Excellent all 3 times I've been , actually went last night for my birthday dinner I could have gone anywhere, Decided on Rubino's and it was fabulous Petrale sole Almandine 10 !! , wife had Veal Picatta was 10 !! , The Bread, Huge =Half Ceaser salad and birthday comp Ice Cream with fudge topping all terrific. Why did I not know about this place! What a gem! While driving around looking for somewhere to eat, my husband and I spotted Rubino's. I don't know why we've never eaten here before, but it was amazing. Now we found our spot close to home and it will be our go to. About the same as last time, this is an old school style Italian restaurant. If you are seeking typical, middle of the road Italian fare, then this is the place to go. There's nothing particular bad, other than being ordinary, and nearly every dish could be made easily at home, with an added bump up in flavor. I started with a salad, good enough and lightly dressed, but the individual parts could have been shredded or cut down further for ease of eating. I got a huge chunk of cucumber. This time, I had the Pasta Milano. It was competent enough, the pasta well prepared, but it was drowned in a thick white sauce. The chicken pieces were cooked OK, could have been smaller, and seemed to come from a commercial grade product in a freezer bag. The taste of the dish was very mild, bland, and was similar to one of those preprepared freezer options from a supermarket. It was a very heavy dish and undoubtedly very high in fat content. I ended the meal with ice cream, a Spumoni. Again, nothing out of the ordinary. Service was a bit inconsistent. Meals did not arrive together with an inordinate lag time from one person to another, and it took a couple of asks to get water glasses refilled. I truly have nothing against the restaurant other than being ordinary and not all that inspiring. It's the type of place my parents went to in the 1960s, so for nostalgia, this is the place. Long Wait, Poor Execution, Not Worth the Price I recently visited Rubino's Ristorante and left deeply disappointed. We waited a total of 35 minutes to be seated--15 minutes before a hardworking waitress (dark hair, darker complexion, very fit, clearly carrying much of the load) acknowledged us, and another 20 minutes before we were finally seated. Aside from her and the busser, the rest of the staff seemed indifferent, and overall service was no more than adequate. I ordered the Rigatoni Salsiccia, which should have been al dente rigatoni with a rich tomato sauce reduced to cling to the pasta and authentic spicy Italian sausage for depth. Instead, I received overcooked pasta in a watery, oily sauce that tasted like ketchup mixed with olive oil, with generic "pizza sausage" and a flavorless execution. A clam Alfredo ordered at our table was delayed 20 minutes before we were told they were "out of Alfredo noodles," with the explanation that spaghetti is the same--an incorrect substitution. For two entrées, bread, and a Pellegrino, the bill was $85 plus tip. Aside from the effort of the one hardworking waitress and the busser, the food and service reflected wholesale shortcuts rather than authentic Italian cuisine. A very nice cute little restaurant, beautiful Christmas decorations, and amazing appetizers and food was really good. They also have really good bread with olive oil and vinegar and oregano as a complementary. Our waitress was very nice and she kept giving us more vinegar and oil as we asked. This is the sceond time I have visited (with a reservation) with family, and the second time I have been dissapointed. The service is great, the food is so/so and incredibly overpriced! Calamari appetizer is the best thing on the menu. Desserts are very good! Seafood fettuccine may as well have been fettuccine soup, Primavera had no flavor (per person that orderd) Veal was "good". Of six people no one indicated they would order again. This was not a $440.00 dinner, only three drinks orderd, all but two dishes were primarily pasta, and at least two should have been sent back. We have been to Rubinos many times over the last 17 years living in Rocklin . We are grateful for this local business, providing quality food in a nice atmosphere. Yesterday we had Rubinos's cater a dinner at our home For 30 people celebrating my mom's 95th birthday. Chris did a site inspection a couple of days ahead of time. He was very responsive and a good communicator during the planning process. Everything went off perfectly. They arrived on time. The food was served hot. Exciting dinner tonight! We decided Rubino's was the place to be! Hidden in Rocklin on Pacific Street, Rubino's Ristorante can be found with their lit up sign and beautiful light up weeping while tree on patio while listening the gorgeous sounds of their water fountain. They offer old school Italian pasta dishes and country wines. Their wine list features many Californian and Italian varietals by the glass and bottle. As you walk in, there are thousands of corks in large cases & glasses around the restaurant. We got lucky without reservations and were seated right away. The 4 of us were so excited! Christy was our server. It did take a little longer than we felt should've to finally get our server, but I still feel like we had excellent service! We started with an order of Arinchini balls (signature risotto fried to perfection with a tomato cream sauce) and a bottle of Robert Hall's Cabinet Sauvignon. When we put in our appetizer order, we also ordered our entrées... Lasagna, Gnocchi, Veal Marsala, and their Sole Special. As we waited for our Arinchini balls, some bread with dip arrived for us to enjoy. When our appetizer arrived, it was 4 pieces over creamy marinara. My 3 friends ordered a ceaser salad with their meals and I decided to try the clam chowder... the clam chowder was plain and not good. So I decided to join everyone with their ceaser salad. That was very delicious! Tossed in ceaser dressing with homemade croutons, capers, parmesan cheese... and what wowed me was that there were capers in the salad! The perfect touch! We all added anchovies on top