This is very cute place! The decor is really authentic and the food was good as well as the service. I ordered the crab cake sandwich which was good and my husband got the fish and chips and let me tell you that his was a 10/10 I would come back to get that everytime. I wish I had taken a picture tho.

We sat upstairs on the open deck on a warm autumn day. The waitress was patient as we questioned the menu options and returned when we finally decided. She ordered the drink special which ended up being very sweet so she settle for a gin and soda and I had a nice spicy Bloody Mary. She ordered the jerk burger medium rare and I ordered the coconut chicken. The burger came out overcooked and was returned, the second burger came out just as overcooked and the jerk sauce was overly sweet. The fries are very good. The Coconut chicken on the other hand was amazing. Not only was the chicken moist all the way through, the crusted coconut on the outside was flavorful, the chicken had a wonderful coconut flavor all the way through. For the end she had Key Lime pie that she enjoyed and I had an extraordinary slice of cinnamon roll cheese cake

We couldn't wait to see the renovations. So glad we went to the bar to have drinks and hors d'oeuvres. The service and staff are as awesome as they have always been. The thing we missed the most is the mural on the wall in the bar. Everything is so vanilla now. They need to add a little bit of color back to the walls.

I came back here for another sit-down meal. I had the Hawaiian mahi sandwich. It also came with a side of fries, which came out hot and seasoned nicely. There was a nice crisp to them too. The sandwich had a blackened mahi loin on a brioche bun with lettuce, tomato, grilled pineapple, and a Cajun tartar sauce. This was well put together. The ratio of filing to bun was ideal. The piece of mahi was seasoned appropriately and was a nice size. The pineapple added a little sweetness to it. I was expecting more from the tartar sauce, but not a big deal as I enjoyed the sandwich as a whole. I also tried the rundown fish burrito which had grilled ahi tuna, tomatoes, cheddar jack cheese, black beans, jalapenos, and BBQ sauce. I was hesitant to try this because of the presence of the BBQ sauce, but it was not really tasted because of the rest of the flavors incorporated. The fresh jalapenos on the half I tried were extremely spicy. Besides that, it was well received.

This is a re-review based on a recent visit. I brought my guests here for a light lunch. My wife and I usually eat here and the food is usually good. This last visit fell short of my expectations. I brought 5 old friends here to enjoy a nearby lunch. Light lunch was our intention. We ordered beers and they were fine. Food was not fresh. I had a. Arafat salad that was served with "soggy" croutons. Not sure how this could happen unless the salad fixings w ere preserved and refrigerated. The others ordered light meals such as the tuna bites and the tacos. Nothing memorable. Hope this was just an "off day"

We stopped here for lunch after visiting the town of Duck, home of Duck Donuts. Not sure what to expect, but we enjoyed the entrees offered. Although the menu is somewhat limited to the selections, all of our dishes were well prepared and presented. The interior was decorated with a island theme. There are two main seating areas, ground level and an upper level. Like other popular establishments in Outer Banks area, it can get crowded during peak lunch and dinner hours. You may want to visit outside the normal peak hours.

We were in the mood for seafood and Rundown Cafe had high reviews. We came here early afternoon, it was not busy at all. Our server was friendly and attentive to our table. The ambiance is a chill spot and ironically isn't 'rundown.' At the time of our visit their rooftop deck/patio was under renovation. The food we got was exactly what we were looking for. It was delicious! The crab cake burger was so good. They serve their dishes with a chipotle tartar sauce and its boss! Overall this place was a total win and we'd come back in the future!

Food was delicious. I had the shrimp tacos. There are lots of shrimp on the three tacos. The coleslaw and avocado added great taste and texture. My husband had the mahi blackened sandwich. We would both order the same again. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. The only issue was that it was ridiculously cold in the restaurant. It was 58 outside but was probably 55 or less inside. Maybe the goal is to sell their sweatshirts.

