After hopping around Beale Street for a while we finally found ourselves settled at Rum Boogie Café. The live band (I wish I knew their name because they did a great job!) and the atmosphere of the place made it an enjoyable way to close out the night. Not only was the band enjoyable, but the décor gives the inquisitive eye (me, hehe) something to look at - I must have spent a good 30mins looking at all the guitars hung from the ceiling; though I never did get a straight answer as to if they are authentic... Anyway, the drinks prices are average and there is a cover charge (lame...). But it's a fun spot for all ages (there were a few old ladies cutting a rug to the band). read more

What a great place on Beale St to stop and have dinner while driving through town! We visited on a Saturday night, and had no idea it was Elvis Week, so we are so thankful to have found a table for 8 here! Bring cash. -the prices on the menu r if u pay cash. If u use a credit card they add the 3.9% fee the credit card companies charge. We ate here last night and it was ok. The potato salad was good. BBQ sauce tastes like ketchup with a tang, meh. The alligator gumbo and red beans & rice were pretty good. I'd recommend those. A staple of Beale street, Rum Boogie Cafe is one of the best. The music is first class and the bands are not only talented but fun. Drinks are cold and the crowd is a good time. They can put your cover charge on your drink bill so no need to worry about having cash. Get there early for a good table by the band. read more

I spent 1 night in Memphis, and 2 hours of it were at the Rum Boogie Cafe enjoying beverages, a fun crowd vibe, and a killer band! With seats right up near the stage, the musician in me could weirdly ogle the band members and give them the scrunchy faces, nods, claps, and tips that they deserved. The decor is awesome, old guitars litter the ceiling and the lights above each table are scribbled all over. It's right on a street corner on Beale St, prime location, great pumping sound system, and a plethora of rum beverages (I had some kind of orangey, pineappley rum thingy). And SUCH a great band! A funk blues quartet was there, riffing with the crowd, great stage presence, and hilarious banter in between songs - when I return to Memphis this will be my first stop! read more

What you envision a blues bar to be. Came here on a Tuesday night. A friend told me about this place and it was definitely worth the last stop of the night for me. Keep in mind that by the time I visited this place, I had already visited BB King's (ribs) and Pig on Beale (pulled pork--they're a Whole Hog world champ). I had heard about the Gator Gumbo so that's what I ordered before the band started. Before any of you start to make scrunchy faces, let me tell you that if you enjoy blue crabs, you'll love this gumbo. Being from DC, I've had plenty, I enjoy it, and thus, the gator gumbo gets thumbs up from me. Being called the "Rum Boogie Cafe" I figured they should have good rum drinks. The waitress brought me something pretty fruity which I didn't find all that impressive, plus I could hardly taste the alcohol at all. The music is really what set this place apart from the other places I visited on Beale. The band was a five person band (guitar, bass, tromone, sax, keyboard.) They rocked it! They mixed some blocks, old-time rock, country-ish, jazz, and some more blues. The crowd was small but everyone was feeling the music. Unfortunately I had to leave when they took their first break. If I come back to Memphis, I'm coming here first. read more

Just okay, if you want a dive bar then you're in luck! The bartender, jaa, is passively rude but overall decent. The drinks are priced just slightly high but it is the tourist district so understandable. The place is definitely not clean. I've had two drinks with gnats in them. Gnats are all over the place, especially the restroom. The location is perfect though. This is prime real estate! Give them a try if you don't mind the dive bar atmosphere. read more

Ordered the "JUMBO" smoked wings. I only got 4 regular sized wings for $12. This is even after we asked the waitress if they were bigger than most and she agreed. Good flavor but way too expensive. Some of the "clean" tables were dirty so we walked around for a second before finding one that was clean enough to eat on. Guy sitting at the door doesn't have a clue. Watched us stand in front of him talking about where to sit for 2 minutes before telling us that we needed to seat ourselves. They had a guy come in and sing with a guitar. Beale Street is the heart of the tourist experience in Memphis- and Rum Boogie is a great juke joint right there in the heart of it. First, when you walk in, past the live music, you are surrounded by treasures of some of the most famous blues artist to ever pass through Tennessee. There are guitars from so many bands- I've been in Hard Rock Cafe's with less memorabilia then Rum Boogie. It is really cool to see this collection. The staff at the bar are fantastic. I stopped in this bar several times over my limited weekend adventure in Memphis. Every person here was amazing, friendly, and went out of their way to help us and our weird dietary restrictions. The drinks are a little pricey- probably fair for Beale Street, but high for most anywhere else. But, they were poured well. We mostly stopped in for drinks- but the one time we stopped in for food, it was quite tasty. We had gumbo, fried pickles, nachos with awesome pulled pork (on the side), and fried green tomatoes. Everything was fantastic but the tomatoes - I didn't care for the breading. Add this place to your list to stop in and visit when in Memphis. read more

