Ate there with coworkers before the pandemic. The food is absolutely NOT for Mexicans expecting actual Mexican food. It is one of those restaurants that makes the food for American customers, not Mexicans, or Mexican-Americans that are close to their culture and k ow what the food should look like, smell like, and taste like. I have not gotten food from there since and I will never be back. The service was good, but my review is about the food. I don't know what happened, but the service has just gone super downhill. I feel bad writing this, because the staff is very nice, but my last two visits here were not very enjoyable. Today, we were given one small bowl of chips, and one small bowl of salsa to share between a party of 6 people. Everyone had to reach over the table to just grab a chip and dip it in the salsa. We had to ask for another bowl of chips and salsa for the other side of the table. My cousin and I also both ordered two cheese enchiladas, but we were both only given one. We were able to get our second enchilada, but our first ones were lukewarm by the time the second arrived. Never got a drink refill as well. I really think if this place wants to do well and get better reviews, they need to work more on customer service, not in a sense of kindness, but in a sense of frequently checking on tables for refills, giving reasonable amounts of chips and salsa depending on party size, correct temperature for food, and actually bringing out the correct orders. read more

Today was our last visit to this restaurant. We were seated promptly but then ignored for at least 10 minutes. The place was not busy at 5pm. One table with three guests, besides us two, and a couple people in the Cantina. We ordered our food along with two bowls of lentil soup. Our main courses did come to the table after what seemed like 15 minutes. During that wait time not a single employee came to our table but they did visit the neighboring table and the cantina many times. Had to ask for utensils as well as extra chips. The lentil soups never made it to the table and we told the waitress to take them off the bill. The main courses were extremely salty and the beef was full of fat chunks. What a huge disappointment. Since this past summer this place has been slipping in food quality and service. Not worth our time or money to go back and be ignored and served subpar food. read more

Family-owned Mexican restaurant in a cute little corner of Old Town Monrovia. I really, really wanted to like this place since I'm a huge fan of some of its neighboring establishments and a supporter of small businesses, but it was sooooo basic and I currently have a bad case of diner's/buyer's remorse. The service was great, but the food was mediocre. Portions were decent, but overpriced for quality. In all seriousness, if I had to rate every part of my meal in order from best to worst, the best thing I had was my ice water. I ordered the chicken taquitos combination -- rice and beans were okay, but the taquitos were pretty tasteless. My boyfriend had the enchiladas combination and was equally unimpressed. I took my leftovers to-go and will probably give it to a homeless person because I hate to waste food. So I asked for a fresh side of sour cream to help make up for the blandness, and didn't realize 'til later they charged me $1.95 for it. Sad. Overall, 4 stars for service, but only 2 stars for quality. Don't think I'll be back. read more

Three grande tostadas, A half order of guacamole, and each had a water. With tip, $72. I was shocked how much the prices have gone up. I understand, a lot of these restaurants had a tough time during the scamDemic, but come on guys, A tostada is mostly lettuce and very little meat that was put in the tostada. The place definitely was not crowded for a Friday night, and I'm pretty sure, the price increase has a lot to do with that. read more

Excellent service, delicious cuisine. I had the Chile Relleno and Taco combo plate. The Chile Relleno was very good, tasty sauce lightly on top, smooth creamy Cheese inside. The taco had abundant shredded beef, no hamburger meat here. My friend had the green chilie cheese enchilada combo plate and a glass of wine. We both cleaned our plates. It seems location is everything, and now nearly 25 years later, Rudy and family have expanded to a large restaurant with a bar, a banquet room, and even a few of their original outdoor seating tables. Like most places that have been around a while, people seem to have strong opinions about the place, its fare, and even the service. Such opinions are usually founded in experiences. If you're looking for pheasant under glass, best to try one of the French-inspired fusion places up the block. But if you grew up in a large family, if you believe delicious food served by strangers who treat you like friends is an expression of cariñoso, if you feel that sitting around a table with large hot plates and cold drinks is more than just eating--rather, it's the glue that holds relationships together--then Rudy's is your place. Portions are large and flavorful. I recently enjoyed the chicken fajitas, and my kids shared a plate of nachos. All were tasty and not over salted. The food does not have a lot of picante-level heat, but I dont take my younguns to a family restaurant for the heater... it's not their style there, and you should know that going in. Just about everything comes with rice and beans, and the gentle warning of "hot plate" when they drop it off. I happen to be a pretty low-salt human being, so the low salt food, salsa, and main courses does just fine for me. Some complain that there isn't enough salt in the food-- there's a shaker on the table, Mildred-- but I generally don't touch the thing. We visited yesterday to have "breakfast with Santa." The restaurant was a madhouse with kids running all over the place, Santa handing out gifts, servers navigating the packed restaurant with trays and hot plates, and a general melee of eating. I never--and I mean NEVER--have seen a server with an attitude or doing anything but smiling. On the contrary, they were kind to the kids, laughing with the little ones, patting their heads, smiling, and treating my children like they were their own nieces and nephews. Through it all, Rudy was there, walking around proudly admiring his dream-- and not just the dream of owning a successful restaurant... but serving parents and grandparents and children in a place where everyone is made to feel like family. It's almost always loud, it's sometimes too slow, sometimes too fast, there's hot food, and plenty of it. This is 3.5 stars because the service is always great! They aren't a 5-star review for me because the chicken fajitas were bland and I had to salt them a lot. Also, they only gave me 3 corn tortillas, not 4 like I have historically gotten at other Mexican restaurants when I order fajitas. Service is always great. The servers I've had have always been very nice and helpful. They frequent the multiple rooms constantly and are great about getting refills or checking on orders. The decor is fabulous. They have gorgeous paintings up and flags strung all over the ceiling. It's really a pretty restaurant and there is so much Mexican decor. It's very colorful in there and full of pretty art! They also have a visit from Santa every year! The ladies restroom is always clean and stocked, which is also appreciated! Overall, I really like this place and so does my family. We plan to come back again and again, but I know the food doesn't have the flavor it could at other Mexican restaurants that I like. read more

