Finally got to try this place! Cute little brunch place at the King George hub -- convenient location for those taking the skytrain as it's right at the King George station. Underground (paid) parking but lots of spots available. You can do 1hr free parking then pay for the remainder of time you're there. Modern ambiance, but kind of smaller than I expected. Good for medium size groups. Now for the food... great oat milk latte! Delicious corn fritters, and I added a chicken sausage on the side. It had everything -- protein, veggies, guacamole, and a slight taste of heat on the drizzled aioli sauce. My friend ordered the Oy oy oy bowl which she said was also tasty. Their menu has everything! They have 1 girl working behind the pastries counter and only 2 servers in a packed restaurant. The pastry girl greeted us but the servers were so flustered that I had to flag them down to tell them I had a reservation. My first time here I loved the girly decor but this time all I saw were dirty dishes on the table. The servers looked stressed and one girl even dropped a tray full of glasses. There was a long wait to order, get our food, and get our bill. My friend ordered the pork belly eggs benny and it was as delicious as last time. I ordered the truffled mushroom frittata and it was nothing special. It was mostly overcooked eggs with mushrooms and a slice of toast that tasted plain. I told the server it was my friend's birthday and I wanted something special for her. Last time I ordered creme brûlée and they put sparklers on it and "happy birthday" with icing sugar. This time their dessert options were all brunch items: tiramisu French toast, chocolate French toast, hot cakes. A $175 charge for cancelling a reservation made less than 24 hours earlier is outrageous. Even worse, when I called the restaurant as instructed by their confirmation email, the staff member cancelled the reservation and never mentioned that a $175 fee would be charged. Our friends' flights from Ontario were unexpectedly cancelled the morning of our reservation, and I immediately called the restaurant out of courtesy. Instead of appreciating the advance notice, they charged us $175 for absolutely nothing. The most frustrating part is that if someone had simply warned me about the fee during the phone call, we would have shown up. Instead, the restaurant chose to stay silent and take our money. This policy, combined with the complete lack of transparency, feels more like a cash grab than reasonable customer service. Proceed with caution before booking online here. read more

I love Australian cafe's. The food is great, and the atmosphere is chic. Ruex delivered both of these things. The food had a twist of creativity in both the taste and the look, satisfying your palette and your camera. And just like in Australia, their coffee was good but super tiny. Our favorite dish was the peaches and cream hotcakes. Very refreshing. It also had some cream cheese, so it was sweet and savory. Their chicken on their waffle was very nice as well, but their waffle was a savory waffle. Which took away the pleasant combo of sweet and savory. But still very good. I would just order more friend chicken next time. well cooked, crispy pork belly too mmm. Price was decent as portions were generous. Service was friendly, and the food took a moderate food amount of time. We went at 2pm to eat brunch, so hoping that it wouldn't take longer during more peak hours. Parking is a bit of a hassle as it's underground parking. A bit of a trek to come to the restaurant, but I think that's the norm now in greater Vancouver area. Sadly the norm is also paid parking with no validation. But I won't dock off points for the restaurant for that Their menu rotates, so I would love to come back and try something new. read more

Greeted right away by server, as they were quite full and with no rsv there was nothing quickly available other than bar seating which we took. We were given water fairly quickly and took our drink order but again as they were super busy getting our drink served to a bit of time. They had a large party and their tables were all full. Again took a bit of time before we were able to order our food and even longer to get it. (This in no way is complaint just stating fact as we understand that with a full house things aren't going to be fast or normal though I think more communication to customers on this goes a long way) The chicken schnitty and waffles wasn't exactly what I expected but I never clarified with the servers what if was so that was my bad. The taste was nice, albeit a bit different than the usual but was nice and filling. The tomatoes sauce was perfectly acidic and the waffles were soft and fluffy. Decently tasty and hearty, would I order again? No but that's cuz I think what I have in my head for chicken and waffles doesn't involve tomatoes. Again it was tasty. Wife's biscoff french toast looked beautiful and was quite crispy on the exterior. There is quite a nice crunch to it. I did find the bread to be bit dense but to hold the filling inside I guess it needs to be. This is def a very filling dish, sweet and luxurious. Please give it a try. Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday and got the chicken supreme, a fried shrimp dish to share, and their Nutella brownie to share. The fried shrimp dish had the flavour, but the texture was abysmal. They were soggy messes.. With all that batter on the outside, they should be serving something crispy. The chicken supreme was a little better but half the chicken was very dry and overcooked, making it too hard for this soft mouth. The flavours on this were good too though and the potato rectangle was very good. The Nutella brownie was okay, but their scoop of ice cream is enough for a mouse. The strawberries aren't fresh, and overall the brownie was just okay. I would say the flavours are good here, but the execution isn't quite there yet. Service was okay as well. Service was quick, ordered the Tostadas Eggs Benedict which is slow cooked zucchini and eggplant, poached egg and roasted red pepper hollandaise on english muffin. served with pave potato. The flavour of the main dish was very reminiscent of faint mexican tastes and the guacamole and chip felt like a bonus rather then a feature. The pave potato needs ketchup/sauce or it tastes too bland. At the price of $22, I think the restaurant is a place to go for convenience of location and aesthetics. This dish should not be chosen if you want strong flabours. Aesthetics 5/5, Service 2/5 (had to flag server multiple times for Ketchup, and taste of the dish ordered (2/5). Anyone out there ever enjoy a Biscoff cookie? We did, purely by coincidence, on our flight here (or did that turn out to be foreshadowing? ). Well however you choose to look at, we gained a whole new perspective of (and appreciation for) an old friend thanks to Ruex Cafe and Bar. We found their "Biscoff French Toast" to be a revelation in the breakfast genre. We struggled to properly categorize this as "breakfast" when it sure seemed to simultaneously resemble "dessert." I mean, when trying to compare the flavors it encompasses, references to both an "apple fritter" and "Crème brûlée" were mentioned. All I can tell you is that Dana blurted out, "Dude!" after her first bite (so you KNOW it was good). We decided to balance our sweet cravings with something from the savory side of the menu and landed on the "Udon Carbonara." While I was hesitant to include this as part of our breakfast (because it felt more like a dinner option), it proved to be an excellent companion. The noodles were buttery (without being overwhelmingly heavy) and the poached egg added a burst of creaminess. While the ambiance isn't noteworthy here, the food certainly is! My very honest detailed bad food review. (Sorry forgot to take photos before we dug in) Took our aunt here for a birthday lunch. So not worth the price tag. Bad review for the food only. For a restaurant charging $25-$30pp at minimum, they should have much better food control. We ended up ordering the paneer fries, shakshuka, steak and eggs, udon carbonara, and the biscoff waffle. Absolutely underwhelming. PANEER FRIES $18: First off the paneer fries were priced at $18 FOR 4 LITTLE STICKS (about 4"x1" long).. And they were SO salty. Which follows into the next dish UDON CARBONARA $21: Again the portion was small. Compared to most restaurants it would not qualify as an entree serving. Carbonara is supposed to be thick and saucy. We got watery noodles, like they didn't bother to strain the udon fully before tossing in the sauce. ALSO so under seasoned, missing salt. SHAKSHUKA $23: This dish was so acidic. Tasted like straight canned tomatoes. No balance at all, we also added pork belly to it. Dry as a mother. You'd think it would be crispy or juicy.. no just dry and chewy. STEAK AND EGGS $31+$10upgrade to 8oz: Okay steak was good, I will say they cooked the steak perfectly medium. However they smeared the entire plate with this super sweet beet purée which ruined the entire dish for us because everything just tasted like the purée. BISCOFF FRENCH TOAST $24: This was by far the better dish out of everything but still so underwhelming. Nothing super wow about it that would make us want to keep eating it. Didn't have much biscoff flavour to be honest. After our entire meal, and a single coke, we ended up paying $174 with tip for 4 of us. Oh and we didn't leave full. Servers deserved the tip but whoever owns/runs this restaurant needs to re-train their chefs or hire new ones. Just my very honest review. read more

