We are always looking for new speakeasies, Tiki, bars, and other interesting bars to explore. I always search on Yelp and Google for new places, and somehow Ruin Bar has eluded us for years until now. Ruin Bar is located in The Lab which is a small outdoor mall area in Costa Mesa which has a variety of small shops and places to get food and drink. The parking lot is actually pretty big, but has a reputation for always being full. We arrived at 5:30pm on a Thursday evening and got one of the last few available spaces, so I can only imagine what it is like later in the evening and on weekends. I wouldn't quite say it is a speakeasy, but it has many speakeasy vibes. The location is not 100% plainly identified and we had to ask the host at an adjacent restaurant where it was. When I try to think of how to describe it, I think this is the kind of place you would find in a postapocalyptic world. A small abandoned looking space obscured by overgrown vegetation and filled with a random collection of knick-knacks inside and out. It has the greatest vibe and totally works. There is a small outdoor patio that makes you feel like you're deep in the woods. The seating and tables are an interesting collection of totally different things. When you walk inside, it is almost like entering a museum. There is so much to see, so many things on the walls, things above, and different small seating areas. We had an early dinner at one of the restaurants here at The Lab and arrived at Ruin Bar around 6pm so it wasn't very busy yet. This worked much to our advantage, as I think we got the best seats in the house inside the ski tram. It is definitely the most intimate place to sit with four small seats inside, a very small wood table on the side which can hold a few drinks, stringy curtains, and lights above which rotate colors when it starts to get dark outside. There was some great music from the 70's and 80's being played. To get drinks, go to the bar at the back and place your order. The bartender(s) will make them right next to where you order, and call out your drink when it is ready. I started out with the Halo Halo which is a play on a popular Filipino cold desert. It comes in a large schooner glass and has a great purple color. You can taste the macadamia, coconut, and ube flavors with the rum there nicely in the background. It also has some creaminess from the oat milk. It comes with a spoon and is topped with has a variety of sweet items including fruity pebbles, two cherries, two sour watermelon slices, a papaya slice, coconut flakes, and I think the other topping was a date paste of some sort. This adult milkshake-like cocktail is definitely unique! My girlfriend started with An Incan Ruin, which had a nice red color and was garnished with a lit piece of Palo Santo wood of that had a nice aroma. It was well balanced and had some complexity. To start the second round, I ordered the Yesterday's Feelings drink which is served in a blood bag with a straw. It was a nice light lemony vodka drink, and there was a slice of kiwi fruit in the bag. Her second drink was the Love In Drunk which was a nice pink drink with a cucumber garnish. It was also a nice light vodka drink, and the grapefruit and guava flavors were there nicely in the background. It also had a little fizz. We decided to share one last drink and ordered the Estoy Enamorado. I usually don't like the strong smokiness of Mezcal, but some places are doing a great job of toning that down and this one is an amazing cocktail. The mint leaf garnish starts you off with a great aroma. The orange sherbert does an excellent job of adding a nice light orange flavor and some creaminess. Combine that with the coconut cream and the smokiness of the Mezcal is toned down to the absolute perfect level. There's also a little spiciness from the Ancho Reyes Chile liqueur. This cocktail is one of the best I've had in a while, and I can't wait to have another one soon. Kim and Jess were excellent bartenders and so friendly. They were totally up for chit-chat since we got there early and it wasn't super busy yet. If you have never been here, definitely add Ruin Bar to the top of your list of places to visit.
Ruin was a cool vibe, very limited seating and a small space but fun decor and drinks. Average price wasn't too far off a normal bar and I especially liked the various types of moscow mules. Both the Angeleno and the Italian were a fun twist on the classic drink. Would come back but be prepared to stand and probably not great with a huge group.
