I was here at this Safeway yesterday evening, and I had the most wonderful customer service shopping experience. I checked out my groceries with a Cashier by the name of Tangie, she was very friendly and helpful. I needed help with my digital coupons on my Safeway app, and I am new to this app, and I didn't know how to use it, but Tangie was very patient with me and helped me how to clip the digital coupons, which saved me $20.00 off of my grocery bill. I really like the three combo deal they have in the deli department, it comes with two side salads of your choice, also with two pieces of chicken for only nine dollars. Also got to love the digital coupons on the Safeway app, you get major savings, I purchased the ben & Jerry's ice cream, the original price cost $7.99 and with the digital coupon, it only cost me $2.97. Also to mention with the excellent customer I received from the cashier who checked out my groceries, she was the one to help me with the digital coupon, to help save money on the ice cream. She didn't have a name tag on, but on the receipt, it said your cashier was Tangie, definitely shopping here again, it's hard to find a convenient store, that have great workers that provide good customer service and have major deals. Foods are always stocked, fresh, & labeled correctly. Those are the most important things for a grocery store. Other than that, this is the laziness bunch of employees I've ever seen. It's so frustrating. I've been going here regularly for years since they first opened, so my overall experience remains consistent as so: Cons: - Employees work at slow pace & are unfriendly - Managers or employees don't wear name tags/titles - No one is at the deli to help, even if you wait (or even if they're there & see you!). No intercom call being made from above for assistance either. - They don't answer the phone or the button calls (i.e. alcohol, customer service desk). - Once, a manager said I couldn't return Signature-brand allergy meds because it was opened, even though it didn't work & is labeled as "guaranteed satisfaction!" I ended up not saving those $2 for going with their brand. - When new stock comes in, they leave all the boxes on the floor in a hazardous way. - Security is always on their cell phones & I don't feel safer - They can't decide on their store hours (i.e. 24 hrs, closed early evenings without reason, may or may not open on holidays). Pros: - If you hate people & want to shop quietly or independently - Shop next door at Trader Joe's prior to coming here to get everything else. read more

They have new luxe on shopping carts so that you can't go from one store to the next in the shopping center. They now lock up! I understand they're trying to keep people from stealing the shopping carts. However, when you can't go from one store to another in the shopping center, it's a big problem and it left me stranded in the center of the driveway after spending a ton of money in the store. read more

Absolutely the worst guest service for returns! The personnel that are supposedly trained to assist their guests/customers with returns have no people skills whatsoever. I recently attempted to return an item without a receipt. I explained that the transaction was on my club card. The associate was condescending and rude. I fully understand that a receipt is required, but what this employee could have suggested was that I could find the receipt on the Safeway App. (I only learned this after I left the store, and donated the items). Had she provided me with this information, she could have processed my refund and the end result would have been a very satisfied guest. Instead, I left the store contemplating if I will ever shop there again. Why would I? Their competitor Trader Joe's is right next door and their employees always go the extra mile to take care of their customers. I come here often to grab something, I think its Susan at the checkout every single time I come here and Im not a rich person she asks me to donate 10 dollars so "a family can eat" then makes snarky faces when I say I just did, "you literally asked me half an hour ago." If I go ten times a day she will ask every time for 10 dollars and then make faces. Alameda is a rich place, its got one of the most generous programs. Why pester and make faces when I say I cant. I come from the poor gutter on the other side you call Oakland/Fruitvale. Stop pestering people, 10 bucks is a lot. I almost always get something for a buck or two. You want to make your customers feel like shit because they dont throw in 10 bucks every time they pass the checkout, keep doing what you are doing and you get more zero stars for shitty customer services. read more

I used to work in Alameda and came to this Safeway location frequently for lunch, scratchers, groceries. I like their Turkey Pesto & Bacon Chicken Avocado sandwich from the deli. Their hot soups are pretty good also. They have a Starbucks, Redbox and now there's a "DMV Now" kiosk too! You can print your registration sticker and make payments. Beats going to the DMV and waiting hours! I think I like this location the best due to the friendly service, clean store and well stocked items. There's plenty of restaurant options in the same center (Chipotle, Panera, Five Guys) and retail stores such as Ulta, Old Navy, Ross + more! read more

Pros The store is decent, there are worse safeways. Cons Customer service is a rare find at this location. I have had cashiers check me out without saying a word, a thank you, or a smile. Too many employees prioritize their thug persona over customer friendliness. Many times I have been encouraged to go to self checkout where the line is shorter. I know it's a shorter wait but I still don't want to do it, it is not my job. And I just can't tell you how many times the cashier filled out the customer satisfaction survey!!! This alone should tell you everything you need to know about this location. When the survey comes up, they won't let you do it. And Heaven forbid you need a roll of quarters. I know about the coin shortage but you should be finding solutions for your patrons instead of excuses. I could go on, but I'm going to cut it short. read more

I go to this Safeway once a week. Pretty crowded most of the time. I have not had customer service issues- usually helpful and pleasant. prices are high due to inflation... but that's everywhere now. One request though for the Deli. I've noticed that your chicken tenders taste like fried fish sometimes... must be either sharing batter or oil to fry them. I started going to this Safeway within the past few years and it was quite a change compared to the Bayfarm Safeway. This one is HUGE and has a Starbucks. Nice place to grab some caffeine while you shop. There's also an Amazon Locker as well as other machines--I've used the key copy one and it's much better than making a trip out to Home Depot. They're generally well stocked and have good variety and good sales. This review is mainly for their butchers--they are always really nice and helpful. Props to the guy who thought I was in my early twenties. Checkout lines can be long, especially right after work, so I'd suggest coming during off hours if you can. read more

