Rudy's may not be "authentic" Mexican, but it's still good food. The tequila selection is impressive, although I usually stick with tamer fare, such as the sangria, which is really yummy. Another reviewer mentioned the runny queso. It is, but it's really very good- just a different consistency than many. I'm not really one for Tex-Mex, but this place has a pretty good range of options. I ended up getting some chicken quesadillas and it was pretty satisfying. Couldn't finish it all so I brought it home and can definitely say their food reheats pretty well, which you might need to do since their portions are reasonably sized. Apparently their margaritas are cheap as margaritas go - I don't do mixed drinks, but the friends who I went with who do were impressed. They also have a pretty good range of bottled beers and beers on tap to go with their enormous dinner portions. Not expensive and with decent food. It's worth stopping into at least once. I was pleasantly surprised with the appetizer nachos, although they were a bit greasy. I got the combination plate to try a few things, and the tacos were basically store bought, but the enchilada and... other thing I can't remember were both pretty good. My girlfriend loved her veggie quesdilla, and her margarita was very good. The service, however, left something to be desired. It took a while to get our drinks (although quick to get the order in) and also the appetizer, and this was not during any sort of rush. And the waitress and waiter who both came to our table were apparently not on the same page at all and neither seemed to care that a) one of them had already been there and b) that we were there at all. I think I love the IDEA of Rudy's more than Rudy's itself. It's got decent food, nice atmosphere, for a fair price. But it seems hit-or-miss. I've had more bad margaritas than good ones. I've resolved to stop buying them. The food is generally good, but not stellar. On the plus side, the chips and salsa are AMAZING, so I'll stop by and pick up some to-go from time to time. The nachos are good, and my dad said his pulled-pork sandwich was one of the best he's ever had. We wanted to apply a 3.5 but couldn't get the 1/2 star...we really like Rudy's and have been on many occasions. You truly get what you order and pay for. Their drinks are good, pretty strong and the food isn't greasy and smothered in cheese to cover poor preparation like many Mexican restaurants. Because I try and eat clean, I always go for the grilled skewer which is served with roasted veggies, rice, and salad. I love this meal and have to be famished to even put a good dent in it! I really like Rudy's because they're not trying to be something they're not. They're not an innovative, upscale Mexican restaurant--they're slinging solid Tex-Mex food hot, fast and cheap. Rudy's is my safety, I go here alot as I live close by and it's easy. The food isn't the best, but if you you like Tex-Mex you can't really go wrong. Usually I try to get a seat at the bar as the service is typically better at the bar everywhere. I've come to know alot of the servers/bartenders on a first name basis and love going here for a quick meal on a weeknight or a Friday night out with friends. I love their 18 Karat Margaritas, although at $8+ each the bill can ad up quickly! They have a wide range of tequila which is always great, and the bartenders will give you their opinions on which ones to try. My fiance and I usually try a new one everytime we go, and more often than not we've ended up stopping at a liquor store to buy a bottle of the new tequila we try. read more

Drinks were the best part. I've had much better "Mexican" food but it is all right for Boston. Our guacamole was not the freshest because it tasted like it was made with an overripe avocado. When we made the comment to our waitress, the manager came over to speak to use. She told us that they make the guacamole "fresh daily." Sure, you can make it fresh daily but it still won't taste fresh if you make it with over-ripe avocados. I wasn't sure whether to give it 2 or 3 stars but decided to go with 3 because they have nice decor inside and the service was all right. Rudy's is a nice Mexican restaurant located in Teele Sq and usually draws a good local crowd during the week. I have frequented this place probably once every 2-3 months and although prices are very reasonable, I have come to expect less every time I eat there. Specifically, this time was not a great experience. To begin with, the waitress we had was not very personable and did a very bare-minimum job throughout our stay. She was very rushed and just didn't seem like she was happy to be working and serving. We usually get chips and salsa to begin with and each time I as myself "is this salsa right out of a jar or homemade?" Unfortunately I think the salsa come right off a truck, jar opened, and poured into a serving dish. For a Mexican restaurant this is very low. The main courses and combo plates are a great deal $$ wise and portions are generous. Each main course typically comes with sides of rice and beans, standard for Mexican cuisine. This one particular visit I can safely say the rice was made hours ago and was re-heated in a microwave. They were extremely overcooked and very mushy to an almost mashed potato like feel. The beans also tasted like they were sitting in a heater for hours and not fresh my any means. This trip to Rudys was not position and has me re-thinking a future visit. Up until now I have been satisfied but it seems each time I go things get worse. Time will tell if I return and if my experience improves. read more

