We love Ruta! It's actually a regular place that we go to when I come out here to do dinner with the fam. This time my sisters dragged me out for girls night with some of our other mom friends. Friday nights are fun because they have a mariachi band. They sang happy birthday to me and it was fabulous! I don't drink anymore so I had a virgin mojito and it was sooooo yummy. The girls indulged in the margarita tree. We all had our own version of the mixed tacos. For me it was al pastor, carne asada and the shrimp and each was as tasty as the. Next! While the service was great, the food was lackluster and unfortunately also overpriced. I believe the guacamole was $16 and if you look at the portion in the photo, it is quite small. The queso was just melted stringy cheese, not the typical queso you would expect. The filling of the tacos was good but the corn tortilla fell apart immediately, you couldn't even pick it up without it falling apart. One plus was the bottle Coke. One of my few favorite restaurants in town. Went last night with friends for their first visit and it was just ok. The friends don't eat much meat but aside from the fish tacos they ordered (which were very good) not much in the menu fish wise. I had my usual favorite, grilled octopus and it was a disappointment, probably the toughest thing I've ever eaten. The sauces and sides that came with the dish were great as usually but definitely missed the boat on the Pulpo. Really struggled to cut it with the knife. read more

What an experience! We attended a Karol G Bingo hosted by 200 % Latina on this beautiful Sunday on the outside space. The manager greeted us at the door with the welcome cocktail he accommodated me with a non alcoholic drink with no hesitation. The food and service was on point. We enjoyed the chorizo quesadilla and the tacos al pastor..it was very hot outside and they accommodated my mom at the bar as she wasn't feeling well. The staff was attentive and made sure plates were cleared and the tables were kept tidy as well as pouring water constantly. The event made a great call choosing this location. We came here for a birthday meal for family. We made a reservation and were happily seated right away and quickly. We started out with a round of margaritas and an order of chips and salsa. I ordered a delicious barria beef tacos with veggies and salsa. It was delicious. This was the perfect place to spend an early cinco de mayo meal. Always love this place!! It was a super busy night and we stopped in for drinks and quick bites before a show. We told the waitress and she was able to get our nachos and al pastor tacos out in 10 minutes (much appreciated). The Al pastor tacos are delicious, the nachos were also go but a tad too well done but still tasty. The salsa with the complimentary chips and salsa is one of my favorite tasting salsas ever. Beginning to End of a late night dinner experience done just right. :) True traditional Mexican cuisine with flavor like no other. Started with vegetables Empanadas that don't compare to other fried Empanadas you'd make or get off a truck/in restaurants that speciality is just that. Light and crisp with soft delicious center. OMG. Ruta Oaxaca is an amazing Mexican restaurant that's located in Patchogue. We came to celebrate my dad's birthday. We were a group of 18 people. The exterior of the restaurant, reminds me, somehow of Mexican painter Frida Khalo. I love that it's small and cozy. I highly recommend to make reservations, ahead of time; this place gets packed quickly! The manager and staff treated us like royalty. My dad has a free drink, when he visits the restaurant, again! The decor is beautiful. We were told by the staff, that in a few weeks, the outdoor patio will be open! Overall, the food, the service and decor were top notch. Salsas and guacamole are made fresh. The tacos were on point. The shrimp and steak were very flavorful. The highlight of the evening, was the coffee flan! Smooth, creamy and delicious. Very strong coffee flavor, for coffee lovers. Chicken was dry and mole was a little spicy so my toddler dint eat it. Ordered fries for her but she didn't eat it too because they put chili powder. So she just ate white rice. Ambiance was ok. Came in here as a walk-in with no reservations got a table right away! Have heard of them for awhile was my first time stopping in and certainly won't be my last. The food was fresh and delicious, the nachos and Tres Leches were highlights for us. Nice tequila selection as well. And there was a band going around the night we were there (was a friday)! Would make great for a birthday celebration. Other than the band, which weren't really too distracting unless they were right next to you lol, good place for talking. *The best Mexican food I ate in 2024* Friday after work, I had to drop off my wife's car to be repaired. I said let's go to Patchogue for dinner? We're walking towards the typical rotation of restaurants we frequent and passed Ruta Oaxaca Mexican Cuisine. We take a peek inside and we can be seated with no reservation needed. It's a beautiful fall night and we're shown to a table on the back deck. We are given menus and I see the "VIP Old Fashioned". Now I'm an Old Fashioned guy, to see a stepped up Old Fashioned?? Be still my heart.. This drink is made with Patron Extra Anejo and served in a smoker. Fantastic cocktail and highly recommended. The best Mole I ever had was at a Mexican restaurant on the lower east side. The restaurant closed but I always kept it to myself whenever I tried mole from other restaurants. What was served to me last night was the best mole I ever had. The owner came to our table and I told him this mole is incredible. He said the New York Times agrees with me. Their mole dish was written in the Times about their Astoria restaurant. He said the Ruta Oaxaca food is more street food but I'm sensing there is an elegance to each dish. Perfect point would be the Grilled Octopus. The sweet corn purée was incredible and was that passion fruit on the side? The octopus had the perfect char, the entire dish with all the components made this dish IMHO award winning. Seafood enchiladas topped with fresh calamari? This was their nightly special, I loved every bite My wife's taco trio? Simple with the best ingredients We finished our meal and I'm feeling satisfied. We're given dessert menus, the Tres Leche cake is called me. Wow. It's like they had grandma in the kitchen baking. Sooo good! The coffee flan? Another outstanding dish. I've been to the other Mexican restaurants on Main Street. Ruta Oaxaca Mexican Cuisine surpasses every Mexican restaurant on Long Island! We went to Ruta last night as a group of 5. I've been to the Astoria location multiple times and wanted to see how this location compared. It blew me away and I found the experience at this Ruta to be much better!! I got a few La Flaka margs, their version of a skinny margarita. We also all shared tacos - the pollo asado tacos were flavorful with those great pickled onions and the carne asada tacos were juicy and generously filled! I asked for a spicy salsa and it was no joke. It definitely added a nice zing to the tacos. We all had a great time and would have stayed longer but they close a bit earlier than the other restaurants on Main. I would definitely come back here when I'm in the Patchogue area. read more

