Went on a Saturday evening for dinner. Got seated immediately. They are also pretty quick in bringing the food. Only problem we saw is that they just have one person taking orders in all the tables. During rush hours, it tends to take longer to place an order. We ordered 4 items : Poori Masala - Good in taste. The aloo curry is not spicy. So suitable for kids Madurai Malli Masala Dosa - Definitely a must try. It's spicy but in a good way Onions Pesarattu Dosa - Good in taste. They do chop green chilies with onions. The newer location! Ulavacharu always deserves high praise, and my experience was overall positive! But compared to the other locations, this one felt like it had room to grow, but that's justified seeing that it's still pretty new. Masala Dosa 7/10: Good, but definitely a far cry from the best dosas i've had. The potato mixture inside was very chunky and not mashed much, whereas the crispy outer layer of the dosa was nice but felt a little lackluster with cracks and being slightly cold to the touch. Podi Idly 9/10: Damn good! a little bit of spice to them, it comes with 3 and are a great shareable appetizer with lots of yummy dipping sauces. i liked the peanut based one in particular and the bell pepper sauce is a close second! Service was pretty good but the bathrooms were on the dingy side. Parking is plentiful but i saw lots of people struggling to park near the restaurant entrance... highly recommend just parking near the back where it's very roomy if you have a big car! read more

Not my favorite Indian food to be honest. I prefer northern Indian cuisine aka butter chicken. This thali was pretty spicy and a lot of sides were pretty sour to the point where I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be that sour, or if it was going off. Unfortunately not coming back. read more

We went for brunch on the weekend we ordered a thali and rava dosa. After 25 minutes I got a cold rava dosa, I sent it back, but still no thali in sight, then after several requests got the thali. It came with 2 small poori, cauliflower fries not crispy but tasted good. All the sides were decent. Dal was good tamarind sambar (Pulusu Gojju) was the best of all even though it had watery consistency. Tamarind rice and pulao dishes were ok. Rice was so less it was not enough for the amount for the sides. Dessert was one of the worst that I had. Finally again checking got my rava dosa. But overall lessons learned, food is ok but you won't get service unless you are a big party racking up bill. this is definitely what my favorite does it places in the Bay Area. The service is super quick and I'm always impressed how fast they can whip out your dinner. I have gotten the thali well though it's only available after 6:30 so time your meal correctly. Everything is so delicious and for a great price. For about a year, Ulavacharu had the best Thali in the area. And then for some reason, they changed it and it's now a tiny ghost of its former self. They now have thali for $18. It's delicious. Though it's limited, there are lot of varieties. The day I tried it, there was puri, four varieties of rice, pappads, pickle, sambar, rasam, dal, two or three varieties of curries, dessert etc. Most of the dishes took me down a nostalgic trip back to Andhra. The dal had ghee and was pure deliciousness. The puris are tiny though, rest of the varieties are also served in tiny quantities so it's not a lot of food. The thali might be a little overpriced given that it's limited. Looks like they now have millet based dishes on weekends before 11.30 AM, will try that next! read more

The best dishes in the thali were the Amaranth leaves moong dal fry, Pooris, and Spinach dal. We were here for a farewell lunch for a friend and the service was horrible! One order took forever to arrive - the rest of the group had already finished. The server John was extremely rude on multiple occasions. He asked us to hurry up as he said there were others waiting and this was even before all of us had even finished eating. My friend wanted to go out for South Indian food on a Saturday morning. Our first choice was jam packed so we ended up going to UlavacharU as a backup. I have never really said this about Indian food before as it's not particularly one of my favorites cuisines, BUT I REALLY want to go back to this place. Bless that man for introducing it to me. Podi Idly (5/5) - Spectacular! I had no idea what it was (later found it was a type of rice cake) but it was delicious! It was so soft and so flavorful. Definitely pretty spicy, but it was a good type of spice. The outer part had some little spice balls (I'm assuming it's the podi) that had a nice crisp texture. Masala Dosa (4/5) - The dosa was good, but it was just outshined by Podi Idly for me. I wish it had more spices and texture, but the sauces that went with it were really good. I like that there was so much variety for you to try. It's also a HUGE portion, so it was a perfect amount for our group of three. Peppery sauce had just enough spiciness. Benne Dosa is buttery so I would rather share one with others. Loved this place. We were here for breakfast. Food is very tasty and very kind service. We had Chai, Filter Coffee, Puri Bhaaji, Dosa, Idli-Vada-upma combo. We liked all the items we ordered. We especially liked their special Ginger-Jaggery Chutney. They also sell those chutneys in 8 oz containers. Very nice Asian interior since this place used to be a sushi restaurant before. I will say that the food is pretty mediocre but a couple of standout dishes include the uttapam and the housemade ginger chutney. We got nellore podi dosa, raga onion dosa, pesarettu and upma, podi idli and Poori masala for my kid. The podi idli was very good and spicyyy. Loved it. The dosas were good but we expected more spice. The chutneys and sambhar were all very good. The only problem was that the Poori had hair on it when it arrived. When we showed it to them, they immediately made another one for us. Didn't expect hair, right on top of poori to be served to us. What a gem! I have to be honest, I wasn't sure what I was eating, but it was all delicious. I enjoyed coming here for lunch to meet up with a friend. I liked that they had a set lunch menu that offered a variety of options. I liked that I saw solo diners that didn't appear to be South Asian visiting as well, perhaps hinting that this food appeals beyond cultural lines. Ambiance was casual. I wish there was a card or something that came with the food teaching people like me or my friend how to eat the food or what we were eating. I've seen things like that when dining at other places (usually abroad) that have a high number of foreign visitors. This place recently changed out all the lights on their building and parking lot with ridiculously bright replacements. They blast the entire neighborhood with what can only be described as spotlights - right through everyone's windows, up to four blocks away. They also leave the lights on all night. A few neighbors were blown off by the restaurant when complaining, so the next step is to try to get the place fined for light pollution and permit violations. read more

Who doesn't love a savory donut to dip with sauce. The star of the show was the mysore masala dosa. The waiter warned it would be spicy, but it wasn't spicy at all. Mild spicy if anything. Tried ulavacharu Campbell as we love ulavacharu on el Camino. But food here is very bad. We ordered thali as they had spinach alasandalu curry. But thali didn't come with that. When we asked, they said they replaced it with cabbage 65, which is bad. All the dishes are excessively salty, spicy and sour (too much tamarind in rasam, sambhar etc) . The 2 pooris that came with the thali are of pani puri size. All in all worst thali. read more

We have been regulars to their original location in Sunnyvale. If there is one reason anyone should visit , it is because of their chutneys. Andhra style chutneys that taste amazing!
