Decades ago, this was my fave Japanese restaurant...but we rarely go here now. We recently met my son and his girlfriend for a double date on a Saturday night, and this was my impression... First of all, the place has been renovated...with a screened in porch outside, and some updated booths inside. However, despite some nice renovations, there were some other changes that I didn't like. They no longer crank up the music...instead the overhead was very muted. This sort of ruined the fun vibe of the place. Also, YEARS ago, every guest was greeted when you entered and left the restaurant with this Japanese-style yelping. It was actually kinda funny...but it was somewhat the hallmark of this restaurant. But no longer. No loud music...no funny greetings. Kinda sad? Then the foods. We ordered everything from Shrimp Tempura appetizer, to Fried Rice, Sushi Rolls, to a Chicken Katsu dish. THE only dish I was impressed with was their Katsu dish. Everything else looked and seemed kinda blah. That included my once-favorite "Rising Sun" Sushi Roll...just a pale comparison to how it was done before. I did enjoy the Lychee Sake though. Service was a bit minimal as well. Think the waitress visited us just once...near the end of our meal? Overall, I was quite disappointed. This place is just not the same as it used to be in its "heyday".
Yummy sushi! One of my favs in charlotte. They have heated outdoor seating along with indoor seating! Pricier than I like to spend on sushi, but the rolls were delicious. I forgot the names of the rolls that we ordered Seaweed salad was yummy! Miso soup was standard, edamame's was standard Parking lot for easy parking
The food was delicious, I have been looking for a bento box with yummy options and I found it. The service from Juan was amazing and the inside was clean. I would definitely come back.
who doesn't love being pleasantly surprised ! My first visiting Ru San's I was a little skeptical . Weekday late lunch time , parking lot wasn't too crowded . The artwork inside was beautiful. It gave the vibe some urban flair instead of cookie cutter decor . Most importantly everything was delicious ! Mango saketini .. YUM ! Beef fried rice could've used a little more flavor but that's nothing low sodium soy sauce can't fix . I can't remember the name of the roll unfortunately but it was fried with raw tuna and tastyyyy ! Probably my new favorite honestly. We also ordered cold sake and shrimp tempura, true and true classics you can't go wrong . We will definitely return to try more items ,
Everything came out fresh, on time, and exactly as ordered. It was so good I forgot to take any pictures before diving in! The sushi was flavorful and well-prepared, and the whole experience was super smooth. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because of two small things: the soy sauce bottles were mismatched. while the green and red caps were there to show which was low sodium vs regular, both bottles turned out to be regular soy sauce. I always go for low sodium when I can, so that was a little disappointing. Also, the dessert selection felt like an afterthought. Would love to see a better variety or something more exciting to end the meal on. Still, great sushi spot overall. definitely worth a visit if you're in Charlotte!
Best sushi I've had in Charlotte, and I have been to many restaurants! Sushi is my favorite food and this blew me away. Pricing was reasonable as well. My husband and I just had a new baby, so for my birthday we ordered an absolute feast of sushi and my husband picked it up to bring it home. The seaweed salad was fantastic, the rolls were incredibly fresh and traveled well. The rainbow roll was unique compared to what we have had at other restaurants. Will absolutely be back!
Aesthetic: Modern, authentic sushi restaurant with an extensive menu of classic and original rolls. My Favorites: The Grinch Roll Experience: I came on a quiet Tuesday night and was able to sit outside, and the weather was cool and perfect. The waitress was very sweet and attentive. I tried the Grinch Roll and The Green Turtle Roll, and the Grinch really stood out! I love fancy tuna rolls so it was perfect. The Green Turtle was a little too heavy on the honey mayo, it threw me off a bit, but I still finished and enjoyed it. I will definitely be back to try more.
