I have only tried their salads, but my favorite is their Summer Salad. Comes with lettuce, turkey, bleu cheese, caramelized walnuts, mandarin oranges, cranberries and carrots. Vegetarians rejoice! This place has a crap ton of choices for you... Also has some excellent non-vegetarian choices...wait, that would be regular dishes I guess. lol. ;) The menu is expansive. You might need to take a minute or two just to look over the choices. The portions for the salads and other dishes are quite large. Be ready to take some food home or share with a friend. The food is excellent! I had the Asian chicken salad with extra walnuts and cheese (blue?) I forget...But the taste was great! Thanks fellow yelpers for the recommendation! When I want to make my friends love me I casually mention we should go here for dinner. How do you top 1 dollar specials on pine nut hummus dip and kick ass beers? You can get a bottle of Fat Tire for five bucks, that's alright I guess but their serious speciality is FOOD and LOTS of it. My favorite dish hands down is their version of Mu-Shu chicken. Oh it's totally Americanized and all but so fresh and freaking good. I always tell myself I won't eat the whole thing and I polish it off. Their squash dish is also nuts too. Then there is something my man gets ALWAYS which is their chicken enchillada plate. It's seriously so heavenly and rich he can't finish it but DAMN their beans are awesome! I took 6 friends here and they all loved it. Each of us got something totally different and huge but we all mowed it down! A great place with a nice "fresh" vibe, what's not to love. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE :] The food at Rutabegorz is fresh and very tasteful. The price may seem like a lot but I think you get your moneys worth. Prices run on average any where from $10-$15 a person. I go for their Chicken & Avocado Salad or the Chinese Chicken Salad. If you're not a fan of salads they do have other options. Rutabegorz has such a fond place in my heart, and my mom has been coming here since the 80's. I love all the coffee items from here, I swear when I drink the chai tea it warms my soul!!! The overall look of this restaurant always makes me smile, from the paintings on the wall to the small intimate table setting. Anything and everything is good here, and they always have a 40 cent appetizer special that is always worth tasting. Don't be scared to try any of the vegetarian options here as well, their entrees are always delicious, plentiful and filling. Oh Rutabegorz, I love you. It's hard to judge this place because I I think it depends more on what you order. I've been here two times, and I don't think that the pasta dishes or enchiladas are very good. They're not terrible, but it's just way too salty, Americanized, and just not that great. However, the second time I had the salad and soup. The soup wasn't that great, to be honest, too thick and salty. But the salad was very good. It seems like the salads and sandwiches here are probably your best bet, and I do appreciate how fresh and extensive the menu is and how they try to have healthy choices. Overall, a solid choice for certain items. Beware of the drinks though, they are not very good. read more

Oh, Ruta's... I've been going here for roughly 6 years, and have never had a bad experience. I'm the only vegetarian amongst my friends, but we all end up satisfied here. I've been lucky enough to have a frequent every location, and they are all pretty much the same. Fullerton is my current spot. The menu is crazy long, you can find pretty much whatever your craving somewhere. The monthly 1 dollar specials are enticing, and are such a great way of getting you hooked on different items. I learned to love the black bean hummus and the veggie chili from the dollar specials. I use to have a tradition with a friend that we would go over for cherry cider and brownie sundaes whenever it rained. Portions are generous and affordable. Service is casual and efficient. Next door is the world's most dangerous playground. I recommend exploring it after a sober lunch at Ruta's rather then a sloshy nite in the rest of d.t.f. This place is the best!!! I haven't tried anything here I didn't like! I recommend the "Chicken that Kissed the Walnut" Sandwich! It is such a yummy sandwich! It is basically a chicken salad sandwich with nuts. The squaw bread compliments it so well. If you are looking to get less carbs, try the Southwest Quinoa Bowl. It is so good. Quinoa is a carb "technically" but its good for you. It has black beans, salsa, avocado, corn and cheese! Yum! Those are my two go-to meals when I eat there, but you won't be disappointed with anything. Also, the dessert that I love there is there coconut chocolate bar! Honestly.. HONESTLY. This place isn't thaaat good. Sure, for a while, I was in the Fog of Hype - everyone told me this place was so delicious, so good, so healthy. And so I really believed for myself that this place was as good and delicious as everyone kept telling me it was. But on average? Their dishes can be hit or