I ran a food challenge on Nextdoor app looking for a few fish & chip places. Tugboat came up a few times. I was looking for a local place as I am in Roseville. Walking into the building it was easily accessible off Lincoln Blvd just getting into town. Was immediately greeted to place my order. The place was clean and owners were very warm welcoming. Nice people. I ordered the 2 piece fish & chips. It came out fairly quickly and fried well. Crunchy and flavorful. I'll have to return another time because the sushi looked great as well. read more

Tug Boat is our favorite spot for Fish n chips. My husband loves their oysters and chips. I always get a 1pc fish and chips and a California roll. The couple who own and run the restaurant are a vast improvement over the former owners. The current owners are quick to please and make really wonderful dishes for you. THEY MAKE YOU FEEL WELCOME AND APPRECIATED! BTW, I really like fries that are golden brown, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. PERFECT! This is my local go to for good sushi. The staff is polite and friendly with great service. The restaurant is somewhat small, but very comfortable. The restaurant was cute and clean in a strip mall location. Orders are placed at the counter and brought to your table. They have about 30 types of sushi that looked good but we were in the mood for fish and chips. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are enormous. The fish pieces were about a foot long. The tempura style coating on the fish and veggies was perfectly crispy. The lumpia was excellent. The chips were a big disappointment because they were just frozen crinkle cut fries. Our other criticism is there did not seem to be any salt on anything. I deducted a star because of the chips and lack of salt. The bathroom was clean. Stopped by Tugboats for lunch today and really enjoyed it! You order at the counter and they bring the food out to your table, which came out super fast. I got the Yummy Yummy Roll, hushpuppies, and lumpia--all were fresh and really good. The malt vinegar on the table goes perfectly with the hushpuppies, and the lumpia comes with a sweet and sour sauce that was great. Everyone working was super friendly and helpful. They've got a big menu with lots of appetizers, sushi, and fish options to choose from. The inside is cute too, with fun wall decorations that make it feel cozy. Only downside is the parking lot--it's pretty small and can be tough to get in and out of when it's busy. But overall, definitely a solid spot for lunch! read more

Wow! Very nice people run this little restaurant. The fish and chips are good. Their tartar sauce and ranch are also very good. We saw the great ratings on Yelp and decided we had to give tugboat a try. I'm glad we did. I ordered the lunch special; 1 fish, 3 onion rings, 3 lumpia, 3 zucchini, fries, and a canned drink for $10.99, my wife ordered the same, except she got 3 potstickers instead of lumpia. Lastly, we tried one sushi roll, California special, which turned out to be really good. This spot has been here for over 20 years, and this is our first time visiting. I had a better experience than I did years ago. My man and I came in here for my craving and Tugboat Fish & Chips was the place to go. It was an hour before closing and it looked like we had missed the rush. We were able to order right away at the register. We got a 2 piece fish & chips and prawn & chips. As we made our way to an open table, we sat and waited about 10 minutes for our food to arrive. They also brought ketchup, cocktail sauce and their infamous tarter sauce that I've never tasted anywhere else but at Tugboats! I did notice the fish was pretty thin. Over the years, it seems like the pieces got smaller. It's about 50/50 fish to batter... it still had that delicious taste of Tugboat, but with less fish than in the past. I like that they serve their meals with a few crispy onion rings and crinkle fries. They make everything to order!! I like the ocean theme they have going on inside Tugboat. We both had the lunch special which was only $11.99 and included a can of soda, your choice of lumpia or potstickers (we chose the potstickers and they were wonderful! The staff is always nice and courteous when I call and pick up. I've even called in orders close to closing and they have always been nice and accepted my order. I've been wanting to try Tugboat for some time now. They are a small local chain and it has amazed me since most fish and chips places I know are coastal, and this hardly is near a coastline. The reviews are generally favorable, so worth a try! Ordering online was simple and easy and ready on arrival. We ordered two three piece meals with fries, and it comes with a couple of onion rings. Obviously, everything is fried. The batter and breading, however, is very well done and not all that greasy. As per the photo they apparently use a good grade of breading, but not their own. Consistency is good. The fish tasted fresh and delicious yet I agree with other reviewers that the pieces are far too thin for breaded fish and chips. I also couldn't decipher the type of fish- cod, tilapia or ? Some fish and chip establishments give you a choice of type of fish. It comes with containers of tartar sauce, yet bland. Luckily, I had my own with diced pickles and a bit of vinegar for more punch and taste. The fries, crinkle type, were big and substantive but are probably frozen and not that fresh in taste. The couple of onion rings were ok. It came with a side of cole slaw that was quite good, probably the highlight of the meal. The three piece meal is huge and I was more than full, probably more food than I needed for a meal. They serve sushi as well, but I personally would stick to fish and chips; just my thing, as I'd rather have sushi at an authentic Japanese restaurant. Overall, I'd go back but get a smaller meal. It isn't that bad, and 3.5 stars is probably most accurate. My better half was not as impressed. I was amused as a British reviewer here panned this place, and commented that it is nothing like the UK fish and chips places. Well, some of the most awful fish and chips I ever had was in the UK... see past reviews. It's all relative and personal, I guess. Got my order in a brown paper bag. Came with ketchup and Tartar sauce but no malt vinegar. Also, no napkins. Typical fish and chips. Krinkle cut fries. Fish batter was not light not heavy. Kinda medium-heavy. Fish was thin but cooked well - moist inside. Scallops were delicious Prawns were ok but a little anemic Oyster batter was cook quite a lot more (see color difference in photo). Appropriate amount of salt on the order to enhance flavor. No alcohol sales. I'd say Tugboat is between a 3 and 4 star. 4 stars given. read more