What can I say...? This place was evaaahhhh--reee--thing we wanted and more. Visiting from AZ and we try to make it a point to try new speakeasy bars and this bar was everything. We came on a Friday when they opened at 2 and had the bar to ourselves for awhile. Highly recommend that if you have never been here. It's smaller than I thought it would be based on reviews and photos but it's such a vibe in here. My fiancée is a photographer and we had a field day shooting in here. The bartender was amazing. Amazing with recommendations and even suggestions for other locations in different cities. Every cocktail we had was delicious and very balanced. It was a hot day out and this hit the spot!
Stopped by while waiting for a dinner reservation nearby and was happy to come across this cute, quirky spot. The ambiance is playful and unique with a cozy and intimate feel despite the small space. Ordered the Baby One More Thyme and Estoy Enamorado which were both delicious and well-balanced. Worth a visit if you're in the area.
've been to Rune Bar countless times, and it never disappoints. I absolutely love their cocktails and the beautiful design -- it's truly one of the most unique bars in Costa Mesa and all of Orange County. Whether you're sitting inside or out, the vibe is always amazing. The bartenders are fantastic, and it's the perfect spot to enjoy great drinks and even better company. Such a gem!
Fun little spot! Would definitely swing by again. You just go in and order your drinks and find your own seat. They whip up the drinks super fast! Came on a Saturday afternoon and was such a cozy area to sit outdoors and enjoy drinks with friends :) Tucked in the corner with a vintage, maximalist, whimsical vibe. I got the bees knees and the estoy enamorado and both were a tiny bit sweet for me but still really good!
A unique and vibrant spot offering a diverse selection of drinks, from creative new mixes to timeless classics, plus both wine and beer list. We were warmly welcomed and the fun began the moment we placed our order and watched our drinks being beautifully crafted with care and flair. Both the indoor and outdoor seating areas are enchanting, creating the perfect setting for creativity, connection, and good vibes all around. I was having such a wonderful time, I forgot I was in the middle of OC on a Sunday night. I'll be back to be be transported!
Ruin Bar is a small, hipster-y, speakeasy bar located beside Habana. Seating is cute limited and it's got some funky seating outside. The drinks are tasty and strong. We liked the cocktail Prom Date. Workers are super hipster. Inside they are playing Shrek on the television. I think I've said everything that needs to be said here.
Ruin Bar is located at The Lab in Costa Mesa next to Habana. The entrance is directly to the left of the main entrance at Habana but because it all kind of looks the same, you might miss it like we did. They have indoor and outdoor seating, but there isn't much throughout and might be standing room only if it gets really busy. We ordered the espresso martini ($19) and the paloma ($17). The espresso martini was very cold (a positive) and was really good! The paloma was also refreshing and the sparking grapefruit soda really accentuated the grapefruit flavors in the drink. We ordered at the counter and they made our drinks while we waited. When we went there was only one person making all the cocktails which was very impressive given there was a long line and we didn't wait too long for ours.
omg what a FUN and vibe speakeasy/bar (sorry don't know the difference lol) my friends came here on a friday night and it was busy!!!! it's part of the anti-lab mall so parking may be difficult depending on the time you go. the space is pretty small so finding a table may be difficult and it gets crowded when trying to order drinks. other than that, LOVED the decor of the place its such a cozy and cool vibe with a dj playing music on the side. they had cool projections of different music videos or movies and had some anime shows playing. the bartenders were super friendly and pretty quick in making the drinks! if you order any of their canned drinks, they do pour it out into a glass which was nice! price of drinks were average/what you kinda expect with a range ~$18-25 (very rough estimate btw) overall, would come again with friends and would recommend to go after dinner if you're in the area!