This was my first experience for food in OBX. We chose this place based on the menu options and Yelp reviews. :( I am not sure what people in this area are used to, but everything tasted like it came out of a box. Really poor quality food like substances. Service was bordering on neglect. It was really loud in there too. We had to shout to hear each other. The only positive thing was that the presentation was lovely. read more

This is my second time eating at Rundown Cafe, and both times it has been excellent. I was seated very quickly, and my server was at my table almost immediately. She was quick to return with my drink order, as well as my appetizer. I ordered the namesake 'Rundown Soup', which was hearty and savory, with good chunks of fish. It was wonderful. For dinner, I ordered the daily special of a fried Mahi-Mahi taco covered with a chutney with pineapple, coconut and mango flavors dominating. On the side was very flavorful rice and beans , as well as a dollop of sour cream. The on-tap beer selection was limited, but included FatTire, Longboard and Guinness among several others. If you are looking for great tasting seafood dishes in the Outer Banks, you really need to stop by Rundown Cafe - it's delicious and won't break the bank. The service was excellent as well. read more

The place is clean, they even have a nice koi fish pond in front of the restaurant. We asked to be seated on the second floor. The waitress was very polite and took our order. After that, it went southbound. They gave my wife the wrong salad to start and I asked our waitress if it was the house salad she ordered, she said yes but we knew it was incorrect. We told another waitress and she said sorry for the mistake and she corrected it by bringing us the house salad my wife ordered. After that, the waitress brought my daughter overcooked grilled chicken for her kids pasta that tasted like charcoal We told our waitress and she took care of us by bringing us another plate of grilled chicken minus the charcoal. So, then my noodle bowl came out the vegetables were still raw. I pushed it into the broth hoping it would cook it. Once I did that, I noticed the broth wasn't hot. I took a sip and it was only luke warm. I told the waitress to heat it up and she took the bowl and brought me the same luke warm bow back. I just couldn't believe they couldn't even warm it up. I asked the waitress one more time to warm up the bowl, so she took the bow away and brought me back another luke warm bowl. It wasnt any hotter, I got upset at this point that my ramon noodle bowl was the same luke warm dish. So the manager came over and apologized and ask if I wanted something else, by that time I was done with this place. My family have finished their food and I was still hungry. I left this place hungry and upset. Needless to say, I would never recommend this place. First and last time going here. read more

Some friends invited me to dinner there on Monday Night.. Fried Chicken Night.. I had Humboldt Calamari appetizer that had the biggest piece of squid I'd ever eaten and it was very tasty. Had the fried chicken as well and after having some of the chicken from Rundown all I can say is that is a "tie" between them and my other fav place at the OBX for fried chicken. I also had a double serving of thier collards for my two desired sides that also come with the meal. They were prepared just the way I like them, cooked and seasoned perfectly. The kitchen staff just needs to spend more time washing them and making sure all grit is gone. Defiantly worth a visit, friendly staff and good value for your money. read more

This was a great place to hv late lunch! The food is really tasty and not ur regular flavours.. the fusion is all over and so well done! Also the outdoor seating was fabtastic in a high deck with ocean views ! Will comemback before we leave obx! Also service was outstanding (not ur usual deck service where u get forgotten) he was on top of good sevice and super friendly! read more

upstairs or downstairs, inside or outside, all is wonderful. You get a decent view of the water from upstairs. We did experience the overly aggressive flies but the food totally made up for them. I ordered the special "Blackened chicken with strawberries and goat cheese", holy crow was it DELICIOUS! Billy got the tuna and was equally pleased. The best was the blackbean/salsa/rice side that our dishes came with. I could eat that forever! The servings were perfect, I felt a little too full but that's because I ate every last black bean on my plate :) The prices were surprisingly reasonable. Our total with drinks for lunch was less than $30. The only not so perfect thing was that the service was kinda slow, which is ok if you are in the midst of your vacation and you 'ain't got ish to do' but we were on a slight time crunch. overall we cannot wait to go back! read more

