The decor in this place is wild. If ever there's a moment of silence in your group, look at the decor and the conversation erupts all over again. Dark and a bit tripy in all the right ways of course. The cocktail menu is very innovative, so be daring and try new things...... says the guy who got a Tito's, water and a splash of cranberry. I have had multiple cocktails on the list and I haven't sent one back. Or waiter was very attentive and kept an eye on us, paced everything very well so we didn't feel rushed. Stopped by for a couple of beers. I'm a bit surprised because it's a lovely spot, very nicely decorated, tons of menu variety, but it was rather empty/quiet inside. This can be a good or a bad thing depending on what you want from your night out. For us, it was a great respite in between a live music bar and a very noisy nightclub. The only thing I have to dock a star for is the bathroom stall lock in the men's room did not lock properly, leaving my friend no privacy when he had to pull trig. read more

This was my second visit to Ruins. The first time for me was a major disappointment with both my food and our server. This time, my wife enjoyed her food, but like me, we were unable to get a refill of our water glasses. But we decided to give the restaurant a second chance by the urging from my wife. This was almost a complete repeat of my first visit. Here is why I will veto returning a third time. Ambiance is fine for esthetic looks. But was seated next to two tables of big groups who were either trying to yell over the piped in music or had calls on their cells where they used the speaker function to everyone could hear at yell back at the person on line. There was a question as to which server was assigned to our table, so we were ignored for 15 minutes before we could stop a third server and ask which server was ours. Once we were served, our server didn't reappear again except to drop off the bill, process payment and then leave with a quick thank you. My wife had the ADELITA'S QUESA and enjoyed her meal. I ordered the S.L.P. ENCHILADAS to try something that sounded good. My meal came out about 10 minutes after my wife's order while our server brought out the meals for the table next to us that had 8 customers. When my meal was served, the enchiladas were room temperature and the salsa verde was missing. Because we didn't see our server until she brought the bill, I couldn't point out the two flaws with my meal. I will probably never eat there again since the two times I've been there, my meal was sub par at best and the service person goes AWOL once the food is dropped off. Really enjoyed this place! The ambience was really nice on the patio seating. I didn't get the chance to see the inside of the restaurant because I knew I wanted to eat outside. Our waiter and busboy were both great, down to earth and friendly. Our waitress suggested the painkiller out of my two top choices and it was SO GOOD! I stopped in at Ruins for a drink when I was walking around Deep Ellum with my brother a few weeks ago. It was a weekend afternoon, and they weren't busy yet (but it was getting busy when we left). They have a full menu of drinks and food. (I didn't try food on this visit, but the menu looks great - tacos, flautas, tortas, and more!) My cocktail was a special for Dia de los Muertos, so it's not on the regular menu. And it was great. But the regular menu has a lot of things I'd love to try - creative cocktails, including 9 types of margaritas; scorpion bowls - cocktails that serve 3; lots of beers from Central and South America; wines from Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Spain; and pulque! Great options, great service at the bar, and a great vibes and decor. Definitely a place I'd happily return to and bring friends with next time! read more

I love this place every time I go. Their menu is in like Spanish and it's cool. They usually have some music going on. When I went, they had a performer inside but we were outside. They have a variety of margaritas and unique flavors like guava and jamaica (pronounce HAMAICA) lmbo don't make the same mistake I did. Anyway, their food is pretty good. They have a nacho appetizer. Be aware they're good but a small portion because they come out of a mini chip bag (like the ones that use to be .50 cent).For the price, it could be more and I don't consider it share size. It was Wednesday night after 10pm in the Deep Ellum neighborhood. My friend and I were surprised to see how many spots were already closed by 10pm. Luckily we found Ruins which stays opens later, until Midnight. We were pleased with photos of their beautiful vibrant drinks and we made our way here quickly. We were helped out by Tia and she was the sweetest and most patient person ever. To be honest we already had quite some amounts of drink in us prior, so we were probably annoying. Their menu went digital and the website was annoying to use without any pictures so Tia really helped us out and told us to just tell her what we wanted and she will figure it out for us. We both wanted a vodka base with pretty floral decorations. My friend wanted something purple, and I wanted a different color so it would contrast nicely in a photo so I asked for a pink drink since it was a complimenting color. Tia exceeded what we imagined we wanted out of our drink and brought us variations of the Chilango Vibes ($11/each). The standard version has stoli vodka, mandarina, ginger, citrus and cilantro. She said she played with different syrups to get us the colors we wanted. The drinks were tasty AND PRETTY!! Tia is THE BEST! We are so grateful to have crossed paths with her. This was our last night in town and it was truly a beautiful and sweet ending. My friend and I cheers to our friendship and savored our drinks. This will be one of many adventures we will have to look back on when we are old and grey reminiscing great memories of our youth. read more

