    Mama Rue
    Kathryn J.

I had a nice lunch here! I just wanted to stop by for a simple sandwich and the Mama Rue hit the spot! A bacon grilled cheese with pimento cheese, it was a crunchy cheesy delight! The fries were also crispy with a delicious seasoning. The restaurant is huge and even though I was here during lunch on Saturday it was mostly empty. The service was a little slow, but everyone was very nice. It was a nice lunch overall!

Came here for breakfast... wasn't digging it. But came here for dinner and that is the right time for a meal here. Their sides were delicious and their cornbread was nice and sweet, almost like a cake! Fried catfish was great not overpowered with that fried taste and not greasy at all! Service is a little slow but they seem busy so that's ok, and they are friendly once they talk to you. Great little place with cute booths and bar with a nice chalkboard menu. Would come here again for lunch and dinner... breakfast though... meh.

I prefer to write my reviews like an old jaded vampire warlock, so proceed with caution. In Transylvania this would never fly. Add a dollar for cheese? RIDICULOUS. Three dollars for any beverage? RIDICULOUS. One soup took 45 minutes to come out, all I ordered was a Tomato Soup. Also it was eight dollars, my drink should not be almost half of that cost. Parking was a $1.50 an hour, so all in all my soup, drink, and parking makes me want to say to the owner of the establishment- as we say in Vampire land- te uiti ca vițelul la poartă nouă. there was also some little kid blasting his kid show on his glass orb (iPad) and annoying the life force out of his grandmother, which did not make for good ambiance, could have made for a proper discipline for the League of Darkness. Server also charged me for toast after my soup came with toast. Realized after I posted my joke-y review. Actually kind of irritated now.

Idk the bartenders name that worked Saturday afternoon July the 13th around 1 but she was so amazing! I ordered the red snapper meal for 23 dollars and my friend ordered the wings for 15. Everything tasted so so good. I will definitely recommend to everyone I know. The restaurant is clean and quiet. There's ample amount of seating and lots of pretty aesthetics to please IG. Please give this place a try!!!!

The Case of the Great Breakfast Caper. Attached to the Doubletree. An All-Around restaurant. Came in for a lite breakfast and to be honest I just didn't want to walk a few blocks to a great coffee shop I've been to before. (I should have listened to my inner self). I ordered a Delta Sunrise. Two eggs over easy with grits, crisp bacon and wheat toast. And coffee. Simple enough right? Coffee came Hot. Which is a requirement to mask bad hotel coffee. Once my food arrived, I should have left. 1 out of 2, 50% or not half bad; is what I saw with a broken egg. To top it off? Literally? Was two freshly placed jelly pods on the broken yolk. So I can say a couple of things with certainty. This plate passed at least two sets of hands before I saw it, four eyes, two brains; you get the idea. And yet nothing registered before presenting this as a viable order. I was already drinking my coffee and for some reason I was not using the handle. After a drink I placed down the cup and saw black on the handle. What's that? I pulled out my Detective Cap and saw finger prints!! Oh, crap we need to solve this case!! The plot thickens. I waved down a server to identify the object and to have the cup sent in for evidence. A new cup of Hot Crappy Hotel Coffee came to my relief. At least something was reliable. After the servers spoke it was determined an ink pen broke. This discovery was AFTER I was served my breakfast. Case notes: Not any attention to detail. Not very sanitary (irony) Hot Crappy Hotel Coffee

Club sandwich was awesome. Fries were hot and crisp. Sourdough bread with melted cheese!!

REGULAR DRINK REFILLS ARE NOT FREE. The food was good and bad at the same time. Based only because of personal preference more than anything else. For example, the salad was great! But instead of regular boiled eggs chopped up and added to it the cooks had (2) Deviled Eggs placed on the side of the salad. The deviled eggs "took away" from the salad rather than "adding" to what was already a great dish. But again some people may enjoy that more than others. Side note: there was also (2) pieces of Pickled Okra in the salad. The atmosphere was a lot more "Barish" than what my wife and I would have preferred because we would rather a quieter atmosphere. But the hotel that the King and Union Bar is attached to (DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Memphis Downtown) gave us a $15 credit per-person to the Restaurant. The Ranch Dressing is really great so they have that going for them! The Service was mediocre. We saw the waitress a total of (4) times throughout the course of the meal. My wife ordered a House Salad with fried Chicken. I ordered the Ribeye Steak with grilled Asparagus, Macaroni and Cheese, and the Pimento Cheese bread. The steak was slightly over seasoned but the sides were all very good. In my unprofessional opinion I should really give this restaurant a (2) Star Rating because of the service, atmosphere, price of the food, and quality of some of the food. ALSO, the refills are NOT FREE. That being said; all in all we were able to make the best of the situation we were in and enjoy the meal rather well. However, because of the food that did taste good and the iconic/ Historic location of the restaurant I'll give it an extra star. The restaurant and hotel are on a corner that is across the street from the Peabody Hotel and the Memphis Redbirds "Autozone Park".

This restaurant is part of the Doubletree hotel. The real problem with this place is the management and staff. They brought coffee but the sweetener container was empty. It took three requests to finally get sweetener. This is why I say the issue is with management and staff. It was breakfast. All condiments should be wiped down and containers filled. This wasn't done on any table (I looked for sweetener and didn't have any luck). It's part of the opening or closing process in well run establishments. We asked several times for coffee refills. Finally got one when we were done eating. For the food, we both got the Delta sunrise. I asked for my eggs to be over easy. One was, the other was over hard. The hashbrowns were very greasy. Bacon and biscuit were the best part of the meal. The other guest had eggs sunny side and said both were fine. They also had grits instead of hashbrowns. They said they were a little dry. There weren't a lot of options in the area for breakfast. Put in the effort to find a different spot.

