Phenomenal sushi and super quick! Wasn't sure what to expect with "Corona Time" but was pleasantly surprised with their set up. To go orders/ food delivery service through one door and dine in through other. I sat at the bar and I had already researched menu prior to arrival so ordering was easy. Dancing eel Tootsie Gladiator Miso soup Piece of fresh water eel Every single bite was perfect, perfect texture (soft/crunchy), and hit all the flavors. The actual servers were pretty kind but took forever to bring food and take order. The place overall was pretty nice with a chill ambiance. The main reason why I'm giving this place two stars is the actual food. The fish was very stale and not fresh at all. I'm very disappointed with this sad excuse for sushi. Even the tempura was sad and nowhere near crispy. read more

Ordered takeout sushi from here the other day and really thought the display of the sushi in the takeout box was efficient and the miso soup I had also ordered was very warm even after a 30 minute traffic drive. Thought that it was nice that I had received more pieces than I thought I would. The only thing I would say takes away a star for this review is the fact that I didn't sit in the restaurant as take away was my first experience with Ru San's. Will reevaluate when I do! Ru Sam's never disappoints! The sushi bar is the focal point when you walk into the restaurant and it wraps around both sides. I'd personally recommend looking at the menu prior to going because they have so many options it's a bit overwhelming. I got three rolls and one of them was suggested by the waitress. This was the perfect amount of food with different flavors in each role. The only reason this is getting a 4/5 is because one of my rolls had soft shell crab and it wasn't good at all. Outside of that single ingredient, this is one of the top sushi restaurants in Charlotte. It's a must try read more

I have not been at this place in a while. It has a new owner but the sushi is still great. It seems they kept most of the cooks. We sat at the bar and had a great time. It was nice too spend time talking to the cooks and learning more about the food we were eating. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

I figured with that many good reviews I couldn't go wrong....I just realize how right I was going!! Ru San's is amazing - the sushi was so fresh and flavorful, the service and people were great and the ambiance is perfect for what I would want in a sushi place. Looking at the menu, my only disappointment was that I wasn't going to be able to eat more. I ended up going with: Hamachi Jalapeño Sashimi - love yellowtail so this was a no brainer - delicious just as it is Back Shrimp Killer Roll - a meal in itself and so good. I'd never seen a roll topped with whole baby shrimp but it worked amazingly. Chipotle Roll - perfect amount of spice and taste Rainbow Roll - the best way to try all of their types of fish, could just taste the freshness and probably one of the best Rainbows I've ever had. Highly recommend this very, very high level sushi spot! read more

This is my favorite sushi spot in Charlotte! I loved all of the rolls I got and would get them again. Highly recommend: Gladiator Roll, Summer Mango Roll, Rich & Famous Roll, Salmon & Avocado Roll. I'm pretty picky with my rolls (don't like anything fried, cream cheese, eel or soft-shell crab) but they have so many different rolls to choose from so I'm a happy camper. It's a bit on the expensive side, each roll is easily over $10 but the quality is there so I'm here for it. read more

Doesn't look like it would exceed my expectations from the outside, but the appearance proved me wrong in no time. I came to RuSan's 2 weeks ago on a Monday night after travelling back from a wedding I had attended in my hometown. My fiance and I were exhausted and had no energy to cook something at home so decided to eat a quick meal somewhere. Vegetarian sushi is my go to when it comes to comfort food so RuSan's was the best option for us that night. We arrived about 30 mins before closing but were seated quickly and received our food quickly too. I had ordered one of their signature veggie rolls (can't remember the name) but it had sweet potato, avocado, and cream cheese in the roll. We also ordered an edamame with spicy seasoning on the side. The salt for the edamame came on the side too which I wasn't used to. I prefer it already on the beans so that it soaks in a bit by the time it gets to me. Everything was delicious though & we were stuffed beyond happiness. Definitely recommend for good sushi and apps! And definitely recommend for vegetarians like me! read more

Came here on a recommendation and didn't have a reservation. Called in advance and was told 15-20 min wait for a walk in party of 2 on a Wednesday evening. Unfortunately after waiting 30 Min we decided to order to go. We were told it'd still take another 30 min for them to make the sushi so we said ok. Waited over an hour from when we placed the order to get it. Saw tables who were sat after we placed the order eat and leave while we were waiting. They must put all take out orders at the bottom of the list. Unfortunately lost our business because of this experience and now we are eating sushi in our car. I know everyone's under staffed right now and they seemed slammed, but it's a bad business practice to say something will be ready in 30 min then have us wait over double that amount of time. read more

This might be my favorite sushi restaurant in NC. It is super affordable with great quality fish! This is a popular place, so the wait for a table can be a while. Luckily, We got there before the rush and only waited 15 minutes for a table. Our server was great and attentive. We ordered 2 specialty rolls (both amazing, see pictures), 6 pieces of nigiri, and 2 toro hand rolls (to die for). The server had to ask the sushi chefs if we could get toro hand rolls (likely due to availability and cost), but I am so glad they were able to make it for us. Our total was only $60! I've told all my friends and family to check this place out. read more