miss. Yes, everything is healthy, I will vouch for that. But let's get mathematical. Of the 3 times I've been here, I've ordered 7 items (It's disgusting but sometimes I DO share..). Only TWO of those items were good. One of them is their house hummus which shouldn't count as an item but I have to throw it in there otherwise we're left with the Strawberry Summer Salad and.. how do you mess up a salad? That's LESS than ONE good dish per visit.. and you're only supposed to order one dish per visit. The chance that I'll enjoy my food in my next visit is 28%. Pretty sad if you ask me. Also, the three times I've been here the service has been horribly slow. I don't know guys; I'm willing to give it another shot but I've had their wraps, their soups, their salads, their pastas.. even their white and red wines. Want to know what is my biggest gripe about Rutabegorz? That I didn't discover it sooner!! Amazing fresh salads and sandwiches. My goal is to try everything on the menu. HUGE portions. It's a seat yourself kind of place, true. It is in a small building that if you drive to fast you would miss. I love that it is within walking distance to my house. Even more of a reason to take a quick stroll there and have some great food! Service can sometimes be a little slow but you get a HUGE cup of your beverage of choice. I almost drove right by it thinking it was a house instead of a restaurant. lol We stood in line to be seated for 5 minutes before someone alerted to the message on the wall that read "SEAT YOURSELF." Big duhr to us. Very eclectic menu with an assortment of different types of food. Anything from bagels to grilled cheese to fondu. The portions are gi-normous so come with a big appetite. Seriously. I'm 25 and felt kinda old with this hipster crowd. I'm assuming that because it's so close to cal state fullerton- it's mostly a college crowd....the artsy college crowd. There's even a mona lisa mirror in the bathroom. I have always loved Ruta's. The Fullerton location has always been my favorite. The salads are great. I love the Thai dressing as well as their soups and chili. They have a great array of non-alcoholic beverages and non-meat based meals which i appreciate. Also love their cheesecake! They do lose a star because the service can definitely be improved. There have been handful of good servers there since I have been going but it's usually hit or miss and when you find one of the good ones, make sure you get their section every time you go! I have been a patron of Rutabegorz since 1995 and the only complaint I really have had is that I wish I had padded seats and that some tables are too close. Though, honestly... Ah, Rutabegorz, I've been dragged to you so many times when I feel like something else, that may be clouding my review. Overall, the food is decent to good. It is rather homemade-y, and I'm not a huge fan of that. I love eating out and having well put together restaurant food. The service is generally slow and the waiters are unhelpful and inattentive. I'd call this place a lunch place, and as that, it is very good. Salads, sandwiches, wraps are good here and good lunch foods. They always have some good specials when it comes to a small appetizer for less than a buck, as well as a special cheap beer. I believe this place is one that really polarizes based on individual tastes, life experiences, and your view of comfort food and if you haven't been here before, you need to try it and either love it or say, "it's just ok." What I liked about Rutabegorz: - $0.43 dine-in special appetizers. I had the black bean hummus with tortilla chips and for that price, I can not complain. They give you a pretty good amount. - The decor is really cute, first come first serve seating. - If you're on a budget, coming here to split a meal with a friend is not a problem at all.. the portions are HUGE. What I got: - Italiano salad: for $10 you feed a family of 5 and everyone could have a side salad. For the price its great but they really do load on the cheese. Tons of it. - Shrimp Alfredo - Turkey Bacon Mac & Cheese: Super greasy, there was just a pool of bacon and cheese oil left at the bottom of the bowl. Can't complain for the price so I guess its convenient that it is right by college town so if you're looking for cheap food and lots of it, Rutabegorz is the place to go. But if you are looking for better tasting food... there are most definitely tons of better choices to choose from all around Downtown Fullerton. read more

