Not sure what those 2014 reviewers are complaining about, I had 2 great experiences with S&K. They will be my first and probably only call when I am ready for my next major home improvement project. I hired S&K Roofing, Siding, and Windows for two separate major jobs in 2015 (replacement of all 16 windows in my house, then later replacement of a sliding glass patio door) and their work was outstanding both times. For comparison, in the last 6 years, I have hired Brothers Services for 2 major jobs (good work but expensive), Smith & Sons for 1 major job (good work on a basement finishing), and 2 other small-time local contractors who shall not be named or recommended... Sales rep Jack Leons was courteous, PROMPT, ACCURATE, and HONEST. His "ballpark guesses" were ready within a day or two via email, and were within $5-$10 of the final, formal estimate (which arrived about a week later both by email and snail mail) both for the 16 window project and the sliding glass door project. When I contacted Jack for an estimate on a deck teardown&replacement, he was upfront and honest and told me that since S&K relies on subcontractors for decks, the price would probably be out of my budget. I persisted and requested the estimate anyway, which did turn out to be above my budget, but major kudos to Jack and S&K for not trying to pressure me into a sale that was beyond my budget. Jack was also very helpful in explaining the product line at their showroom. I had done rather extensive research before contacting S&K and viewing their product line, and was blown away by the value and quality. Prices for a near-top-of-the-line window worked out to be several thousand $$ less than Brother's Services estimate (using Owens Corning brand windows), and that was including installation and removal of the old window. S&K's price for the sliding glass door worked out to be about $600 less than I paid Brother's Service (for an Owens Corning sliding glass door) on a different part of the house, and I got a significantly lighter and more energy efficient door to boot! S&K prefers to use "BF Rich" company windows and glass doors - which I had never previously heard of. Energy efficiency and value were my two top choices, and my wife loved the double-hung glass, Easy-Clean exterior coating (basically just spray it with a hose and you're done), night latches, option of opening the top sash (small children on 2nd floor, safer to get a breeze through the upper piece of glass), and easy-open (our previous builder-grade windows felt like doing a bicep curl). The BF Rich windows and doors that S&K uses beat the Energy Star minimums by a landslide, and the ones I bought weren't even the top of the BF Rich product line! Installation was a day and a half job for 16 windows, including removal of the old windows and new rain gutters etc, not a mark to be found anywhere on my siding, and a year and a half later, not a draft or drop of water has come through any of the windows or sliding glass door (previously had major drafts and 5 of 16 windows leaked through the sills during heavy rains). The sliding door was done in a single day. Crews were experienced, knowledgeable, polite, and efficient, and took great pains to avoid damage to the interior and yard of my house. A few months after installation, my wife noticed a torn screen on one window, and another window's sealed argon-gas pane leaked out (manufacturing defect. S&K drove out to my house and re-screened the screen in the van while we waited, no questions asked. For the sealed glass unit, S&K had a new pane manufactured (mine are oddly sized, requiring custom made glass), and as soon as S&K received the pane they drove it out to my house a second time and swapped the defective one, no questions asked! In summary, S&K has been my favorite contractor in the 6 years I have spent remodeling my house, and they will be my first and probably only call to replace my rotting front door & frame. To compare to the below reviews, I don't see any interior remodeling services (like finishing a basement) advertised on S&K's web site, so perhaps that service has been discontinued. S&K is a contracting company that focuses on EXTERIOR jobs, so even if they do interior jobs, I'd expect the headache that comes with subcontractors...There are plenty of cheaper contractors in MD, but you get what you pay for...S&K's work for me has been on par with Brother's Services, but significantly cheaper, and I am extremely pleased with the product line S&K recommends, their sales process, installation process, and follow-up care. read more