I came to Ru Sans once before and got the lunch buffet. It was ok, but not great. Not good enough for me to want to come back. Then some friends told us we were doing it wrong and needed to order off the menu (go figure, buffet sushi isn't the best). We came back with them to give it another try and let them order for us. A few of the rolls I think we got were the Ultimate Tuna Roll, Green Dragon Roll, Atomic Salmon Roll, BBQ Steak Roll. There were definitely a couple more that we got, but since we didn't order, I can't remember what they were. We loved all of them. My favorites were probably the Green Dragon Roll and the Ultimate Tuna Roll. We also got the Curry Rice appetizer which was really good. Overall I think this was some of the best sushi you can get in Charlotte for the price. It was about $20 each and we left stuffed. Definitely worth checking out and ordering off the menu instead of doing the buffet! read more

I've only eaten takeout from Ru San's but the sushi is always fresh and tasty. This place is pretty busy every time I pick up my food so I'd expect a typical wait time if I were dining in. Because of this, I always make sure to call ahead for takeout, about 15-20 min or 40 min for busy weekends. Prices are standard for good sushi and we always love how fresh it tastes. I wouldn't recommend getting anything fried for takeout since we made this mistake and the styrofoam was pretty much melted in multiple spots. I guess that's a sign that the food is always packaged quickly & ahead of the estimated wait. Definitely looking forward to finally dining in one night, hopefully when it's not too busy or crowded. read more

Came here for Friday lunch and we got seated right away. They have some good lunch specials but I had to get the sushi. Highly recommend the twice cooked salmon roll, it's probably one of my all time favorite sushi rolls ever. The cooked sushi on the top of the roll was so crunchy yet tender and it just seemed to melt in my mouth. Also pair it with spicy mayo, so good! The Queen City roll was also great though, love the cream cheese in there. The service was great, wait time for food wasn't too bad, and food quality was amazing. The owners are also in charge of Yamazaru too. The sushi menu was also very extensive, it took me awhile to figure out what I wanted. Overall great experience and I would come back! read more

It had been awhile having Ru San's and not because of the pandemic. I am not on this side of town often. Thankfully yesterday when my friend were in the area and starving - she said, hey, let's go to Ru San's! We shared the pork dumplings and Kiss on Fire Roll. Delicious! This is tied for my very favorite sushi in Charlotte! The prices are affordable, the rolls are big, tasty, and the menu is humungous. I order veggie rolls most of the time, and the sweet potato and cream cheese one is fantastic. All apps and desserts have also been good that I've tried. I've only eaten in the actual restaurant once, but it was of course delicious, we got seated quickly, and the server was very nice. read more

TLDR: Always get the sushi but never get the buffet. There's no better sushi for the price than Ru San's. Recently, my wife and I joined the bloggers known as Scallion Pancake to a sushi lunch at Ru San's. On their podcast, Scallion Pancake mentioned that they highly recommend Ru San's because they are the best value in Charlotte. Respecting their opinion, we let them choose our rolls. We ordered the Ultimate Tuna Roll, Green Dragon Roll, Atomic Salmon Roll, BBQ Steak Roll, and the Chipotle Roll. All of them were excellent and well worth the price. Update: Okay, so the unapologetically slow service played a significant component in my previous review. For the food itself, I have to give 5-stars. Definitely go with delivery/take-out for this place to avoid a fatal fate. I love how Ru Sans is allergy-friendly, and has yet to mess up my order. I'm pesca-vegan, so I don't do dairy or eggs, and have never received either in my order. Yay for extensive delivery options. The Girlfriend Roll (still hoping that when my now-ex orders this, he thinks of me) and weirdly, the Tempura Banana Maki Veggie Roll, are my absolute favorites. I swear, I order the banana roll every time. Don't limit yourself! Dream it, dreamer. read more

This place was packed on a Saturday night and I ordered to go. It was so busy and also difficult to find a parking spot. I ordered the Shrimp Tempera Roll, Exotic Roll and Miso Soup and it was around $20. The shrimp tempura roll was good- but nothing crazy. I was not a huge fan of the exotic roll. The sauce on it made the shrimp tempura soggy. Other than that, everything was good and pretty reasonably priced for sushi. I would recommend making a reservation if you are dining in on the weekend. read more

What I can tell you is that the design and decor vary considerably in each as do the menu items. The seafood tends to be locally sourced (relatively speaking) if possible and the seasonal menu is updated, literally, daily. I enjoyed the design of this Midwood Charlotte restaurant more than the others. It's in a renovated historic building and has an airy, modern yet industrial vibe. That is, except for perhaps the alcove where we were seated. This nook reminded me somewhat of my uncle's wood-paneled basement from many years past. That's OK, because what the niche may have lacked in aesthetic was made up by providing a more secluded quiet space for intimate conversation. Because we were hungry yet at the same time lazy we chose the chef's tasting omakase menu. Ten small courses chosen by the kitchen, no muss or fuss on our part. Many, but not all of the courses are from the menu. You can review my photos of some of the dishes, I remembered the names of most. Favorites? In general it has to be the sushi. Sure, the fresh fish is delicious but it's the rice, that incredible moist, flavorful short-grained rice that makes them sing. If you've only had sushi or rolls from a lower-end restaurant or grocery store then, my friends, you're in for a treat. My wife LOVES Uchi so now that there's one in our neighborhood we'll definitely be back.