TLDR: Great value sushi I'm a HUGE fan of Yamazaru, so when I found out that the owner of Ru San also opened Yamazaru, I had to give Ru San a try. One of my go-to orders at Yamazaru is the Chirashi bowl and a couple rolls, so I stuck with the same items here. I placed my order on a Wednesday afternoon through GrubHub, and the food arrived well-packaged and nicely presented. The Chirashi bowl came loaded with a wide variety of fish: salmon, tuna, yellowtail, scallop, mackerel, crab stick, tamago, white tuna, octopus, red clam, and shrimp. It also included a generous portion of rice, seaweed salad, and octopus salad. For $28, it's an incredible amount of food and a solid value. That said, the quality was hit-or-miss--the tuna was a bit fishy, and the rice tasted more like Chinese takeout rice than proper sushi rice. The Sushi Ornaments Roll and Yellowtail Sangria Roll were both very good, especially at around $13 each. The Sushi Ornaments roll is basically rice balls topped with slices of fish, crunch, and sauces. It leaned on the mushier side, but I still enjoyed it. The Yellowtail Sangria Roll was exactly what I was hoping for--the yellowtail was fresh, the jalapeño had a nice bite, and the flavors balanced really well. Overall, I give Ru San a 3/5. If you're looking for quality, Yamazaru is still the winner in my book, but for portion size and value, Ru San holds its own.
Stopped in during lunch time. They have a pretty decent lunch time menu and a variety of specialty sushi rolls to try if you wanted something different. I enjoyed my lunch special and didn't leave feeling like I needed/wanted more. I would come back for another visit
Kid had an awful week & sushi cheers her up. Sat at counter & Chef must have sensed something. Saw a huge tray of sushi & asked about a delicious looking roll. Said it was the "trust me roll". He then proceeded to make us a sample. Sushi is always fresh & creative and tastes even better when served with genuine kindness . Trust me
Came here with a friend from out of town before a comedy show. We enjoyed ourselves but our dinner was kind of soured because my friend was seated underneath a drippy AC unit in the ceiling. It dripped in her food so she couldn't finish and she had about half a roll left. We mentioned it to the waiter who took forever to flag down and he was really nice about it, but he did nothing in the way of taking that roll off of her tab. My food was good and I've attached a photo of my rolls but yeah this place loses a couple of stars for me.
Very nice ambiance! Reminds me of a diner. Great for social outing or date night. Lemonade Saki-not all that good. Could not taste the lemonade. Waves-large and pretty tasty. Could be a meal with fried rice for smaller appetite. Queen City Roll-this was . Chunks of salmon on top. There is a sauce that is salty so really no need for soy sauce. Pork Belly Fried Rice-enough for two. Wish the egg was actually sunny side up, but other a great dish packed with veggies.
I'm still very new to the world of sushi... but my friends picked Ru San's for a late lunch today. The dining experience took longer than expected, but our waiter had kindly apologized and explained they were short staff. However, that didn't stop our waiter from having some fun with our table... he even "confiscated" my fork so that I could learn to eat with chopsticks!! Haha!! We all got different rolls so I tried various new items (while my friends were staring and waiting for my reactions lol!) My favorite was the sweet potato roll with shrimp, but I also surprisingly enjoyed the summer mango roll with its spicy kick! This location was near Park road, offered plenty of parking, as well as both indoor and outdoor seating. Again, although I'm still new to sushi.. I had a great experience at Ru San's and can see why they were so busy!! read more

