Their food is delicious, and we have ordered here many times. But the mistakes are unacceptable, and we're moving on. Tonight they forgot one of our three entrees. When I called, they denied I had an order. They finally found the order, and offered me a credit. When I asked them to instead just bring me my food, they said it would be over an hour. Absolutely unacceptable. Luckily DoorDash is good about issuing refunds. But I won't be ordering from Ruby again. There are plenty of better and more reliable Thai restaurants in the area. A cheery, quiet, large restaurant decorated with Thai artifacts, it has maintained its high standards and great flavors for the many years we've been coming. The menu is long and includes helpful photos. If you don't avoid deep fried appetizers, try the lime tofu. We almost always get the Tom Kha (coconut soup with crisp fresh veggies) and one of the curries and noodle dishes. I still haven't tried most of the menu offerings, which can be made vegetarian. I have been to Ruby of Siam in Skokie quite a few times. That obviously means that I love their food. I typically order the One bite chicken, crying tiger and Kanom Jeeb for appetizers. For the main course I order their steamed sea bass in red curry sauce. The food tastes consistently good! The variety of noodle and curry dishes is awesome too! The decor is traditional Thai which makes it feel more authentic than the fusion places with their modern, benign look. Staff is courteous and friendly; probably friends and family working there. Been coming here for years. Never had a dish I didn't like but do have my favorites. Green tofu curry and tom yum soup for some reason always hits the spot. Both are flavorful and my go to thai comfort foods. Their fried rice is also amazing... have never really been a fan of fried rice but theirs is always so flavorful. I'd say their biggest flaw is consistency. Although last night's dishes were well balanced in terms of veggie to curry ratio or tofu n mushroom to soup ratio, there are times when soup for example will come with just a couple mushrooms and very little tofu. Choice of heat level..mild, medium, hot also tends to depend or vary with each visit. I always order my dishes medium spicy and at times you can barely taste the heat but yesterday's was a perfect medium spicy. Overheard diners next to us point out same flaw. They mentioned the inconsistency over the years but were raving about their yummy dishes and asked server if there was a new chef last night as dishes all came out perfect to which he responded couple new but most are same and have been there for years. Funny that I had been wondering the same as I was enjoying all of last night's dishes. Do want to mention servers here are always nice and polite. We stopped by on Sunday and the place was empty. That should've been a sign. Eventually, we were greeted as no one working in the restaurant took notice of us for at least two minutes. We picked out a table and sat down and the staff presented us with menus. We ordered an appetizer of Crab Meat Won Tons and two entrees. The Crab Meat Won Tons arrived first and they were strange tasting. Something was off. We couldn't even finish them. Our entrees arrived; one sauteed vegetables with tofu and the other pad thai. The vegetable dish was good but the pad thai was strange. Again, something was off. We had a coconut bubble tea and Jasmin hot tea as well. Both of the teas were fine. The price exceeded the quality of the meal by a wide margin. We both felt that the meal was overpriced given the quality of the food and the portions. We will not return to Ruby of Siam. read more

Food is really spicy here, even at the "Mild" level. They have Mild, Medium and Hot levels. We ordered the same food at each level and I had the Mild one. It was super spicy to my taste buds. I have been to ruby many times before and have yet to write a review!! so here it goes.... maybe this place is a little to authentic for me... or not authentic enough??? I'm not a huge fan of Thai like my boyfriend is....so when we go out for Thai it is always upon his request. That being said, we got spoiled in Australia with the most authentic fresh Thai food restaurants you can get! It was just amazing and I'm assuming very authentic since Australia has a big Thai population. Anyways, Ruby is always packed no matter what time you go. Still, there are enough tables where I have never had to wait. The service is a little slow sometimes, but they are very kind and accommodating. There is ALWAYS a buy one entree get one half off coupon in the mail, and one time we forgot it at home and they were kind enough to just give us the half off anyways! GREAT customer service ;-) The menu is rather extensive and can be overwhelming at times. Good thing I only get one dish: bean thread noodles with mixed vegetables EXTRA SPICY! This dish is usually called pad woon sen, but Ruby actually doesn't have it on their menu, but are nice enough to make it anyways (can't be too hard, right?). Terrible experience. I ordered two vegan entrees and spring rolls. When I got home, both entrees had egg in them. I called and they offered to refund my money. Great, even though it was 40 minutes before their stated closing time, I accepted. 5 minutes later they called me back and asked for my credit card number so they could charge me for the spring rolls again. So I really don't mind this place at all. However over the years I have only eaten inside of it maybe once or twice. It's more of a pick-up place for me. I did delivery a couple times but think picking up is your best option. I only order one thing and am always pleased with it. I get the beef Pad See Iew. I'm not very explorative of the menu. There was a time where I'd also get the beef tom yum soup but I stopped really wanting to get that. For a time I also got the panang curry, but felt like the portion was small for the price. My takeout portion for the noodle dish is always hefty and really hot when I pick up. There's a fair amount of broccoli as well. I usually call ahead and show up a bit earlier than when they say it will be ready. (It's a short drive). I'm not sure if the pricing on their online menus are very accurate so confirm when you call or keep a takeout menu handy! I wouldn't get the Pad See Iew very spicy at all. I did this once and it destroyed it. My mouth was aflame! Just normal is straight. I also sometimes get a Thai Iced Tea. Came here once a couple of months ago and have now a regular. The food here is absolutely delicious and very authentic. I usually get a basil chicken with a side of fried rice and my girlfriend is obsessed with the curry fried rice. Both are delicious. I came in once for the lunch buffet and tried numerous items and they were all really good. They do offer the lunch buffet daily and it's about $11 and a great way to try multiple items. The Thai iced tea is really good here and I get it every time. There are so many other menu items that look delicious which I'm dying to try. The look of the place is cozy and charming. But also very sloppy and unorganized. There is a soda cooler in front and the front desk make it appear sloppy and takes away from the otherwise authentic decor. The staff is very nice but they do speak and understand English very well which can make it hard to communicate and you end up the having point to your items on the menu. They do mean well and try their best. Overall a great restaurant and I plan on returning often read more