We walked in here three times on our first trip to Memphis. First time was a Friday night and the music was great and Jim Belushi spontaneously got on stage for a couple songs. It was standing room only so we didn't try the service, but I rate it a five that night for the entertainment. The next time we got a seat in the back but the single bartender on duty completely ignored us even when my brother stood at the bar for 10 minutes right in front of her. We left after one drink. Third time was a food tour in the middle of the day we were the only ones in there. The gumbo sample we had was very good. If you go in when it's quiet you can look around at the collection of guitars memorabilia and signatures all over the place. It is a cool venue with spotty service. Okay, I'm not a fan of having a cover charge just so I can go in and have dinner - that's the main reason I didn't go here for a long time. That being said, the music is usually pretty good and the food is actually very good - seems to be the best on Beale Street (although that statement in itself isn't necessarily saying a ton). It's a strange setup with a huge bar that has limited sight lines to the stage so you either have to pick a table up front near the stage or sit far away at the bar. Wherever you end up though the food will be excellent, the music will be good, and you can also go next door to Mr. Handy's Blues Hall through an unmarked door near the back side of the bar. If you're on Beale Street you can certainly do much worse than Rum Boogie and Mr. Handy's Blues Hall. They're worth checking out. read more

I know 5 stars is a lot but this was the best BBQ I have had in a long time. The wet ribs were the best I had all day and I had three rib meals that day. The dry ribs were great but their wet is better. I've never had nachos like they serve it and I could not stop eating them. There are two other things I should mention. Their baked beans were out of this world and I definitely cleaned the plate. For the last, final and I think most important brag. The jumbo wings were just the best I have ever had, period. Smoked with dry rub then flash deep fried. We could not believe how good these were. I just love this place. The decor is crazy fun. Signed dollar bills taped to the ceiling. Graffiti colors explode. Guitars hanging and on display everywhere. They have a small patio that opens up to the sidewalk of Beale Street. If you can snag one of those, it's the best view to people watch. The second best was our view from inside in a bay window in bar stools looking out at Beale. We enjoyed some stiff drinks and quite expensive. I guess Tito's and Red Bull is considered a premium drink because it was $12. No way could we stay here all day at those prices. With that said, a blues band was playing and the music was fabulous, playing for tips, no cover. We didn't have any food but I'm told the gumbo there is awesome. read more

Service was absolutely horrendous. No lemons for catfish. Asked for real knife to cuts rubs instead of plastic one that broke in ribs and was told to deal with it because we are in a pandemic. AND in a pandemic when everyone else is cashless and contactless for payment this place has the audacity to add a 3.9% fee for paying with debit or credit cards. A nice option on Beale, this place had a blues band playing and a $3 cover. We sat upstairs initially which was cool because you could see/hear the band and shoot pool or just sit and drink. While the upstairs was cool, there wasn't a bar open up there; requiring you to order below and climb a spiral staircase on your way back up. The two bartenders I interacted with were neither rude nor friendly. They took my order quickly and accurately, that's about it. Prices were a bit on the high side, $10 for a draft PBR and Coors. The best thing about this place is all the decor, original STAX sign, Isaac Hayes' cape and all the guitars. read more

Rum Boogies is one of my favorite spots on Beale Street. Years ago I booked tour groups here and they always loved it. To me, it is a great way to experience Memphis and Beale Street. The staff is great and you can't beat the location. It is right on the corner and if you sit upstairs you can see all of the action up and down both sides of Beale. This is also a great place for groups. I always think of it when I need to book a group of visitors downtown. They offer group menus at reasonable prices. it's good for kids during the day, but the night crowd is not very kid friendly. Some of my favorite menu items: Fried pickles and Fried green tomatoes (we are after all a Southern city and you have to try our Southern specialties. They fry them up right here!) I also like the catfish hoagie, the bread is always fresh and the catfish is extra crispy. They specialize in red beans and rice and they are good. I would not order them for a meal as it is just too much of a good thing, the appetizer portion is smaller. I am not a huge fan of their BBQ. It's not that it is bad, but I am somewhat of a BBQ snob. When you grow up here you just have your BBQ preferences. I stick with the fried goodness at Rum Boogies. I wish I was there right now eating and enjoying Memphis music and famous Beale Street. read more
