The staff here are very friendly. I've gotten the BLTA here once and it was good. This time i got a pastrami sandwich which is panini grilled. The pickles in it were very crunchy and the pastrami tasted so delicious. I love how the sandwiches come with a little thing of pasta. read more

This is my second visit at this location. On my first visit, I ordered one Avocado Toast. It came with sliced avocados with Arugula on a sourdough bread. On top of that, they drizzled it with olive oil, crushed peppers flakes, salt and pepper. It was super fresh, delicious, and very fillings. On my second visit, I had the delicious MJ Famous Breakfast Burrito. It was filled with scrambled eggs, sausage, fresh baby potatoes, green onions, refried beans, tomatoes, cheddar and MJ salsa on side. This burrito was super delicious. Great customer service. They are few tables outside and a very small waiting area inside. Don't forget to check-in to get a free cookie or coffee. I got myself a chocolate chips cookie treat. The seating area inside is limited and a little messy with boxes and supplies sitting out, but there are a few tables outside. Walked in here at 1pm (not breakfast hours) we were greeted by a nice aroma coming out of the kitchen and a very nice lady. It was our first time here so we weren't really sure what to order. I went with the avocado toast and I asked if it was possible to add an egg white. Since it was past breakfast I knew they would probably tell me no, the cashier still went to the kitchen and asked if they could do an egg white for me and she said "yes" so that was super awesome ! Food was delicious, egg was not greasy. Avocado was fresh and arugula was perfect. I always love freshness in food and I really enjoyed it. When ordering online you aren't able to pay with a gift certificate and the estimated pick up time is never right. Allow at least 15 minutes more. Ordered an egg white omelet, and it was not an omelet, it was more like a scramble and was a very small portion. Definitely not worth the $13 price. The potatoes were undercooked and very greasy. MJs is such a little hidden gem for anyone that works in the nearby area. Their food is always fresh, they make it to order, and they truly care about the food being correct and coming out good. They always are so kind and accommodating with my special requests and changes I have to make to my food due to a chronic intestinal illness I have and I appreciate that OH SO much! Just that little thing makes such a huge difference for people like me! Everyone in there is always so kind and professional but in a down to earth way. The lady that runs the register is and answers the phone is so sweet. If someone has a bad thing to say about this place then I would question them on who was actually at fault. Like the person saying they were upset that they forgot MJs closed at 2 and didn't pick their sandwich up in time .. sorry but that's on you bud. It's not their fault that they have hours and close at a certain time. Next time, now that you are aware of the timing just give them a call and say hey, I'm running a few minutes behind and see if they will hang a bag on the chair outside for you or leave it on the table outside for you. It's a small place but it's always clean and due to the staff feels very welcoming and inviting. I love sitting outside while I wait for my order in the sun before having to go back into the office. A few of my favs off the menu for those that are having trouble deciding: Turkey cranberry havarti sandwich (the bread is good!) The caprese panini Their salads are all good honestly. Honestly I wanted to give a better review because the staff is nice. But they've been messing up my orders either adding what I said not to or not adding what I ordered. It's always a hit or miss and I don't have the time to run back with a 30 min lunch. Also my last order that they messed up I had to run back and tell them to cancel it cause it was completely wrong. And they told me they would refund it and it was never refunded. I'm very upset. And well I wish that they would make my order right. Been coming to MJ's Cafe for years as it's right down the street from my workplace. Yesterday, for the first time I tried their Cheeseburger. YES, they make Burgers! On all the review sites, I never saw a single picture so, I never tried it. SO, here you go! It was an amazing, Angus, Patty, on a brioche bun, made order just how you like it. It did not disappoint! The food was good, but beware of very little seating. I felt like it was more of a "to-go" place. Only tables are outside and not comfortable on a hot day. I have been delaying writing this review because I have been trying to give MJ's a chance to redeem themselves. I work across the street from them and love their food. That being said, the past 10 orders (yes, you heard that right, 10 previous orders) my order for 10:30 pickup is consistently 20 minutes late on being prepared in time for pickup. Mind you, I take my lunch at 10:45 AM and always set pick up time for 10:30 knowing that they are notorious for