for a special treat. When our dinners arrived, we also added another bottle of Robert Hall. Our dinners looked pretty amazing. We all shared a bite with one another. The Veal Marsala had a lot of chewy pieces in it, but other than that, it was still very delicious. I think the star plate at our table was the Sole Special. The Veal Marsala and Sole Special came with mashed potatoes... they weren't fluffy. They were more like puddy. I felt like our plates could've had better presentation. Especially the clam chowder... We enjoyed our service from beginning to end. Christy was great! The restaurant is a beautiful setting with dim lighting. It is perfect to celebrate a romantic night or a special anniversary. We had a party of 10 people for dinner at Rubino's. They had live music, which really added to the ambiance. Our waitress was taking care of the whole restaurant by herself, and she was terrific in taking care of our large table as well. Food came out quickly and was very tasty. We like the beet salad, Caesar salad, and grilled salmon. One person in our party had the Mediterranean Snapper, which was very well-liked. Others also enjoyed the shrimp scampi, and lasagna. The risotto was rich and buttery, and the vegetables were also well-cooked. We had spumoni ice cream and crème brûlée for dessert, which were also very good. Here are the items we ordered: Seafood fettuccine, Pasta Milano, chicken Marsala, arancini, calamari, gnocchi in tomatoe cream sauce, chicken parmesan, creme brule, lasagna, and the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. Everything was amazing! The chicken Marsala wasn't what I expected but the chicken was cooked perfect. The seafood pasta was for my mom and she's the pickiest of us all. She was very pleased with her dish. My favorite was the Gnocci in the tomatoe cream sauce ( they were perfect Iike puffy clouds). 2nd favorite was the Pasta Milano. Then the creme brule. My husband picked out this place, he never cares for reviews like I do. Though this restaurant has mixed reviews and we ourselves have not been to very many Italian restaurants. I gotta say tonight was a success. We loved our food, the chicken Marsala was so delicious that even though I was extremely full I left no food behind. Enjoyed the complimentary sourdough bread with the light oil. The only thing my hubby didn't like was the carrots that his entrée came with. I can see why they were too soft and had a strong sweetness to them. I had the same carrots on my plate and found the carrots to be pretty tasty. We decided to go for a car ride even though gas is skyrocketing. At some point I said, "Let's find good place to eat." We found a great place, better yet, a fantastic place. Rubino's is an old fashioned Italian restaurant. The place is kept up and it's truly a classy place. When Yan and I celebrate our birthday later this month, we are bringing our friends Bill and Cheri here. Chris, the owner, met us at the door and actually took the time to ask our names and welcomed us. We were seated immediately! That alone earned them a five star! The bread came to the table and the cool crisp salads came next. Nothing like a cool crispy salad, I say. The rib eye was awesome and the garlic mashed potatoes and slivered carrots went well. I'm not a carrot fan but they were perfectly sautéed. Yan's Cioppino was excellent, filled with clams, mussels, shrimp and fish. I couldn't wait for the dessert menu to be presented. Our incredible waiter Paul sent his helper Victoria to the table with the dessert tray... We had agreed to only share one dessert, the crème Brûlée delicious. We just had funeral services for my wife's daughter at the Murray Family Funeral Chapel. Rebekah suggested Rubino's for the lunch reception we wanted to put on afterwards. We fed about 75 folks buffet with a bar and it was great. Salads, chicken, lasagne, bread, even a couple of gluten free plates for those that needed it. We have checked out a lot of 'Italian' places in the area and are trying to find the best one. We had high hopes for Rubinos but the food was a bit of a miss. The good: Great ambiance, and the staff is well dressed and the tables look formal. The food came out quickly and our waitress was very fun. The clam chowder was delicious and had a good clam to chowder ratio. The cosmo was well mixed. And the Italian soda was good and had the right flavor. The bread came out fresh and warm and the oil and vinegar tasted light and fresh. The presentation was also lovely, The seafood feta had a good amount of seafood and was very good. The oysters were perfect and the shrimp were cooked just right. The bad: We ordered a dish with risotto and expected risotto for the price. When the dish came out it was a lump of rice pilaf instead. Very disappointed. The veal came out tough which is the opposite of what veal should be. The whole point is that you want tender meat. It's almost like it wasn't veal at all. The minestrone was unlike any we have ever had. Minestrone is a vegetable soup, that tends to be lighter but what we were served was thick like pea soup. The sole fish we were served lacked flavor. I get that sole is a white fish and lighter in flavor but the fish was just so bland and disappointing. On the opposite end of the spectrum the salad we ordered went overboard on the vinegar. Just too sour to eat. Lastly the parking is limited and fills up fast. I feel like (as a trained chef) that the biggest problems of our dinner came from the kitchen and somebody who doesn't really know what they are doing, especially in regards to Italian food. Example, meat should be rare and tender not tough, spice your fish, take the time to actually make the risotto (if you can), and don't just pour gigantic amounts of vinegarette on the salad. Sadly we had high hopes but we won't be back as we have discovered better Italian restaurants who know what they are doing. We paid too much money for such sad food, and in the end no matter how good the ambiance, no matter how great the wait staff is, the food is what matter most and this place just really missed the mark. read more
