I had a disappointing experience purchasing a sugar glider from a vendor at an Animal Expo who incorrectly advised me that buying only one was sufficient. After researching, I learned sugar gliders should not be kept alone, so I bought a second glider elsewhere. I found Gliders R Us, where the owner demonstrated genuine care for the animals and confirmed I needed another glider. Unfortunately, after two weeks, my new glider became sick and weak. Despite the Gluders R Us helpful guidance to try to save him, the glider passed away a week later. This experience highlights the importance of accurate information and compassionate care when buying exotic pets. I DO NOT RECOMMEND !!!! read more

Please if you get any kind of animal here, please do your own research on care. As I'm going through the care sheets I see so much that is wrong. Hedgehog one, leopard geckos and bearded dragon care sheets are WRONG. Do not use reptile carpet ever, leopard geckos need to be in a 40 gal tank, bearded dragons are never meant to eat reptile pellets ever, and are supposed to be in a 120 gallon tank minimum 4*4*2. Never feed hedgehogs dried bugs that the owners sample tray has smh fleece is best for the whole cage and bedding is ok to potty train them. The women that's there maybe the owner idk and IDC but she's very very rude af too. They don't know the proper care and are known to sell sick animals. I don't know how they are so popular. this place is absolutely amazing. the employees are helpful and knowledgeable, making it so easy to talk to them. they ask about my snake and my boyfriends crestie, and even helped me sex a jumping spider i found outside. unlike all of the big chain pet stores i've seen, s&s sells not only tank setups, but just tanks too (which is a blessing when trying to move a crestie into a bigger tank without all of the extra stuff for it). i highly recommend coming here, they've got all kinds of animals and tanks and decorations. overall just an amazing place. they know about bioactive enclosures, and have given recommendations on isopods that the crestie will be less inclined to eat. They do have a wide selection of animals but most animals are so crammed together they look unhappy and I feel so bad for them. They have a sloth there that looks like it's been forgotten. Alot of birds in small cages its sad really. Rabbit cages had lots of spider webs on it and the rabbits look like they have been forgotten too. This is the place to go if you are ever wanting to buy a hedgehog, sugar glider, or even a prairie dog. They have a very wide selection of animals you wouldn't expect a pet shop to have like lions, scorpions, geckos, alligators, turtles, and way more. The location is... interesting. It is nestled in the middle of a neighborhood and you have to drive through a ghetto area of town to get there. It was a very interesting drive to say the least, and it gives me more appreciation to my GPS. The price of the animals were OK in my opinion. We ended up purchasing a 9 week old hedgehog for $100. I'm not sure how other places sell for but it didn't seem that pricey, especially since you can't just go to a Petco and buy one of these. The only things that were expensive were the equipment, which is where I think they make the most profit. The smallest cage size they have is $45 and with the bundle (to save cost) would be $99 which included everything you needed such as food bowls and little hut. Well, each little food bowl costs $7 and the plastic hut costs $4 which should really be a lot cheaper. We felt like they were pushing us to buy the extras like pin stripes on a car. Oh well, a business is a business. The service was pretty friendly. There was an employee that worked there who was dressed in shorts and old white t-shirt who helped us out a lot. He was friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and helped us with our purchase. The other few ladies there did not care as much. Everyone there dresses in normal clothing and don't wear name tags so you won't recognize who to ask for help for until you see them cleaning and feeding the animals. read more

This place is simply amazing, it has everything that you could ever need. The staff was beyond friendly knowledgeable and took the time to walk me through the whole process. We actually drove four hours just to come to this specific store for Sugar Gliders mainly because of their reputation and the fact that they've been breeding for over 30 years. Kaitlyn was the associate that assisted me and she was fantastic. Also it should be noted that The Pet Glider LLC, which also does business in Houston has only been breeding for 17 years and they got their original breeding pair from S&S exotics. The only difference between the two is The Pet Glider is twice as expensive and has terrible store hours. Who closes at 4pm on a Friday??? What a horrible store. It is obvious to anyone who knows anything that this store is only in it for the money. They cram too many animals together. Nothing is properly cleaned. They had piglets in a tiny, dirty pen. And I know about pigs, these babies were NOT old enough to be away from mom and when asked about the pigs they said they would stay small. Mini pigs can get to 200+ lbs and then people don't want them anymore. Other animals they have there have no business being sold, and are not taken care of. This place needs to be shut down. No one who honestly loves animals would get one here and support this. Very, very sad. read more