I'm stingy with the five star rating but this place deserves it. My BF took me to dinner here the other night. I wasn't sure what to expect because the name is a little earthy. I thought it was more for the granola loving bunch. I'm sure it is. But it's also for the average Joe too. We had the seasonal garlic chicken salad with all those yummy fixings... Strawberries almonds feta etc. The salad was incredible! It's huge and you can certainly share it. But we weren't in a sharing mood. We got our own garlic chicken salads! We also got the $.45 special which was jalapeno cream cheese and chips. Yum! We also got a cup of the cockie leeky soup. I don't even know what was in it but I devoured it. We washed all this down with some ice cold hard apple ciders. The Decour and historic building are worth noting as well. It's in like 100-year-old building with different rooms and stairwells. This is a really nice place to come if you are craving something fresh. Super small inside however I love the coziness. They even have their own garden. The food is pretty good too. I usually get a wrap or a salad and I have never been disappointed. Service is good too. I try to always sit outside just because you have a little more elbow room than on the inside. The crepes are pretty good. The vegetarian lasagna is tasty. And my friend had an enchilada that she loved. The ambiance is wonderful; there's amazing local artwork on the walls, and it's just cozy inside. The best thing at Rutabegorz is their $1 monthly deal. It's really fun. Whatever their special is that month, normally an appetizer, you can get it for a buck. It's pretty tasty, too. The downside of Rutabegorz is probably the price. I think it's a bit pricey for what you get. Comparable to like the Olive Garden prices, but you don't get a salad, soup, or bread. Ruta's has been one of my favorite spots throughout the past 10 years. The menu is beyond huge, and includes mostly vegetarian dishes. It is a very laid-back, relaxed place; you seat yourself, your wait staff generally falls into the hippie/art crowd and the food is all about being fresh. It is a great change of pace from the new/trendy additions to the Fullerton crowd (ie, the Commonwealth, Slide Bar, etc.) I like that it is all about good food and good people, and we can keep the yippies in the other parts of downtown. My favorite dishes are the salads. They are huge, fresh and full of favor. I highly suggest the curry or the thai dressing. The tuna sandwich is one of the best in Orange County. They also have $1 specials (usually some sort of dip) that make you feel like you are a common thief for only paying a buck for it. Also, the Fullerton Ruta's has a great patio, but it is hardly ever open. If it is open during your visit, you need to sit on it! read more

Came here in a morning with my girlfriend for a quick brunch, which worked out well as we arrived just before the crowd did before 11AM. We each ordered a half sandwich and cup of soup, and added the $0.41 appetizer of hummus and chips, which was awesome. The restaurant feels very homey and definitely has awesome service. Our server was very polite and came by at the right times to check up on us frequently. I ordered a Turkey sandwich with the cockie leeky soup. The sandwich was well prepared with fresh tomatoes, plenty of fresh green lettuce, a dash of mayonnaise and mustard and tasted great. The jalapeno cream cheese went very well with the chips, and for $0.41 you can't beat it! Parking is on the street and nearby areas, so there may be a small walk sometimes. But then again, this is in downtown Fullerton area, with plenty of other dining locations nearby. A wonderful experience and great food! LIKE LIKE LIKE! Three stars all based on the wonderful menu that hasn't changed in a decade. I have been here many, many times. Primarily due to the great selection of vegetarian options, and overall health-factor. The menu is huge with virtually anything your belly could desire! Oh, and it's got a little wine to wash it all down. "So why not four or five stars," you ask? Because the service is downright crappy. Slow service that is not redeemed by any sort of cheeriness. These folks are here to toss you your food and not come back until they are ready to toss the check your way. For example, on my last visit, they did this so fast that they never came back with a bill to charge for our second glass of wine, of which we had to catch the waiter to bring. Let's take a quick look at the pros and cons of Rutabegorz: Pros: A vast and delicious array of things to choose from, many vegetarian/vegan friendly items, huge portions, friendly staff, home-like atmosphere Cons: Too difficult to choose what you want to eat As you can see, I can't think of a single disappointing thing about them. My two favorite things to order currently are the Garlic Chicken Pasta and Chicken Cacciatore. Like I said, the menu is large so I'm still finding new things that I like and I can't wait to try something different next time...if I'm actually feeling adventerous. Even if you're not in the immediate Fullerton area, this is a place worth traveling a little ways to. Or, you could always go to the location in Santa Ana. UPDATE: On my most recent visit, I decided to switch it up a bit by trying the veggie twocos...oh my word! I almost couldn't find the corn tortillas when they came out. Also, they were delicious. The spot: Rutabegorz is tucked away in Downtown Fullerton, walking distance from Fullerton College. You seat yourself upon entry at any of their unqiue/homey tables. Great for long talks (that you will be inclined to have since service can