Price is right; soup is awesome, and if you're going to get a sandwich of any type, ask for the jalapeño cheese roll for the bread; I got the chicken salad on it and it was just a perfect sandwich. Also got a root beer float because it was only 3.99, and it had lots of ice cream. Great service and staff. read more

A little out of the way if your not familiar with Brownwood but absolutely worth making the effort to find. The cafe is located in an old rail car which makes for a cool atmosphere. The seating is limited and tables aren't very big so if you don't like tight quarters, you may get get it to go. Food is classic homemade style burgers and sandwiches. Everything is always fresh and hot. My sons obsessed with trains so any time we're in the area, we have to make a stop. read more

This is a great find while on an impromptu visit to Brownwood. The previous reviews about how truly awesome the customer service is... they are an understatement. Every employee, to include the owner, were personable and friendly. Our server Jenny had only been there a week but you could tell that she was treated like family. Her wonderful personality reflected that. It is refreshing to go to any place nowadays and see people smiling. I might be old but I miss that. The food was very good indeed! Texas toothpicks, RR Club, Philly Cheesesteak and...(WHAT?!?) HOMEMADE ICE CREAM PECAN PIE?!?! All were delicious but... ...My wife doesn't eat chocolate and I haven't eaten ice cream in over 20 years. We devoured that pie!! We actually can't stop thinking about it. Wonderful gem of a place. A great place to eat when you go to the train museum, or anytime. A real train car that has been converted to a diner, I'm amazed how many people you can get in here. The menu is burgers, sandwiches, salads, soups, and appetizers. We did soup and sandwiches and they were great. My club included jalapeno bacon on a jalapeno bun. Very good. This is the small-town diner of my girlhood: burgers and fries, hot dogs and chili. It really is in a rail car, and a neighborhood hangout. Super cute atmosphere, friendly service and good food. The jalapeño roll used as a bun is so delicious, and if you don't like spice, don't worry, it's not hot. The only issue is that since this is a train car, there is limited room so it would be difficult to sit anything larger than a party of 4. Stop it...a fun dining experience AND good food?! Almost too good to be true. The customer service here is some of the best I've ever had anywhere I've been. The food is also very good. I don't usually get an appetizer, but my crew did today. I personally would skip the queso, unless velvetta is your thing...but definitely get yourself the Texas Toothpicks! Seconds please!?! They have jalapeno bacon, which was incredible on my BLT. Did I mention it's in a refurbished train car? So much fun! Tip: It's off the beaten path. Came here for lunch with a couple of coworkers. The space is a bit small, but it's unique. The server was okay. I ordered the lettuce wrapped burger, which was sub par and hard to eat. It was not layered like others I've had; it was kind of thrown together and the flavor wasn't there. I would still come back and try something else though for a quick bite, since it's close to work. read more

Runaway Train Café is the most popular and unique café to eat in Brownwood. As soon as you walk in, you feel what it was like to dine in an authentic dining train car with all of its originality. You are always greeted by our friendly staff to take a seat in one of their booths or on a stool at the old-fashioned ice cream counter. All our burgers are fresh half-pound burgers that you can order with or without cheese. Customer favorites include the bacon cheeseburger with jalapeno bacon and the mushroom & Swiss burger. All our burgers are served with either delicious French fries or tots. Also be sure to try beef hot dogs or the kraut. We have the best burgers you'll ever taste! We also serve amazing sandwiches and homemade soup. For the best of both worlds, definitely get the bowl of soup and half sandwich deal! Tasty appetizers and crisp salads are also available. The jalapeno poppers were a new menu item but they might have been my favorite(other than the croutons). The ribeyes were on special when we visited and they were great, good size, great flavor, and cooked perfectly.
