Decided to give this spot a try and hoped it would be a great experience but unfortunately it was a huge disappointment! I got a whiting dinner with two sides - coleslaw and macaroni and cheese. The whiting was crispy and well coated but had NO FLAVOR. How does that even happen?? The coleslaw tasted like there was a mistake and someone tried to fix it...sweet and tangy at the same time. Mac and cheese was a 5/10. Overall, I was very disappointed with my meal. I'm a true seafood lover and ended up only eating 1 piece of whiting, 1 fork of coleslaw (I spit that out) and half the mac and cheese. Oh, forgot to mention that they didnt have tartar sauce! I am a woman of color and I like hot sauce and tarter sauce on my fish. Had I known there was no tartar sauce I would not have ordered! I ordered fried whiting, mac & cheese and hush puppies. First off, the fish is fresh.. which isn't the norm.. Mac n cheese was cheesy! Normally, you get a lot of elbows and no cheese.. The food arrived on time. No spillage. Food was warm. Everything looked good. The order was correct except I ordered orange soda but got Brisk Iced Tea. They called me to tell me they ran out of sweet potato pie, I'm not quite sure why they didn't tell me about the soda. The food was filling, but ok. I expected American southern (soul food) style potato salad and please know there is not supposed to be ANY CHEESE in macaroni salad. The candied yams had a sweet aftertaste like it was made with molasses. Skip the mac & cheese. There was more cheese in the macaroni salad than in the mac & cheese, which was basically cooked noodles. The slice of lemon cake is small. The fish was good but you can taste the meal they used. For what I paid, it could have been better. I'll eat it because I bought it, but you all need to rethink the menu. read more

Food is good and mostly made to order. However, my beef with Roy's is stingy with their portions. They literally scoop up food on the spoon, shake off half and place it in a container (to go orders). They're prices are fair, so I figure the food should be placed in it's entirety into the container. Don't take my word for it, go see for yourself. read more

I have been here several times before and Im USUALLY pleased. Today I ordered shrimp, whiting and fries. ALL of it was greasy! And the whiting was salty. I placed the order, paid for it and returned to pick it up. My food was dropped upon my return although no one else was in the establishment and I believe rushed to me. A small hidden gem in the hood. We order catfish which is one of my wife favorites. The fish is always fresh. The pieces are pretty good. I normally do the lunch specials which are a good value. Definitely filling and worth the price. Brown Chicken in gravy was very good, didn't like the stray bones, but not a big deal. Rice and peas are good, candied yams are tasty, corn was very good. Service was very good and friendly. BBQ beef ribs were very good, fall off the bone tender. Mac and cheese was average, cabbage and collared greens are tasty and fresh. Large menu. I have been looking for a good fish place since I moved to East Orange, 6 years ago and have finally found the right spot. I order fish and shrimps from here at least once a week. The fish is fresh and very good. The shrimp also are extremely good and big. The only reason why I rated this a 4 instead of a 5 is because, they do not open when they state that they should open, which leaves me with a hungry stomach. Once I set my mouth on Roy's, I want my Roy's. So if you can see this Roy, please start opening when you say you do. Besides this I would rate the food a 5******. read more

My hubby was craving some fried fish and the frozen flounder we had in the freezer wasn't anywhere near being thawed out. So he yelped this place, saw the great reviews and off he went to get dinner. When he returned home we were ready to dig in! Disappointed!!! The greens were disgusting, they had a weird flavor... The fish was soggy and tasted as if it was cooked in old fish grease and it smelled as soon as hubby came in the door, I knew it was all downhill from there! We are extremely disappointed with these misleading reviews. We should have followed our instincts and went to just fish, although they have been falling off lately too, having that same old fish grease taste and smell. I guess I will be whipping out my frying pan, Louisiana fish fry, and fresh wesson oil to satisfy the hubs fish craving tomorrow. Better yet, maybe we should just eat a nice sautéed shrimp salad instead. Why do all of the urban areas have to have fried chicken and fish shacks? First this place is overly priced for the portion sizes but I work in ny and I'm use to overly priced food and this was a black establishment so I wanted to support I left and went 2 mins away and had to go back because they forgot some of my order after going back n forth wit them they found the rest of my order and gave it to me smh.