Bringing the sleek Sydney brunch scene to Surrey, Ruex is an elegant cafe that also boasts a dinner and cocktail menu. I've been here once for brunch and once for dinner now, and it is solidly worth a try! I'll start with my brunch experience: the Biscoff French toast was incredible. I'm not usually a sweet brunch person; I'm more savory. But this almost swung me to the other side. The caramelized banana, crunchy breading, and cinnamon-y filling... whew. I still think about it sometimes, and it's been months. The eggs Benedict and omelette were also both very good, but the French toast took the cake. Prices weren't cheap ($25ish per plate?), but that french toast.... worth it. My dinner experience was a little less exciting. I tried two pastas, the pomodoro and udon carbonara. They were both decent; the cook time on both made for a delightfully chewy noodle, but the flavors were a little one-note. The pavlova we also got for dessert was disappointing. The berry compote overly sweet, and the pavlova itself was too chewy--it almost felt a little stale. Again, the prices weren't cheap ($23ish for the pastas and $15 for the pavlova), and for dinner, I don't think it was as worth it. Food was exceptionally delicious. Both dishes had so many flavors, different textures, and a unique fusion. Supreme chicken came with potato pure that was fried, so it gave a crunchy texture yet soft inside. The veges that came with the chicken went really well with the chicken. The miso salmon was topped with something crunchy, and it sat on rice cakes (something I usually see in Korean restaurants). The sauce with the salmon was a bit too salty, though. For dessert, berry pavlova. I was a bit disappointed because they used meringue cookies and whipped cream. I was expecting a homemade meringue shell with cream inside. Their version had ice cream inside, which was cool. The restaurant was good overall: food was tasty and decor was very nice. What a great new spot for brunch that runs until 4 pm every day! Located at the end of the line on King George in Surrey it's light and bright with purse hooks on tables (finally ). Apparently a chain from Australia hopefully more locations to come! Staff is friendly and the menu has a great selection of savoury and sweet items to try as well as a decent coffee selection. What we ate today: Eggplant omelette: the best way to describe this is a thin egg crepe rolled up and filled with soft eggplant and other veggies topped with perfectly cooked prawns and drizzled over with a savoury sauce that was a bit on the salty side so a little goes a long way! The Ruex brekkie burger is a great spin on your breakfast McMuffins. Homemade patty is delicious and comes with a stack of the yummiest potato gratin! Celebrated a friend's birthday at Ruex Cafe and we tried out the Dine Out dinner menu. Their dine out menu had a great vegetarian and non vegetarian options. Each dish that came to us was well seasoned and made perfectly to our liking! The appetizers were great, especially the paneer fries! That was truly a dish I didn't expect to be so good. Our entrees for Dine Out were also delicious. I love that this place offers a wide range of dishes from around the world, and how they put their own twist to it. Our server was also very attentive and ensured we always had water on our glasses and everything else. It's not a big place, with only 2 servers available that evening. Had the chance to try this new cafe and bar out in fraser hwy. One thing is for sure, this place is NOT your typical dinner place. Its all just Tapas style dinning so dont come here hungry. Just a place to hang and chill with drinks after dinner. They are probably better for brunch And nothing else. Since we came for tapas after 3pm...we decided to try some of the offerings. They are encouraging shared plates for all. Any dish is meant to be shared they said. Potato croquettes, lamb popsicles, jerk chicken, steak bites, and the udon carbonara. The udon carbonara is probably the best dish of all. Creamy and made the right way using eff yolks and lots and lots of pecorino and parmegiano regianno. Served with a perfectly poached egg on top. So good. All the others are average. Presentation is nice. But taste and flavour, are just average. What kinda turned me off was the price for value ration. You will not be full here with 1-2 orders. Prices are too steep and yet the quantity too small. No value at all. Lamb popsicle were good but looked malnourished. Jerk