WTF!!! This location changed they're entire awesome 50's white & red diner look. It's still 50's-ish but all about fashion now with lame ass busts all around the wall & pictures & a big screen with strange looping scenes. It's also now a brown sepia-like color scheme. At least the food hasn't changed, but I won't ever come back here again. I'll go to every other location who has kept the charming decor that has been Ruby's since I was a kid, with its old-fashioned bicycles, petal & bumper cars displayed. I remember going to eat at the Main Place location with my family when I was 10, before they removed it from the mall. I sure hope it's only this location that they chose to go through this terrible transformation. Maybe cuz it's at SC which is all about high fashion here. I really wish they would change it back though. It was great coming to have lunch here after some shopping, or after a nice bike ride with Ruby's as the destination. Loved the patio seating too. I really should have written this review a long time ago cuz it's been a while that I stopped coming here since it all changed...but while I passed by on Fri. I just had to take a picture of the atrocity & take the time to write this review. I really LOVE Ruby's burgers & fries & wonderfully thick, flavorful shakes...but the nostalgic ambiance is a big part of it too. They have standard fare that you can get anywhere else but what makes Ruby's Diner unique is the 40's/50's theme but, when I was there last, i could barely hear the music. Ate at this Ruby's for breakfast about 2 months ago. I always get the cinnamon French toast combo and that was pretty good and is recommended. The manager is very rude though and actually yelled at me when I told him the coffee tasted like there was a cigarette in it (very burnt). Had to get out of the heat so we decided to go to the nicer side of SCP. We decided to eat at Rubys since we had the two toddlers with us. We were seated right away since we just missed the lunch rush. We first ordered a cherry coke and banana shake. Awesome shake.. good chunks of banana and ice cream. The kids loved it especially my youngest. She took the whole container. My wife ordered the guacamole burger and I had the fish tacos. I love how big the tacos were and it came with sour cream and guac. The fish was ok but it tasted great all together. My wife's burger tasted ok I'm not too fond of guac with my burger. My kids had the chicken tenders and fries. I love how they have bottomless fries but I m not feeling the skinny extra crispy fries. Service was excellent. So my family's experience has been sub par the last 2-3 times we've been to the South Coast Plaza location. While the waitress & other staff were great, the issue was with the food quality. My wife's burger was over cooked and there was barely any Ruby's sauce on it so it was very dry. My turkey burger taste wasn't fresh and one point was concerned it was not fully cooked. Our kids meals were done well, no issues. I feel like their business as a whole has taken a turn. The last few times we noticed the restaurant not being as busy as it used to be. Not sure if competition is wielding its ugly head bc of inconsistency in the food. I while they have good most of the time, this location is not the best. I recommend the location in Anaheim by Disneyland. read more

Ordered a turkey burger that was so greasy I couldn't even completely wash it off my hands! They had a lot of workers so I'm still wondering why their service is soooo slow. My family and I came here for lunch on a Saturday. It was fairly busy, since it's in a popular mall and it was peak eating hours. Our server did her job, but the service was just average. And the food was fine, nothing special. I ordered a guacamole burger and there was like a tablespoon of guacamole in there. At first I thought they hadn't put any on there since we didn't see it. My cousin also ordered a guacamole burger and she also said there was barely any in there. I know we're in an avocado shortage, but it was disappointing. All in all, a decent meal, but I don't know if I'd necessarily go back to this Ruby's. I've had better food and service at other locations. Came in with my family, was seated right away and John was our server. Great service!!!! Food was brought out fast and our child had her food within minutes which was great. Drinks were refilled before they hit bottom. Food was good- I ordered a seafood combo and the portions are big. Kids meal was done right. Everyone was friendly and courteous. A balloon artist made my child a balloon and it was fun. Restaurant was clean and I would come here again no question. (The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is that the women's restroom is a single bathroom and we waited a good twenty minutes for the restroom.) Called twice to get directions. They told me over the phone they were across the street from old Navy near the garden walk. Ok, so what! I had to walk across the street via the garden bridge due to bad direction and my laziness to look on the Web . After ordering the turkey burger, based on the good looks of the menu, again my mistake; however , if your too hungry to read like myself sometimes, you'll notice the burger looks like a grilled burger with no bacon in sight. What they delivered with excellent customer service, was what appeared to be some kind of burger that looked like it went to Iraq and ran over an IED. So basically what I'm trying to say, is the cook burnt the bottom and couldn't take it off the grill without tearing it to pieces. There was no evidence of a burnt burger because the cook probably left the bottom part of my burger on the grill. (Equals half a buger) With a positive attitude, I assumed that the burger would blow my mind with the awesome experiance of a great tasting burger. Instead, it was just plain and horrible, sorry no metaphors for this sentence. I asked for ranch to cover up this crime scene, yet; the ranch was not enough so rescue my taste buds. We've been taking our grand kids to see Santa at South Coast Plaza (Crystal Court) every Christmas Eve morning for the last 15-17 years. We used to have breakfast at Ruby's afterwards for quite a few years but stopped due to less than satisfactory service. This year we decided to give it a try again and were pleasantly surprised by the (apparent) change in management. It was a great experience for us and our server, Omar, was absolutely incredible! He was very attentive even though the restaurant was crowded and our group of 12 or so had to leave at different times. We talked with the manager, Debbie, after we ate and expressed our positive experience. We'll definitely go there again next year or if we're hungry again when we're in South Coast Plaza before then. read more