Popped in here with a group of 8 on Saturday afternoon. I am not sure what that place use to be but it's very dark in there and the seating setup is kind of weird. Thankfully the food was great. We got a mix between sushi and hibachi plates. The fried rice was so soo good although some of the chicken was dry but still really good. The sushi hands down was the best. Definitely the quality and quantity measures up. I'm taking off a star because our waitress was not friendly, she was very matter of fact and not informative at all. Heads up they no longer do the all you can eat sushi and they charge for refills on lemonade and ginger ale however you wouldn't know until you get your bill. At least that's what happen to us and when we called the waitress out about it she just shrug her shoulders. I think her name was OLGA. I would return but would request another waitress. read more

Ru Sans is forever one of my fav places to get sushi. The vibes are always nice & they have tons of outside seating too. The staff is also incredible -- the most recent visit I had Toto as a server. He was so friendly and had a great sense of humor, he really added to our experience!! I typically get the bento box which includes edamame, tempura, 2 sushi rolls, and pot stickers So much food and for no more than 20$ -- such a good deal for a sushi place, YUM! read more

Went on a Friday night for a party of 2 so the wait was a little long, about 40 minutes. The wait was definitely worth it though! I had the firecracker roll and the lemon saketini, both were 10/10! Me & my friend decided that this was our new spot. Can't wait to go again. read more
Order: edamame, salmon skin roll, ru san's roll This was my first time trying edamame. I've never cared for it in the past but today I wanted something new. Let me tell you, the adult palate is very different. I like things now that I never did before. Safe to say I enjoyed the edamame. However the two sushi roll I ordered were not as enjoyable. They weren't very flavorful and lacked taste. There's other sushi to try and they are affordable compared to other places. Most likely will return to try other menu items. read more
Ru Sans was good! The service and food was pretty slow but I know Sundays are usually busy for them. The appetizers were just meh in my opinion. I LOVED the 2 rolls I got - salmon delux and kiss of fire roll. I wish they weren't so drenched in sauce but regardless they were both so good. This review is pretty much solely based on being served sushi for 3 people on one plate. I'm really still shocked by this. I went to Ru Sans with 2 friends of mine last night and Ru Sans is usually a good experience for me. I've been here many times over the past decade I've lived in Charlotte. Our server was new (I'm guessing) and seemed a little clueless about a lot of things we asked. I specifically ordered the crispy octopus, which is on their menu with a photo and description, plain as day. Our server said they don't have octopus at all. I was literally staring at raw octopus in the sushi bar the entire time sitting at our table. So, idk if she just didn't know the menu or didn't care because she didn't even go and ask about it. She just looked at me like I had three heads when I ordered it. Weird. The biggest kicker and disappointment was when our sushi rolls came out all on one big plate. This is wrong for so many reasons: -what if someone in our group had a food allergy? -since when does any restaurant serve food for 3 people on one plate, unless it's a family style type deal? -why didn't we get smaller plates to eat with? -how did they think it would be easy to move gigantic sushi rolls topped with all kinds of things from one big plate to one smaller plate without everything falling apart? It was A MESS. -what if we don't want to share one plate for three people? We had to ask for small plates and forks because we couldn't even use the chopsticks since the sushi had to travel so far from the large plate to our mouth. I was tempted to ask for a spatula to safely scoop my rolls onto my plate so I could reach it without it falling apart. The sushi was falling apart, every single bite! I just don't understand why our food was served this way and it really bothered me. I ordered the crap dip and tootsie roll. My food was delicious, which infuriates me even more. Hopefully, this was an off night but I won't be back for a long while. read more
We were told by a couple of our friends that Ru-Sans has the best fried rice but until they took us there, we had no idea how right they were. At first glance it looks like a normal chicken fried rice but after the first bite - just wow. We've never tasted a more flavorful, peppery bite of fried rice EVER. It was so good we are STILL thinking about this bite, along with the other rolls we got. I am normally a fried roll kind of girl, but I got a regular roll while visiting Ru-San's and honestly, I didn't miss the fried element at all. Who would when you have so many scrumptious components dancing around on your palate? My husband got his normal assortment of of Tokusen sushi while I had the "Lady in Red" roll consisting of flash fried eel, masago, cream cheese, spicy tuna, bbq eel, avocado, jalapeño, kabayaki, and sriracha. We also ordered the crispy tuna roll for the table which was made up of fresh tuna wrapped in seaweed then lightly katsu fried and topped with sriracha Mayo, ponzu sauce, and green onion. The cucumber served under each roll definitely kept it light and fresh. The lemon drop "saketini" I got was also super refreshing with our meal. If we can't have a Ru-Sans in the Triad, it's definitely a place we make a regular pit stop to when we are in the Charlotte area! read more

Ru sans never disappoints! I got the grinch roll and Philly roll. Grinch was better! Loved the sauce and crunchies on top. Fiancé got the chicken fried rice who said it was good as well. I also got the ginger salad and gyoza dumplings as starters. The ginger salad was a great size for the price with ample dressing! read more
Busy place and larger that it looks inside. Came on a Wed night by myself and sat at the sushi bar. There is outdoor dining as well so there are varied seating options. They had some local brews available - which is a plus as many sushi places have the typical stuff. I went with the California Sunset Roll ($12) and two orders of the Sake (Salmon) Nigiri ($6) and it was decent and fairly priced. Service at the bar from Kang was prompt and friendly. I'd come back again and try some of the other sushi rolls. read more

A classic for sushi! The vibe here is always fun and the wait staff is super friendly! The sushi list can be overwhelming but every roll is always fresh and amazing. A big plus is how cheap the rolls are for the quality! We've been coming here since 2006. Here are our favorites in order of first to last. 1. Hamachi Jalapeño - super fresh 2. So the food alone deserves 5 stars! The only reason why I gave it 4 was because the service was super slow. The food on the other hand, absolutely delish! The only dish that lacked salt and spice was the chicken fried rice. The only reason why I didn't get sushi was because I'm pregnant and can't eat right now now. But my niece and husband both loved the sushi that came out! The gyoza was also very delish! They slack and lose points in service. read more