Somebody told me today that people never leave positive reviews. They only go online to complain when they are wronged. So I thought to myself, who have I been happy dealing with? S&K was the first company that came to mind. So here goes... It started with an in-home salesman from Atlantic Remodeling who gave me the high-pressure pitch a little over a year ago. My experience with Atlantic was terrible, involving shady, high-pressure sales tactics. If any salesman insists that your wife has to be there for you to get information about a potential purchase, run! I called S&K after my grandfather recommended them and Don came out and showed me specifically what work would be done. He measured the roof and showed me how they could improve the ventilation in the attic and improve the cricket on my chimney. We went into the attic and he looked at the plywood for rot. By doing this, he gave me a very accurate estimate of what would need to be replaced, which gave a more accurate cost estimate. Atlantic never even went on the roof or looked in the attic. They came out when it was dark and "measured" the roof with a roll-a-tape in the yard. With S&K, I didn't feel rushed or pressured and he didn't need any signature from me before leaving. They mailed out a packet and I was able to decide what to do at my own pace without a salesman breathing down my neck. I had a friend who wanted to have his roof replaced too, so after looking at my house, Don and I went to my friend's house. Don looked over his house and told him that he honestly didn't need to replace his roof. My friend still wanted to have it done anyway, but the honesty that Don demonstrated was admirable. S&K did his roof too and he say's he's happy with the work. The crew (of 9 or so) that they sent out replaced my 35-square roof in less than a day. I was very pleased with the service and the foreman went over the work with me when they had finished. They cleaned up well and roof looks great. A few days later, we had some really hard driving rain and I noticed some water was dripping down the siding under our covered patio. I called the project manager and he sent someone out the next day to fix it. There was a spot where the driving rain had pushed water under some tabs at a pitch change in the roof. I haven't had a problem since. The price that I paid S&K was about 30% less than the price that I was quoted by Atlantic for the same materials and work, even after Atlantic nearly cut their price in half with one of those, "Only if you sign tonight" deals. S&K did right by me and I will use them again if I need more work done. read more

S&K replaced the entire exterior of our house, which included the roof, siding, house wrap and gutters. The process began with Bobby Moore, who did the initial site visit and measurements for the estimates. He patiently answered all of my many questions, which allowed me to make informed decisions about selection of the products for our home. The communication within S&K is exceptional. We were kept informed by staff through every step of the ordering and scheduling process. Without a doubt, the installation teams are the most organized, professional and dedicated individuals we have had the pleasure to work with. They were always punctual and kept us updated on progress, issues and questions. They obviously take a great deal of pride in their workmanship as evidenced in the meticulous detail applied in each phase of the installations. Their organization and teamwork allows them to meet the challenges of this demanding work. The roofing team removed, repaired and installed a stunning architectural roof in one and a half days. This also included removing and disposing of two satellite dishes, attic fan, vents and completing extensive repairs. They accomplished this work during a strong winter wind. The siding and house wrap team was led by Marvin. He and his team were amazingly organized while completing this highly detailed installation. After removal of old aluminum siding and replacement of many feet of rotted wood, they installed beautiful new insulated siding and wrapped all trim providing us with a maintenance free exterior. We were amazed at the exceptional detailed trim work they performed. This house never looked this finished before. Last, but certainly not least, was Ronald and his coworker who installed the "No Worry" gutter system with covers. Ronald was exceptional. He walked around the house with us reviewing the entire gutter layout with us as we discussed the problem areas. He made and implemented numerous suggestions that will improve the functioning of the gutter system and like the other teams, the finishing of the gutter installation is exceptional. S&K is simply the BEST! As many other reviewers have stated, it was an absolute pleasure to work with S&K on this project and we certainly will look forward to working with them again in the future. read more