I had 2 visits to the Rundown Cafe...the first visit was for dinner with my best friend and her family who wanted to try a place they haven't been in NC before.There was a bit of a wait but they gave us the option of going up to their Tsunami bar for drinks or an appetizer while we waited. But we decided not to spoil our appetites so we just waited to be seated. I ordered the Choco Loco Chicken Sandwich it was actually better then i thought it was going to be.. i mean lets be honest coconut crusted chicken? But it was a huge piece of chicken with a crunchy exterior and a moist interior. The Pineapple sauce was interesting i couldn't really put my finger on what was in it other then pineapple but i think it needed a bit of a kick of some sort.It kind of left me wanting some spice to balance the sweetness. The sandwich came with fries which were salted and peppered the fries were really good with the pineapple sauce. My Second Visit was just for drinks on another night... we figured because it was so packed when we went for dinner that the bar was a pretty happening place. We came after having dessert and wanted to just get a drink.Unfortunately my friend and i missed the crowd.. we went up to the Tsunami Bar and there was pretty much nobody there. We showed up around 10:45 people seemed to be clearing out so it was a bit uncomfortable for us to stay. So ordered our drinks and hung out for a bit while the staff cleaned up and quickly finished our drinks. We ordered the Georgia Peach which was the special for $5.00. Overall:the ambiance is interesting it gives you a Jamaican kind of feel but they played today's hit music which threw me off a bit.The decor is something to look at since there is some interesting art pieces and random knicknacks around the restaurant. The Tsunami Bar would probably be fun if there more people there when we went. My guess is its usually pretty poppin when people are waiting for a table. read more

Had the Spicy Lemon grass noodle bowl with game fish. It was one of the best noodle fish bowls I have had in a long time. Talked with the owner Michael very nice and hands on with his customers a rare quality I would say. Fiancé had the game fish sandwich which she said it was excellent. read more

This was our first team eating here. We had to wait for about 44 minutes to get a table upstairs. We went on a Saturday mid afternoon , about 2pm. I ordered the tuna sandwich which was good but nothing exceptional. My daughter got one of their poke bowls and that was amazing. The tuna, fresh veggies and seasoning were in point. read more

We ate at the Rundown Cage on our last day in OBX. I had crispy shrimp with noodles and the best sauce ever. What a fantastic meal one of the better I have had in a long time. Service was great. Atmosphere nice. I would recommend it to everyone! read more

I love this style of food. We all had really good dishes. I had the lemongrass fish bowl. It was amazing! My husband has coconut shrimp served in a half of a pineapple. One of the best meals I've had since being in the OBX. I will absolutely be back! read more

Our group of 4 walked in on a rainy night about 15 minutes ago. Said we would sit at upstairs bar and have some drinks. Lovely hostess took us that way and brought menus. There were two barstools we were willing to sit at with the other two standing behind. Older white haired bartender, younger busser with mullet and younger female bartender were behind bar. Older lady said I need you to have a table...you can't stand here. We explained wanted bar but apparently that's not allowed. Consequently we left. We've been to Rundown many times in the past and stood at the bar with no issues. Apparently it is now, at least at upstairs bar. Just pretend you want the business....fake it till you make it. Until then, our dollars and tips are going elsewhere. Hostess downstairs was accommodating...upstairs staff probably needs a lesson in hospitality. read more

A very nice local woman recommended the Rundown and boy am I glad she did! If you want something other than fried shrimp or a hamburger this restaurant has dishes from all over the world. The poke appetizer was delicious and the homemade rundown soup with coconut milk was so good I could have licked the bowl! Really fresh, tasty food with a great crew of bartenders and wait staff. Highly recommend. read more

If you're visiting the OBX, you absolutely MUST try the Rundown Cafe! Of all the places we tried on our vacation, this one stands out the most. The Rundown Cafe truly goes above and beyond when it comes to exceptional customer service, delicious, high quality food, and a fun, unique atmosphere. When we were on vacation for a week in the OBX, we actually came here twice because it was so amazing! The restaurant features many Caribbean and Pacific Rim dishes. It is a relaxed environment and the perfect hang out spot. There is a lower level dining area, an upper level dining area, a bar, and a deck. We sat out on the deck both times with a perfect view of the beautiful ocean. They also have a koi pond where you can feed the fish, and it's so much fun! The customer service is phenomenal, and definitely some of the best I have ever experienced at any restaurant. The restaurant is very accommodating and can help you adjust the ingredients in your meal to fit your own personal diet. My favorite items here are the Chicken Quesadilla, Humboldt Calamari Points, and the Steamed Broccoli. I 100% recommend this place! The Rundown Cafe is one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. I can't wait to come back again on our next vacation to the OBX!! read more

