I've only recently been introduced to the awesomeness that is fish tacos so while I was at the mall, I decided to give Rubio's a try. The tacos were really good, the beans were good and the chips were ok. They did have Vanilla Coke which is rare to find as a fountain drink so that's a huge plus. The service was excellent. This is an excellent Rubios location for catering. I had forgotten to order food for a 1pm meeting and needed to feed 10 people. I checked the catering menu online and it required orders to be placed 24hrs ahead. When I entered the shop around noon, I was helped by the manager Lydia. She was helpful and friendly and got my catering order ready in 20 minutes. The food was delicious and the presentation was awesome. I go this Rubios quite often as it is close and convenient for my family. The other day it was busy and I expected to wait a bit to get my large order which is no problem. After an HOUR I went and checked in and they had not even sent my order back. At that point they put it in and so I waited a while longer. When I got my food finally it was wrong. I wasn't going to wait another 20 min so I cut my losses and took the food to my family. Rubios gave me a "free entree" coupon which didn't really cover the cost of all the food that was wrong...but I finally got food and all was well...I go back this weekend and the young man behind the counter was seemingly lacking in the customer service department. He scoffed at the change I had to make to a burrito for health reasons and then through another difficulty with the machines was not very helpful. I am not a complainer by any means when it comes to customer service as I have been on both sides of the coin, but it just seems like I have had several negative experiences lately at my favorite Rubios and it is discouraging. Of course I will keep going, but maybe a manager will see this and do some additional training for some of their younger members of the team. read more

Last week, on Jan. 30th 2012. I went to have lunch with my mom at the Rubio's located at 5500 Grossmont center Dr. #D22, La Mesa CA 91942. I was cordially greeted by a young lady who took my order. I paid with my M/C debit card. She handed me my receipt but did not hand my card back. After several minutes I asked for my card. She then took a rubbing of my card with a blank piece of receipt paper and a pencil. (Not with a card rubbing machine, which I would have expected if a business was having problems with their electronic card reading system being down) When I asked her why she did that she responded by saying the card wouldn't read and that it wasn't my card but the card reader and that she would enter it manually. I was skeptical but shrugged it off, not wanting to seem rude or question her. (Which I should have) At any rate I enjoyed my Fish Tacos Especial and went on with my day. However the incident didn't leave the back of my mind. I even dreamed about it in slow motion because my brain was trying to tell me what was wrong with that picture. I woke from the dream and checked my receipt. Lo and behold, the card reader had scanned my card just fine. It was then that I realized that your employee had stolen my card information. I did not return to the store and tell the manager because too often it's a ring or group that is scamming people in this way and management is also involved. Since I dearly love your fish tacos, I paid in cash this week when I went to Rubio's. I will be filing an official complaint with corporate. Thank you for enjoying my little story. I have a copy of my receipt and will be bringing it to law enforcements attention as well. BTW, this "story" is true. read more

I just had a horrible experience with ordering online. First I called to place the order, but after calling three times with no answer I placed my order online, being very careful to click the La Mesa location, and when I showed up my order had somehow been redirected to the college grove location. Conveniently there is no option to cancel the online order or redirect it to the right location. Im on my lunchbreak, that means I dont have time to drive all over chasing my magically disappearing rubios order. I hope someone really enjoys eating that meal I paid for. read more

Ive never been disappointed in rubios for the food but i will not come back to this location because of the employees. I called in a to go order 50 minutes before I had to ask what's going on with my order. Sat down at a table right in front of the registers & counters so i could see when my food came out. when i got there i saw a bag sitting there but the worker told me it would be a few more minutes and then asked if that was okay?? well i don't really have a choice? even though it's been 25 minutes.. Then i proceeded to sit there for another 35 minutes watching them walk past the order I thought was mine and it was all along!? Then after i asked where my food was she turned around grabbed it and said here you go? i asked to speak to the manager who then put all the blame on her employees and asked "what would you like me to do?" didn't offer anything didn't say sorry just waited for me to answer her like i'm gonna ask for my food to be free? that wasn't my goal or plan. I just want her to pay attention to the service they are providing which is awful. read more