I go in nearly weekly mostly to wander and look at the animals/pick up food for my exotics. Every time I've gone in even when they're incredibly busy they've been helpful and friendly, always willing to answer my questions and point me in the right direction. Funny enough rabbits are considered exotic pets. They can't be bought from a Petsmart like the class pet hamster. I ended up buying a young lionhead which arrived the day before from the breeder. He had a nice coat, looked alert, and was litter trained. I made it clear I've owned rabbits before so the staff didn't bother pushing food and supplies on me. As a tip, most retail cages are overpriced and too small. There are better and cheaper alternatives out there. Be prepared! Their animal inventory changes so they may not carry what you are looking for at that time. If you are looking for something specific I suggest calling before driving 20 miles outside of Houston only to be disappointed. Cons: -The animals are not housed in their respective ideal conditions. I visited at the beginning of summer and the interior was warm and stuffy. Imagine what it'll be like in full blown summer heat. Rabbits can overheat and a majority of them were lethargic due to it. -All animal sales are final with no refunds. They advised if health issues are found within 3 days after purchase through a vet the animal can be returned. After that, they'll work with you on a case by case basis. Basically there's no guarantee, it's at your own risk. Thankfully mine is healthy, but I imagine this isn't always the case. read more

I bought whites tree frog from here at Nashville's repticon and everything seemed fine. Other than the one eye that always looks dilated. I knew going into it that he'd have issues but I didn't want someone who wouldn't take care of him to buy him. The lady at the stand gave me a 'discount' because of his gimpy eye. Whites tree frogs are brown when stressed and green when happy. So I didn't think anything of him being brown at repticon (it's stressful) When I got home he relaxed and turned a light green. That's when I saw all the scratches and scars. He looks like he was tortured! He acts fine and he's the best little frog but I feel so bad for whatever he went through at S & S!!! I do not recommend buying an animal from here they seem to all be sick or injured (based on other reviews). Edit 4 months later: Someone from this business sent me a message today stating that the Whites they get come in as juveniles or adult frog and that they are both captive bred and caught. Funny because they told my he was hatched in March of 2017. I thought I bought a captive bred frog but the woman's defense was that he was wild caught and that's where the scars are from. I feel lied to. They essentially told me that they didn't do anything to the frog because they didn't have him in their possession long enough to cause him any harm as the scars are old. She also used the term "rofl" which I feel is unprofessional seeing as this is not a laughing matter. So far he has been great scars, gimpy eye, and all. read more

I have visited S & S Exotic several times, and I have always been impressed by the staff's knowledge of all animals. They really know their stuff, and won't hesitate to tell you the "dirty" truth before you invest in an animal. Just yesterday I heard them telling a family that Chameleons are not pets that you can take out and play with, that the more you handle them the more stressed they become and will more likely pass away sooner. As a chameleon owner, I know this is the truth and was surprised and relieved to hear that they were telling this eager kid's family that to make sure the chameleons wouldn't go to a home with wrong expectations. Although the building is small, they do carry a large supply of unique animals and reptiles. Every time I have been, there seems to be something new and interesting which is why I love going but don't expect to handle any of the more exotic animals without real intent to buy. read more

Recently bought a little hedgehog from these guys at the repticon in Austin. Took him to the vet due to some scabs he had on his body. Turns out this poor little guy has mites so bad he has several lesions over his body, a upper respiratory infection, and possible ringworm. I purchase animals from events like Repticon to make sure I'm not supporting pet stores that don't take proper care of their animals, and I'm very disappointed in this. Update: This will now be our second vet trip in the week and a half of having him. They are going to keep him overnight. He was looking very pale and blue so they put him in oxygen. They said that his body is not getting the proper amount of oxygen for some unknown reason and that there is a big possibility he will pass overnight. In the meantime they will be giving him fluids, oxygen, and an injectable antibiotic. Fingers crossed he makes it through tonight. read more

