5/5/2024. I initially bookmarked to try the fish here on another day/visit to Newark. But here I am because I was ignored at the neighboring restaurant. I'm glad SIP (neighboring rest.) provided poor service because I would have not been able to indulge in these tasty oxtails, tender collard greens, right amount of cinnamon candied yams. Potato salad dang near better than mine. well upon entering the cornerstone restaurant, no one was up front, but a young lady quickly comes up and greets with a smile. chipper and pleasant. The inside is small, not really a sit down and eat type establishment. Two small tables are available. I wish I had asked the young lady her name. she was patient and laughed when I asked what's good and best selling item. She said "everything!" Leaned towards me ordering the oxtail. She helped me deciding on sides and even convinced me the potato salad was good. she was right! everything was yummy and worth my $32.87. Portions are in keeping with the cost. I definitely can get 2 meals off this plate. Couldn't wait on the potato salad--Mustard base and sweet pickles. I normally wont eat mustard potato salad. apologies on the pic. I tried Roy's a few years ago and had a horrible experience. I went back last week, and although there's been some improvement- I was still underwhelmed. The area is not the best so definitely be careful while there. There's street parking only but it's not difficult to find a spot for your car. I decided on just a fish sandwich this time and skipped the sides. The fish was bland and tasted like it had been fried earlier in the day. Adding hot sauce and tarter sauce helped a bit, but not enough for me to really enjoy it. The prices are reasonable for what they have to offer and the location. If I'm ever craving fried fish and can't find it anywhere else, I'll visit again! Otherwise it's a hard pass for me. read more

OMG this was the nastiest un tasteful FISH. I have ever tasted it. I came there once when they first came to Linden, New Jersey and my fish was not fresh so I came back to give them a chance and the unfresh fish was better than this this Whiteys Had a funny smell to it. The fries was so greasy and not even fully cooked. I can't even give you a picture. I wasted my $40 that mess in the garbage $40.50 down the drain never again they need to close Linden's Roy's fried fish down ASAP. The food is not good. Hard pass but if you want some tasteless food go to this restaurant. I went with some family members we ordered "Yellow" Rice, 2 fries and some porgies. The rice was very plain. Not much taste. The fries were the same. My mom who was eating the porgy said it had an aftertaste so did the fries. The fish smelled horrible. My mom couldn't eat it because it smelled so bad that she thinks it's unsafe. The service was fine though. I didn't really like the ambiance it's not my type of place. Well. Looks like I've found a great fish spot near home. Fresh fried fish, real scallops (because imitation is a thing) and large clean fresh fried shrimp... sheesh what more could a girl ask for?? Banging fries! The place is small, unassuming and busy. People were constantly in and out. Shouting orders for their mac and cheese and other sides I'll be back to try. The mac looked pretty decent. Won't say good until I taste it but looked good and cheesy. Other places are scared to put the cheese in mac and cheese but I digress.... The fish and wings were made to order and you could tell. Worth the 25 minute wait in the car (call ahead). I've been craving scallops for awhile and this really hit the spot! It was so delicious and properly seasoned that I devoured it before I took a picture. I have no clue why others rated this business so low, they aren't nasty or mean but they are very busy and that needs to be considered during these hard times y'all! I ordered from them today via ubereats. I ordered family meal one that comes with 8 pieces of fried whiting and 2 large sides. I got the steak fries and macaroni and cheese. I liked the macaroni and cheese, it's not overly cheesy and personally that's how I like it. The fish was fried well, not greasy but crispy and light. The steak fries were fine, not greasy but lacked salt but nothing to complain about. Overall my family and I enjoyed the meal. I'll be ordering again in the future. read more

