She was very passive aggressive and from times in the past i've noticed she does less than the bare minimum for her job. My daughter also explained to me that many times her instructors were not helpful at all, were not patient and stressed her out. If I could pick 0 stars I would. The staff have no hospitality specifically the receptionist and one of the driving instructors. A driving school is supposed to give you room to grow and flourish as a new driver but I was met with condescending attitude from my driving instructor who made me feel more nervous during our drives. After having a string of some unpleasant interactions with 911 Driving School, University Way, Seattle, I chose to come to Safety First Driving School for my skill test. I had already paid online, in advance, but after reaching there, I had a piece of document missing from my car. The staff was extremely courteous, and let me reschedule for the following week. Even on entering their branch, the person at the reception, and all the other test takers were smiling and polite. It made me feel at ease. I finally took my skills test, and before the test, the person administering it said "Don't worry, you are going to do fine!". It made me feel pretty comfortable. I have about 10 years of experience driving back home in India, and was able to pass the test. But thanks to the staff for making me feel calm and focused. Would recommend! read more

I was a student at The Safety First on Lake city way. The classes where good, and I had no problems there. My first three in car drives where good as well. the First two instructors I got where calm, and helpful when teaching me. the third was pretty quiet, maybe a little overly abrasive and judgmental, but ultimately still gave me helpful feedback on what I needed to work on. However the fourth Instructor Laura, was a bit different. At first I thought she was nice, she was optimistic demeanor at first, which made me a little more comfortable with driving on the freeway for the first time. However as soon as I got in the car and began to back out of the driveway. She became much harsher, to the point where it surprised me, and rapidly stressed me out. She was mildly nitpicky about how I maneuvered the car, and was snapping instructions at me. All throughout the drive, she became sweet and chatty one second and then when I made a miniscule mistake she became mean again. Driving on the highway was a really stressful experience for me that way. I got her three more times after that. ultimately I feel as though she would be better suited to teaching people to drive safely on roadways, would be better than driving maneuvers, and freeway driving. As both tasks are rather stressful, and need a calm and more helpful instructor. One more thing. I recently attempted the knowledge test, and failed. Which in part is also my fault, perhaps I didn't study as much as I should have, (I did review the Washington state drivers guide, and took numerous practice tests) The questions where strange, especially with how they worded some of the questions. As a minor, with no car, I also just don't know how registration works for a vehicle. And would not have been able to answer questions pertaining to such things. I failed by one point. The instructor present, was not much help and actually kind of rubbed it in my face. saying just how much it sucked, that I couldn't even get that last point. Do note, that the knowledge test costs money. 35$ According to the same instructor however. That test is a state test, meaning the driving school itself wasn't responsible for the hard questions. Ultimately. It is kind of a shitty school, I'm sorry. There are good people there, but my experiences with it have just been ultimately disappointing, angering, and quite honestly disheartening. read more

Ripped off at Shoreline location on the road test. I made the mistake of letting my driver's license expire for long enough that I needed to retake the driving tests. I passed the written test on the first try (although incidentally, it occurred to me that I might not have, were I not a native English speaker). For the road test, I got an older, bald-headed man with a limp as my driving instructor. I arrived clean-cut, nicely dressed, made pleasant introductory conversation, and drove as well as I ever could on familiar streets in the same neighborhood where I grew up, and had driven for the better part of 35 years. He assessed me as "unqualified", dinging me on at least half a dozen "mistakes" with explanations that were hard to follow. If they were in any driving guide, they were certainly not practices that any reasonable driver would observe. I said to him, half-joking, that I didn't think I would ever be able to pass a test with him. (I would, in fact, be surprised if anyone could.) As he was the only instructor at that location, I paid a second time to take the road test the following week at the other (Lake City) location. I passed that that test with flying colors, on far less familiar roads, with no further practice or preparation. Moral of the story: beware bad driving instructors (or pick the Lake City location!) read more

Ashinay Berhanu is the best instructor at Safety first driving school. He is extremely helpful to students like me who are beginners and have very little knowledge about driving. He was always patient and would give valuable tips and techniques about safe driving. The office staff also helped me to schedule the classes conveniently and Berhanu squeezed in his schedules over a weekend since I wanted to finish the classes sooner. This is a long overdue review. I was in my mid 30s when I first came to Safety First Driving School. I had never driven before since I had lived downtown forever with public transportation readily available. But I was moving away so I needed to learn how to drive ASAP. I signed up for 16 of the 90-min driving lessons, and I went from not knowing how to drive at all from the beginning to driving confidently and passing my driving test at the end! My instructors Michael and Berhanu were incredibly helpful and kind! They taught me lots of useful tips and safety technique, which shaped me to become a cautious and confident driver. I strongly recommend Safety First Driving School. Before moving to Seattle recently, I lived in NYC my whole life and had zero driving experience, and had built up a LOT of anxiety about driving. I had my first lesson with Dawit and subsequent lessons with Herman. They were both really patient and positive and helped me get over my fear, and I passed my test on the first try! I chose the Shoreline location thinking the streets and traffic would be a bit calmer than in Seattle, and I do think it was a good learning environment in that regard. I scheduled all of my appointments by phone, which was very easy, although it was a little harder to schedule lessons in the summer (maybe because more high schoolers are learning then?). This was a very positive experience that I would recommend to other adults learning to drive for the first time. read more