Can't believe I have waited this long to go!! The food was absolutely amazing, the customer service excellent, and the atmosphere is perfect for the location. We were fortunate to be out on The Hula deck for appetizers and got to enjoy both a beautiful view of the moon and the band. We then moved inside for dinner and the food was exceptional. From the poke and fish bites, to the noodle bowls, I can't say enough! I think this is the first place that I never had to ask for a water refill and I drink A LOT of water!! I will definitely be back and bring friends too! Thank you!! read more

Recently visited two weeks ago. They sat us on the top deck area. Because of COVID, we were the only ones up there, which was great. Service was excellent. Our waiter was really nice and attentive. Portions were generous and the food was great. We started with the nachos supreme, which I highly recommend. My wife and I had two different fish tacos, which were excellent. My son loved his burger, rundown style. It was all quality food for a reasonable price compared to other places down there. read more

First visit and it certainly won't be the last. Seeing the portion size of the customers there we opted to split the baha fish tacos and ordered extra wraps to make bean/rice wraps. Delicious. Our server Airianne was very friendly and attentive from start to finish. We notified her of a severe allergy and she smiled and said no problem. She ensured our choices were safe and checked with the chef to ensure no cross contamination. read more

This place is just bad. The servers started off with an attitude which continued throughout the meal. None of our food arrived even slightly warm (or good), so I decided not to risk eating the chicken sandwich I ordered to avoid possibly getting sick. Skip this place. read more

Great food!!! My husband and I stopped in here for lunch a were very happy we did. The beachy seafood with a Thai infusion was smart and delicious. The coconut shrimp with mango Siracha sauce was amazing with a spicy ginger coleslaw. Baha tacos were good as well and black beans served with sour cream on the side. What a perfect combo. Chicken and rice with veggies and an orange ginger sauce was great too. Definitely recommend this place. read more

Every time we come to Kitty Hawk to stay for vacation, going to the Rundown is a gotta do ! We highly recommend!!! Food is amazing and service matches it ! Also very clean and friendly atmosphere!!! We went for dinner and ordered two Oriental Noodle Bowls, Jerk Bacon cheese burger, fish tacos, and Fish burrito. Overall good. Favorite was the Noodle Bowls. My daughter gave them a triple thumbs up. She felt like she was back in Hawaii! My son's fish wrap was good. He said he liked it better than the one at Tortuga's Lie. My husband, on the other hand said he thought his fish tacos were a bland compared to Tortuga's Lie. Cheeseburger was very good. Nice atmosphere here. Even live entertainment after 6 pm on the deck after we left. Would definitely recommend. read more

My husband and I ate here for lunch on Saturday around 11:30. We were seated in the bar area upstairs. The view was spectacular and the music was upbeat. We couldn't help but sing along! Our waitress immediately took our order and the food came quickly. We had the Chorizo tapas plate and the red pepper glazed chicken as appetizers. The flavors were uniquely combined and the results were culinary nirvana. For our main entree, we had the coconut chicken with the jasmine rice and broccoli. Oh so good!!! We absolutely loved all three dishes we tried during our visit! We cannot wait to come back the next time we visit the Outer Banks!!!! read more

We just didn't like the food. Peel n eat shrimp was way over cooked and rubbery. . Noodle bowl was cold and lacking. won tons were stale and paltry amount of vegetable. Coconut shrimp was ok but pricey. We would not return. Also the condensate from the a/c was dripping on the table they first seated us at. Service was ok. read more

Not really impressed. The jerk fish and chicken were very bland (and the broccoli). Their version of jerk was a pesto vice a seasoned rub. The atmosphere was on point though, really enjoyed the ambiance. Over all, I doubt I will return anytime in the near future. One of my first yelp reviews, if that means anything to you all. read more

