I'll start with the positive: the girl up front was very nice, had a great attitude, smiled, and was extremely helpful. Honestly, she needs to get a job somewhere else because she's worth a lot more than working for the owner of this Rubio's. Now for the rest... The food was actually good once we finally got it. We waited about 25 minutes, which is ridiculous for this type of restaurant. They don't have a cashier--you're forced to use the kiosks to place your order, and you can't even properly customize your food if you don't want certain vegetables or ingredients. I watched two customers ask for their money back and leave because of the service. This feels like a classic case of trying to save money by not hiring enough people, only to lose money through frustrated customers, bad service, and negative reviews. The cooks in the back were just standing around looking confused. The whole operation seemed like it needed some direction. Every employee appeared to be young, and honestly, I think having a more experienced person there to supervise and guide the staff would make a huge difference. To the owner: stop being cheap and invest in your restaurant. Get rid of the kiosks, put enough people on staff, and have someone experienced actually running the floor. You have some genuinely nice and helpful employees, but they need leadership and support. Despite all the chaos, the overall vibe wasn't bad, and the kids working there were very nice and helpful. WHAT IS THAT SMELL??? Sad to say it but Rubio's is going downhill. First of all, the price is outrageous. Just paid 15 bucks (before tip)for two tiny shrimp tacos, some chips and a small side of beans. One of the tacos had (2) shrimp and the other one had (3). Girl behind the counter was rude. She left my food sitting there for five minutes before I finally asked her if I could have it. Then she tossed it in a bag and handed it to me. "Can I get a fork with that? " I asked. I come here a lot to get a relatively healthy meal when i don't have time to cook. Rubio's is a great convenience in that aspect. But I'm frustrated due to incorrect orders. I often pay for extra protein in a California bowl. I get home only to find the standard single portion of protein. I rely on the extra protein meal for my diet and i paid for it. So I'm extremely irritated when I get home and this was overlooked in my order. This last time i got home and they left out the beans as well. Couple things but this is all on management not employees. Out of limes at a seafood taco place. It's 12 lunch time and they don't even have rugs rolled out. Unacceptable. You have to be set up everyday. Secondly. Walk in and first thing is there's a 20 minute wait for "catering". I had time so I waited but saw 4 people walk out. Understand if it's. Just but catering is known in advance and needs to be prepped and ready as you still cook for paying customers. Once again this is management. You have to know how to satisfy all customers. This Rubios is located at the end is strip mall. There were plenty of parking nearby. They have indoor and outdoor seating. I think people take out because there was plenty of seating. had to wait 9 minutes for service in line. the people ordering in front of me couldn't decide on their order and the staff waiting on them chatted about their style of dress and not about the menu. two customers, one in front of me and one behind me left as they were tired of standing in line waiting for service. when i finally arrived to order i complained about the wait and the staff commented that we had to be pleasant to customers no matter how long they took to order. the food arrived as ordered and had to be replaced. the food was terrible. we will never go back to that location. the restrooms were filthy. toilet paper and trash all over the floor and this was at 2. pm. should have been cleaned up. my husband used the mens restroom. the urinal was pulled out of the wall. very unprofessional, dirty, disgusting. they should be closed down. read more

Not for catering! Inside the restaurant is always clean but this review is for catering. It was an associate doctors birthday and the owner/head doctor decided to buy lunch. He chose Rubios catering platter. There are 12 of us in the office. He chose the taco bar which feeds 10-15. When it was picked up by myself (an employee/lead assistant) and delivered to the office for lunch, the doctor said, "THIS WAS $200?" I could've went to Taco Bell or a real Mexican Restaurant for this!" The birthday guy felt bad. Ten of the 12 got food and we literally had a single taco (with a spoon full of meat), some chips, a little salad (that was low also) and a little of the sides. I called and was told, we measure it out and that was the correct amount and we can throw in a little more but you'll have to come get it. I went back to the restaurant to be given about a cup of meat of each chicken and beef. Also, when I picked up the extra meat there was a coupon on the counter for $30 off catering. I was so upset. Everyone was so disappointed and still hungry. The two that didn't eat from the first batch each made a taco out of the new meat that I picked up. The comments where, "This is skimflaction", "they lied to us", "we could have went to Chuck E Cheese and had more food for $200", "the picture online does not look like the food they gave us". Needless to say we will not be ordering from Rubios again. I would like something to be done. I like your food I even have the app. However this left a bad taste in my mouth. If the CEO had ordered this he/she would've had a problem with the amount also. I think it should read, "feeds 8 people and probably lower the price to $80-$90", because 10-15 people was not correct. Purchased food on 12/26/2025. Quality has gone down over the years, portion size is getting smaller, but prices are up. I ordered a large cup of beans, and it was filled 3/4. This Rubio's is Located down the street from the mall in a strip mall, the parking lot is large but always seems crowded with crazy drivers that make up their own rules of the road. The location seems a little dated and in need of a makeover. They do have indoor and outdoor dining. It is clearly stated on the door and inside that you need a mask to order. I stopped by yesterday around 1245 and it didn't seem very crowded but it took about 20 minutes to get 2 tacos I ordered and they did not include the sauce in the bag that was requested. We did have a free Rubio's taco certificate from doing volunteer work for them a few years back, and it had no expiration date but it took the team leader entering some special code to be able to use it. What happened to this place? It used to be so good& tasted fresh. Ever time we go here my kids chicken bowl gets smaller. We've come less frequently. Today it wasn't even filled 1/3 of the way. One of my fish tacos was smaller than a chicken nugget & didn't have fish in it, the other smelled like rotting fish. They issued a refund& an apology but I will never go back. Two evenings ago, we went to Rubio's at this location for dinner... or Service from Kenzie and Adri was professional and friendly. The ambience is wonderful because ,let's face it, Carlsbad is a wonderful place and this location is clean and nice! The entrées we got were darn good ! It's nice to see that Rubio's is continuing to make good food. The problem is this. The chips suck! Clearly, there's a problem in keeping these chips warm. I thought the problem was that the chip warmer drawer was broken. Come to find there is no chip warmer drawer, and that they rely on a substandard light. Come on! Why focus so much on all those other things and leave something this simple undone? Chips are a big part of why I love eating at Rubios. These chips need a warming drawer! I hope corporate reads this and does their part in addressing this issue! Details like this matter, especially when there are so many other options out there. read more