chicken was way off the jerk flavour. Tasted more Like chicken karaage with 5 spice powder. Jerk chicken is grilled, not fried and breaded. Simple as that. The croquettes were probably the next best dish. Served hot and crunchy with a moist center. The steak bites were the biggest let down. For $32...u get literally 3-4 small nuggets of tenderloin. Small as in 1 fork baby serving. It was such a disappointed. The plate was filled with polenta and paper thin veggies han meat. Sure it looked like a garden when presented...but the value wasnt there. The tenderloin was cooked well tho. So tender and juicy. Excellent execution. This is one of those places that you come hungry and leave hungrier. There is a DJ every fri and sat night, which i dont understand why. The place is small the the blaring speakers makes it hard to talk to people. The manager was nice enough to listen to my 2 cents about the steak and she gladly gave me another small Piece to compensate. Told me they plan on taking it off the menu. Would i repeat? Never. No value for money at all. Too pricey for the ambiance and location and food. There is a nice bar area, but then, its not a night club. The manager said they are usually a brunch place durng the day and transforms into a "bar" every fri and sat night. Lol. Found this to be really funny. Hubby and I went to try Dine Out at the Ruex Cafe, and good excuse to try the restaurants at the new hub being built around the King George Skytrain Station. We weren't overly familiar with the immediate area so we parked at the underground parkade (first hour parking is free) and walked the long way around to the front door. Logic tells me there must be an elevator or a staircase nearby, but I didn't find it in the twilight. The place was pretty busy when we walked in at the height of dinner time. Bar/Lounge on one side and table service on the other. The decor seemed to be this cutesy pink mix of hip and minimalist. I appreciated the fact that the restaurant still offered their regular menu in addition to the Dine Out menu, though we were definitely interested in trying the latter. And now, the food choices! He picked the Singaporean Prawn Toast, Mushroom Ravioli, and London Fog Creme Brulee. I opted for the Potato Leek Soup, Miso Maple Salmon and Mixed Berry Pavlova. I have no idea how the Singaporean Prawn Toast tasted, because he inhaled the appetizer before I could think of asking for a bite (so I presume it must have been good). I loved my Potato Leek Soup! Creamy, not overly salty with thin slices of radish and the best square potato in the middle. It felt like I was eating the world's healthiest french fry. I had half of my husband's mushroom ravioli, and it was the right balance of rich and creamy, but I had too small of a portion to really sample the flavours. The chef did a really good job in cooking the salmon...it melted in the mouth! The salmon, bok choy veggies and rice gnocchi sat in a little pool of soy sauce/ginger medley and if I had to be picky, I would say the little puddle made the dish just a touch too salty by the time I got to the bottom. (On the other hand, my salt-loving husband thought the dish was spectacular). Then, the adventure of dessert! The London Fog Creme Brulee tasted exactly as it sounds. It was delicious, but I'm a fan of the plain 'ole Creme Brulee but it was a nice twist on a classic dessert. What I didn't expect was the adventure in trying to eat the Berry Pavlova. The vanilla gelato and whip cream and strawberries were delicious. The blackberry compote at the bottom was very...strong. Halfway through eating the blackberries, I swore they must have soaked them in some sort of liquor, while my husband swore they were just...tart. After Googling Pavlova and being reassured it was similar to meringue pie with a crisp crust and light interior, I could only laugh as the two of us (literally) hacked at the pavlova with our daggers-i-mean-spoons! The crust was crisp, but somehow the interior had the same consistency as sticky stale bread. I couldn't even chew the dessert properly because it would get stuck to my teeth and it would take forever to dislodge without resorting to using my fingers. If someone comes back and tells me that is what a Pavlova is supposed to be like, then I think I will pass on all future pavlova desserts. While the food was spectacular, the wait times, were not. I'm not sure if it this was the standard speed of the kitchen or if the restaurant was short of staff, but the food was slow to appear at our table. The waitress tried her best to keep the water flowing and popped in frequently to check on us, but it felt like we waited a long time in between each course. I paid an extra hour of parking, that was just barely enough to cover the rest of our time there. Takeaways, summarized: Delicious food, good service, lengthy wait times. 