We love Deep Ellum. It's even cooler when the weather is nice and you can people watch. Unfortunately it was in the high 50s and although they have a great patio we elected to dine inside. A very nice man greeted us and told us to sit anywhere. Choices being high top tables in the bar area or the bar itself. High top table it was. We did switch out the chairs to ones with backs for more comfort. Some of the chairs had mexican blankets which I thought was a cool touch. My only minor complaint is the chairs were very uncomfortable. My hips hurt from not having a place to rest my feet. I have a 36" inseam but the place to lean my foot was just too far away. The waiter was great and let me point to a picture of a drink that I wanted from other yelpers. It was green and coconutty and pineapply and really pretty. I ordered the ceviche, the roasted chayote salad. My husband got the pozole rojo. The ceviche was very fresh and the chips were good. The roasted chayote was ok. I liked it but I dont think I would order it again. This place is great. It's hot a super vibe and a back room with a stage and signs on the wall saying they host movie nights. How cool is that. Ruins is such an incredible spot. I come here after work all the time and never leave disappointed. The drinks are unique and contain tons of different elements. The food from the tacos to the big plates are all very scrumptious. Staff are amazingly nice and attentive. Get the Prawn Star or any of their tacos. So extremely good. read more

Cool venue, but not my personal cup of tea! Inside decor has a creepy Aztec vibe which a lot of people love. Cocktails are a little expensive (expect to spending around $15 a pop) for a selection that I wasn't crazy about. This bar is huge on authentic Mexican flavors. If you are a fan of tequila, spice, & mezcal you will probably be a huge fan. I am more of a fruity gin drinker so I stuck to a traditional marg. Yo, we just had the best Mexican candy shot from Ruins! My buddy was visiting Texas for the first time and wanted to give him something unique. The bartender made sure they were very spicy and the mezcal had a nice finishing touch. We followed up with ranch waters and really enjoyed the Ruin vibes. read more

My first experience at Ruins was a bit sad given the fact that I ordered a Cosmo and was handed a Lemon Drop Martini with cranberry juice in it. For those of you who haven't watched Sex and the City, that is not how you make a Cosmo. My second experience at Ruins was much more pleasant. I got the Prawn Star Dori Locos and the passionfruit margarita. Both were incredibly delicious, so delicious that I am violently craving those Dori Locos right now as I write this. Elotes and al precipicio quesadilla were chefs kiss. Very much enjoyed those. Tacos were a miss for us. We were a little disappointed to learn that they can't make substitutions. Asked to have chicken in the al precipicio quesadilla instead of the included pork due to a dietary preference of another guest. They chose to skip an entree because of this and only ate chips and salsa instead. Nice vibe for a night out. Service was lack luster. Server seemed to not know the menu. She wasn't able to clearly answer our questions and obviously wasn't going to ask the kitchen or a co worker for help. read more

Hands down... the best Mexican cuisine we had in Deep Ellum! Stumbled in here for some tacos after a 24 hour nightmare drive from Minnesota and a night of bar hopping. It was pretty full on a Monday night, but the staff was on top of it! I ordered a few Carnitas Jabali (wild boar tacos) and some Elote. The boar was indeed "braised to perfection" with a nice heat and developed flavor. The elote was creamy and unforgettable. We ended up going back the next night just to drink at the bar. Ruins opened up recently where the Luscher's hot dogs used to be. It looks completely different inside though with dark Latin folk artwork and decor. Mezcal is their bar's specialty and they have an entire wall of it and several creative mezcal-based cocktails. Behind the sliding doors in the back, they have a cool live music space and a second bar. "From Oaxaca with love" appetizer has fried pork skin, oaxacan cheese, smashed avocado, chorizo, and Chapulines (toasted grasshoppers). There were out of grasshoppers the day I had it but everything else was tasty and the string cheese was da bomb. The "Holy Cow" soup was awesome. The rich broth was choke-full of beefy goodness. Be sure to squeeze the lime into it. I typically order pastor, lengua, and barbacoa whenever I have tacos but for some reason, I was compelled to try the Chicken Tinga taco. I'm glad I did because it's the best chicken taco I've had anywhere. The adobo sauce is flavorful and keeps the chicken moist. And the avocado and crema are the perfect companions. I even appreciated the shredded lettuce garnish as the fiber is much needed in my old age. The pastor taco was good but not exceptional in flavor. I thought the barbacoa (cabeza) taco was better. The fat-rich cow's head meat was juicy and tender offset by the salsa verde and lime. 4.5-stars for the atmosphere, very good food, and live music! read more

Cool spot with a very distinct vibe that's not for everybody, and that's what I like! We came here to check it out after looking for cool bars/spots on Yelp and we weren't disappointed! It's located in the Deep Ellum stretch so it was great to grab a light dinner and drinks here and then walk around. We sat inside to really enjoy the cool decor - it's like darkly themed Mexican-influenced decor. Loved all the alibrijes and paintings inside! The drinks we ordered were fantastic. I ended up taking the server's recommendation for the passionfruit margarita and it was amazing! Their menu is mostly bar bites, so we ordered the verdecita dorilocos, nopalitos fritos, and a few tacos. Any time I see nopal on the menu I order it because it never lets me down! We really enjoyed all of our food and the dorilocos were a fun food addition to our usual tacos + app + drinks situation. Definitely recommend coming here with friends or your significant other to check out the ambiance and drinks. Stopped by after the place we were originally planning on going closer earlier than posted on their website. It was a bit slow, but it was a Thursday and during COVID. The waitresses were all very helpful and offered suggestions since we'd never been and didn't know what to order from the vast alcohol options. The BF got 4 different tacos and liked all except the Homguito, but also I don't think he realized there wasn't meat on it. I had the Flautotas and was really happy with my choice but I also love shredded chicken. BF has already talked about going back to try other new taco options so I'd say that's a good sign. read more