We hired S&K to remove the existing 1 layer roof from our house and shed and install CertainTeed SureStart Plus 4 Star Integrity Roof Systems, which included an upgrade to CertainTeed Landmark Pro Limited Lifetime Premium Designer fiberglass shingles underlain with CertainTeed Roofers Select High Performance underlayment. The installation included Ultra Dual Pipe Collars, aluminum chimney flashing, apron flashing, step flashing, WinterGuard on the 1st three feet from the gutter edge, aluminum drip edge on the rake and gutter edges, and 66' CertainTeed Ridge Vent. We upgraded our contract from a 10 to 25 year workmanship warranty. After obtaining three estimates from three roofing companies, we selected S&K for three main reasons. The first and main reason is that they replaced our siding and installed gutter guards several years ago and did an outstanding job. The second reason is that their price was substantially lower than one estimate and lower than the other estimate after a discount advertised on Angie's list. And, last but not least, the third reason is that, even though we were happy with their previous work on our home, their current rating on Angie's list was excellent. In addition to our house, we also had them replace the roof on our shed so that it would match the new roof on our house. This was a great decision because our old shed now looks brand new. Similar to the siding job, S&K did an outstanding job on both the house and shed. Everyone involved was extremely responsive, professional, and friendly, including Eric in Sales, Crystal and Mary in the office, and the work crew, who amazed me with their skill, speed, protection of gardens and walkway/porch, and clean-up. Throughout the entire process, I think I had responses to all of my questions within minutes, and believe me, I had a lot of questions, especially for Eric. The work crew finished the house and shed in one day, even though they had to replace several pieces of plywood due to water damage, and they did a remarkable clean-up job. The entire process from the time I contacted S&K for an estimate to the completion of the work went very smoothly. Our review relates to replacing rotted wood on our townhouse, and it is rated five stars primarily because of Dwayne, an experienced carpenter and fine communicator who explains problems and solutions clearly. The review also relates to the fact that after the first visit we noted that a problem had been missed, and we sent pictures to verify; it is Dwayne's reaction that deserves praise, for he immediately scheduled a return to fix the issue. Furthermore, Dwayne is honest. An example is that he priced a repair and explained all that would have to be done, telling us we must alert our neighbor because the work would impact her townhouse, too. However, when he came to do the work he found he did not have to do as much as he's thought, and he completed the work quickly, even saying he could help the future painter by painting the piece before he inserted it if we had paint available. Now that is is beyond the call of duty, and forward thinking as though he were doing work on his own house, for the painter could not have painted the part of the board that slid behind. He advised us he would speak to a manager about lowering the price because the hours estimated were far greater than the hours worked. My husband works for a construction company, so understood completely unforeseen work order changes, and spoke with the manager to agree on a fair price for work actually done. So our five-star rating is obvious--good work done honestly. The only down side is that we had to wait for Dwayne a long time after each estimate, for he is very busy, understandably so, but he is worth the wait. We were irritated when another employee of the company in conversation on the phone commented that Dwayne was "only a carpenter," for Dwayne was the face of S&K Roofing to us, and much more professional than the person to whom we were speaking. There is no cause for a person in an office to speak that way of the most important people in the company, the ones who actually do the work and please the customer. read more

I recently used S&K Roofing to replace my siding, gutters and side door and they did an amazing job! once my wife and I decided we wanted to take on these jobs we took the time to grab multiple quotes to make sure knew what our options were. The sales rep at S&K was thorough, accommodating and patient with all our questions. It was the main reason we went with them and they did not disappoint. The job was done in three stages. First was the side Door. Steven came in on a muggy Monday morning and was upbeat and very cordial. He did a wonderful job making our side door look and operate like we've wanted it to for years. He even took the extra time to adjust our storm door that had given us issues for about a year. A true craftsman! Second was our siding: Peter, Mr, Young, and crew were extremely kind, and always started early and worked through the day. They didn't mind that i was out there a lot hovering to see what was under my old siding. They explained what was being done every time they saw me outside and reassured me that i would love the end result- they were right! They wrapped our windows and doors in black trim and it looks just like painted wood - they can wrap anything! They made our house look brand new. Third phase was new gutters: Denis and crew came when they said they would and had beautiful, seamless gutters installed within 2.5hours all over our house and garage. They asked me how i wanted the down spouts cut and made everything look great. In the end, my wife and I are so glad that we went with S&K. Having my siding replaced was the first major home improvement project that I have had done. I had no experience with this and had to rely on the internet and family for help on the right direction. I was told to meet with several salesman to get the "right feel" for the company and decided 3 would be enough. S&K was the second one I met with and I wish I had stopped right after there, because of how smoothly and comfortable the meeting was. My S&K salesman was Tom C. and what set him apart from the others was how he approached the meeting. He scheduled the appointment so that it was convenient for me and he came prepared when he showed up. His knowledge for this industry was impressive and I could tell he had a lot of experience, which was comforting. He also was not pushy, unlike the other two salesman I met with. He did not make me feel like i HAD to sign the proposal, but instead told me to think about things and make a decision after that. From there, I was helped with other people from S&K with scheduling which was super easy as well. Everyone I spoke with was really nice and helpful, which helped confirm my decision to work with S&K Lastly,the crew showed up on time everyday and did a great job with cleaning up and installing the siding. I am so pleased with my experience and am happy to say that I made the right choice. I will certainly use S&K in the future!! read more