Good - We waited about five minutes to be seated, pretty good for peak time and a large party. - I ordered the guacamole burger medium rare and it came out medium rare with a generous topping of guac. - They gave the kids very, very generous scoops of ice cream w/chocolate sauce, whipped cream and a cherry for their b-days. Bad - They sat us in a large booth. We had two kids in our party, none of us are huge, but I felt cramped and was eating with my elbows tucked in the entire time. Unfortunately there really aren't better options for parties larger than four who want elbow room. - Everybody in my party was served before I was. My order got lost in the kitchen and my food came out a good ten minutes later. One of the kids in my party finished their meal as I was getting mine. I ordered my burger with a side of tomatoes instead of fries. When they realized they were behind on my burger, they brought out four slices of a large tomato on a large piece of green leaf lettuce swimming on a large plate. - I ordered a wheat bun, it came out on white. I didn't say anything b/c I didn't want to wait any longer. - This location is very loud, so don't expect to converse. No sound deadening materials at all. - They weren't very proactive about hauling away dishes/cups we were done with which made the table feel even smaller. - Women's bathroom is only one toilet/sink combo, so only one person at a time. read more

I love Ruby's Diner restaurants and the South Coast Plaza location is one of my local spots. In the past 6 months this location has been hit or miss on their food service, but this review is based on my most recent visit last week. There was no host working at the front, but one of the servers did greet us right away as we were waiting to be sat. Once seated in our booth, the server promptly came to the table and took our drink order. We put in our food order as soon as our drinks were brought. We received our food within around 15-20 minutes and the burgers were cooked perfect. Our order was correct and I would definitely recommend this Ruby's over the other Costa Mesa location. read more

What is there not to like about Ruby's? Sure it's a chain, but it's one of Southern California's finest with consistently good food and pleasant staff. This location at South Coast Plaza is very nice and opens at 07:00 AM--a great treat to indulge in breakfast when you're done oggling all the expensive stores. I really like the Lite Breakfast Tacos with turkey sausage (they are huge! And flavorful! and on whole wheat tortillas!) Any Ruby's milkshake is to die for and best yet? Most Ruby's locations in OC beach cities are on a pier! Overlooking fishies! And the water! And surfers! What makes good food better? Eating it in a fun location. Score. read more

My friend had a coupon for breakfast, buy one get the other one free. We met up on a Sunday morning around 9:30. A few people were dining and our server quickly approached our table. She was so sweet and had a great smile and deposition. I ordered a cheese omelette and my friend ordered the vege. The food was decent with plentiful cheese, good coffee,the breakfast potatoes tasted fresh but the bacon was just ok. Ruby's is my default restaurant for when I'm at South Coast and I can't think of anything else I'd want to eat. I always get a cheeseburger with wheat bun and turkey patty instead of beef. You can elect to add a salad for a $1, which I sometimes indulge in since the fries and shake and cheese can get pretty heavy after a few bites. No arugula or fancy leaves in this salad; it's plain old iceberg with roma tomatoes and olives in it. I like the fact that I can order from the kid's menu without penalties (though some servers don't give me the kid's drink and some do) when I'm just not that hungry. If I get the kid's sized burger my bill ends up being somewhere around $5-6 before tip and that's fine by me. This location will give you a little ice cream cone (vanilla) if you ask your server nicely. I can't say for sure if other Ruby's locations do this too, but this one does. This Ruby's does get mad busy during the weekends, so plan your shopping and dining wisely. Try and nab a seat before 11:30 if you are in a party of 3 or larger.