This was a surprise but a disappointment too , went on a Thursday night and it was such a vibe but we had the shrimp nachos in a the bag the flavor was bursting but I got hair in my bag and returned it , they fixed it but I will try again . The Orchata cocktail was alright, but it had A LOT of ice. The mole enchilada plate came with 3 enchiladas, they were good but was hoping to get at least one side to go with the enchiladas, like rice. We were seating in the outside seating area, the chairs are so uncomfortable. Service was good. The inside bar looked pretty cool. Ruins is the place to be in Deep Ellum. While all Dallas establishments try to "out-cowboy" each other on the decor front, Ruins chose to go a whole other direction by bringing us back to the Aztec/Mayan era of Meso-America. That combined with their neon sign and dark interior make it one of the coolest aesthetics I've seen in Dallas. Their margarita was my favorite of the three I had in Deep Ellum that afternoon (my girlfriend and I were navigating on our "Margarita passport"), and their house cocktail "Diabolico" I had afterwards was an amazing Mezcal drink and well worth the $13. Service was great too, the bar folks were super nice. read more

If you're in Deep Ellum you definitely need to make a stop at Ruins! Their tacos are really good and so are the margaritas. There's not very many tables inside, the lighting is a bit dim and the music can be loud so if you want a more laidback experience I recommend sitting outside. We seated ourselves and a server was with us shortly and took our drink orders and brought our water while we decided on our food. We ordered the al pastor and brisket tacos, which were very good, super moist and juicy! Not the most expensive tacos I've had but also not the cheapest. read more

Most of the tables are pretty small and all of them are high tops so room on the table for food is very sparse. Their drinks were fantastic and potent. When you walk in you'll pretty much have to seat yourself and somebody will come to the table. The only reason I give four stars is because of the service. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't proactive in the sense that they don't seat you and when you do seat yourself they don't notice you. Drinks were good but they double charged me. They asked for my card twice and the second time I told them they already had they said there was a mistake or something so I gave it to them again thinking they cleared it up but nope they just charged me twice. Mistakes happen if that's what that was (seems more like carelessness if not intentional) but what's even more frustrating is I've tried to call them several times and the phone just rings until eventually you get a message that the phone isn't set up. It's not great business to not have a way for customers to reach you to clear something up. read more

Heck, there is even a paid parking lot next door! Sit wherever you want. Woody quickly brought water and info; we started w drinks and chips ww a choice of 3 different-intensity salsas. The Battala was an unusually twisted absinthe drink, and the Painkiller (frozen) was superb. I want another one! We ordered 4 tacos and 2 orders of refried beans; all were fresh and tasty looking - but the Shrimporizo Taco was too spicy for either of us. Great Mezcal Selection. Not as good as Los Almas further down the road, but still much better any other place in the heart of deep ellum. I like that you can get a half pour. I got the wild boar carnitas, the moronga (blood sausage), the beef belly picadillo. All of them were good, although I will say they were not indistinguishable between each other. While there definitely is a difference, I cant say getting a variety of tacos makes much of a difference here (besides the price and texture). The corn tortillas they came on have a solid corn flavor and taste/feel as if they are made by hand rather than from a mission tortilla bag. The moronga was probably my least favorite due to its much softer texture compared to the rest (but that doesn't mean its bad). The Churro Waffle with cajeta ice cream was divine! Possibly the crispiest waffle I've ever had in the best way possible. the cinnamon sugar is such a nice touch. The cajeta ice cream brings some much needed moisture that never makes the waffle soggy. Don't be deceived in it's size. One person can eat it, but it's better to have two or more split it. You'll be in a food coma like me if you eat all of it on your own. read more