May have found my new lunch spot. Service: so friendly! We came late night and our waitress was more than happy to serve us. She recommended the delta club and boy she was right in doing so. Food: limited late night menu but it was all good! I had the delta club and it was huge!! Like a cracked out BLT, it was so delicious. Best American style sandwich I've had in a while. All the bread was buttered which was such a bonus that not many places do. The fried green tomatoes were big and juicy. Chicken tenders were yummy. The garden salad was actually really satisfying and a large portion for like $6. Would highly recommend for some American fare downtown!

Hidden Spot Alert, this restaurant is attached to the Double Tree on Union street. Many times I am skeptical of places located in or attached to a hotel. WELL!! this place is an exceptional find. The King Cristo and the breakfast sandwich was Large and in Charge with great robust flavor. If you stay at the Double Tree or just pass by it is worth the stop.. visit King and Union!!

The food however was honestly meh (in my opinion). I got a creole dish and to be fair my dish looked beautiful. The plating was 10/10 but the taste for me left something to be desired. After eating this dish I questioned if I even like creole sauce because it really just wasn't that good. If this is a preference issue, I honestly don't know. I also thought the charcuterie appetizer had a weird mix of items on it from club crackers, to meat and cheese, and random veggies. Not bad but just kind of a weird mix. My husband ordered the salmon and he said it was good, not the best he's had but it was good. Other friends of ours got the white fish among the many other dishes. I did have a salad with these apples on it which was incredibly yummy. I will say though my dish looked amazing some of the other dishes were not plated well. Not to nitpick but to want to be considered a more upscale restaurant which means charging guest more money than say a local Applebee's then knowing how to appropriately garnish or drizzle sauce to elevate at plate is important (see my picture of the chicken dish). All and all not my favorite restaurant but definitely not the worst!!

I can not believe I have not reviewed Soul Fish as of yet. I am a huge fan…read more Let me preface this review by saying ... My grandfather owned two successful catfish restaurants. As a child I grew up on fried fish filets and hush puppies until my grandfather had to retire and sell his restaurant due to his Health. He still cooks up a mess of catfish for us about two or three times a year when we visit. Yum! My standards for good catfish are extremely high. Good fried catfish is not greasy, light cornmeal batter, tender flaky inside, and slightly crispy on the outside. Sounds simple enough but the truth of the matter is... Good fried catfish takes skill. After an epic searched for any decent catfish in Memphis and surrounding areas that took a few years ... My family and I decided to give up. And when I heard about Soul Fish it took some considerable convincing to get them to go. We where, none of us, disappointed! Soul Fish is without a doubt the best Catfish in Memphis. It is perfectly fried... Hushpuppies are tasty, coleslaw edible if not always yummy, fried pickles crisp and tart, pickle green tomatoes so yummy I could swim in them, and vegetables always cooked and seasons well (special recognition to the cabbage, broccoli, and black eyed peas). The service is always friendly, fast, efficient, and correct. The blackened catfish is pretty tasty too ... Sometimes they get a little heavy handed on the seasoning. Deserts are pretty great as well. My sister loves the Mississippi mud chocolate thingy they have (I'm not a chocolate fan). I've introduced many people (about 40 or so) to Soul Fish - locals and visitors alike - and no one ... And I mean not a single one of them where disappointed. So why four stars instead of five? True... the catfish is the best in Memphis - however it is not the best I've ever had. And Sometimes a filet or two at Soul Fish fall short of perfection... However ... I'm a regular and a fan of Soul Fish Cafe. If you have spent hours and disappointed meals trying to find good catfish in Memphis ... Look no further ... This is the place for you. I promise you will not Be disappointed!

I ordered wings and two dry slabs of ribs. When my family and I finally decided to eat the ribs on Monday, they were disgusting. They had seasoning caked all on them, and they were overly salty. We wiped off the caked-on seasoning and tried to eat around the saltiness. I was praying the 2nd slab was not the same. When I opened them on 5/27 to see, they were the same. I was trying to avoid calling because I just didn't feel like being bothered. But I called. I left a message for the manager to return my call that morning because "he is in the middle of an interview." So I called back that afternoon and was transferred to Ethan. I explained the situation to him. As I was speaking, he kept making the noise un-huh. So, I stopped talking and asked him what it meant aside from it just being rude as hell. He went on to explain that they missed a step and did not rub in the seasoning and shake it off. I don't care. It's an internal quality issue that should be handled with the prep and cook staff. Not me. He asked if I had my receipt and, in a tone that suggested he was doing me a favor, advised me that he would replace the slab. No apologies for the inconvenience or anything.   After my long workday, I went all the way downtown to get the slab replaced. In person, Ethan is just as rude. I asked if he was going to replace both slabs. He could clearly see the quality was trash. He said no and that he would only replace one. Then went on to offer me sides and a slice of cake. No, thank you. I can afford sides and cake just like I did those trash slabs of ribs. Those slabs of ribs cost $62.40 before taxes. With taxes probably being another 5 or 6 dollars. Your mistakes and poor quality should not cost me. He had a young lady bring the replacement slab back out to me. She didn't say thank you or anything. One thing I know is that a white man or woman patronizing your business would not have been treated this way. As a result, moving forward I will spend my Black woman dollars elsewhere on barbeque and smoked chicken wings. Also, I removed you all from my company's approved catering list where we spend a nice amount with you all yearly. Tell Ethan, thanks for helping me see the light and not spend money where I'm not respected and where my customer experience isn't valued.