This location used to be in our rotation for Taco Tuesdays. However, since the HORRIBLE experience I had here multiple times in a row. (I realize we all have bad days, and things go wrong, so please understand this was MULTIPLE times that this happened.) My order is a super simple order, nothing custom, nothing special, just three of their fish tacos and one kids meal. Here's the three WORST experiences I had - I tried calling in our order, ahead of time, to be picked up an hour from when I called it in, and STILL was forced to wait over 20 minutes for our food, and told that the walk in's came before my order, so I 'just have to wait'. And when I got home they forgot part of our order. The following time I called it in and didn't set the time but came in when they estimated it would be ready, and still waited 30 minutes for our food and they gave us the wrong items in our order, I assume we got part of someone else's order and they got part of ours. The last time I went here, since ordering on their app hadn't previously worked, and i still had to wait, I ordered through their app with a set pickup time an hour and a half prior to the time I wanted to pick it up, and while our order was correct this time, I waited for 40 minutes, after my pick up time. While I was there they were turning people away because the wait was over 45 minutes for food. When I heard them say that, I mentioned that my order was placed over an hour ago, and the management could literally care less, she refused to move my order up and basically told me she didnt' care. We will NEVER support this location again. The management here is a joke, and it's a shame we really used to like their food. read more

I come here regularly for lunch. I get the Cilantro lime quinoa bowl with chicken. It is delicious! The only negative thing I could say is that the chips & salsa are not very good. The chips are not salted appropriately and sometimes they taste stale. The salsa is also not salty enough. It's kind of bland in my opinion. I also don't like that if you order in store, they serve you without a tray. Your uncovered food is hand delivered, which makes me apprehensive. We stopped at Rubios in Carlsbad by the mall today. Serious craving for those delicious fish tacos. We got the fish tacos and my wife got the beer battered shrimp taco plate. The fish tacos tasted as good as ever but the portion of fish was very small compared to what they have served in the past. The shrimp tacos came with pico which we prefer not to have and the manager quickly corrected the order and brought a fresh plate back out. They were delicious! As always the salsa bar was excellent we had the chipotle, tomatillo, and mild salsa and all were very tasty. Overall we had a great lunch and the place was bright and open. Hinkley the on-duty manager is so busy talking to his own team members he does not address customers when they comes in. If he is supposed to be representing Rubios I doubt his shirt is supposed to be untucked wrinkled and his sleeves rolled up looking like a slob. My wife and I stood at the front counter for five minutes why three people stood there talking in themselves without greeting us or asking us to step up to register and take our order. I would suggest that the regional manager or district manager come give this store some attention because it needs it. intrigued by all the hype about Richard Blais and Ralph Rubio hooking up for innovative street tacos, I stopped by Rubio's for a late lunch. ordered two Baja-style FISH TACOS (beer-battered wild Alaska pollock, white sauce, pico, and shredded cabbage in a stone-ground corn tortilla). not particularly impressed. the fish was slightly undercooked (the batter had some wet spots) and the salsa was NOT the fresh pico de gallo fish tacos require. not awful just not great. took a flyer and ordered one each of the Blais tacos. ANCHO PO-BOY SHRIMP TACO (fried ancho-lime shrimp, Cajun aioli, shredded cabbage, and salsa fresca) and the HULA HULA CARNITAS TACO (shredded pork, mango salsa, cilantro, onion, and cotija cheese) were both just okay too. the BLAISED and GLAZED CRISPY CHICKEN TACO (fried chicken bites, Buffalo sauce, shredded cabbage, ranch dressing, pickled celery-jalapeno relish, and cotija cheese) which came in a folded flour tortilla was actually my favorite.