I would love to start off by saying I served here for about 5 months and bartended for 3 months here. THAI NGYUEN THE OWNER HAS ALLOWED HIS EMPLOYEE TO PHYSICALLY ASSAULT A FELLOW EMPLOYEE. He KNOWINGLY hired a felon on probation (male, mid 50s) he goes by "SHIP" (FELONY CRIME) with a previous record and told officers it was the victims fault. ( a 21 year old female) He also steals money from the servers as all servers share tips. Including cash. He also shorts you and encourages bartenders to serve less than a standard shot pour. He encourages an ounce of liquor instead of an ounce and a half. "Thinking y'all won't notice" I had to leave this establishment because of the illegal transactions, servings, and distrust within management. I never even signed a w-2. HE TAKES YOUR MONEY AND USES IT TO BUY OUT HIS EMPLOYEES TO CONTRACT THEM TO WORK FOR HIM BC ITS ILLEGAL AND THEY ARE TOO. HE LIVES IN ATLANTA AND IS ONLY AT THE RESTAURANT WHEN HE WANTS YOUR MONEY. He doesn't bother making sure his female employees are taken care of under the male hostility he puts us under unless it's his own Children of course. The only manager we had left and I quit on the same day. If I could give this place less than a one star I would. He never once checked my ID either to make sure I was she verified to bartend. Ru San's Ru San's Ru San's.....Go for the food, not for the service. I'll give them the shadow of a doubt since it was a busy Saturday night when we went which is why they still get 4 stars. I was a waiter myself for a few years back in the day. So yeah, the service did have something to be desired but the food by far made up for it. The menu is amazing. I don't think I've ever seen so many different and unique roll combinations in one place before. Even if you're not a huge sushi nut like I am there's plenty of traditional cooked dishes to choose from as well. The food itself really was great. I had the Seven Color Rainbow roll as well as a couple of pieces of Unagi, I like the variety. The fish tasted fresh and the BBQ eel had a lot of flavor. I also saw while we were there that they have a lunch buffet from 11:30 to 2:00 that I need to check out sometime. All and all a good place for sushi that's a great value for the price. Review Update: Ru San's seems to have declined in quality since my last visit several years ago, which was really disappointing given its long-standing reputation. I ordered a few things off the menu, including sushi rolls, a tofu dish, and Brussels sprouts. Unfortunately, the Brussels sprouts were overly salty and consisted mostly of burnt, flaky pieces rather than actual sprouts. There was no sauce or other seasoning to balance the flavor either, making them kind of disgusting. The sushi rolls were average, lacking the freshness or creativity I had hoped for. The tofu dish was soggy and gross, so I ended up sending it back. It was a very underwhelming experience, and I left feeling frustrated for having spent money on such disappointing food. There is one restaurant in Charlotte that makes me feel like I'm in New York City eating (without the high NYC prices!) and it's Ru Sans. Everytime I have been there, it's on a wait or almost there (lunch & dinner). It's without a doubt the best value for sushi in Charlotte, the food and service is consistently good, and I like the hustle and bustle of the place. My wife and I like going there for the lunch buffet (all you can eat!) and also on Friday and Saturday nights to get us hyped up for bar hopping with friends. Ru Sans has never let me down. Came here by myself for the Lunch buffet "all you can eat sushi" with a drink and tip it came to $16-17. The sushi selection was pretty good and I was able to avoid overload on rice by getting the salmon nigiri. The salt and pepper calamari was good and the only thing I tried from The hot bar except it was disappointing that they did not get more out the 30 mins I was there. The sushi is pretty good for a buffet and it doesn't seem to sit out too long. If you opt to sit at the bar it seems like you can get a seat faster. All in all decent food. Servers are off putting, but luckily I didn't require too much interaction with them. read more

So I am new to this yelp thing and also to sushi. Someone recommended Ru Sans and we went on a Thursday night. The atmosphere was loud and exciting and our waitress was a white short lady with short spiky hair. I told her the only thing I was familiar with was tuna and she recommened the ahki poki appetizer, which was awesome! She also helped me pick a few rolls for my main dish. She was hilarious, attentive, and very helpful, the service was excellent. For a great dinning experience, I would definitely recommend this place and this witress to everyone I know! read more

Absolutely incredible Japanese cuisine! The sushi here is fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. Every bite was delicious, from the classic rolls to the chef's special creations. Excellent quality of sushi and everything was so delicious. They have amazing selection of sushi. It looks so appetizing and very fresh too. Had a decent lunch there and we totally enjoyed the food so much. The rolls were tasty and so fresh. The meat fish was excellent quality and they have good portion size.
