This is an INCREDIBLY shady business. Their excuse for all their unethical business practices is "It's in your lease contract." Yes, the good old fine print excuse. We have been unhappy with this business for quite some time. We became customers because of an affordable rate for storage. After we spent so much energy moving things in, our rent was increased after 6 months, and then steadily and periodically following that. We had not complained because we were told this was "in our lease contract." The icing on the cake is when our automatic payment didn't go through this month. Instead of giving us a courtesy call or an email, we were instantly penalized with a 20% penalty fee, which when we inquire about, were were told again it's in our "lease contract" in fine print. The district manager, Craig, with whom I had spoken on the phone, was quite rude and aggressive, and interrupted me with "can I please finish" every time I tried to tell him it's unfair. (This is quite ironic when he is the one who interrupts and speaks over me mid-sentence.) I asked for his full name and he refused to give it, saying he does not give out his full name. As a district manager, you would think he's professional enough to identify himself. Exasperated, I called again and asked to speak to anyone else but Craig. The lady on the other line agreed, but instead, Craig insisted on taking my call again, smugly saying all company calls are directed to him. I find this quite incredible in a company that has so many locations throughout the state. In our second phone call, he had calmed down quite a bit and now offered to "split the waiver" with me. At this point, I feel so disgusted with their company practice and their tone with customers that I have decided to move all my things out no matter what, to which Craig again smugly replied "that's fine with us." I see they are not an accredited BBB company. Please know they are taking advantage of their customers. Just because things are finely stated in a lease contract does not make it ethical. read more

I want to start this review off by saying that Safeguard in East Williamsburg is not only a life saver, but that Bernadette is probably the model of excellence in customer service. Warm, funny, compassionate, and very good at business. I'd give her (and Mario!) more than 5 stars for customer service. In fact, I've literally told her that I love her in person, as each time I've opened a storage unit has been a sad day for me and she turned my day right around. However, I've got to give the overall business a 4/5 for some logistical reasons - while very conveniently located, their hours are not at all convenient. Most people using self storage are working 9 to 5s, and even on weekends, it is hard to find the time to get into the storage unit. Other storage companies have more relaxed hours that are conducive to working people's free time. I also find that the rates are higher in comparison to other storage facilities. Lastly, the loading area is something of a nightmare - in comparison to other storage facilities that have larger loading dock areas, this is relatively small and accommodates 2 cars maximum, one in front of the other. This can cause a great deal of pain whether you're the person in a hurry or the person who has a long load-in/load-out. Parking nearby is a nightmare during their open hours, so you want to be in that loading dock. And leaving the loading dock can be a harrowing experience due to the busy traffic and lots of blindspots. On the logistics side of things, I have to give Safeguard a 3/5 at best. But that Bernadette. She's so amazingly friendly and accommodating that the personal feeling of loyalty I have to this location certainly demands a high rating. If you live in the neighborhood and can get to their location during their limited open hours, I highly recommend it. read more

Individually as well as together they solve all my challenges as far as the space is concerned. I have only had positive experience with both ladies. Ther are also solutions to any challenge.They are drama free and completely professional at all times. Yes there are rent increases. I can not express how happy i am with the Assistant manager in the grand st location. she is Phenomenal. She makes you feel welcomed every time you walk in through the door. She is always ready to assist me with great manners. Bernadette, What cant i say about her. Amazing, happy and available when you need her. Those two girls keep the place impeccable clean. Who knew storing stuff could be so pleasant? I had an overall wonderful experience with Safeguard on Grand Street. Every time I had a question, I could call and speak with a REAL human on site, who answered everything immediately. The space was clean and bright, with multiple carts free for use. I was always able to back my car or truck directly into the loading dock, which made things especially easy. Lina at the front desk was especially friendly and helpful. He literally showed me all my options in terms of storage/price/space AND physically showed me all the potential spaces I requested to see. You cannot pay for that type of quality. Highly recommend this self storage. Located conveniently for those that live in Bushwick, Williamsburg, or surrounding Brooklyn areas this storage unit is staffed by a friendly duo, Bernadette & Lina. They made the move-in, move-out, and all visits in between very pleasant. This is by far the best customer service that I have received from a self storage facility and I always felt like my belongings were safe and always secure.
