Love RUKA! Had a great experience there - highly recommend. My boyfriend and I came here at 6PM on a Sunday night. It wasn't extremely busy, but definitely still a good idea to make a reservation just to be on the safe side since it definitely started to get busy halfway through our meal. Off the bat, we were impressed by the decor and overall ambience of the restaurant. Our server, Mike, was amazing! He gave us great recommendations, including the Phoenix Sunrise and Blackened Octopus, which we tried and loved. Phoenix Sunrise - I'm glad we were recommended the Phoenix Sunrise because I wasn't originally planning on ordering any sushi rolls. With torched salmon, spicy crab, avocado, cucumber, and chili oil, it had the perfect amount of spice. Blacked Octopus - This was one of our favorite dishes. It had lots of flavor, without taking anything away from the octopus itself. Hamachi Ceviche - This was another one of our favorite dishes. It played on a variety of textures, which we thoroughly enjoyed. And, the portion was a lot bigger than we expected - always a plus! Wagyu Steak - My boyfriend really liked this! It was described to have Korean BBQ flavors, but I didn't really taste it. Regardless, still a good dish that was mostly about the meat. We also tried the Dan Dan Noodles and Seared Boy Choy Mue - both were good, but there was nothing about them that stood out like the other dishes. Went on a Monday night, and was excited to try it because I love Yvonne's. OpenTable didn't seem to be working right because the app on Ruka's website didn't show any tables between 5:30 through 8:30pm, but when you went to OpenTable's website itself, there were tons of tables all through that time period. (I even went back and forth to check.) That might explain why the restaurant was half-empty the entire time we were there, though the bar area was well-trafficked. Good: - Food hit some high points. The Fuego Wagyu was tasty and looked fantastic when it was brought to the table (on fire!), the Toro Wasabi was generous with the caviar and delicious (even though I found one small bone in my fish). Fried potatoes and Striped Bass were also yummy, though not particularly interesting. Dessert -- chocolate cremeaux -- was great. The texture of the cremeaux was gorgeous: intense, creamy, light and dense at the same time, like a spoonable chocolate bar. - Along the same lines, the food menu was enticing and fun. Peruvian/Japanese/Chinese? Breath of fresh air. Want to try more dishes. - Nice space! Tables not crammed together, and the decor was eye-catching and cohesive. Great vibe. Meh: - Service was uneven for our table. We got an unprompted cocktail recommendation right off the bat for a very fruity cocktail, which was a little offputting. Then our server disappeared and it was 20 minutes before he came back to get our drink order. The drinks then didn't arrive until after the first dish, which was another 15 minutes later. One drink in the second round was incorrect, which the server knew before he set it down (because it was a repeat and didn't match the first) but tried to persuade the guest to keep anyway. Aside from the drinks, the service was gentle and friendly but rough around the edges. Only one soy sauce dish to share for the table (what if we had wasabi differences?). Plates and glasses bumped when setting down dishes, the same hapless server coming back to our table and explaining the dishes after they were already half-eaten. Our water was always filled, though, so (aside from the initial drink situation) it wasn't like folks were inattentive. I think it was more of a logistical and polish issue -- new place jitters? - Cocktails were meh. The list was a beautiful little booklet but despite its brevity (9 or so individual cocktails and then 2 or 3 large format ones) it was dense -- each cocktail had a paragraph explaining it, which is a lot of reading. I personally found it hard to order from because almost every option had a polarizing ingredient -- coffee oil, pickled onion, purple corn, egg white, etc. After all that, what we wound up getting was quite pretty, drinkable, but mediocre. Too much pebbly ice, one-note (sweet). You know when a cocktail is delicious and you have to stop from quaffing it? These aren't those. I tried four different cocktails (only sips, I promise!) and wouldn't order any of them again. Maybe the large format drinks (at $95 apiece) are better? - Some of the food was only meh. Shrimp sunomono was overcooked and badly needed seasoning. Green noodles had tasty bits but the smoked cobia was tough and didn't make sense. Salmon tacos also needed seasoning, though the taco "shell" was creatively a fried yuzu(?) leaf. Coming after the very tasty Toro Wasabi rolls, they were pretty flavorless. Bottom line: So all in all, I'd come back for that Fuego Wagyu and the Toro Wasabi, and I'd like to try some other dishes, too -- the Chicken Fried Rice and maybe some of the crudos and rolls. Definitely would come back for the desserts. I love the concept and maybe the kinks will get ironed out over time. They served a Gin Sour called the Joker which I thought was arguably the best cocktail in all of Boston. I asked them to recreate the drink but the staff wasn't able to accommodate it. Went to Ruka for dinner and drinks and we were not disappointed! I am GLUTEN FREE and I had a decent selection from the menu. The menu is designed tapas style for you to order multiple plates to share. The grilled octopus, Wagu beef, fried rice and sushi were phenomenal. The service was also exceptional. Enrique was our server and he was always there when we needed him but not intrusive. The team was always circling to remove empty plates or deliver drinks. This was our first time RUKA but it most certainly won't be our last. We were initially drawn in by the amazing ambiance and decor- dark and moody with edgy, colorful pieces throughout the space evoking Japanese vibes. While the menu- both food and drinks- looked impressive, we were hesitant to get too excited about the quality in such a trendy setting. Our server was immediately extremely attentive and knowledgeable, he thus was very helpful in assisting us with our choices. Our first drinks came out, the Beatrix Kiddo and the Gordon Gekko. They were both elegant and delicious, especially the Beatrix Kiddo...wow! Light and fruity and frothy and everything I love in a drink. Our food was equally as good. We started with the Japanese Fried Chicken, bright with a creamy sauce and a bit of spice, presented in such a fun way. Then came the grilled Octopus skewers, our absolute favorite, crunchy but still juicy and soft with just about every flavor a palate could want. We then got the Phoenix Sunrise Roll, it was as yummy as it sounds but maybe not much better than sushi you'd be able to find at any other decent sushi bar, but it was extremely skillfully made. We sat at the sushi bar so it was great to see all the sushi rolls being handmade! The sushi chefs are incredibly talented. Our last dish was the grilled Wagyu Beef skewers, a little spicy and cooked perfectly, a great small snack. We also ended up ordering The Joker- a light, gin forward cocktail, with a fun purple color- and the Hans Gruber- liquor forward with a yummy coffee flavor and presesnted with coffee beans floating in it. The restaurant is on the pricier side and they do have small portions, but we expected that with fine Boston dining, and have eaten in other tapas style places with even smaller portions, so we thought Ruka was fair.
