It was a breezy Thursday afternoon. My friend text messaged me "lets have lunch." Basically, that was my cue to find an affordable and local place. Several messages later we decided on Rutabegorz for the reasons that: (1) sandwiches seemed like a good idea at the time and (2) we've never been and were definitely game on trying something new. Rutabegorz is a quaint little spot smack-dab in the heart of downtown Fullerton. Parking wasn't an issue since we came on a weekday but it was lunchtime so we were dreading the hustle and bustle. As soon as I walked in I immediately felt claustrophobic. The entrance is pretty narrow. There's a small dining area to the left and when you turn to the right it leads to another small dining area which is connected to another dining area that's more spacious. There's also an outside patio if you prefer to eat outdoors. As soon as we sat down our server brought us these super cute menus. They reminded me of coloring books. Totally felt nostalgic and dorky at that moment and wanted crayons but I restrained myself. The menu was pretty thick! Was not expecting a myriad selection of salads, sandwiches, specials, etc. My friend and I shared the hummus appetizer. I guess they had a monthly special going on where the dip is 43 cents! Wow! We chose to upgrade from chips to pita bread which was like an additional 50 cents. No biggie. It was still less than a $1. I'm not complaining! The hummus wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. I preferred to have a more bolder taste--either more cumin or garlic--seemed a bit bland. Based on several Yelp reviews, The Walnut that Kissed the Chicken Salad Sandwich on squaw bread won my friend's heart and so he decided to order it. I wanted the chicken salad sandwich too but since he was getting it I figured I'd get a different sandwich and we would trade halves--get the best of both worlds. I chose their seasonal special which was the Turkey Cranberry Bliss on squaw bread. The sandwiches came with a small side of pasta salad and a pickle. The sandwiches are pretty big, at least for me. The Turkey Cranberry was fair. Kinda messy. I've had a similar concoction but instead of turkey it was chopped pieces of chicken, which I actually prefer. I do like how the cranberry sauce gave it that added tangy-sweet flavor. Without it, it would've been a fail. As for the chicken salad sandwich it was also fair. It seemed under-seasoned. I do like the crunch factor but that was basically it. This too was a bit messy. I normally don't feel so full after eating a sandwich but that day I was stuffed! They're pretty generous with the portions. No lie. Overall the experience was average. I don't plan on rushing back here any time soon but they do offer so many dishes that I would consider coming back. I noticed a lot of the diners around us ordered salads. The bowls were huge! I think next time I'll order the Chinese Chicken Salad or the Garlic Chicken Salad. read more

Went to dine in today and then ordered a TO-Go little ceaser salad and sandwhich w the bag triple knotted. Drove all the way home to find out there was no dressing. SO SAD! Been twice so far, once was a YUMMY TIME and the second was a MMM time. MEANING: It's a hit or miss. I've had the curried honey mustard chicken wrap, which was delicious (but too many peanuts, so ask to omit if you don't want peanuts stuck in your teeth), and I left wondering when I'd be back again. The second time I went, I got the hard boiled egg sandwich, which was a miss because all the egg kept falling out, it was too deconstructed, and MESSY! I ended up eating my sandwich with a fork.... BUT. They had a daily special dip that came with celery and carrot sticks.. that ish was GOOOD. We kept eating that instead of our main dishes... The dip was cream cheese LOADED with yumyums like dried cranberries, nuts,... and o gosh I can't remember what else. Verde Chicken Enchiladas: really good! We first discovered Rutabegorz during our college years back in the 80's. We were poor college kids and our big treat was eating at Rutabegorz. Fast forward to present day and I still like coming here from time to time because it does bring you back to the time when life was just starting out. Two things have remained constant from then to now - still strong in love with my husband (who was my new boyfriend back in college) and the quality of food at Rutabegorz! ;) Love the peasant mushrooms - oh those cheese breads are so good too that come with this entree. I love they still have the coffee w/ ice cream drinks. Every time I eat here, I wonder why I don't eat here more often! The food is healthy and well priced for the serving sizes. One dish