Wonderful! A tucked-away, reasonably-priced, friendly local spot. I asked for a very short cut, "just long enough so I don't look bald". I hoped I wouldn't end up with razor divots where my scalp showed -- a common occurrence at other barbers. I've been going to this place many times pre-covid and have always been a fan, but not anymore... This place is not exactly covid friendly. The hairdressers wear their masks when attending to customers, but not when they are idling. Given how confined the space is and how limited the ventilation is, it is a little startling. They also allow more than one customer at a time, which made it even more worrisome. read more

This place did a terrible job cutting my 2 y/o sons hair. He did not cry or whine. It was all choppy with straight cuts in the front and an odd layered look in the back giving him a lopsided head. It wasn't busy on a Thursday afternoon so even though we were a walk in, we didn't have to wait. Parking wasn't hard, we got a spot right outside the shop. I thought for some reason this might be a kids only salon after reading Yelp reviews, maybe because of the pricing but I think the $18 price is for all cuts. I brought my toddler in and was tempted to get a trim myself! She was quick and listened really well to how we wanted our son's hair cut. I don't think we were there longer than 15-20 minutes. His cut was short and neat which is great because his hair grows so fast. We were happy with it! I'd come back if we lived in the area. read more

This place is a great deal! I wasn't expecting much for $17, but the lady did a great job with long layers. She was fast and checked both sides to make sure the length was even. Just a heads up - they are cash only! Updated 2/25/16: 3 years later, the price has gone up to $18 and they're still the best deal around. Make an appointment by phone if you don't want to wait in the evenings or on Saturday. We had a better experience and a better cut with a friendly stylist in the South Bay, but I wasn't willing to hoof it all the way down there just for a haircut. We were pretty sad to say goodbye to our old standby because of the price increase in kid's cuts. Plus tip, $30 for a kid's buzz cut is way out of our price range. We have two kids who have freakishly fast growing hair. At that price, we seriously considered raising long-haired hippies. And I hate hippies. I entered, "cheap" and "kid's haircuts" into the search function on Yelp and found S&E. We had been holding off for so long, our kid's hair resembled the Caddyshack gopher, so we ran over after school. There were two people ahead of us, and one already in the chair. She gave us an estimate of 30 minutes, which was pretty accurate. Before long, my son was sitting on the booster seat and getting coiffed. Twenty minutes later, he was done. Erica gave him a stellar cut with four different electric razors and took time to really check her work, just like he was a grown-up customer. It was awesome. And it was $17. Sweeeeet. read more

My place for haircuts. I'm a guy, usually ask for the business man's haircut or keep it a little longer. I'm very particular and in the past have made stylist work for up to an hour before I'm happy, or go home and fix it myself. If I only get a haircut every 3 months, I want it to be perfect. I tried this place originally because it's right up the street from me, it's a good price and yelpers love it. It was amazing. She's faster than anyone I've gone to before, gets the cut exactly how I like it on the first or second go, is cheap and usually has openings whenever I need. I took my two-year-old daughter to S & E to get her first-ever haircut. I was a bit apprehensive about how she might behave. Would she melt down? Would it be a disaster? It was great! Erica (the stylist) was wonderful, and my toddler got the perfect sweet haircut. Best of all, she had fun and wasn't scared. We'll definitely be going back. As a noob here in SF, and a rather metro kind of guy, it was only a short matter of time before a haircut would become a high priority. I'm picky about who touches me to begin with, let alone granting a temporary license to alter my appearance, so it was only by strong recommendation that I gave S & E a try. The most recent reviews are a little outdated, current rates for a cut are $16, which still sounds a right bargain compared to the what I've heard elsewhere around town. And the shop will gladly accept your money so long as it's cash or local check; they do NOT take credit. I stopped in on a weekday afternoon and it wasn't busy at all, meaning no wait. Having read the credit card bit here on Yelp, and that being my primary payment method, my Visa was all that hitchhiked inside my pocket. Good thing I asked before sitting down! The interesting thing was, this very sweet woman who was working offered to cut my hair anyway, even though I didn't have sufficient payment, trusting me to go get cash afterward and come back. Wow. I ran to an ATM first anyway and came right back. Other reviews have said it was a no-nonsense, no chit-chat kind of place, but she was very pleasant with me--not overly talkative, but not eerily silent either. Hair stylists often make curious or disturbing faces as they evoke their art, so unless they talk a little to distract, they're likely just creeping me out. Bottom line: service was excellent, they really went above and beyond. my haircut was decent; a little too short, but for a first-time cut on a first-time client, it wasn't bad at all. It doesn't match what my previous stylist of 8.5 years would do, but because other people seem to like it, I'll be heading back for sure. read more