Came here on a Friday night to check it out and it was packed in there. The interior of the bar itself is really small and gets hot quickly especially with the amount of people in there. It was nicely decorated in there and looked cool. We waited in line which was a little long and I ended up getting an Espresso Martini. When I tell you this is the best espresso martini I've ever had, I mean it. I wish I got the bartender's name to shout him out but he SHOOK that mixer and mixed the drink incredibly well. He scorched an orange slice and set it on top of the foam and my life was changed. The pictures don't do it justice but not only did it look good, it tasted amazing. It had a nice roasted taste with a little bit of sweetness. We sat in the outdoor seating which was actually really cute with little string lights. Cool place! read more

Went for the first time with some friends over the weekend. Interior is small but has a cool retro vibe. Had the Island Mule and it was good. The patio area is nice and enclosed. Will have to site out there at night as they had a lot of cool hanging lights. read more
This is located in the LAB anti-mall by Habanas. They have both an interior and exterior seating, though the inside is small. Came for Halloween and it was empty but for new years eve it was PACKED. The drinks are aesthetically pleasing and the bartenders suggest drinks based on preference! read more

Wow! This bar is one of a kind. The halo halo is a CRAZY drink in the best way possible. Staff is super nice and the vibes inside the bar are immaculate. Highly recommend if you're looking for a really fun spot for date night. read more
Felt like a speakeasy vibe. It was a bit difficult to find but it's tucked away hidden next to Havanas. Really cool bar with decor everywhere. The drinks were all crafted very well, especially loved the Jacob. It was strong enough to taste the bourbon, not too sweet, and hint of tart. Go check this place out! read more
One of my favorite bars to chill at with friends at night. The drinks are well crafted. Good flavor and still being nice and strong! The vibe is definitely chill and quiet so that is what you should expect when coming here. I love the antique decor they have here which adds to its charm. Great craft cocktails located at The Lab in Costa Mesa. Prices are higher, but it's ok because the drinks are stiff. Inside is where you place your drink order. The decor inside is very eclectic. We came here after singing Karaoke at Shout for an hour...they didn't have alcohol there so we decided to go to the a bar to get a drink to end the night celebrating my daughter's 24th birthday! What a great decision, this bar was special, never seen anything like this before, such a cool vibe and what was even more amazing was our bartender, our tita who closed out our night and made it memorable, she played a bday song in the background and brought us all a shot! Wow! I will never forget this night! Incredible atmosphere with even more incredible people. Definitely coming back when I come back to town! Go check it out! You won't be disappointed! We finally made it here (fortunate to find a space in the limited parking lot on a Saturday night)! Small-and-intimate space(s); very eclectic decor -- both inside and outside; creative cocktail menus; and fun, friendly, energetic, and welcoming bartenders! Orders are placed and picked up at the bar. Our cocktails were attractive in presentation and tasty and delightfully strong. Easily my FAVORITE bar ever!! I've always been a complete wuss when it comes to alcoholic beverages but I LOVE being drunk so you can see the conundrum I'm in.. however I decided to try this bar out on a whim after seeing just downright cool, amazing, otherworldly, and unique it looked and it was one of the best decisions of my life. I got Love in Drunk and Estoy Enamorado and both were SO GOOD and got me sufficiently drunk! Love in drunk was light and refreshing but Estoy Enamorado was on a whole other freakin level.. GOOD GOD I've never had a more enjoyable drink than that.. I'm a big fan of piña colada flavors and this was like that but with a way more unique and complex flavor profile. Each sip finished with a slight spicy chili smoky taste that was such a GENIUS choice!! Omg I had NO issues downing both drinks and that is saying A LOT if you know how bad I am with the taste of alcohol. As for the decor of the bar, it was like nothing I've ever seen before. It was SO freakin cool and unique and didn't feel too uppity or hipster like a lot of these artisanal drink places are. Looks like the repurposed/updycled a lot of things (which I love!). They also have a rly cool outdoor section as well. The staff were nice and laid back. Loved watching the bartender work his magic. Whole vibe was laid back and chill with unique art with the most amazing, unique delicious drinks you can possibly think of. Yes they are on the more expensive side but f***, def worth it! Small trendy bar! The decor is very picturesque, but the establishment is so so small. It's hard to find anywhere to sit, and the music is blasting. The drinks are amazing but very expensive!! For that price I would hope to have more seating to enjoy them. The bartenders were nice but very slow.. guess that's fine for a small place? There was only one bartender. Great spot to grab a drink with friends in the Lab. Parking......good luck but that night I had a little and stopped by here with friend. There was a DJ and the vibe was cool. Lots of cozy spots to find right outside under a tree. Everyone was super cool and the decor of the place was amazing. The drink selection was pricy however worth it. Their cocktails were great. I usually stick with whiskey but when in Rome. We got the Penicillin which was a scotch based drink. The bar tender did an excellent job on it and I was pretty impressed. Not a place for larger parties unless it's not in a prime hour. But definitely worth checking out. read more

