This wine bar is cute, hip, and chic! I'm so happy we discovered what a neat place this is to hang out and grab a drink. The parking lot situation can be confusing but thankfully there is ample parking right across the street. Semi Tropic wines is located on an unassuming street but is very beautiful and cool inside. They also have a spacious patio for outdoor seating. I had a sparking wine that was juicy, slightly sweet, and refreshing. There were limited wines options this night but I think that's partly because the menu was "curated." Lots of non-alcoholic options which was a pleasant surprise. Menu is on the pricier side. This night we came because they were hosting the food pop up "Three Pigs" which offered a variety of yakitori skewers. We ordered one of everything and my favorites were the beef, chicken thigh, and cucumber salad. I'd love to come back and try Semi Tropic's house menu, but if they keep up a steady rotation of cool pop ups like this I think that would be an amazing idea too! I'm looking forward to their future events. We arrived early in the night (about 5:30pm) so there weren't many people. By the time we left closer to 7pm. the line to order at the bar was considerably longer and the place was packed. They host live jazz Thursdays and Fridays which I would definitely come back to enjoy for longer! I went on a Thursday night around 615 for jazz. We got there and had to wait in a line to order wine and food. They don't serve you here and you just order and then sit down. We waited about 10 minutes and there's no menu circulating so you are just standing there not knowing what they have. When we got to the counter to order, there were only five wines to choose from. I was a bit surprised since this is a wine bar. There's also only five food options and nothing really sounded great to me. On their website, they listed charcuterie and a lot more wines, but that was not what was offered. The inside is really cute. But the outside is rundown. The patio looks pretty shabby and that's where the jazz musicians play. There's no heat lamps or really a vibe out there. But the music was fantastic! read more

Posse is now the resident food pop up and it is INCREDIBLE. I've learned the hard way to go earlier to order food and it's so worth it. We've now tried the Wednesday wine flight deal (I think 3 pours for $15) which is a great deal and they have live jazz on thursdays and Friday nights!! Love this place. We tried the fingerlings and the sorbets. I liked the sorbets, but probably would not get the fingerlings again because it's something that can be made at home. The staff that was taking orders was not the friendliest and may have forgotten our sorbets but the other girl that was going around tables was very friendly. Seating is limited but indoor seating seems more comfy (not by much) than outdoor seating which is the epitome of broke college student patio furniture... Highly recommend coming for the live music!! Great selection of wines and they also offer wine tastings in a private room which I would like to do next time! We ordered the gouda cheese board and added slices of coppa, it came with bread which was nice. We also ordered the beans which tasted okay but I don't think I'd order again. My friend and I found this place on TikTok because we saw someone posted that there was jazz and charcuterie boards on Saturdays so we were bummed when we walked in on a Saturday evening and there was neither jazz or charcuterie boards. It's not the restaurants fault by any means but that was quite a bummer since the drive was quite long to get there. The girl who greeted us was not very friendly and told us to take a seat and order at the bar which was confusing since we saw other tables with servers. I've been wanting to check out Semi Tropic for a while! We came on a Friday night which meant difficult to find parking in their tiny lot, but no worries. We made it in. :) We ordered two glasses of their "disco wine" which the server described as their nicer wine. The price on the menu was listed as market price .... We didn't ask details, just paid. The total for two glasses came out to $45.99!!!! I later saw that included a 20% gratuity for pouring wine that we weren't informed of before ordering sadly :/ and tax. We enjoyed the wine. What a gem! Right off the bat, amazingly friendly service. Everyone was so friendly with me and my dog, we both fell in love right away haha. I had their Grenache Blanc and it was deliciousssss! Orange County is very limited when it comes to natural wine bars, making this location a sweet snob's haven. I was greeted by Haley who was incredibly helpful and welcoming. She was great at making suggestions and I thoroughly enjoyed the house orange wine I had that is served on tap. It was delicious. Thank you Haley for elevating my experience! I was able to browse the bottle shop and took home a German orange wine that they also sell by the glass that is delicious. The location is a great spot nestled between two other bars. I was really looking forward to checking this place out, but the experience was a major letdown. Right off the bat, we were asked to pay a $5 entry fee charge without being told what it was for. It wasn't until after we handed over the money that we found out it was going toward a political cause. Regardless of where you stand, that kind of lack of transparency is completely unprofessional -- especially in a hospitality setting. Then came the wine. I ordered just one glass, and with tip, the total came out to $20. For that price, you'd expect at least a proper glass and a more refined experience. Instead, the wine was served in a plastic cup, which honestly felt like a joke -- especially at a place calling itself a wine bar. The plastic cup was the straw that broke the camel's back. We heard that this place had just opened in Costa Mesa a few days ago and we wanted to check it out. Sadly, very disappointed. 1. Service: Very rude, not friendly or welcoming. As soon as we entered the bar, the bartender waved us in. He did not really tell us about the wine bar, just had us pick one wine we usually drink and then gave us a glass of wine. Then, he had filled three glasses, as my friend was about to pay he accidentally knocked over the glass of wine onto her pants. He cleaned it up, but repoured the glass of wine and still charged her for it! Poor service. 2. Ambience : Love the retro vibe, well decorated. Tables are very limited! Because of social distancing only about, 2-3 parties can sit outside, rest outside. 3. Wine & Food: Wine selection is wide. No complaints on this! Currently the restaurant is not open, only the bar and therefore, the only couple of appetizers are available. We got the charcuterie board, and cheese - they didn't give us plates, and we had to ask for them. Semi-Tropic is natural wine shop and bar and EXACTLY what Costa Mesa needed! Note: only the wine shop is open right now, the bar/restaurant will be opening in the next few weeks. The interior is absolutely beautiful. The selection is wonderful. The staff is so very helpful and knowledgable. I can't wait to become a regular. Tip: The shop hours are currently 12-6pm. I came here with a friend to watch one of our friends perform live music. Parking is limited behind this place so I parked across the street. My friend and I split their goat cheese and bread plate. It was pretty good. I especially liked the oil with the goat cheese. We had a nice time watching our friend perform outside. We did ask for more bread for our cheese later and the service was a little slow, but we eventually got more bread for a small fee. Semi Tropic Wines is quickly becoming a usual Wednesday night plan for my friend group. There are so many things to love about this place where to begin! To start, the wine here is incredible. They serve natural wines, which will be free of additives, chemicals, pesticides, etc. And they also serve wine from all over the world. Here you won't find generic wine that you might find in most stores, from very known wine producing regions. You will find wines from all over the world anywhere from major producing business to small mom and pop wine owners. The wine can be more pricey than your usual bottle, but you are paying for the best quality wine! So worth it in my opinion. Secondly, the people that work here are such a delight! We absolutely love coming in and learning about all the different wines. On wednesdays they do wine tasting in the wine tasting room with Madison, and that girl knows her wine! What's fun is the tasting is different every week, but will feature the same winery/region in one evening. So you will really get to explore the brand. She also does her research so you really know the process of how the wine was created. Lastly, the food is crazy good. They have small bites that are phenomenal and will occasionally have pop up foods that will come on select nights. They also have Jazz thursdays and falafel nights. I'd follow them on Instagram to see what events/pop ups were happening for the week for planning when you'd like to come in. Overall this place is such a hidden gem.