I usually like to try interesting-sounding ones with pear or cranberry juice. The food is very average, kind of greasy. Rudy's is a great go-to, local restaurant when you're in the mood for mexican/tex mex cuisine. The ingredients are fresh, portions are big and value is great. They serve complimentary fresh nachos and salsa. Their beef tacos are the best I've ever had and I love the fact that they have hard shell option. The jalapeño popper appetizers are delicious and Rudy's uses cheddar cheese versus cream cheese which I prefer. I recently tried the vegetable burrito which was o.k but I would never get it again simply because the vegetables they used were strange for a burrito (carrots, zucchini, squash). We had a great night at Rudy's this weekend, and I totally recommend it. The cocktails were great, and the atmosphere was PERFECT for a cold winter night. Everything from the decor to the fireplace and the great energy were great. As far as the food, it was tasty, reliable Tex-Mex. We both agreed that the nachos were some of the best we've ever had. We each got combo plates for dinner as well, which were solid. The flan for dessert was exceptional, too. Also, make sure you get cocktails. They are tasty and strong, to say the least. As far as some of the areas for improvement, there were a couple minor ones: - It is a high turnover joint with no reservations, so the experience felt slightly rushed. - If you are driving, it is street parking so plan ahead. - I was REALLY hoping for some great tacos, but even our server said they weren't special. I consider this a neighborhood staple. Honestly if you're looking for super-authentic Mexican food, this isn't what they're about. This is Tex-mex, and it's consistently great quality! Affordable, delicious comfort food, awesome drinks, and fantastic service always from some of the nicest staff! Their nachos and chili con queso are amazing, and their salsa is on point too - not usually too spicy, more cooling with cilantro which I appreciate! A comforting atmosphere, a very warm and welcoming kitschy style to it if a little old school. Cheap Tex mex food. They really skimp on meat and fillings for the food - everything is just tortillas and lettuce and cheese. My plate allegedly included an enchilada that I had trouble identifying. My wife ordered fish tacos that we literally had a hard time finding any fish on -- just tortillas filled with lettuce for the most part. Waitress asked if it they were ok after seeing she hadn't touched them. We said no and explained why and she charged us for them anyway! First, let me say that I lived over ten years in the south (Louisiana and Texas) and that I have had my fair share of good to downright fantastic Mexican and Tex-Mex. That said, I think Rudy's is one of the closest and best places to get authentic Tex-Mex in the Boston area. Definitely "respectable" Tex-Mex! I have read the other reviews and understand that some people believe Rudy's food is not up to par. However, I have found that a lot of restaurants in Boston that claim to be Mexican/Tex-Mex are actually serving Spanish dishes...there IS a difference! I think this may be the main source of confusion. I have been to Rudy's many times and love the food. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the service can be a little too relaxed. However, this is not to say that the the service is bad. The reason I don't judge them too harshly is because the whole atmosphere reflects the the southern mentality. If you've been there before, they greet you like a friend. All the waiters I've had are upbeat yet down-to-earth. In fact, as almost everyone has pointed out, the decor and overall effect is right on target. I recommend their chimichangas, although I am a sucker for their fresh made salsa, queso con carne, and warm chips! Rudy's has a great selection of margaritas! The Oaxaca margarita has an interesting smoky flavor and always comes with a warning from the bar staff (are you sure you want this kind of margarita?!). i'm just so in love with this place. I can honestly say i think they make the best margarita in the Boston metro area. Their Horny Toad margarita is my ideal of perfection. 3 ingredients is all you need. Their grilled entrees are really where it's at and the steak and grilled kabobs are the best. I used to really like this place. Maybe it's my fault for going vegetarian and no longer ordering the pulled pork quesadilla (which was always pretty good), but the last three times I've eaten here, they've really been phoning it in. The vegetarian quesadilla, for instance? Stuffed full of veggies that don't even make sense (I think mine had carrots) and are barely cooked. Today was the last straw. I'd had a really difficult training run in the morning, and thought that some bean and cheese laden Tex-Mex would be just the thing for recovery. My Combo Plate #3 was supposed to contain a guacamole taco, enchilada verde, and mini bean burrito, plus rice. The taco was meh, since the guac is pretty bad. Gummy and not chunky enough. But everyone's got their preferred preparation, so I'll let it slide as a matter of taste. The enchilada and burrito were literally indistinguishable. Pasty refried beans (probably cooked in lard, it occurred to me later; so much for vegetarianism) in a boring tortilla with a sprinkling of cheese. No verde sauce. A shot of habanero hot sauce punched it up a little, but what a disappointment. The rice was dry and pedestrian. Overall, a dry, leftovery-tasting plate. I suspect that the entire dish was made up in prep a few days ago, then just tossed in the convection oven when I ordered. The biggest disappointment was my wife's spinach quesadilla. The menu said it contained "fresh spinach," and while this spinach may have been fresh at some point in time, it looked like someone had dumped two cans into a bowl and microwaved it on high for 10 minutes. Dead, mushy spinach. And