The food is great...my only reason for 3 stars is because I ordered an uptown with my order. Not only did I have to ask the server for the purchased drink but there was no insert in the plastic cup to even put the straw in?!?!?!? So.... I had to ask for a knife to make my own hole...kinda bothered by that!? Can you guys put holes in the cups to make it easier for patrons to enjoy their beverage? The banana pudding and cake weren't good. The banana pudding was generic. There are more spots in the area where you can get authentic banana pudding and cake. So I tried this place three times. The first was a horrible experience and the second was better. The yams were so good and fresh! The wings were good. The price was nice. The mac was cheesy. I wasnt really a fan of the mac but the portion size and the cheese is quite nice anyway. One of the seafood platters I tried had fries, shrimp, scallops, and fish. The fries are just some frozen type stuff, the shrimp did have a nice size but they were really tough, the scallops needed more seasoning, the whiting fish is something I wouldn't try again. I don't think I would even try any seafood platter from there. Just not really worth it taste or budget wise. The third time I had this place I went safe and ordered another chicken wing dinner but the yams were a total miss that time which is why this place isn't rated higher. Ive been a customer since they opened a year plus ago. The catfish and yams are what I come for as everything else ive tried from their menu is lackluster. Even those two can be inconsistent at times but still good. The food also can be salty as hell! Do not order the whiting, wings, mac or greens as youve been warned. My biggest issue is often calling ahead and arriving 20 mins later to either order not prepared or even order not in the bag and ready to go, which forces me to doublepark outside even longer than necessary...on south orange ave . Every now & again you stumble upon that "Diamond in the Rough". That's what happened today. I stumbled upon Roy's Fish Fry a few weeks ago in the heart of Newark. But today I got an opportunity to give them a try. The restaurant is small, but clean; nothing spectacular. I ordered the Whiting with Collard green & potato salad, as well as an order of Shrimp . The only way I could describe the shrimp is amazingly succulent. They were a nice size & simply deep fried with flour, no heaving batter or coating, yet simple and tasteful, but left me longing for more. The Whiting Fish were a nice size, but not very meaty, which is to be expected for this time of year. The Collard Greens were a great change, while other restaurants disguise their Collards with Cabbage, Roy's brings it straight, fresh & authentic without the fillers. My least favorite was the potato salad; while it was good, it wasn't great, It missed something; for me I think it was the missing boiled eggs, it wasn't bad though, it just could have been a tad bit better. Overall this hood spot was a great meal with well portioned sizes and a reasonable price tag. Can't wait to go back. Oh & for those who care, they don't cook with pork. read more

This was the worst food I have ever tasted in my life!!!! To start I ordered the lunch combo and it was $17 I was starving so I ordered it, it was a 2 piece fish, 2 scallops and 2 jumbo shrimp with a side of Mac and cheese! When I got to my destination LAWDDDDD! The fish was the size of a large goldfish at Petco, the scallops and shrimps were tough as hockey pucks! And the Mac and cheese was dry! And to top it off the little bit of food I was able to swallow had NOOOOOOO flavor at all! The only thing that was good was the hot sauce! The freaking nerve of this place! Nice little local spot. The prices are decent. Ordered the family fish meal and asked for Mac and yams as sides. Was told that the yams were out. No biggie. We just got double Mac. Got home and was pleasantly surprised that there was Mac in addition to our 2 orders of Mac in the bag. Now that's the kind of customer service that I like!! The fish was very good as well as was everything else. I would post pics but we are so fast ‍ This will most likely become our regular spot for fish night take outs. But on 8/11 I was waiting on my GH order for delivery and it was really hot that day so I bought their home made lemonade I'm in my car now and half way through my drink I pulled up something solid through the straw. I thought might be a lemon seed but when I spit it out it was cooked rice. Then I looked closely at the plastic container and there was at least 10 more grains of rice in the bottom Of my drink. Now I've always loved roys at first, there oxtails use to be my favorite. Over time the oxtails got smaller and nastier not sure why. I stopped going and decided to return last week to find out they raised the price from 18.99 to 24.99??? Yet they still give you the same greasy fatty 3-4 oxtails. The mac is always dry yet still has so much grease on the bottom. They need to find better cooks or get it together because if your gonna charge $25 (in the hood at that) the food should atleast be up to par. I use to go to Roy's in the past when the fish was fresh and tasty. I recently had a fish dinner with collard greens and potato salad that was extremely disappointing. The greens were over cooked with a lot of stems. It didn't taste freshly made at all. The potato salad was a weird deep yellow color, as if food coloring was added, also it taste like it was loaded with vinegar. And I'm guessing the yellow color was from too much mustard, however it was inedible. Lastly, the fish was not fresh or seasoned. The smell of the fish was so pungent it took over my work lunch room and the smell took days to get out my car. I'm so disappointed having to write this review, but this place needs a plan of correction fast!! I hate throwing food and my money away so I probably won't be returning. read more

I had brought food at this place before and the food was decent. So I was very hungry today Oct.17th and decided to visit them again. I was so disappointed will not visit again. First the staff was not friendly and so slow I thought they were sloths. The amount of food they give is not worth the amount of money you pay! I order a fish dinner for14.99, and the fish was so small not larger than the palm of my hands so they tried to compensate by giving me 6 pieces instead of 4, they were cold and greasy.