We LOVED the food, but I have to be honest about the place, we went on a Tuesday because we wanted to have a nice, fun outing during Taco Tuesday! The server was great at the beginning, she was attentive and fast to bring our flight of margaritas, the nachos came after and she forgot the utensils which made it difficult to eat but it was okay, the place wasn't full but sometimes that happens, so we just waited for our utensils and took some cute pics! Later on she kept asking if we wanted to ordered something else, but we were sharing the nachos and we still had all the margaritas to go so we said maybe later. She returned 3 times with the same question and at the end she said "the kitchen is close are you guys gonna order?" Which we considered very rude Now, this has nothing to do with the service but yes with the cleaning of the place, we saw 1 tiny rat run around the patio area and maybe is not on them cause they could be from outside, it just made ua run out of there... We went for our first time last night to celebrate my birthday and had a fantastic night. The staff was wonderful and the food was fantastic. Having been to various parts of Mexico I was looking for something a little more authentic than your typical taco and fajita place. We started with the guacamole - this was the only thing that didn't impress us. It was tasty but clearly made ahead of time and ice cold from the fridge. It was bland like a store bought guac to be honest. The free salsa and chips were better. If they could change to fresh made at the time of order like Besito - it would be a game changer. I would skip the guac next time and go for something else. We also had the complimentary tortilla soups they brought out - these were incredible. We were a little skeptical as to where the meal was going after the bland guacamole but the soup gave us hope that the meal would be tasty - it was that good. We contemplated getting some soup to go with the upcoming snow storm LOL. The flavor was fantastic! My husband had 3 different tacos (chicken, pork and shrimp). All were great but he loved the shrimp. I had the mole chicken enchiladas. Absolutely wonderful and the mole sauce was fantastic. For desserts he got the churro sundae and I got the tres leches - they were wonderful. But the star of the desserts was the coffee flan they brought us for my birthday. That was incredible. Upon entering my boyfriend and I were brought to a table by the hostess who wasn't very friendly or welcoming. She sat us a table in a smaller section of the restaurant by the door. It was very cold and we had a terrible draft. Yes, it is our fault that we didn't ask to move. The same hostess was who refilled our water (not often at all) throughout our meal. She continued to appear unhappy and was not friendly. You can tell she was not happy and did not want to be there. Our waitress came by and took our drink orders. Just water for me and my boyfriend had Mexican soda. His soda took a very long time to come out, and it was just a bottle. There's no prep involved at all and nothing had to be poured. It should've taken as long as it did. It also took a very long time to place our order. When our waitress finally came by, she did apologize for the wait. To start, we had Chori Queso. It was very tasty. This also took a very long time to come out. My boyfriend made a comment that if we were just gonna eat chips and salsa we should've stayed home as we continued to munch on it while waiting for our appetizer to come out. For entrees I decided on Tacos Mixtos. I chose shrimp, chorizo and chicken tacos. Each taco was delicious and unique in flavor. My boyfriend had Alambres Campechanos which he really enjoyed. While ordering our waitress asked us what sides we wanted and listing them off, implying that it was included with our entrees. So we ordered a side each. This was not the case and sides are NOT included with the dishes. I feel this is an unfair practice in order to upcharge on the bill. There was also an upcharge for using a credit card, and this was not stated anywhere. While the food was delicious, service was less to be desired. read more

Came here for LI restaurant week on a Friday night for dinner. Cute little Mexican place packed with tons of color and with a smell of mezcal right as you walk in. The place is on the smaller side so I would recommend a reservation especially for a bigger party. Music was a bit loud in my opinion and made it a little hard to converse and even hear the wait staff. Otherwise service was good. All tables are served with complimentary chips and salsa. I started with the chicken buñuelos, which was alright, good mole sauce but could have been a bit warmer. For the main, I got the three taco sampler, which I appreciated being able to choose any of the three from their diverse menu. I went with the chorizo, birria, and carnitas. Birria was far and away the best, with the chorizo surprisingly being my least favorite, was a bit dry in my opinion. The two best parts of the meal were the dessert and cocktails though. To drink I had the Paloma Aventurera (with tequila) which was tart and refreshing with a delicious poblano salt rim that came in a very cute vase like cup. And for dessert we got the tres leches and the coffee flan, both of which were exceptional, but I will say the cake was a little denser than typical so a purist might have some qualms. Although I enjoyed the meal, without the deal for restaurant week, prices seem a little on the high side for what you get, and I'd be a little reluctant to come back too frequently. But, I would like to try more of their menu still. Everything was "good" but didn't quite get all the way to "great". Parking can be a little crazy around patchogue. You can take your chances parking on the street, but I'd seek out one of the nearby municipal lots and walking a block or two to ease your troubled mind. read more

The wife and I went here for restaurant week and when we got there at 7:30 our waitress said " restaurant week" menus end at 7... we were bummed but she proceeded to ask the manager. The manager came over and he honored the restaurant week menu for us.. what a great thing.. we made up for it with our drinks! We had the seafood empanadas which were very good... my wife ordered the quesadilla with shrimp but she received shrimp tacos and didn't realize that it wasn't her order until she was 1.5 tacos in. Obviously she loved it so we didn't say anything. I had something similar to fajitas.. it came with flour tortillas.