The lady who cut my daughter's hair was quite nice and did a good job of keeping my daughter calm. However the cut itself was terribly done. Brash with the scissors and cut my daughters bangs with one fast and straight cut. It was done before we could talk about it! And now she has blunt bangs that are way to short. I paid the $21 dollars posted on the window which I'm pretty sure is for an adult cut. That's not a lot of money overall, it's just that the haircut we got was probably only worth $5. I guess I should be writing this review on my actual barber but I can't really do that on here. the first problem was that the world famous Erica wasn't here the day I came in. This being the first time I've ever been to this shop to cut my hair, I didn't think the rest of the talent would be so bad. For the past 3 years, I've been going to Kelly's hair cut in north beach. Unfortunately, I found out she has retired at the end of 2013 and the search now starts to find another cheap and effective hair cut about once every 4 weeks. Well I found this place on my phone, close to my house, and figured what the hell, let's give it a shot. (Famous last words). After a 45 min wait on a Sunday afternoon I finally took my seat in the last seat away from the door and the short haired lady prepared to cut my hair. I told her "number 2 on the sides and just clip the tips on top". Unfortunately, she did not believe I wanted my sides short. She put the #2 guard on her clippers (mind you the #2 was hand written so who knows if it's legit) and then would pull the clippers away from my head on each brush through my hair. I was waiting for her to get closer and closer to my head, but nope. After 40 minutes in the chair I begged and pleaded to have her cut it shorter, heck even put on her #1 guard. But nope she still refused and said "that's too short". Anyway, I still need a cheap cut next month (or maybe sooner since I couldn't get the cut I wanted), so I will try and come when Erica is around, but otherwise the other folks cutting hair here really have no clue what they're doing. I have been going here for about a year. I have long hair, shoulder length. I usually get my hair cut by Melissa. She does a great job at a price that can not be beat. You really need to tip considering what this cut would cost elsewhere. Some times I call ahead but even if I don't I usually wait 10 or 15 minutes. read more

I wish I could give negative rating here. My toddler had a horrible experience at this place. Keeping 2 toys don't make the place kid friendly. The hair cutter had zero patience to cut my babies hair, the million faces she made and sighs she was giving everytime he moved. She even ended him giving a cut on top of his ear n it was bleeding. Towards the end I just ignored the fit n finish of my child's hair n preferred to leave. I so regret taking him there. read more

I felt compelled to write a review for parents looking for children's haircuts. We come all the way here from Noe Valley for our near-teen boys. It is worth the drive as it is the only place both children have liked after many tries at other salons and barbers. Not only does S&E do great short and medium-length cuts, but they are quick and reasonably priced. We have tried the other salon in that neighborhood that specializes in children's cuts, but had very varied results there. read more

Bargain cut. At the risk of exposing myself as completely uncool, I went here, and liked it. I have gone to many fancy salons (I was forced to go by members of the opposite sex who were trying to force coolness upon me) and I always left feeling totally ripped off, and my hair basically looking the same as any other time. Then again, I do like to people watch, and a fancy hair salon is one of the best - nothing like getting your haircut by a guy in lace-up pants, or a hairwash girl that is busting so much attitude you'd think she was an A-list celeb. F that. So, a quick stroll down to S&E, 15 minutes in the chair, $14 + tip, and I have a great haircut. (and my wife liked the cut, too) read more

I was looking for a reasonable priced salon for my 8 year old son (quite a tough feat in my neighborhood!). At 6pm we drove by & found parking (wow!) and there were two men in front of us. We decided to wait and hope this won't take too long. It didn't - and the two guys haircuts looked good. My kid got a GREAT cut and he commented how nice she was (we don't know her name). To top it off, she offered him candy at the end of the cut. Not a lollipop or bite sized candy - a full on candy bar. That doesn't influence my star giving, but it was a nice touch for her because he will always remind me to go back to the lady with the candy! Not bad for $16... read more

Walked in and only had to wait about 10 minutes to get a cut...two things I love about this place: it didnt take long to get a cut (maybe 15 minutes of total cutting time, not bad for a men's haircut), and the attention to detail given during that time...great haircut and I am thrilled it is in my neighbourhood! read more