1 Hour free parking but given the wait times, may be better to seek out alternative parking. Absolutely love this place. My first time trying it out with a few friends. It's a super cute location. Very clean and the textures of all the designs make it very welcoming too. The staff are quite great and friendly. They were very helpful when we were ordering and checking on us and what not which was great. We chose to go for brunch. Beautiful decor. Beautiful food. I've seen the photos and read the reviews. However, I was still impressed by Ruex. In an area of Surrey that is quickly being populated by new buildings and construction for higher density living, Ruex finds itself to be the flower amongst many weeds. The area isn't known for fancy plates and things like deep fried capers on their smoked salmon eggs benedict, but it works! They are busy. Reservations are necessary. I can only speak to their brunch service, but the place was packed. I felt underdressed in my ballcap with all these folks dressed to the nines to eat avocado toast. There is clearly a market for this in the area and they've got it cornered. So how's the food? Really freakin' good. I really enjoyed my smoked salmon eggs benny. (Can I call it that? I feel like this place is so fancy that shortening the name of the dish is a disservice.) The poached eggs were served perfectly soft and the portion of smoked salmon was bang on. Now here is where I have a bit of a problem. I get that prices of ingredients have gone up. I accept that. However, I got an iced tea. It was five bucks. Maybe it was made using hand-squeezed tea leaves which were imported from the shady side of Mount Kilimanjaro or something. I dunno... It just seemed a little much. This restaurant has quite the hype awhile ago. I finally was able to try this restaurant during a birthday dinner. The entree I ordered was just average at best. I ordered the rose tagliatelle with steak bites. The pasta was al dente. The steak bites were alright. I found the sauce to taste more tomato than rose. I have had better pasta elsewhere so I think I should have ordered a different item. The food presentation was nice. The ambiance is modern. It was very lively, loud and packed with people. Even the restrooms had music blasting away. I personally am not a fan of the restroom music. There was no quiet space in the restaurant. Some people might enjoy this kind of restaurant action. I was on a little walk with my fiancée to Surrey Nature Park when we stumbled across this cafe. I had walked by and said, we should come here after our walk. Fast forward one hour and we found ourselves at the doorsteps of ruex cafe. I was pleasantly greeted by the front staff who the guided us to our table. Before I ordered, I decided to use the washrooms. All I can say is that the washrooms were modern and nice. Returning to my table, we decided to order a mocha, Americano and the French toast. The coffees came out and we thought the mocha was amazing. By far a great drink. The Americano was good too, but a little strong for my liking. The French toast was next on our list. It was unique. I was honestly surprised by the shape of it. I took a knife and sliced it down the middle, which revealed the gooey, doughy interior. The hard exterior contrasted the soft interior. A nice balance of textures which was delicious. I would like to try something other than peanut butter in this format. Really cute brunch location for the weekend and weekdays! The cocktails were innovative and delicious, and my friend appreciated that they also offer virgin versions as she is pregnant. I'm taking a star because the service was quite slow. My friends and I had a lot to catch up on, so we passed time, but I think it took about 15-20 minutes for the server to come back to take our order, and it was not busy in the restaurant. So my friend was dying to bring me here so we made a reso for brunch and went around noon. It is aesthetically pleasing. It was quaint and cozy on a rainy day. My food was good. I wasn't really fond of the biscuit that came with my meal as it was a bit tough, but the rest was good. My item was on a special side menu. The Bischoff french toast was amazing. I would definitely get that again if I came back. Many of the friends who joined us also liked their dishes. They had ordered the udon carbanera, eggplant omlette and tostadas eggs benedict. The service was good. Our waitress was nice and polite. The drinks were fine, but over priced. The mimosa spritz I had was ok but felt like it barely had