The idea of the Rundown cafe was born in 1993 from tropical travel adventures and a love for the fresh exciting foods of the Islands."Rundown" is the name of a coconut milk, fish chowder so named "Because Mon it run down so good." We imported the name and the soup to the Outer Banks, and the Rundown Cafe was born... Over the years, our recipes developed into an eclectic blend of Pacific Rim and Caribbean fusion. We just call it "Island Food". In addition to our main dining room we added the Tsunami Bar, our nostalgic surf themed dining room upstairs, or enjoy appetizers and drinks on our latest addition the ocean view "Hula Deck". Located on The Beach Road or Old Hwy 12 overlooking the Atlantic. Look for the giant koi pond where the kids can feed the fish. Relaxation, value, and good healthy exciting new foods is our focus. Surfing into 22 years of service The Rundown Cafe has evolved into a fusion restaurant of cuisine and atmosphere. Staying true to our roots of casual affordable family dining we have also taken on the adventure of traveling the world's island archipelagos and exotic countries to bring you the menu and motif that is before you now. Our name is derived from a Jamaican Soup that 'Ran down so goooood mon'. We imported the name and the soup and so began our journey. Over the years our menu has developed into a blend of Pacific Rim & Caribbean dishes. Since our inception in 1993 we've grown into a bigger building and completed the addition of the Tsunami Bar & Deck. Meet the Business Owner: Michael M.

Native to San Diego and after some good cross country exploration Michael found the Outer Banks in 1993 and fell in love with the island lifestyle. After waiting tables there and purchasing the restaurant from friend and mentor Will Thorp the rest is a litany of travel and recipes that in one way or another found their way to The Rundown Cafe. It just never gets enough brine impact. They make good small caliber fries that were piping hot and the slaw was fine for me. Ms T did not care for it so I got it all. Our food was OK, not stellar. The service was excellent, but I still can't make this better than three stars. I hope to convince her to return for a burger during this trip.

We spent the last week on the Outer Banks hitting the beach, exploring the sights, and trying new restaurants to our family. The Rundown Cafe is a gem! We found this spot on our 2nd to last day and can't believe we didn't find them earlier. Our family of four each found a favorite on their large menu. My favorite was the Special of the evening..... mixed seafood grill with a fresh avocado salsa! Bright, healthy, and packed with flavor. The atmosphere is bright and fun...... Kids spent time feeding the fish at the Koi Pond and even checked out the Hula Deck upstairs that had live music. A definite return spot for our family, affordable, quality, and fun venue for the whole fam. read more

Our favorite beach dining experience..!!! We had a terrific meal and loved the deck with ocean views. The staff accomadated our large family (kids too) and everyone was thrilled with their choices. Several in our group had the fish tacos (reminiscent of California fish tacos, yummy..!!!) and the noodle bowls were a big hit. The Rundown fish chowder was the best we ever tasted. Our dishes were full of flavor, reasonably priced and the portions were large. The t-shirt selection was awesome with lots to choose from. We will be back for the live music later this week and look forward to trying more of the creative menu!!!!! read more

Horrible service!!!!!! I felt like we was being served by a methed out crazy person. She came to the table to take the order and never returned. we had to ask for refills because one member at the table was choking. The waitress then started screaming behind the bar that she was putting up with someone that ordered water to drink. She proceeded to yell behind the bar. The food runners was amazing they done all the work. The owner was very nice but she also screamed in front of him. I felt bad for him. Victoria was the waitres. I believe she needs to find a new type of employment before she runs off all of the paying customer. read more

We visited this restaurant during a family vacation. What a great experience! The restaurant has a very cool tropical atmosphere and theme. We had drinks up on the Hula Deck, listened to some great live music, and had a beautiful view of the ocean. We had dinner inside, and everyone was satisfied with the amazing Asian noodle dishes, big salads, and great burgers. Special thanks to the friendly staff! P.S. We've been here a few times now and it's starting to become our go-to place for lunch and dinner. The staff are incredibly friendly, the place is clean, and the view is amazing from the upstairs. There are a ton of delicious healthy options (yea!) which helps justify getting a cocktail. ;) You can also feed the koi in the koi pond at the entrance which serves as a nice incentive for little kids to behave during the meal. read more

The food is always consistently good and owner, Michael Montiel, is always changing the menu to add new and delicious dishes while keeping the oldies but goodies. I am a local year round resident of Kitty Hawk, and I eat at Michael's (Rundown Cafe) on a regular basis. Michael is a great guy, a wonderful chef, and the restaurant is friendly, and the food is ALWAYS excellent.
