I took off on a redeye this morning (coffee courtesy of Blueprint), and landed on the Farm Sampler: two scrambled eggs, applewood smoked bacon, sourdough toast, sliced avocado and sauteed shiitake mushrooms. Phenomenal flavors and textures. Toast is typically an afterthought for me, but the buttery crunch of the sourdough has to be spotlighted. The Bee's Knees cocktail was also a wonderfully refreshing prelude to the approaching STL summer. I think that Songbird suffers from a problem that many businesses have when they scale up: the personal connection is lost, and the food no longer tastes like it is made with love. I was very excited to try them but left knowing I would not return. I waited 40 minutes on a weekday morning for a bar seat for one, standing because all the waiting area seats were taken. The hostess/waitress was very nice when she got to me, but you could tell that the amount of customers was simply too much to handle. Now, this was okay - I should have made a reservation, and it's not the staff's fault they were overwhelmed. However, the service once I sat down was patchy, delayed and distracted. I had to remind different servers of my presence, multiple times. I was willing to overlook this if the food had been fantastic, but unfortunately, their most popular item, the combo breakfast sandwich, was so incredibly heavy. The first bite was crispy, oily and fatty deliciousness, but by the third bite it was simply too rich. The sweet overtone of the honey was lovely but did not cut through the grease. By the time I finished half, I understood why several diners had left the other half uneaten. My personal preference is for a fresh, umami yet balanced sandwich that does not make me feel queasy after finishing it. This was not the sandwich for me. There was a long delay after I finished eating for them to bring me the check. My whole meal took around 2.5 hours. I had arrived starving and, I like to think, with an open mind. These are my honest, unfiltered observations. It is wonderful that so many people want to try their food and that their new space is bigger. Their decor, glassware and menu were cute and tasteful. We had a Caesar salad, the breakfast sandwich and the burger all of them were delicious and came out really quickly even though they were busy. The restaurant and bathroom were very clean. The only areas of improvement was the latte and cappuccino ; the milk was not frothed at all it seemed there was no foam at all. The server seemed pretty annoyed that we asked to move tables before we were even sat because the table they were putting the two of us at was next to a larger group and they were pretty loud already. We sat by the window and it was HOT. Like sweating-through-brunch hot. The rest of the restaurant seemed cool and comfortable, so maybe just avoid that area if it's sunny out. Food was good overall. I liked the chicken sausage and the signature sandwich. I also got the seasonal maple iced latte, it was a little more savory than I was expecting, but still good. What a little gem in the tower grove area! We happened to walk in a little after 8am on a Sunday morning and were surprised to hear all the tables had a reservation, but we could sit at the bar....so we did. Note.....make a reservation! I started with the vanilla bean latte (iced) and my son and husband had the songbird latte (hot) both drinks were excellent. Full of flavor and as you can see from the pictures, the hot lattes had lovely art. For the main event, I had the Grassfed Beef Patty Melt (with a side of cheesy grits), while my son and husband had the Combo Breakfast sandwich. I love the original Songbird so I was a little nervous coming to the new location, you know how it is when a place expands, you always hope nothing changes. Happy to report it did not disappoint! The new spot is so much bigger, lots of seating and a spacious layout. We did a walk in for brunch so we knew going in there'd be a wait and ended up on the waitlist for about 45 minutes. I went here for a brunch with a friend and although it is not traditional diner food it is a healthier but delicious take on it. I got a sandwich with egg, honey and bacon and it literally was the perfect blend of salty and sweet. Felt like a hangover cure. The new place is so pretty! I made reservations for Sunday morning right at opening time, 8:00 AM. We found a spot in the lot next to the building where there are several spaces. There is also plenty of street parking at the time on Sunday morning. Right at 8:00 people started getting out of their cars to line up for opening. For people that are used to Three Monkeys or Mama 2's Biscuits, the door is on the side, it isn't the front corner. Very much like Songbird's original location. It has a ramp leading to the door and the line formed there. We waited about 5 or so minutes before the doors opened and then we were led to our table by the owner. We were sat in the second room, lots of windows, great metal dividers, large felt eggs as artwork. Great space. The table felt roomy for four guests. We reviewed the drink menu and when our server came back, we ordered our drinks but weren't ready to order food yet. When she brought our drink order we placed or order for food, three of the farmer market famous sandwiches and one classic breakfast with chicken sausage. The songbird latte was great! Salted caramel and smoked maple, so good. We waited quite a while for our food, I think there was a backup in the kitchen from a large to-go order, when the food came out it was a hit, the three who got the famous sandwich were blown away! This is an insanely popular restaurant. I'm grateful I had the foresight to book a reservation because there was a 40-minute wait by 11am on a Saturday. The food was good but I was expecting more given how bananas packed the place was. I got the Songbird latte and while it had a tasty smoky caramel flavor without being too sweet, the temperature of the beverage was lukewarm. My server was excited about the Breakfast Tamale but I opted for the Sprouted Grain English Muffin Sandwich, and he enticed me to add the "thick cut" of heirloom tomato for about $2. The sandwich was really good, albeit a little bit tricky to eat, and the bread was a little soggy on the bottom. The heirloom tomato addition wasn't worth the cost -- it was a very thin, mealy slice, and didn't pack the wow factor I was expecting. Rich and strong with a great coffee flavor. All our drinks came served in a cute glass you'll want to take home. Our server was so kind and accommodating when we mentioned we were on a time crunch, and everything came out quickly (we even finished with 25 minutes to spare!). Food-wise, the French toast was indulgent, topped with peach compote and sweet ricotta--almost dessert-level sweet, but the bread was better than a lot of the French toast I've had in my day. I recommend adding the fried egg on top to balance some of the sweetness. The breakfast sandwich, though, was my favorite, one the best I've had in a while. Not necessarily our favorite lattes in the city (tasted a little watered down/not very sweet), but they were still enjoyable alongside our meals. The real star of the show was our breakfast sandwiches: I opted for the Sprouted Grain EM which came with perfectly cooked eggs, chicken sausage, pickled onions, micro greens, & an aioli. I also splurged an upcharge to add a thick slice of heirloom tomato. Definitely a knife-and-fork type of sandwich thanks to the very generous portions of toppings! This might be one of the most impressive surprises I have stumbled upon while in STL. What a great little gem and a unique menu. We got a seat outside on a beautiful Saturday morning. A friend invited me here and honestly I think this place could do really well in a busier location. The decor has a cool vintage feel, and the service was great.