any champagne in it. They will give you a regular mimosa if you ask for one, but it is not on the menu. This was way better than my first drink. Overall I was pleased but this location is far, and I don't love it enough to come back unless I'm in the area. That's just me. If you live in the area, definitely check it out. Love this unique restaurant with a Melbourne, Australia inspired menu. Have been five times (brunch, lunch & dinner) and everything was delicious. My favourite is their steak with the insanely delicious potato rosti (the shrimp is a great addition). Nice selection for all tastes, excellent specialty drinks and incredible dessert. Do yourself a favour and try the Hannah Banana. The summer special is back now, fish & chips with a light and flavourful batter and their legendary chicken salt fries. read more

I first saw this place popped up on my IG and then read some consistent good reviews, but too many times expectations led to disappointments. Nevertheless, first choice was dim sum but the only dim sum place opened at 9 was Neptune so decided to come by this place and check it out to see if it lives up to its hype. This place is located in the new King George skytrain plaza, where the new Save on Food is. It is best to park in the plaza's underground parking (the sign said, 1 hour free parking each month, really?? 1 hour free parking a month, thank goodness I don't have such brilliant minds working for me). Finding this place can be a bit confusing but the restaurant is located on the side of the plaza which is right on Fraser Hwy. When we walked in, we were casually greeted and directed to seat at a table on the bar section, not my favourite choice (I never prefer to seat by the bar). With a quick glance, the restaurant had that little modern feel but other then that, it looked pretty basic?? What's all the fuzz about? Maybe I was in the bar section and didn't get to see other part of the place and missing something? Anyways here were the food we ordered; 1. steak and EGGS. The name pretty much speaks for itself BUT wait, I forgot to read the fine prints! When the steak arrived, it was just the steak and they forgot the egg. I had to wave down the waitress and 10mins later came back with 1 EGG sunny side up!?!? Hmmm.. only 1 egg and didn't ask me how I want my egg. So much for its menu name, "steak and EGGS". For $32, this item failed miserably; a 6oz sirloin steak (slightly over cooked a bit tough) with 1 fried egg and a bit of garnishing. Premium price for sub par quality, failed! I still can't get over the 1 egg thing... reminds me of a Vietnamese steak and egg dish? 2. Smoke salmon eggs Benedict. The smoked salmons were fresh and were of generous portion, the eggs were done nicely, the house made biscuit needed a little bit more work cause it was tasteless, and the herbed goat cheese were wayyyy too much. This could be a beautiful dish if the house made biscuit refined itself a bit and soften on the overly crowded amount of goat cheese that totally overpowered the nice taste of the smoked salmon and eggs. 3. Mango hotcakes. The texture and the taste of the hotcakes were surprisingly very good. I have to say one of the best hotcakes I had in a long time. What happened!?!? I read the restaurant's mission statement on its website and its online reviews, but everything that were so fantastically said were absent during my experience. First of all, we were the first people walked in at 930am and no other customers were inside or out, why seated us by the bar section and not the dining section where the restaurant spent the investment on its decor? The hotcakes were surprisingly good and probably one of the best I have eaten in a long time but the rest of the food were sub par at best, I have no problem with the price but at least match them with the quality. And took awhile for the food to come and came out all the same time, the poor hotcakes could have waited a bit. As for the service, it was okay at the beginning but slowly turned to non existent when we left, nobody was around besides the bartender, no bye no come again or whatsoever. I guess 18% tip wasn't good? (Btw I always tip on the total amount of the bill not the subtotal so I was tipping for the freaking taxes all the time, correct tipping is tipping on the subtotal. That means I am always over tipping the amount) Overall, I was disappointed because this place just didn't deliver; in terms of service and its food quality. I strongly believe for this place to survive its first year or so, it really have to up its game. A couple of good online reviews here and there are good but the mouth to mouth recommendation and repeat customers are much more powerful.