Loved this bar! Very dark and moody, cat motifs everywhere, it was definitely my type of atmosphere. All the seating options were unique and fun, the bartenders were friendly. I spent around 4 hours here on a Saturday night and got 3 drinks. We dropped a glass on accident and felt terrible because they were so busy but the bartender cleaned it up so fast. There's security in this area as well. Great place to drink with friends! read more

My husband and I have been trying to go to Ruin Bar for awhile, but it's always insanely packed. As other reviewers have stated, Ruin Bar is very intimate and not for larger groups. The seating that they do have is really intended for groups of 2-4. If you come during the weekend, expect to wait in line and because their drinks are unique, they can take awhile to make. Rest assured that the drinks are worth the wait! On a Friday night, we waited about 10 minutes to order. I ordered the espresso martini because I'm obsessed with them right now and it did not disappoint. It wasn't overly sweet and the foam on top was perfection. They had a DJ playing all the hits and we were still able to hear each other talking without screaming at each other. Also, the decor is amazing. read more
This is a perfect fit for a bar inside the Anti-mall. Very unique and interesting decorations all around. While it is quite small, it is perfect for an intimate or quality outing with a small group. It didn't take too long to get our drinks but it is still a longer wait when busy as this isn't a dive bar pumping out [insert choice of liquor] with soda. Don't expect to get many drinks here as your bill will quickly add up. The presentation as well as how good the drinks really fits the ambiance and justifies the high price and wait time. read more

Gotta love Ruin Bar!! This is one of my favorite go-to bars and the cutest speakeasy around. The decor is charming and eclectic - imagine your cat-crazed grandmother opened a tiki bar in her house. My forever favorite cocktail here is Love in Drunk, it's tart, refreshing, and so delicious that it's worth every penny. An Incan Ruin is a unique cocktail that delivers on the drama with a lit piece of Palo Santo as garnish. Sometimes the bar has a small line but nothing wild. I love my visits here while catching up with friends, Ruin Bar offers a unique and moody vibe that is hard to find elsewhere! read more

We came to this bar at 1am on a Saturday night. It was a chill, small, and eclectic spot playing hip hop, a nice place to go to for a night cap. We arrived and waiting in a line to order drinks, since there was only one bartender working that night. We got the dandy and fk blenders, and went outside to sit in what I think was one of those old car rides you see outside bargain supermarkets. The drinks both were good in their own ways: the dandy was strong and boozy, the f**k blenders was very balanced and fruity. Like most of the crowd there, we were just vibing to the music. Ruin bar is one of my all time favorite bars in Costa mesa. Tucked away behind a shrubbery wall is the most eclectic, little bar I've ever been to. The drinks are familiar but feel new, and the decor is simply amazing. Everytime I go in, I always find myself discovering something new I hadn't noticed before. There is seating almost everywhere. Things that look like simple decoration also serve as seating most of the time. This can't really hold very many people, but if you're looking for a quiet intimate place to have a drink or two, Ruin bar is it! read more
The Ruin Bar is small. The drink menu is unique and the decor is pretty cool. This is not a place for large groups and the drinks do take a bit of time to make. We came here midweek and we were pretty much the only people in the place, but that was fine with us. We had some really nice cocktails and took some super social media worthy photos. Overall this is a nice spot for some day drinking and there are some nice food options at The Lab as well. read more

I got the drunk in love or something like that... wish the menu was on the site but this drink was 10/10 and so yummy! Cute little bar in the lab. Bartender was nice and made a great margarita. Keep in mind this place is pretty small with limited seating. My sister and I went here for HH on Sunday before a concert at Segerstrom Hall. They have HH all day on Sunday, I got my margarita for $10 and I believe it's $7 for draft beer and house wine. They got a fire playlist. It was quite the vibe! I would definitely come back again to try some of their signature cocktails. read more
