Went in with zero expectations and left planning my next visit…read more Stopped by Tacos Mi Rancho near Lake Merritt and honestly didn't know what to expect. From the outside, it looks like a straightforward taco truck, but wow was I surprised. I ordered the Carnitas Super Taco, which came loaded with lettuce, cheese, cilantro, onions, sour cream, and guacamole. Everything was fresh, well seasoned, and packed with flavor. My only complaint? You only get one taco per order because I definitely could've eaten another. The Kid ordered the Carne Asada Super Taco and before we even pulled away, she was asking for a second one. That's usually a pretty good sign. We also tried the horchata and jamaica, and both were delicious. The horchata was creamy and flavorful, while the jamaica was refreshing and not overly sweet. What surprised me most was how quickly they got the food out, especially considering how popular this spot seems to be. A few things to know: * Cash or Venmo only * Parking can be a challenge, but it's worth it * Keep an eye out for the new speed cameras in the area Their hours are another plus: Open daily, 9:30am- midnight Overall, this was one of those pleasant surprises that reminds you not to judge a place by appearances. Definitely looking forward to coming back.

No tables and chairs outside - just pure to-go. Parking is limited to street parking with many of the spaces taken by Lake Merritt visitors. There was a constant flow of customers when I went during non-peak dining hours, so I'd assume that they have lines during other times. The steak fries were a bit bland with too much sour cream and less of everything else making the fries a bit soggy. The sauces did a lot of the heavy lifting to make this dish a bit more enjoyable. I would definitely come back to try their burritos and tacos - which are what they are most known for (I just was craving steak fries that day). There must be a reason why locals love this food truck!

We ordered and shared the smoked brisket, smoked ayam lumpia, nasi goreng, rujak slaw, and macaroni goreng between three. It was the perfect amount for us. I honestly forgot how long I waited but we came as a group so I got a beer next door first. The Dino rib def was a 10/10 it was so tender and I love the red onions they give on the side of the bbq. Def get a Dino rib or two over the brisket. Brisket 6/10 - this was a bit dry for my liking but it def did fall apart well. But it's a 10/10 when you eat it with instant ramen (just heat up the brisket in the instant ramen broth and u got yourself a solid meal) PLUS it becomes so soft and tender doing so Cole slaw 9/10 - I rlly liked this it reminded me of Vietnamese Goi (cold salad) and that was really good. Pro tip: there's parking in the back lot and get yourself a couple of beers from the brewery next door while you wait :D

Weather was nice so we grabbed a table outside and ordered from a QR code on the table. Sadly, learned they were out of an ingredient for the Hawaiian roll French toast so I got the normal one instead. The waitress was really nice and managed to balance bringing out four water glasses for us. I haven't had French toast in a while but it fulfilled all my childhood memories. The Kalua Pork Hash was soooo tasty too, loved the gravy. Would recommend!

Being a completely new customer in unfamiliar territory, I felt extremely awkward walking into a…read morevery small and packed establishment because eye contact was made with two ladies that obviously worked there (more than once) and I received no acknowledgement or even a head nod as I stood somewhat in the middle of the room and heads turned with curious eyes in my direction... all I could do was wait because there was nowhere to go. I quickly sensed that maybe this was where the locals go (every one seated at the tables were happily talking loudly) and I couldn't help but think maybe it was obvious I was not an Alamedian. "Shack" is a perfect label in it's name - it's tiny and intimate with probably a handful of tables. It really brought lots of memories of Hawaii bubbling to my mind. When you first walk through the door the first table is on your left and 3 or 4 other tables follow it along that wall. To your right is the small kitchen/food prep area behind a short wall. Two to three steps forward takes you to the middle of the room. A few more steps forward and then you're in front of the cash register where you order food. This is also basically the other end of the room where the servers are walking in and out to retrieve food orders to serve. So it felt crowded. Ordering went fast - you tell them what you want, you pay, and then they give you a table card and you go find a table. I sat outside. Anyway, they have ube mochi waffles (Gluten-Free!)! That made up for my insecurity. Paired with a mango matcha latte even! That definitely brought it up a few notches. Plus I got to sit outside with a dog! The outdoor area actually looks much smaller when you look at it from outside but once you sit down you realize it's roomy and comfortable. It's also clean out there (not a lot of flies buzzing around during my visit) so plus, plus, plus. They brought my order out and I felt myself relax more as they finally brought out some smiles and friendliness. It may have been the cute Labrador under the table, though. Overall, if you are missing the feels of the islands this is the right place to be! Also, the malasada didn't disappoint. It came out hot and fresh. Nice sugary crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Although not Gluten-Free...

Be prepared for long lines depending on the food trucks - one pro tip if you're in a group is to have each person wait in different lines to order and share family-style. It's lively with music, kids playing in the garden, and people dancing at the entrance. You can also catch the sunset from here which is a beautiful sight. As it's no longer crowded compared to pre-pandemic, you can easily walk around and enjoy the outside space while eating delicious food. I hope more people visit Friday Nights so that they can continue to bring in more food trucks and expand the event.

But now, it's a lame version of its former self. I haven't found the right mix of food for me. And what I eat is a bit underwhelming. Now, my husband wants to go and it's "safeish" because people aren't crowded together like we used to be, there are no live bands, no dancing, and they have many fewer trucks. My first time here after they started having this again, they only had 3-4 trucks. They also have the same trucks week after week. Some of my favorites aren't available and the ones that show up haven't always been ones I'd choose to go to. But it's ok. So they've gone from a five-star breath of fresh air each Friday, to a three-star, take it or leave it. I'm hoping that they are able to revamp things and earn those two stars back!

There's a great variety of food trucks lined up in front of the Oakland museum. I'm always partial to the Southern Comfort restaurant. I've had their po'boys, shrimp, and heavenly seasoned fries. But I also love when Señor Sisig and anything that sells ice cream make an appearance. Customer service is always awesome and as fast as they can with the amount of people that show up. Highly recommend going to this weekly event at least once!

I got over my fear when Shakeel, the Market Ambassador at that time convince me to come. Even the other Market Ambassador Elon kept me company making sure I was OK at the market. I will admit every Friday Night I am at Off the Grid outside the Oakland Museum of California. I will admit I overdid it by checking out the exhibits at the museum weekly where I made a friend Preston, the Emcee at the Oakland Museum of California. Over 10 different food trucks to chose from. The highest food trucks they had at the market was up to 20 during the summer time. It is worth coming down to Oakland Museum to see all the different food trucks they have. I will admit I miss the past Market supervisor that ran the market (Adam, Alex, Paul, Henley, whomever ran the market that I can not remember their names). Ben, the current supervisor got this market running smoothly. I been enjoying the market. What makes this market to go to on Friday Night compared to going to Fort Mason is discount on museum tickets. You have a museum to go to while getting food from the food trucks. They also have a garden where children can run around in. The live music at the Oakland Museum of California is amazing. It is worth checking it out. This is the market to check out Friday Night.