be slow). The service: -1 star for service. Service can be hit or miss. Last time I was there I had to look for a server to cash out our check after waiting for over 20 minutes without being helped- and couldn't find one. I eventually saw one lingering near the back employees-only area and snagged him. Regardless of the speed of service, the servers do know the (very long) menu. The food: +1 Star for Portion Size, -1 Star for borderline inedible cheesiness (and I love cheese, but come now...) . If an item has cheese, it has CHEESE. You will not be able to finish the nachos (even with a few friends helping). The veggie enchiladas at this location cannot hold a candle to the ones served at the Orange Circle location. The veggie enchiladas I ordered here had only a couple (literally) shreded carrot pieces that looked like they were lost, and LOTS of cheese. I let the waitress know that my veggie enchiladas lacked any veggies and she basically said tough luck (I did complain at cashing out and they credited my dish). I am a fan of the Peasant Mushrooms and their salads are delicious. They don't give any heartache when asking to take out meat from the salads. The cost: The prices are good for what you get- expect to spend about 15 bucks each. read more

Seeing as I've lived in Fullerton my entire life, this is definitely one of my favorite restaurants throughout the whole city. However, this isn't without caveats (caveats that may or may not be a bad thing). Both of these caveats apply to the Tustin and Orange locations as well. 1. The food is usually not spiced up. By this, I mean there usually isn't a great deal of pepper or anything that would conjure up stomach problems. This is a good thing for some people (those who have stomach issues, of which I know a great many) but not so awesome for someone like me who LOVES spiced (and spicy) food. Then there are those people who just don't understand that fact and take it as being so-so food. It's easy to remedy for me: just pile on some black or red pepper and we're good to go. 2. There is about a 50/50 chance that you might get only so-so service. This isn't entirely the fault of the servers as the restaurant is usually packed anyway. However, sometimes they run the servers too thin and you end up having to wait what feels like ages to get what you need. However, if you get the really talented servers, the restaurant is always a win-win situation. If you like soup, you cannot lose with either their Cocky Leaky or Chicken & Rice. Add some pepper to both of these and they are a really good, healthy choice for lunch or dinner. And both are my favorite foods from the restaurant. read more

I came on a Saturday afternoon. A nice twist to a sandwich/salad/cafe: an almost all-wooden door with a few slits of glass that one must open to enter. Staff is friendly; I enjoyed the open seating -- it allowed me to check out the painted artwork on the walls. Garlic chicken on squaw sandwich: toasted squaw, melted cheese, avocado, tomato, lettuce were all great; chicken, however, was a little dry. I enjoyed the side of honeydew, pickle, and potato salad, too. Cafe mocha taste had a solid balance of espresso and chocolate; hot enough to force me to drink it slowly, and therefore enjoy it thoroughly. I've been going to Ruta's for many years, and the quality and service are always consistent. It's also located in a cute historic house, and decorated with fun, funky colors and murals. They have AMAZING salads! If you are a salad fan, this is your mecca. They are huge, and filled with fresh ingredients, and tasty dressings. If you're not into leafy greens, no problem! The menu here is huge, so there is sure to be something to interest you. The prices are very fair, and the portions are large. The only thing I have found they don't do well, are mixed drinks. Fantastic place! The food is DELICIOUS! Think of healthy mixed with Latin and old fashion Dinner dishes. The place itself is quite amazing, with a Historical building, well decorated. The service is good, and the food, again, DELICIOUS! We first started with the Artichoke Dip, very flavorful and clean, tasting artichokes with every scoop of the tortilla chip! We then had the Garlic Chicken Pasta and the Seafood Enchiladas: WOW! The plates are not huge, but big enough (we had to take to-go boxes since we got full with the Artichoke Dip.) I had the Pasta dish and everything was excellent: the pasta, chicken amount and the Garlic Bread. My Brother had the Enchiladas and they were AMAZING! The food was served quickly and very hot (careful!) I've comeback here because it has fantastic food, great prices and its two blocks from my new job. I HIGHLY recommend it! Enjoy!... read more

I consider this place somewhat of a hidden gem when I'm in the OC! Their salads have this great balance of quantity + quality, plus it's pretty affordable in my opinion. I've also tried the veggie lasagna and the homemade flavor is pretty spot on. Think Anton Ego in 'Ratatouille' the movie.. (OK, slight exaggeration, but still- good!) Service is great.