After you go drinking in Deep Ellum, there comes a time when you start looking for fries, greasy foods, and a solid burger. Look no further than Ruins for your late night dining needs! Visited Ruins after getting some drinks, and it was very easy to find. Bring your ID, since they also are a bar. We found open seating in the bar dining area since we were there for food. The servers are super busy, but surprisingly it didn't take too long for a sweet gal to address us and give us some menus. We were both in the mood for some fries and a hefty bite, so we ended up getting tortas. I was excited for the octopus torta aka El Pulpo. It was crispy and fried to perfection, but tougher to detach at times. The fries were on the thin side, like just a tad thicker than shoestring...which aren't my favorite. BUT oh well they still satisfied my fries cravings. The tortas are probably the biggest bang for your buck because you are guaranteed a full belly at the end of things. We also had their margaritas, and you can choose based on flavor. I had the prickly pear on the rocks and it was delicious! Not too sweet, which was what I was afraid the other flavors like mango might be. The ambiance inside is dark...for sure. Think candles and lots of squinting. The music wasn't too loud where we couldn't have a decent conversation, so I highly recommend this place for a date or just hanging with friends. Still a 5 for me! This is such a unique dining experience - a perfect mix of traditional dishes with a twist and then your more exotic choices for the experimental or experienced foodies. I am obsessed with the chicken tinga tacos - crispy shell, perfect size, fantastic crema, and while the chicken is simmered in adobo sauce, it doesn't come too wet/saucy and gives the shredded chicken great flavor! They recently added 2 jumbo flautas to the menu and they are made with the shredded chicken - these were craveworthy good! I highly highly recommend! They offer breakfast dishes including breakfast gorditas everyday 11-3 and the Gordita tortillas are handmade daily! We came by for Labor Day and the bartender was handling several tables inside as well as us on the patio and he was so friendly - never seeming overwhelmed. At the end of our meal he gave us some awesome info about the kitchen, authentic handmade gorditas, house made sauces and background on the earlier days of the restaurant as well. Went here late at night with a friend during the middle of the week, after an event. Was seated quickly since there wasn't much of a crowd. We both ordered tacos, my friend had the Birria tacos which she stated they weren't the best ones & that they were just okay but I on the other hand LOVED the Shrimp and Chorizo + the Al Pasto. The Al Pastor reminded me of my favorite taco place in Houston. ON POINT. The drinks were great too. Definitely going back. This place is kind of weird. I got a Purgatory vibe here--like I wasn't in hell yet, but definitely on the way there. The Spanglish menu was a little confusing at first but the more I reviewed it, the more I appreciated the restaurant's devilish personality. We gazed at the inebriated patrons of Dallas while sitting on the patio and ordered two drinks from the margarita section. Boy, those drinks were sweet! Shoutout to the bartender for the heavy pour, but I scrambled for my aqua with each sip of my adult beverage. I smiled in amusement as I looked over the drink selections. Very creative to say the least. One of the most eclectic menus I've seen in Dallas. I messed around and ended up eating crickets as an appetizer. Picky eaters, stay away. We settled for some tacos and all of them were extremely spicy. Like too spicy. I'd request a scoville unit test prior to ordering any food items here. A solid 3.5 Star rating from me. It wasn't the best experience, but I love that Ruins is in a prime spot on the strip exuding lots of foot traffic. Stopped by after a drink at Brain Dead Brewery (which I would highly recommend). Anyways, sat in the patio area at Ruins. The patio area had a few long tables which fit my large party without having to wait. There was a heavy smell of cigarette smoke just lingering everywhere though. The inside of the restaurant looked dimly lit and divey. I think it would be a cool place to hang after a night of drinking, but not for a semi-nice dinner with a large party. I got an appetizer (the walking taco: bag of chips with chicken tings, cheese, lettuce & tomatoes). It was EXTREMELY salty. My friends got the al pastor tacos which apparently were very very spicy. Was hopeful since I saw other great reviews, and may have just had ordered bad. Would come back for a more casual night out. read more

It's in deep ellum so of course it was crowded and is by a lot of bars. I feel like I would come again for the drinks or something and just to hang out, but I don't plan on making it my go to for food. I was excited to try this place on my trip to Dallas and man was it worth the stop. This is like if a tiki bar and Mexican food spot had a baby. Man signature Cocktails are made with mescal so be advised but they have a few options with other liquor. Both cocktails I had were fantastic. I had the atezeca 666 and the Dominica. What I found unique about this bar in Deep Ellum is the devil theme and the artwork of the menu. I personally think it's pretty cool. I've been here before and what I loved about this place was the plethora of mezcal drinks. I had the Strangelove which was Montelobos Mezcal, Pomegranate Brandy, Cynar, Chicha Morada, Smoked Chile Bitters. Where it fell short was the time it took to get a drink, it took a good minute.