Terrible. My daughter went here for her driving test. The instructor, Brook, was horrible. His reactions and guidance during the test were completely off-putting and abrasive, making an already nervous kid completely on edge. First he complained in a very confrontational way that she should not have waited for a car and she had time to turn left in front of car. Then he complained that she shouldn't have turned left. Then when a car in front of her turned into the turn lane but was halfway in and half in her lane he complained s he didn't go into the right lane to go around him- for a turn he did not give her enough notice for. I think he was looking at his phone. He failed her for not meeting his personal driving preferences. His behavior was confrontational and mean, and not help at all. Maybe he was mad because she had not taken her driving classes there, but this guy obviously should not be working with kids, as I've heard other reports of this kind of behavior. After standing outside for over ten minutes, he came out and and she could retake the test for free, so he knew he was in the wrong, but I don't forgive jerk strangers who make my kid cry, She is not the supersensitive type either, and we are NOT coddling parents. This guy may manage a business well, but has no place in the field. Avoid. read more

Safety First is a top notch driving school! Before I started my lessons I was very nervous about driving and was stressed about finding a school that would be able to accommodate my 8-5 work schedule. Many places I tried calling either went straight to voicemail or had a rude receptionist answer the phone. Then I found Safety First. It was such a breath of fresh air to hear a friendly and super patient voice on the phone for a change and they made it easy to schedule lessons after 5pm. If on the rare occasion they missed my call, I found that I would receive a call back almost immediately. I really appreciated that. The classes themselves were very informative and thorough and I passed my test after five lessons. Berhanu especially was an excellent teacher. He immediately put me at ease, raised my confidence and gave me great driving tips that I felt helped me to learn and improve quickly. I am so glad I found Saftey First driving school. I had previously failed my driving test twice 10 years ago and was apprehensive about trying again. The next day I cancel the appointment, but I get charged $35 because I was late on Monday. This place is a fraud, the manager is impolite. I did both my lessons (4 of the 1.5 hour "downtown driving" lessons) and my drive test with Safety First, and I couldn't be happier. I am an adult (over 30) driver who has never been comfortable driving, but it's become necessary and so I found this school on Yelp. After getting my permit, I took lessons with Michael and Berhanu. They were punctual, excellent instructors - they never shouted or talked down to me, they explained the driving process in easy steps, and I left every lesson feeling like I was becoming a better driver. After my last lesson I was feeling a little unsure, and thought I might take more lessons, but my instructor told me I should try taking the driving test first and taking more lessons if I didn't pass. I appreciated his confidence in my abilities and scheduled my driving test. Brook did my driving test, and it was much the same level of professionalism that I had come to expect from this company. I passed my test, and afterwards Brook walked me through the areas that he felt I needed to work on (which I really appreciated). Overall a great company, they have evening and weekend lessons and are very helpful when scheduling. Five stars for the lessons and the flexibility of being able to take them from the downtown location. I had most of my lessons with Michael, who was chill, patient, and managed to make me feel really at ease as a new driver. I progressed steadily with each lesson and the material covered. I got my license just a couple of weeks after my lessons ended. I think their scheduling system could use some improvement. However, there was one instance where I had confirmed that I wasn't available but they still had the lesson on their schedule and charged me for it. They did eventually refund the lesson to me, but not without a lot of insistence on my part. read more

These reviews are pretty accurate. My child is a high schooler who attended this driver's ed school. Couple of things to note: On day one, they had my brand new driver driving on Aurora during rush hour traffic. At first it made me totally freaked out, but then I realized it's probably the best experience they can get. I know too many grown adults who are still afraid to drive in Seattle, and I'm thankful my daughter got introduced to it immediately. Second, Brook is the one to go to. There are a couple of instructors, and the other one yells at the kids. I don't care if my kid's a teenager or not, no one's yelling at her but me! ;) Seriously though, that's the biggest complaint I have about this driving school. I complained to Brook about his co-workers behavior, and he was VERY apologetic, made it very clear that he was interested in who the instructor was who had been too harsh, and made sure that my daughter's future drives were with him personally. It changed my rating from a 2 to a 4. The best thing about this school is it's significantly cheaper. I think it was $400 as opposed to $600+. Be aware, if you have to reschedule a drive, they will charge you $20! Hopefully this helps some parents make a decision in choose a driver's ed school. They're a little rough around the edges, but all in all it's a great deal! read more