Our 30 minute wait on a Friday night turned into an hour wait for 6 people. We were told several times just a few more minutes and then the hostess would get missing. Once we got to the table it took the server a while to come to our table. The restaurant was very cold and we were right under a vent. The food was good as usual and the portions were on point. The menu has seen a change but you can always find your favorites tucked away somewhere on the menu. Some of my favorites are the Exotic roll, Crunchy Tuna Roll and Chicken Fried Rice. I went on a Friday night around 9pm it was pretty busy. We had to wait about 15-20 minutes to be seated. I ordered some fried Brussel sprouts as an appetizer they were so tasty and came with this really good sauce. As my meal I got some Veggie noodles they were ok they gave me Way more veggies than noodles and it could have used more seasoning to be honest. My husband got sushi that's why we came I don't eat sushi but he said it was really good. The waiter was attentive and a few others stopped and asked were we ok or needed anything. The service was good and the sushi was good. I would go back but it's definitely not in my top places to go. read more

Ru San's had such a bomb sushi selection. We went here on a self guided foodie tour and someone ordered the fried rice for the table to try. It was absolutely the best fried rice I've had! We got a bunch of rolls overall and I wanna go back and try more! read more

I have been to ru sans (take out only) a couple times now. It is the freshest sushi I have had in Charlotte! They have so many rolls it can be overwhelming, but I can honestly say each roll I have had, I would 100% recommend. Tonight I ordered a rainbow roll to go, just an after work pick me up. It was ready in 15 minutes. There was a good assortment of fish and it was fantastic. You know the fish is fresh when it nearly melts in your mouth. I've also had the spider roll from here and the soft shell grab was fried to perfection. I forget the names of the other rolls I ordered in the past, but all of them were specialty, and matched the item description perfectly. Very reasonably priced here. I will continue to order from Ru Sans! read more
One of the better sushi restaurants in CLT! You can't go wrong with Ru San's. Start off with the tuna tataki you won't regret it. I like mostly all of the sushi rolls I have had there. Ordered the Grinch roll (no aioli) and seaweed salad to go. The Grinch is such a classic combination with tuna and avocado. The crunch and eel sauce elevate it just that much more. Pairs perfectly with the seaweed salad. read more
This place was really good! Outdoor dining is set up really well with large heaters so you don't get too cold. Service is friendly and pretty fast. The rolls are really fresh and the combinations are inventive and taste really great. We ordered the aged dashi which is fried tofu in a flavored dashi broth. It was really tasty, subtle and enjoyable. The sushi and sashimi was really fresh. I would highly recommend if you are in Charlotte. We got the seven samurai and a sashimi set, it was really fairly priced and enjoyable. read more

Good atmosphere and good sushi at a great price! They have an extensive list of rolls that was a little overwhelming but is great for anyone who prefers to have a variety to choose from. The portions are very generous, from the appetizers to the rolls. My boyfriend doesn't typically like seafood and he ordered the sweet potato caterpillar maki and the kimchi roll, with an order of seared beef nigiri. They were all delicious! I was very impressed at the flavor and tenderness of the seared beef. That was a new one for me as far as sushi experiences go and I'll be ordering my own next time. The restaurant was pretty busy while we were there but our food came out fast. The staff was very friendly. I can't wait to go back and try more of the special rolls. read more

I was looking forward to this restaurant for a long time, we have one near us but I was traveling for work and decided to give it a go. While the food tasted good, it was a little too close to room temp.. I trusted the name of the restaurant so I ate it anyways and was fine, but if temp and food safety is super top of mind I would be cautious. The atmosphere is very dim and dark, if the lights were on I'd only hope it was super clean for a restaurant. My server was nice and attentive, I just kept getting weird looks from her because I was eating alone and in/out pretty fast. I would go again, but maybe at the location closer to home. read more
Good sushi spot! However, when it's busy, be prepared to be waiting for awhile for your food to come. Think we were sitting around for 40-50 minutes for our food to come. Prices are pretty standard for a sushi place, but not as expensive as more high end spots. read more

Yes! It is wonderful and stocked really well, just get there before they close for the afternoon because it gets packed really quick