an everliving s***-ton of it, at that. No sense of proportion at all. There was some cheese, black beans, and corn hiding in there somewhere. Why on EARTH not just make a black bean/corn quesadilla and add some fresh, uncooked baby spinach leaves? A handful would be plenty. Quality over quantity. I know Rudy's is a casual place, and I've had tasty stuff here in the past, so I'll decline to give it one star. But it's really been sloppy the last few years, and that appallingly bad quesadilla made me want not to go back. Oh well. If I want good, high-end Mexican food, I can go to Painted Burro. Rudy's has extensive margarita options and good food for the price. Sometimes you have to wait for a table, but I have always felt it was worth it. It's a great place to relax and catch up with a group of friends, or go on a casual date. Servers are courteous, friendly, and accommodating. They are usually quick to bring out homemade tortilla chips and salsa fresca. I like that you can get margaritas made with fresh lime juice, or in some cases fruit purees, instead of just the cheap, sugary or corn syrup-laden mixes that are so prevalent. My favorites are the Prickly Pear Margarita, the Prickly Peach Margarita, and the Calientes Margarita (with jalapeno tequila). Their combo plates, taco plates, enchilada plates, and quesadillas are generally all good deals. They have been flexible about substitutions on combo plates -- I loved their spinach enchilada special and when it wasn't on the menu, I asked for it and got it. For vegetarian food this place is fantastic as there are plenty of options. You can get refried bean, spinach, or even guacamole tacos and they are all very good. One thing I have not had good luck with here is chicken. For some reason the two times I recall getting chicken -- in an enchilada once, and in a taco another time -- the meat either seemed on the dry / flavorless side or just not quite as fresh as I would like. However, the pulled pork quesadilla and the beef tacos that I tried were very good. The atmosphere is comfortable and people can converse at normal volume -- there is usually music playing but it isn't so loud that you have to shout over it. Overall this place is a great value if you have the time to hang out and get a drink or two. Or three. read more

SO GOOD. Easily the best Mexican I've ever had. Boyfriend and I split the chips, guac, and salsa. The guac is the.absolute.best. ever. Hands down. It's absolutely worth the price- you get at least two whole avocado's worth of guac. It's chunky and very light on the filler (onion, tomato, and cilantro I think?) and served up in half an avocado shell. SO so so worth it, but incredibly filling. The salsa is fantastic. So light, a little sweet, and flavorful! Almost as good as the guac. For dinner we ordered the chicken skewer, and one of the combo plates. For the price (About $10 I think?) the combo plates are a ridiculously good deal. Ours came with an enchilada, a hard shell taco, rice, and MORE GUAC. All of it was delicious, but it was a mountain of food! The chicken skewer was even better. Soy honey marinated chicken breasts blackened on a skewer, set on a bed of spanish rice with grilled veggies. The chicken is just perfect- nice and crispy, tender, and a little sweet. It's very light on the marinade so it's not heavy and saucy. The veggies were grilled to perfection and offer a lot of variety: carrots, zucchini, squash, broccoli, bell peppers, and tomato.. The rice it's served with is good, nothing super amazing but still tasty! The salad that the chicken skewer comes with is a nice addition. Fresh field greens with sprouts, tomato, and cukes. Their jalapeno ranch dressing is killer. Loved it. SO YEAH this place is ballin. You gotta go, at least for the guac. Whenever I come here I almost always get the spinach quesadilla. Out of all the vegetarian options, it really hits the sweet spot of being satisfying without being loaded with cheese. The veggie burrito is well-done, too. The drinks are strong and very reasonably priced. There's plenty of variety, too. More than once I've been curious about a drink at another table. What I probably like best about this place, though, is how good of a job it does at being a neighborhood hangout. I am a big fan of Rudy's and have been for years. I went there as a kid with my older sister and had no idea where it was, just knew it was awesome mexican food a drive away from Dedham, where she lived at the time. I was amazed to find out years later when living in Davis Square that the mexican place of my childhood dreams was within walking distance! The food is amazing, the service can be hit or miss, but that doesn't really detract points in my opinion. You can only control individual personalities to a certain extent. A friend introduced us to Rudy's a little over a year ago, and we've made it one of our regulars. Great margaritas at decent prices, and so many flavors! We like the Oaxaca and the raspberry one, but the classic is perfection too. Bottomless chips and salsa, guac made to order, and really delicious food make Rudy's great as both a bar and a restaurant. They're always accommodating with allergies or alterations to dishes, and the service has always been really great, whether we've been a party of two or of eight. My girlfriend now lives up the street, which is dangerous for our wallets, but we're excited to be walking distance from it-- both because finding parking is a nightmare, and because it means we don't have to worry about how we're getting home after all the margaritas. read more

This place is a dive, but what a wonderful dive it is. Combination plates are a fantastic glop of your favorite stereotypical foods at a very amenable price. They have vegetarian options.