Decided to stop by while with a friend to get a drink and super glad I did (I drank, my friend didn't)!! Once we arrived, we were seated quick and immediately greeted by staff. Despite not having a drink menu and not exactly knowing what to order, Sally (who was super nice and helpful) was able to suggest a custom drink that I loved. She was great!! I wish I had gotten the name of it before leaving, but I guess that means I'll have to go for another visit. It's been a while since I've gone somewhere for a drink, and I'm glad we stopped by Rudy's. All staff members were wearing masks and personal guards were up for each outdoor table. My boyfriend loves pozole, but this time, he didn't finish it. I didn't like anything other than the meat. The taste of the broth was not the traditional albondigas taste, it had TOO MUCH celery. It was a celery soup! The carrots were hard and the one tiny piece of zucchini was over cooked. I've never had an albóndiga soup with celery, and the pieces of onion were huge. (Review is only for their tamales purchased during the Friday night Monrovia Street Fair) Last Friday I purchased 3 tamales from Rudy's during the Friday night street fair. They have a small set up right outside their restaurant that you can purchase tamales (chicken, pork, jalapeno & cheese, sweet) for only a mere $2 a piece. I have always seen Rudy's set up for selling tamales every time I am at the street fair and so I decided to just try some. I ended up purchasing: Chicken- I thought this was good, but have had better tamales. But at $2 a piece, I would get this again. I think there was a good amount of chicken in the tamale and the chicken was seasoned right. Pork- The pork was also good, but again, I have had better. But as mentioned above, $2 for a tamale is a great price and I would purchase this again. The pork was seasoned right and the filling was a fair amount. Sweet- filled with apples, it kind of reminded me of an apple pie but could have been sweeter and would have nice to have some cinnamon added to the apple. Because this tamale is made with corn, it had a different taste to it when combined with the apple. I am not sure if I really liked that combination and not sure if I would want to purchase another one. ------------------------------- Total purchase $6 Service was pretty quick. Tamales are served nice and warm (kept in a steamer) and employees are nice. There are a few outdoor tables set up for you to enjoy your tamales if you do purchase them and want to eat them right then and there. But make sure you pick up plenty of napkins because they are a little oily when you pill back the paper wrapper and corn husk. read more

My family and I recently went there again. To get your moneys worth, don't get the bowl of soup. The combo plates are the best items for your money. I got the bowl of abondigas soup ($8.00) and it only had two meatballs that was 1"x1", it was tasty with lots of veggies but I would have walked out of there full and happy if I put that $8.00 in one of their combo plates. So what I did was put the rest of my kids rice into the soup so it gave it some bulk. I still love Rudy's but will never get any of the soups again. read more

I came here a few days ago. It was just alright. It seems like there are about two seating sections to the restaurant. We were led to the back room. It was a sunny evening, so the shades were fully drawn (some of the blinds looked broken), but the light inside was too dim (and no, it was not a romantic setting). Our hostess/servers did their job, but they were a bit dry. No smiles, but not mean. A huge difference from whoever was serving another table near us. They were so inviting and happy to serve their guests. I think maybe they knew each other so ok, I guess I understand that regulars will get more smiles and such, but it made us feel a bit... left out? Haha. The food was ok. My husband got the carne asada burrito that was topped with a red sauce that tasted like tomato paste with some peppers thrown in. He said the burrito without the sauce may have been better, but it wasn't anything special. I will say it was a nice big size. I had Rudy's enchiladas. They actually tasted quite good but they were kinda of cold, maybe room temperature! I tried to convince myself that maybe there was a cold cream sauce they topped it with... but even the inside was at the most, warm. The rice and beans were nothing interesting. What I enjoyed most was the salsa from the chips and salsa they serve at the beginning of the meal. The salsa seemed very fresh and was delicious, although my husband said he wished it was spicy because it was more of a pico de gallo. This is a solid 3 star review (but I'll put 4 because they were nice). I don't think the food was SUPER tasty. Come here if you want your bang for your buck. I got El GIGANTE. which, no lie, was HUGE. I typically eat a lot and I could only finish half the burrito. It's a semi wet burrito so I ate it with a fork and knife. Huge burrito for $10? That's a pretty solid deal. The service was pretty good, service was nice and friendly and non judgmental when I ordered a margarita at 11am heh. My friends got the pasole and menudo. I found out that I'm not a big fan of how tripe is cooked in menudo. I love it in pho and hot pot but not in mexican food and dim sum I guess. Anyways, the burrito was super big. It tasted alright but not the best burrito I've ever had. Their pico de gaillo and chips is pretty good, maybe above average compared to most places. The margarita felt huge! My first experience in a Mexican restaurant that had it's very own distinctive style of presentation and taste. They serve their homemade poco de gallo with the chips while you wait for the food. If you prefer salsa just ask, they have dark red and green. The El Gigante burrito was delicious while the tacos were tacos. Highly recommend trying this place at least once.