On July 18th I walked into this store hopeful to see a store that treated their reptiles correctly based on some reviews I saw. My worries always came from the fact that most places that sell these types of animals aren't always up to date on care and husbandry. I had been saving up and I have done extensive research to make myself very prepared to care for a chameleon. I've come to close contact with a reputable chameleon expert to perfect every aspect about my husbandry and care. Now having said that, coming into this shop I was absolutely appalled at the husbandry of every single animal inside. Terrible habitats such as the bearded dragons, snakes, and the iguanas being housed together when all are known to be territorial. When I saw the "chameleon selection" every single thing about the chameleon husbandry was deadly, from the substrate in the bottom to the lighting and "uvb" bulbs they used. It is a fact that chameleons aren't very social creatures and require perfect care or their health declines rapidly as they are just a fragile reptile. First off 15 chameleons in one enclosure NO MATTER HOW BIG is always a no because they don't get enough space and others will take in more uvb by sitting higher and blocking the rays of the lights. Their enclosures had spiky substrate and very little green foliage for them to hide which is required. They had sticks which was the only thing I saw that was decent. Their uvb looked to be from the 1950s, very yellow and obvious to anyone is not the correct lighting which is a t5 linear bulb. What I saw were dirty coil bulbs which have been proven to not provide the necessary heat and uvb WHICH LEADS TO CALCIUM DEFICIENCY. And my favorite, males and females together again at least 15 so now you have 15 mixed genders and possible gravid females with harmful spiky substrate and now where to lay except a smelly bug fested bin. Good job y'all. Now when talking about costumer service. In the store it took me and my husband 30 minutes to just get a hold of someone that would help us out. When I finally got some help and got to see the chameleons, the woman helping me decided to scream in my ear that if they are handled they will die! Meanwhile she's handling several chameleons by their ribs (again fragile bones) turning black and expressing signs of high stress and puts them on herself for whatever reason instead of giving one to me. When I reach over and finally got a hold of the one I wanted I walked to the counter and she put him in a bag. We leave despite being filled with rage about their husbandry and basic knowledge. When going through his transition to proper husbandry, I started to see signs early that he was a happier, more friendly guy, but he ate very little. I thought that due to him being a little older than my other baby chameleon, his appetite wasn't as big. So I continued to offer food throughout the days. Now Monday the 20th of September, I noticed he was eating dirt from his plant which is not a good sign so I immediately have him taken to a vet because that is my actual child. And she tells me he has a calcium deficiency due to improper lighting over a long period of time. He said the chameleon seemed to go under improper lighting for the majority if his life. Already knowing this pet stores lack of knowledge and the fact that my lighting is perfect and up to date I do not blame myself. The vet gives my baby liquid calcium and he is brought home praying he would be better. I give him calcium everyday and by Wednesday he is at the bottom of his cage to pass. His strength at zero he passes through the night and I am heartbroken the next morning. I had called the pet store to express my frustration and sadness and I was interrupted in the very beginning and put on hold for 2 minutes. When she finally came back to speak to me she stopped me and said "sorry we don't do refunds." Well how presumptuous of you, I didn't think of asking for a refund. After that I was even more angered and I told her that just she wait until I get back and I'm bringing my dead baby's carcass to see the damage caused by their utter stupidity in caring for these animals. She said to me the reptiles are only in their store for one week and I called bull there's no way. if you sold all those animals you wouldn't be in that dump of a place you call a pet store. You guys abuse animals and then expect people to accept the fact that their chameleon is old and sick and it wasn't their fault in the first place. You don't deserve to be allowed animals seeing the conditions you make them live in. I would say thrive but they aren't they are dying because you lack the care or sensitivity for these precious animtals. read more