late prep time. Today I ordered there for the very last time. I set my pick up for 10:30 AM went on lunch at 10:45 and SURPRISE! my food was yet again not ready. It is now 10:54 AM and they just handed me my food. Absolutely unacceptable service. Have been here several times and great quick spot for workday lunch. Large salad menu (which ironically is hard to find in Costa Mesa). Today I got the Grilled Chicken Club sandwich and I honestly have to say it might be one of the best clubs I have had. Would love to see them have someone come in a design a proper eating space inside but other than that would highly recommend. We went on a stealth mission to see if we might want to apply for one of their job openings. Since we had never even heard of the place we thought we needed to try the food first. My friend ordered the Chinese Chicken Salad and I ordered the MJ's club. What a great sandwich! It was huge and I brought half home to my hubby. My friend loved her salad too! My order was supposed to be ready at 12:18 but I waited to go pick up until 12:35 because they are notorious for not having your order ready on time. When I asked the cooks if it was almost ready, they couldn't find the ticket and proceeded to ask the cashier if she was aware of the order. She printed the ticket right away and handed to the cooks who then prepared it immediately. Had I not inquired, who knows how long it would have taken the cashier to make the cooks aware of the order. It's clear they take more orders than they can handle so if you value your time, DONT GIVE THIS PLACE YOUR BUSINESS. Customer service: The lady with the fake high pitched voice is extremely passive aggressive. Her response to not having an order fulfilled was - "we don't have any apples... awkward silence... I can give you a refund or you can get it another time." There was no offer to make another, and when I asked could you just make something else, she proceeds to tell me it'll be a 30min wait. The order was placed at around 11am the pick up was 11:25am I was there before rush hour at 11:28am and there was no one else around so why 30 mins. And this isn't the first time. Previously there would be a wait for an iced coffee. It just comes down to if she can be bothered to make it and if no one else is around to make it then she'll tell you it'll be a 30min wait. Her attitude is just aggressive and just puts you off your meal. The best time to probably go is for breakfast but I probably won't be returning here anytime soon just based on interactions with this individual. read more

MJ Cafe is quaint and small before covid-19 hit there was maybe enough for about three or four tables inside with perhaps another three or four standard outside for seating. Everything looks clean and everyone is friendly. With regards to the food, for such a small location, they produce quite a tasty variety. I love their California split sandwich as well as their soups but basically everything is tasty. They offer a very convenient call ahead or order online option in which the food is prepared and set at the time you requested and you could come and just immediately pick up the food and go. Since covid-19 hit the outdoor seating has remained and expanded, and they have begun to offer a food prep option. Love the food and convenience but they need a dedicated barista. When you order a coffee drink, they rely on the one cashier to make the drink. This is very unproductive during rush hour. I waited 20 mins first time as the person was so busy I had to get in line again to remind the person to make my drink. Second time 10 minutes, again I went up. First time here and I love it! I'm vegetarian so I got the Natural sandwich without cheese & with hummus instead and it was really good! I ordered one to go and got it with another type of bread - both good! The size of the sandwich was large and I liked how they gave a pickle and some pasta salad on the side - you know they're not scamming you since they're giving quite a bit lol I loved the presentation as well. I ordered half a sandwich and then got called into a last minute meeting and when I came out and ran across the street to go pick up my lunch they were closed. It was shortly after 2pm and I didn't realize they had closed at 2pm. I called them when I was standing outside their door and they didn't pick up the call. I left a message and no one called me back either. The next morning I decided to drop by their Cafe to see if my food was sitting there and for sure it was. I would have appreciated it if 1) they would haved called me before they closed to remind me they were going to close and to pick up my food 2) at least call me back after I left them a message, and 3) put my food in the fridge or offer to make me a new HALF a sandwich! Love this place; there's a location next to my work and right across the street from my boyfriends house which makes it my go to place when they are open. Coffee is great, the garden bagel and loaded potato are my favorites so far. Their muffins are to die for; freshly baked every day and they sell out fast.