I had S&K do my roofing job (large home) after researching through several companies. S&K representatives were not only helpful in measuring accurately so extra material would not be ordered but also advised me intelligently about choices of shingle quality and color. They wisely steered me away from a light color roofing that would eventually have showed streaking. Their crew worked very hard on the hottest days of July and very efficiently. Clean up was thorough. Their foreman was very precise with sealing chimney and flashing areas. Some plywood had to be replaced where water damaged had occurred from a previous ice storm and no extra charges were made. Wider channel was needed on finishing a porch roof and the foreman saw to it that the right size was in place the following day. From scheduling, to estimating, to delivery, to completion S&K people were courteous, hard working, knowledgeable, and competent. Insurance companies and local retailers such as Lowe's will recommend or provide roofing services, but there is a high turnover in contractors with these firms and often are the contractors that can not establish clientele. It is unfortunate that my pleasure with S&K does me little good in that they provided me with a roof with a lifetime guarantee which means I will not need them again! read more

We just had nine Vytex Fortis 5200 Series windows installed in our 15 year old townhome. The installation was done by Steve and Gary. We were so pleased with their workmanship, capability and overall professionalism that we have just placed an order for two additional Vytex 7000 Series patio doors. This was a project that we were going to delay until next year, but were so happy with the installation results of Steve and Gary, we elected to have them finish off this project this year. We had been having leaking in our ceiling near our chimney for almost a year, despite having had our roof and gutters and having our chimney flashing redone last year. After a number of frustrating follow-ups with our original roofer and chimney repair company, we called S&K, which came highly recommended on our community page. Sean came out within two weeks despite a very busy rainy season. He checked our roof and told us quite honestly that the problem was not the roof or even the flashing, which had been done well but the porousness of our older bricks. He applied some silicone sealant right then and told us to call him again if it didn't work after the heavy rains this weekend; he also mentioned we should just keep periodically reapplying this sealant ourselves. This leak has stressed us out for months and Sean was extremely honest and helpful. He didn't try to sell us any expensive repairs but was upfront about the problem. The level of professionalism, knowledge and service exhibited by Sean and everyone we spoke with is so rare nowadays; we can't recommend him or S&K highly enough. read more

Every time we've had storm damage, a hard to find leak needing tracked down, old flashing needing redone immediately, window frames needing stripped & recaulked, or just a shingle needing tacked and resealed, over the last 14 years S&K has been hugely responsive in having an estimator on site within 24 hours, and top-notch repairs done within a couple of days at the longest. Regardless how busy they are after a big weather event, John Watkins is especially willing to always go the extra mile each and every time to make sure we are 100% satisfied, start to finish. More than once he's even come by own his own time, after work hours, to get an estimate completed when S&K was covered up with storm repairs in the area. And all their repairs have been competitively priced and have stood the test of time : we've never once had to have any of S&K's work fixed or redone. Ever. Based on our experiences with S&K, we'd never even consider calling another roofer, regardless of rates, for our repair or replacement needs. A+ ! read more

