortable volume, two or three tables already into their meals, the steady clink of steel tumblers filling the room just enough to feel alive without tipping into noisy. For a Saturday morning, the energy was calm -- a good sign for a small spot that could easily get overwhelmed. The waitress set the tone early. Warm, unhurried, she asked how we had heard about the place before taking the order -- the kind of question a restaurant only asks when it is still building its crowd and actually wants to know the answer. Filter coffee arrived without delay, hot, no shortcuts. The upma and mini tiffin combo followed. Portions were generous and the food arrived warm. But dish after dish played it safe right up to the edge of forgettable. The upma had correct texture with none of the assertiveness that makes a good upma worth finishing slowly. The sambar leaned thin. The chutneys were there, present and accounted for, doing the minimum. Everything assembled correctly, nothing bold enough to make you look up from the table. Meenakshi Bhavan gets enough right on a weekend morning to be worth knowing about -- clean space, genuinely warm service, honest portions. The waitress clearly takes pride in the hospitality side of things. The kitchen needs to match that energy with a firmer hand on the seasoning. Good enough for a familiar weekend breakfast. Not yet good enough to become a habit. The paintings on the walls that were Indian and Tamilnadu related was great, but the other art work seemed out of place, not sure what the thought process there was with the management. Things where this could improve: Coffee taste can improve (may be sourcing from a different coffee vendor may help, seemed like a standard Narassu's powder from a grocery shop near by that probably was at least a few months old) Chutneys need a certain kick and that was definitely missing. I had no idea this was a vegetarian restaurant, but I decided to try anyway. And I am glad I stayed. This is probably some of the best Indian food I've had. I wish I'd taken photos before eating, but it looked too delicious so I forgot. First off, these prices are unheard of. It's like one been transported back to the early 2000s. Second the good was seasoned perfectly with a to spice level that's fit for most people. Usually I find Indian food trens to be a bit on the salty side, but their food was just right. Thirdly, the staff is very attentive and friendly. We ordered a onion rava masala dosa, samosas, and a veg biryani. The onion dosa blew me away. It was very crispy and the potato onion filling was delicious. There are also multiple sauces which were also all great. The samosas were piping hot, though flavor-wise pretty typical (good but nothing special). I'd still order them again. The vegetable biryani was perfectly seasoned and the yogurt sauce payed excellently with it. I'm not sure what the other sauce is but I poured that on generally too. read more

Looks like this place recently opened in Santa Clara/West San Jose bordering where there used to be Eggalicious restaurant here until a few months ago. We walked in to get a quick dinner, restaurant was filled with people which is always a good sign. We ordered Onion chili Tomato Uthappa and a Idli-Vada combo. Both came out really good. With so many south Indian restaurants now available as options in the bay area - I must say this place has lived up to the quality standard. Service was equally good. We recently ordered food from this restaurant because of the great reviews out there. However our experience was really bad. We ordered 2 dosas, 1 combo , 1 idli and masala vada. Was pleasantly surprised to find a south Indian vegetarian restaurant in West San Jose area. Dining experience was great. We ordered Mysore bonda, plain dosa and rava dosa. Dosas were top notch. Bonda tasted good as well but may be not my favorite. Staff was very nice and attentive. Service was very good. Ambience was cozy.