Was craving tacos today so decided to go into rubios, the fish tacos are my fav. Always very delicious and fresh. The staff was very friendly and attentive, that's why I keep coming back to this location. I also had a Togo order, thank you for making it with the same love and service as the guest that dine in. I was at this Rubio's restaurant in La Mesa, Grossmont Center location yesterday for a quick lunch. I ordered one fish taco Especial. This taco is supposed to have cheese and guacamole on it. The man working there brought my taco outside where I was sitting. It had NO CHEESE AND NO GUACAMOLE on it. So I went in the restaurant and found the man that served me and told him. He said there was, they were under the fish. I looked and didn't see any so told him no there wasn't, he argued with me and me, saying I was wrong. I ate it BUT: THERE WAS NO CHEESE AND NO GUACAMOLE ANYWHERE ON OR UNDER THE FISH. This is the second time I have had a problem with this Rubio's located at Grossmont Center in La Mesa. I will NEVER go to this place again AND I will tell anyone who mentions the place how bad they are. They ripped me off and charged me for it! read more

I've always enjoyed Rubios. This location was our 1st time and I'm really sorry we visited here. The prices are high but the food is always prepared well. This store seemed to lack the prep in the kitchen. Way too much missing and no time orc quality in the food prep. The front staff were nice. I always judge a restaurant by the restroom. My first experience with catering from Rubio's was amazing! The staff members that I worked with were Marissa and Omar and they were always accommodating and helpful with suggestions as well as courteous. I would strongly suggest if you are having a catering type of function and you want good food and plenty of it, you should look into this option. I know I will again. The prices were very reasonable for what I ordered, and the food was delicious. Everyone at my party(baby shower) commented on the freshness and quality of the food. I have been here countless times, with friends, or sometimes on own, sometimes for lunch during work day. Never had a problem for years until last Sunday afternoon when I walked in to order a two taco original fish taco combo. The female cashier with blonde hair asked me one or two tacos, and I said, well, they only have a two taco plate, she insisted, one taco plate, even though it was not on menu. OK, not that hungry. I paid my 8 something dollars for one taco plate with small drink. What arrived looked like a bullet shaped tiny piece of breaded fish, no sauce, no lettuce, on a tiny tortilla. Chips and the usual beans. I ate the taco in 3 bites, wondering how long it had been sitting out. Felt totally cheated of a meal and 8 plus dollars. For 2 dollars more, could have had their real fish tacos with the sauce, etc. normal size. Maybe. Maybe not at this location. Went up to the cashier and just let her know this was about the worst meal I ever had, in fact, I was planning to go somewhere else and have a real meal. Asked and found out she was the manager. The only response I got was oh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, we just do not know what kind of tacos were are getting? Really? Is this something new? You serve the real fish tacos on days you have inventory, and just serve junk on other days, and one now has no idea if it arrives with or without any sauce or lettuce? I asked for my money back, nope, no, we just cannot do this. No, can't do that. We do not do this. Found out she was the manager. The name on my receipt is Luis. Well, what can you do? Another kid with braces who was working the other ordering spot chimed in with something like, well, you can go now and the manager had to take her aside to tell her to be quiet. So, I get it. No guarantees on what you are getting when you order a fish taco, no guarantee of sauce or lettuce with it, or what size tortilla. No refund policy or coupon for bad food and beyond poor service, no acknowledge of the email I sent to Rubios site about my customer experience. I will not be back, and going to rethink all the other great choices for a quick lunch, or eating out with friends. Done. You lost your loyal customer of decades yesterday. read more

I love their CA bowl with wild grilled Mahi Mahi. They serve it in a white china bowl with silverware. Doesn't feel or taste like fastfood; but instead, is healthy delicious food served quickly and beautifully :) read more

Been going to Rubio's for years. Always tasty. Definitely a good alternative top taco shop stuff. Unfortunately, the portion sizes have been shrinking noticeably. At $10 for a steak burrito and a drink, the burrito should have more than 1/4 cup of steak in it. The burritos used to be round, but now they just lay kind of flat.