I don't usually post reviews, but I have been extremely pleased with S&K Roofing. They installed a new roof for us in 2016 after a hailstorm. Installation was high quality and efficient and the price was reasonable. But perhaps most importantly, they stand behind their work. I noticed a leak in my kitchen ceiling that my plumber thought was due to rain coming in around a vent pipe that vents to the roof. Matthew and Bernie from S&K came out today and quickly diagnosed the problem as being due to rain coming in through the vent pipe and leaking through a pipe joint in the attic. In other words, it was not really a roofing problem. Nevertheless, their solution was to install a "candy cane" extension on the vent pipe which they were able to do on the spot. Best of all, they did this at no extra charge ! So if you want a roofer who does quality installations at a reasonable price and goes above and beyond in standing behind their work, I heartily recommend S&K Roofing! read more

I hired S&K to replace my roof and am overall satisfied with the results. They were quick to come out for an estimate and fairly quick to schedule the job. The job itself was complete within a day. Upon inspection there were some issues I had with the initial work they performed so I contacted them about it and they sent someone out to verify. In the end they were able to address everything and followed through quickly and professionally which is what I think really counts. It's clear they care about customer satisfaction. I had contacted 4 different companies for quotes before choosing S&K. To be honest it was a pretty tough call with what information I had and having never hired someone to do this level of work before. Ultimately I made my decision because S&K had one of the more competitive offerings, offered a financing option and a decent warranty. Further, there was some peripheral work they did for me that none of the other companies were as comfortable performing. read more

I had S&K replace most of the windows in my house about a year ago and I was very happy with the quality of the windows and the installation that was done. The only window we didn't replace at that time was the front bow window due to its higher cost compared to other windows. We just finally had that bow window replaced this week and the installers Gary and Steve were very professional and did a great job. The installation looked great and they cleaned up the mess when the job was done. Through this process there were a few weather delays which I expect with windows and roofing in the winter. The day of my install it was expected to rain all day starting late morning and I expected these guys would be calling to reschedule but to my surprise they called before 7 am asking if they could come over and get started early to beat the weather. S&K in my experience is a good local company to do business with and I would definitely use them again. read more

This company has one of the best working crews I have ever been lucky enough to work with. You can set your watch by them. At 7:30 am equipment arrives on site. At 7:45 the men and women assemble. At 7:55 am, ladders go up against the house and the people start climbing up them and get to work. Amazing. I have only seen this action replicated in the Midwest, Nebraska, where I was lucky enough to run into a remodel company (of two), who were apparently equally well-wired to the nuclear clock in Colorado. The roofing job is proceeding with beautiful effect, despite hurricane force winds, loss of power, rain, more rain, and more wind. And not a bit of rain into my attic, despite the 70 mph winds which did no damage to the partly completed roof. Yayy! Amazing. I will update this as the roof nears completion, with pics. Very happy camper. My year of interviewing a large number of roofing companies, in MD and PA shows I chose well! read more

My husband and I hired S&K to repair a problem area of flat roof over the side porch entrance to our home. We'd had the problem repaired several years ago by another firm but it wasn't long before the problem returned with water dripping through the fascia and causing the wood to rot. S&K's workmanship and customer service was second to none. We were pleased and felt taken care of from the initial call for an estimate through to the completed job. The crew did an excellent job and left our yard, porch and deck in a neat and tidy condition, just as they found it. They were courteous and worked diligently and efficiently to complete the job as promised and on time. We expect to use S&K in the not so distant future for window replacement work and are happy that we've found a company that delivers on its promises for quality workmanship and excellence in customer service. I had S&K Roofing come out and replace my old, severely damaged gutters and downspouts. S&K Roofing came out and installed upgraded 6" gutters and over-sized downspouts, per my requests. The guys were great. The cleanup was spectacular. I was extremely pleased. Then I had S&K Roofing come out and install windows and new outside trim in our Dining Room bay window. I had purchased Anderson windows from Home Depot. S&K Roofing had no problems installing my windows. These guys were professional and worked very hard. I thought I couldn't get any happier with their service but I was wrong. I am overly pleased with the quality of work that S&K Roofing provides. I only wish I could post a picture of their services. I strongly recommend them for any gutter or window services that you might have. You will not be disappointed. Schedule a time for them to come and give you an estimate.