Found this place on Instagram and not all it's hyped up to be. The chips and guacamole was the only highlight of the visit. But we also ordered snappers tacos (that didn't taste like snapper) and shrimp tacos they were both super spicy and took away from the flavor. The drinks were also good. I'm going to keep it short and simple, these are hands down the best tripa and pastor tacos I've had in deep ellum especially on a night out! The tripa was cooked perfectly and just the right amount of crispiness. The pastor meat had pineapple (the right way of eating pastor) and just SO much flavor. We also shared the dori locos which are basically tortilla chips with your choice of meat and other toppings. We had the barbacoa ones. Everything was great! We also loved the unique decor. 5 stars for our new favorite Mexican restaurant! We loved Ruins and were impressed with the authenticity of the food, ambiance, service, and the live music option on weekends. The kitchen is open until 2 am so it's an awesome option for late night dining and the tacos are to die for. We had guacamole and salsa with chips and the chips were delicious and very crispy. We also had ceviche, a variety of tacos and cajeta ice cream for dessert. We had a feast and the total for everything was not bad! For the quality of food this place is very affordable! Great people watching and super fun location in Deep Ellum. Parking can be a little tough on the weekends but we got lucky and found street parking. We look forward to returning and trying some of their famous cocktails! read more

The service was a bit sparse, there wasn't a lot of customers there and there was like 4 servers but somehow it took us 45min to get a refill on waters and a few minutes longer to order our desert. First of all, I had originally came to Deep Ellum to buy me some tacos from Revolver Taco Lounge, but they were closed yesterday, so since I already paid for parking I started Yelping for other taco places and found Ruins which was within walking distance from where I was at. From all the food pictures on Yelp, the food looked good. Their brunch items look really good, but I wanted El pastor tacos and carne asada, which they don't have carne asada on the menu, bummer. Anywho, I ordered El pastor tacos and their barbacoa tacos. It wasn't bad, but it also didn't send me over the moon with flavor either. Another thing that I didn't like was the tortillas tasted store bought and not homemade like Revolver Taco Lounge. I may come back for their brunch menu next time. I forgot to mention that the waitress was very friendly and attentive. read more

We stopped by after having tacos around the corner at Revolver Taco. We chatted with a local chef that told us we had to stop by and have the el ray torta. This torta had deep fried ribeye, beans, lto, avocado, queso Oaxaca, and pickled jalapenos. We also decided to have a couple coconut margaritas while we waited. We weren't sure what to expect when we were told to try the torta, but we found an amazing cocktail bar with a small concert venue attached. Our server showed us around the concert area and all the local Mexican graffiti art they had. The art was outstanding and the attention to detail was incredible. We went back to our table and our torta showed up. This deep fried ribeye torta hit the spot and checked every box on the way there. It was so good, that we both woke up and wanted anther one the next morning. It was truly outstanding. Our server was also awesome throughout our visit. Overall, we really enjoyed our visit to the Ruins. The torta and cocktails were top notch. I would highly recommend this spot to anyone in the area. read more

I would give this place a 3 but my husband loved it, so I'm giving it a 5, so I'm averaging to a 4. Where we basically disagree is on the food: He loved it and I thought it was ok. The Milanesa was very tasty and probably my favorite dish. Being from South America and knowing what a milanesa is, it was not what I expected but the taste was really good. It has jalapeños, so if you don't like spicy food (like me) order without them because it will feel spicy even after removing them. The chicken Tinga taco was also very good and tasty, a bit spicy as well but tolerable. The ceviche was the dish that really disappointed me. I'm a bit snobbish when it comes to this dish because I love the flavors, and unfortunately this ceviche didn't meet my expectation (and it was recommended by our waitress). It has jalapeños as well which is how they try and give this dish flavor. Definitely needed salt and lime. Eat with the chips to give it a bit of flavor. I have to say, all the servings were pretty big. I also recommend sharing plates. The service was good with friendly staff. There's no hostess so you get to chose where to sit, and there's several options inside and outside. So that part was great! Very chill vibe. They have a good selection of drinks. Mine looked amazing but tasted ok. Be careful when you order a frozen drink and make it on the rocks because they will add $3 more. Our waitress was very kind in removing that from the bill since we weren't aware of that. read more

Decided to check this place out due to the amount of raving Yelp fans. I wasn't too impressed with my entree but I would say that they have a decent selection of Mayan food to select from. They have roasted grasshoppers (which taste like peanuts). Everything is seasoned in an interested seasoning. I ordered a big ass burger and it was pretty much enough to share with my other friends. I thought my burger was pretty good but the tacos weren't. The tacos are priced per taco and I believe they were $4 each. They were dry and not good. I probably will not go back but it is a cool spot if you're looking to try different foods. read more