1. The snake that I ordered had been sent to a reptile show in Alabama! I was told this *after* my order. 2. Staff never responded to any of three emails. I was told that Internet service was down in AL, but that does not explain why you did not click on Reply back in Houston, twice. 3. I was told that they cannot ship to me on a Saturday, due to fear-based policies of "what may happen". When they realized that my snake had been sent to AL, however, they had no problem shipping it back to Houston that *same* weekend. 4. I waited 5 days for my snake, was told that it would ship on Tuesday night for Wednesday arrival. Waited all day Wednesday, could not track my shipment via the normal method, had to call the Vendor for follow-up. Within one minute, they "found" my package and said that it would ship that night instead. It arrived at my town the next morning at 09:26. It had either never been shipped from Houston, or it had been misrouted. 6. I waited 6 days for my product, the Vendor got payment that same day. Meanwhile, before my snake finally arrived at my town, it had been on at least 3 jet flights. (Should not stress any reptile, right??) When they demonstrated that they REFUSED to respond to any email after the sale, they convinced me that they are not professionals. * I will never order from this vendor again - unless I want to be lied to and experience a 6-day ordeal while waiting for my product. read more

This facility should be closed down. After purchasing a glider years ago and being instructed on how to feed it..I conducted my own research and found out how wrong they were on nutrition and care. I regret feeding my glider per their instruction for so long. They also think it's okay to house sugar gliders in such small enclosures. This facility is mill and just breeds and breeds for money. Doesn't matter the species. It's horrifying to see the enclosures. The lion that was housed in the back was also neglected so badly. They finally blacked out the door so no one can see through. While the staff may be kind and friendly..they can't be all that great because of the way they are treating their animals. read more

This is a late review as i was younger but i now feel like i can share my experience. Bottom line my family is animal lovers and have had animals since i can remember. When we have were in highschool my sister and i were eager to finally have exotic pets. She wanted w hedgehog and I've wanted a ferret since like 1st grade and we went here to look for them. We both got our pets and the only questions we were asked was about cages that we got with them. The one they recommended for my ferret was small but i didn't think about it at the time so we bought it. A couple days later we took them to the vet for first check up. her hedgehog was found to be covered in mites and very sick where mine was slightly sick and they found a growth on his foot that we were told was nothing by the store person but came to find it was a tumor. After medicine and care her hedgehog passed within a year where my ferret wasn't as bad but recently passed about 7 years after i got him (if the age they gave was right he would've been around 8) The store was crowded with animals climbing over each in cages and i refuse to go back. I would love a ferret again as they are great pets, but i would like to wait as the loss is still painful and i will either go here again and see if they are better or find for another store. I don't hear good from friends that have visited recently but ill see for myself. Hopefully they are doing better by these animals now read more

Horrible customer service and unwilling to admit and correct mistakes. I bought a sand boa at Repticon in Nashville. One of my daughters then decided she also wanted one so we returned the next day to get another. We chose a snake thinking it was healthy like the others, but it wasn't. Upon getting it home and comparing its behavior to the other healthy snake, I immediately tried to contact the company. I couldn't reach anyone and several days later the snake died. I continued to try to reach the owners through Facebook, email, and phone and they would not respond to any communication until I called and complained to an employee in the nicest way possible that I had not gotten a single response. Finally I got an email, with no apology for the lack of communication or that they sold me an unhealthy snake. They said I could keep my receipt and get a credit at the next show---next year. I still need to get my other daughter her snake. It's just a lot of money to spend and have wasted. This is not how you should treat people. I sent pictures of the set up and the healthy snake to assure them that it was not something we did. The snake just wasn't well. I understand that there's a risk in getting any animal, but this was clearly not a case of us doing something wrong that affected the snake and the lack of communication and empathy was just ridiculous. I would stay away from this place. They are not people you want to deal with. read more

This pet store is not your average, there is a very wide variety of species. From snakes, to sugar gliders, there are countless options to consider. Although it was extremely fun to admire the animals, it seemed like there were too many animals in one tank, and because there were so many animal habitats, the place really did have a pungent odor. Most of the animals seemed stressed and upset, I really wish they were given bigger habitats because it was very heartbreaking to see so many homeless pets. This is officially the coolest pet store I have ever been to! Their prices are way better than most I've encountered. And they have very friendly and KNOWLEDGEABLE people working here. Kate helped me out so much and didn't make me feel like I was stupid for some of the questions I asked her.