For my money, this is the best damn Thai food in Chicagoland. I have yet to go somewhere (besides Arun's but I ain't paying no $200 for a pad thai) that beats this place. Pot Pan is right by my house and I used to live by butterfly on Grand but this place beats their asses down like a motorcycle gang on a Vespa enthusiast. Funny thing about Thai food, its like a perfect storm of allergen laden foods, shellfish, peanuts and soy. I can eats it all so I can laugh while you twitch and gag on the floor. The decor is very standard as far as Thai restaurant stuff, lots of fake gold, red and ornamental objects that most of us find obnoxious but in Thailand, they think of them as doilies. You should come here to holler at the food tho, which is why I get: Pad Thai - go to dish for any Americano trying to look like they are down with ethnic cuisine. Theirs is good but really take yourself out of the comfort zone with: Pad See Ewe - Eww? No Ewe. Delish and not too spicy, anything here they can make spicy so be sure to ask for a bottle and diaper change if you want it mild. Lad Nar - I actually did not see this on the menu but I think I was still hungover. When I would get this here, it was one of the those religious experiences, the gates would open, cherubs would stroke my belly, and the harp music. Tom Kha - Sometimes called tom kar. A delish coconut milk soup that is is made with lemongrass & other greens. Get it with tofu. I get everything with tofu although their tofu is the fried kind and not the fresh kind they used to use. I think the fried stuff keeps longer. Bring back the freshness! Moo Ping - BAM! Smack you upside your lemongrass Tofu with some pork, homey. These are amazing. Pad Prik Khing - So good. The noodles which they do not mention are quite exquisite and delicate. Bubble tea latte's - Amazing. Really stepped these up since last time. They come in these new cute little plastic cups with asian characters on em. And they even put a lil whipped cream on top for your fat ass. They also now carry Village Creamery Ice Cream, which is a favorite of mine and located exclusively in Skokie across from the giant vat of urine and disease known as the Oakton Pool. But I digress, Village Creamery Ice Cream is the best, they have flavors like Cotton Candy, Avocado and Donut & Cream. DONUT & CREAM! Give them a shot you will not regret it. Try this location, in Skokie, I know they have a location in the city but I have never been there. This place is awesome cuz they are open late on Sunday so I can handle my biz and get home in time to tuck in the kiddies. read more

The prices of the Pad Thai have increased and the amount of the ingredients, particularly chicken and tofu, has decreased. ZERO STARS HORRIBLE!!!! Our beloved Ruby of Siam no longer exists, except in name only....not even that...."RUBY" was not lit. My husband and I have been going here for approx. 25 years; we brought friends, family, business associates and clients. The entire change was very noticeable as soon as we walked in: no friendly HELLO, no tablecloths, no uniforms (dressed in dirty jeans and sneakers), and worst of all sloppy presentation and horribly, smelly and probably, microwaved duck. Having spent six months in Thailand recently, I was apprehensive to return home and be able to have the same satisfying experience at some of my old and reliable Thai food haunts. As I figured, I have been underwhelmed by every Thai food experience since. My mother, a seasoned Thai food afficianado, swears by this place and though I wasn't completely floored by it, it did have some nice authentic touches. In the culinary arena, their peanut sauce was TO DIE FOR-best I've tried and enough to inspire a ton of memories of Bangkok food stalls to come flooding back. The sauce was amazing with their chicken satay (the only satay I tried though I'm sure its just as good with all the others too) and their noodle portion sizes are substantial considering how inexpensive everything is (a dinner for two with apps. was about than $25 but that was without alcohol since the place is BYOB). As for the service, they wait staff was definitely NOT super attentive though the food was ridiculously fast. It was a nice touch that their uniforms included traditional Thai touches such as the fact that they were each wearing sarongs with of the King or Queen's colors (yellow, pink, or blue) accented with the Thai monarchy's emblem, a point of extreme importance for all Thai people.
