Came here for brunch. Was seated right away on the patio. It was a bit chilly but they had heaters and blankets which was much appreciated. Service was quick and our waiter was nice and knowledgeable. Very friendly. I go a coffee and my "friend" got a mimosa. We got the buttermilk biscuits to share and I got the breakfast sandwich. Everything was so delicious. I accidentally dropped my fork on the patio floor and it fell through a crack in the wood and I was too embarrassed to say anything. sunday brunch is VERY busy. we sat upstairs and it's extremely noisy. BECAUSE it's so busy, pack your patience because service is extremely slow. We got an order of cinnamon roll and we were sharing but never got little plates with it and it was super messy to eat. we never could get our waiters attention to ask .It was very tasty however. We had brunch cocktails. the bloody mary's were good and so was the white wine sangria. I had the special sandwich which was meatloaf wrapped in bacon with an egg which was tasty. the biscuits and gravy was huge and tasty. The BLATE SANDWICH on grilled sourdough was also good. We visited the "HYBYCOZO / Patterns in Nature" exhibit at the Missouri Botanical Gardens with friends a couple weekend evenings ago and we dined at Russell's before hand - it was a great way to start the evening. We almost ate outside but stick indoors; Maggie was a great server. We enjoyed a nice Bees Knees drink, complete with elderberry - nice. I had a fantastic flatbread and a little bit of m wonderful wife's spare ribs special - fantastic sauce for this one! I am back to update my review and give russell's the 5 stars it rightfully deserves. The brunch service is superb, but, my lord, I think their dinner service takes the cake. Regardless of when you go a few things remain true: the place feels like home, and the service is spectacular. It's cliche to say the secret ingredient is love, but, let me tell you, you can taste the love, care, and craftsmanship in every dish. Just superb attention to detail. The vibes are spectacular. Families, lovers, friends, and everything in between filling the air with stories, memories, and laughter. Hardwood tables and hardwood floors are authentically rustic from the tens of thousands of souls that have come to make memories here. Oh, and the white lasagna special may just be added to my death bed meal. A spectacular pesto accompanied fresh mushrooms in a beautiful lasagna. Creamy, savory, and edges that were crisped to perfection. It took every ounce of will power to save enough to warrant a box so I have lunch for work tomorrow. This quaint and cozy spot serves up seriously delicious, seasonally inspired dishes that really impress. We started with the focaccia topped with ricotta, balsamic, and roasted grapes. The focaccia is house made, fresh, buttery, and perfectly grilled, then we layered with creamy ricotta and roasted grapes balsamic reduction. Honestly, perfection. Next up were the fried potato croquettes. Crispy panko on the outside with fluffy potato on the inside, served with a ranch style dipping sauce. For entrées, we had the sourdough and fennel stuffed pork tenderloin wrapped in crispy bacon over Parmesan grits, the grilled dry aged filet topped with crispy shallots and red wine reduction served over buttermilk mashed potatoes with broccolini, and the ricotta gnudi. Pillowy cheese filled pasta paired with roasted seasonal vegetables and mushrooms in a creamy white sauce. Every dish was thoughtfully executed and the flavors worked so well together. For dessert, we shared two of their house baked and very large cupcakes. Fluffy, generously filled, and topped with plenty of buttercream, it was such a great way to end the meal. FINALLY made it to Russell's for brunch this weekend after hearing good things for years! We made a reservation but our table took a bit longer to be ready, which wasn't a huge deal. we were seated on the patio with heaters, each of the chairs also had a little blanket which I loved since it was so cold today! We of course split the cinnamon roll to start and it is everything I dreamed of and more - you HAVE to get this! I also split the braised beef and cheddar and the Cuban with my friend. Both were great but the Cuban was really special - insanely delicious and a huge portion! The waitress was very nice but our food and drinks ended up taking a long time. She did mention our tables food was coming out the slowest and she was extremely apologetic and comped our beverages to make up for the delay which was so kind, classy and appreciated! Brunch at Russell's is what dreams are made of. My friend and I came here without a reservation, and we were lucky enough to snag a table without a super long wait time. The bartender was so great, very personable and great to talk to. We ended up so little the biscuits with a side of gravy (highly recommend) and I got the Cuban sandwich. The sandwich is MASSIVE. It will definitely last you 2 meals, and is also served with fries. The bread is crunchy and soft, and the flavors all completed one another well. I loved it. There is a large indoor and outdoor seating area, and we were situated outdoors on a very nice day. We got the burrito, lola, and the buttermilk biscuits, all of which hit the spot. It was not dry, and the balance of salty and sweet was delightful. The lola was also excellent; the bun was perfectly airy and soft. It was huge and had so much flavor and came on buttery mashed potatoes. I also tried some of my friend's local Buttonwood chicken on warm