can easily be shared by 2 hungry adults. This place is even better than it was way back when I was in high school! Great veggie food (plus other stuff for your meat-eating friends), groovy atmosphere, right in downtown Fullerton. The restaurant is really big - in two historic Fullerton buildings - and they have a really nice patio. You can sit in shade or sun, and there are fans to keep the air moving. Rutabegorz is an institution in the best way. I go there whenever I'm in town, for coffee drinks, lunch, or dessert. I have been here a couple of times. The food is delicious, the portions are hefty, and the service more often than not STINKS. I had no problem shorting the tip...tips are earned not handed out like biscuits. If I dont get a free lunch neither does the restaurant. Glad I got that out of the way. I had the falafel wrap and it was delicious to the max. They have this promotional going on right now 40cents for bomb ass chips and salsa, we ordered two. I should have gotten the Chicken Enchilada!!!! What I got was pretty good don't get me wrong. It was the stuffed mushrooms. It was steaming hot when it came out on a bed of rice pilaf (I should have ordered brown rice...do they have brown rice?) and topped with four slices of wheat toast with cheese on them! it was good but I think I was craving something saltier that day. The place itself is sooo charming! Like you're eating at someone's home. Very cozy very down to earth...I don't know about the seat yourself part but it's all good! The appearance of the outside and inside is cute, reminds me of a small house. There's a lot more seating inside than what appears to be. For appetizers we got the chips with hummus, it was ok. We had a lot more hummus leftover with the amount of chips given. My bf and I got 1/2 sandwich combo with a cup of soup, both for $9.95. I got the Ham sandwich that came with ham, lettuce, tomato, cheese, & optional onion. My bf got the sandwich that came with the same ingredients. Not only do the sandwiches come with soup, but also a small macaroni salad and piece of fruit on the side. Good amount of food for close to $10. Our total bill came to about $30. I did enjoy the comfy atmosphere, good service, but I just thought the food was average, hence my three stars. One star for the cool menu. One star for the dip of the month at the very appealing price of $1. One star for having a mural of John Lennon on the wall. Unfortunately, this restaurant gets no more stars from me because for the first time in a VERY long time, I could not eat more than half of my food. I had one of the specialty sandwiches - pepperoni, cream cheese onions and olives. It SOUNDED good, or at the very least, interesting. But the taste of it was a whoooole different story. I managed to eat half before my stomach felt queasy from all the cream cheese. My boyfriend's enchiladas were better, but after a couple of bites, even THAT started tasting weird. Maybe it was an off night. I've been here before, and while the food wasn't bad, it wasn't memorable either. Good food (they give you enough for at least two meals), and there is always a beer on special. Usually about 2 dollars I think, but they choose good beers to sell (they put things like Newcastle or Bootleggers on special, not Bud Light). The menu is overwhelmingly large; I usually get a wrap or a sandwich. I think their food would be better if they reduced the menu; not everything is great, and I think it would behoove them to focus on making fewer things at better quality. This place is a little more than 3 stars. I agree with a Yelper below who can't figure out if they like this place or not. There's so much to choose from, so each time I come here, I order something different until I find that one dish that I'll want to order again and again. So far, I've only tried wraps and maybe that's where I'm going wrong -- I always forget that wraps are cold, but when I read the description, I forget and think I'll be getting something hot. I've tried the Falafel, BBQ Fiesta and Curry Chicken wrap. Out of the 3, I like the Curry Chicken wrap the best. My boyfriend really loves the tuna sandwich and gets it every time. He swears by it. I love the 40 cent appetizers they have that changes monthly. Even if it doesn't sound good, it's only 40 cents, so how can you not try it? We've always liked it though. I don't know if they always have a random ridiculously deal, but they had $1 pumpkin beer-- and it was really good! And they had 46c hummus and chips, which was not great, but a steal for 46 cents. I ended up getting a salad which came in a ridiculously large bowl, that I am currently enjoying the leftovers for dinner as well.