potato salad. I don't think I will ever stop talking about this dinner. I always knew Russell's was good, but this was next level. When I saw their post about the "cold weather comforts," I knew I had to go. We each did the pre fixe dinner- this included a salad, entree and dessert. Each. The chicken pot pie soup was not included, but was worth it. This soup--one of the best things I have ever eaten. I was speechless eating it. I had to text multiple people mid soup to tell them about it. The chicken was flavorful, and huge pieces. The soup itself was so delicious. It felt like a warm hug. I ordered the cottage pie. So delicious and hearty. The braised short rib was so tender. The potatoes were perfectly whipped. I cannot wait for the leftovers. My friend ordered the lasagna. The lamb was incredible. So hearty, and didn't feel heavy like some lasagnas can be. The serving size was huge. We will also be eating this tomorrow! Now the apple crisp. We were full by course two, but we had to dig in. It was fresh out of the oven. The vanilla bean whipped cream was so fresh and balanced out the crisp. For other visits we've had steak, chicken, burgers, bacon-wrapped meatload, and more--all winners! Brunch is a super popular with locals; get your name on the list early! The dining room downstairs is lovely. For a more laid-back experience, grab a stool at the bar upstairs or enjoy the welcoming patio. And service is top-notch (shout-out to Clint, who's always helpful and never misses a beat!) The liquor offerings aren't extensive, but there's a top-shelf and a mid-range bottle in most categories (a couple Scotches, vodkas, etc.) The cocktail menu includes standards plus more creative drinks. A few local craft options are on the beer list, along with the usual AB products. I'm not into wine but noted about 10 whites and 12 reds on the list. Finally, let's not forget Russell's bakery roots. When you enter, peer through the glass cases to see gorgeous layer cakes, pies, brownies, muffins, and much more. We had reservations for 9:30, and the restaurant was just starting to fill up. Service, as always, was fast and very friendly. I asked for a twist on a cocktail from the menu, and my request was filled with no trouble. To start, we ordered a cinnamon roll, which we've never done before, and oh my gosh, it was huge and delicious. The edges were crispy, and the inside was soft and fluffy. The icing was strategically placed on top so you could get as much as you wanted in each bite. We barely made a dent in it before our food arrived. I ordered the hash special, and it was full of fresh, perfectly cooked vegetables with an egg on top. My husband ordered the crab cake special and absolutely devoured it. Packing up leftovers to take home, our server asked if we wanted a sample of their gooey butter cake that was on special for $10. I'm not sorry we said yes; it was the creamiest, most delicious gooey butter cake I've ever tasted. On our way out, we stopped at the pastry counter and purchased not only the gooey butter cake but also a bottle of wine that normally retails for around $30 that was on sale with the gooey butter cake for a total of $18. It was pretty much the icing on the cake. So--beautiful location, excellent service, delicious food, and an entire dessert with wine for later. I can't imagine anything that could be improved. The grilled focaccia appetizer was amazing, the whipped ricotta had grapes and just the right amount of vinaigrette. Would/have to get it again when we return. My 80-year old mother asked me to take her for lunch here when I was visiting from Houston. We didn't have reservations. When we arrived at noon, it was very busy and were told there was a 30 minute wait. I asked where to wait and the front desk person said either outside on metal chairs in the 90+ degree sun, or in our car. My mom needs to sit and can't wait outside, so I took her back to the car. I got a text saying we had been added to the OpenTable waitlist, but was never notified that our table was available. My mom was really hungry, so I came back to check on the status of the reservation. The front desk person told me that she had texted me that our table was ready, but I hadn't received it. She also told me that I would have to leave by 1:30 pm because there was a party. Turns out the table was upstairs, so my mother, who has difficulty walking, had to go up the stairs, which is very difficult for her (she has a handicapped parking sticker, for example). When she got to the seat, she said, "I am just glad to be sitting." We ordered a quiche and an egg, avocado, BLT sandwich. Those took 20 minutes to come. This made me quite anxious, being that we were told that we only had the table for a limited time. Sadly, my sandwich was too difficult to eat, with soft sourdough bread, chunks of avocado that popped out of the sandwich, and very well cooked bacon that did not cut or tear easily. I gave up after a half of the sandwich. This was my time with my treasured mother, who literally doesn't leave the house. A few recommendations for the owners: Ask people if they can walk up the stairs like you would do when you ask people if they are ok eating outside. Change the metal chairs to plastic chairs and offer water so people can wait there and not burn their legs. Make sure you text the right phone number to people who choose to wait. After people wait, welcome them and thank them for waiting. It was work for them. Then, make them feel welcome to take the time to eat in your establishment. read more