I am going to put my review up here because I think this is where my deliveries come from. Thanks to the shoppers from this store for doing my orders. I have been doing online orders from Safeway lately and really enjoying that - no stress, no fuss. Sometimes they don't have what I want in stock but you can specify if you want substitutions or not and get something else or not. I find it really stressful to go to Safeway in person so shopping online there is really working for me and less stuff to carry home - so it is really working for me and less errands to run. I order twice a month and like it a lot. It does not cost much for the delivery and saves a lot of time. I hate food shopping so the less I do of that the better and less impulse purchasing. I can't say I'm actually too pleased with Safeway delivery from this location. I had my second delivery and it was less than stellar. First of all I only got one quarter of my order and some of these were substitutions, not very good ones. As an example, I ordered two packages of shredded mozzarella cheese to make pizzas and got shredded cheddar instead. I am not sure how many of you have had a cheddar pizza, and although I'm willing to be flexible, this wouldn't do it. I ordered two steaks and got one, no explanation; and some basic staples I needed like eggs and butter just fell off the list. Also I specifically order and pay more for organic milk as it has a longer expiration date, often a month or more out; mine arrived within 5 days of expiring! Very discouraging. Once locked in to the order that's it, no flexibility and you don't know what you'll get until it arrives. Surprise. Although you do get a preview receipt by email once the shopping is checked out before it's delivered, but nothing you can do then. Delivery is OK and they have been on time and bring it to the front door. I always leave a good tip as these folks deserve it. Today's delivery came by Safeway truck and previously by Door Dash. The delivery people seem surprised to find the tip waiting for them... come on people, I hope you're all doing likewise! I go directly to Safeway as I typically get good discounts and bargains through my card and the online 'Just 4 U' program. Yet since the shelter came into place that program's choices seem paltry and minimal at best. Oh well, I look forward to doing my own store shopping again, hopefully sometime soon. read more

This Safeway is one of the bigger ones in the area and they close late too. I usually go to this location if I'm trying to get things that are on sale. The reason is that since this is a bigger location, they have more inventory on products while smaller stores tend to sell out a lot faster. The store is spacious and has a pretty large deli area as well as sushi. read more

This is the better of the two Safeway locations I've been to in Alameda; It is significantly better than the one located on Island Drive. For starters, it's bigger, cleaner, frequently stocked, and has a Starbucks inside. I agree when other reviewers say this location has better stock and fresher produce. The employees are faster and nicer here as well, which isn't to say they are bad at the other one, but it's just not the same. I always prefer coming here because they always have what I'm looking for and the food is always fresh. The location is great too, since it is so close to a bunch of other stores nearby. read more

This safeway is okay, one employee that I encountered however I would not recommend, he parked at the customer parking area and hit my passengers side of my car leaving scratches on it. I'm really disappointed on how their employees act and does not know how to accept responsibilities for their own action when they're already caught in the act. Yesterday I made an order to pick up groceries today. Just now I got an email from Safeway saying that "We've received your order cancellation." I didn't cancel my order. After trying to get through on the phone with no luck, I used the chat and found out that SAFEWAY canceled the order without giving me a reason why. This is a pretty shady practice. They could at least have offered to move the whole order to another delivery date. Instead, I guess they expect me to create a new order, item by item, and just try to pick a date when they might bother to fulfill it. eta: I contacted Safeway already by chat. So I searched everywhere to give reviews for the DMV NOW Kiosks at are located inside safeway store here at at South Shore! For this and only this alone I give Safeway 5 glowing stars! What a smart way to make it convenient for their customers and we all know they have the space for it. Located on the side entrance by the floral department. Boom within a minute I am walking away with so much instant gratification new DMV Sticker (it even has my car license plate # printed on it) and New Registration in hands! LOVE LOVE LOVE Best if you have these items on you: 1) Existing registration (in your glove box- AKA the one about to expire) for the machine to scan or write down your plate number and last registration date. Or take a picture of it so you have it with you... 2) Credit Card So I'm such a geek as I knew they just allowed DMV install this machine and I simply Couldn't wait to process my DMV renewal here. I was looking forward to see how user friendly it would be and I'm glad to confirm it is! It has a bar code scanner which scans either your renewal paperwork OR old registration paper (both has barcode on top). So convenient. When I am at the deli section of Safeway, I make sure I see all the customers who are standing there, waiting to be served by the employees before I order anything. Common courtesy is to allow other customers to be served without cutting in no matter how long the customers take to order something and/or sample their ware. Yesterday I wanted mac 'n cheese as a side dish for my dinner. There was only one employee behind the counter helping the customers; thus, he was not sure who was there first. He approached me, but I gestured that there were two other customers before me. He helped them first. The second customer and I wanted the same thing - mac 'n cheese. I got the last of it...yay!!! They have a great deli section, but one thing they don't serve here - fried gizzards! While he was helping the second customer, it gave me an opportunity to take a few photos of the items in the refrigerated display case (photos attached). If I had plenty of funds in my wallet, I would have bought all those items and had me a big Super Bowl party...lol...alas only in my dreams! read more

This has to be the most shoddily run Safeway in the state of California, and possibly the entire planet if I can be allowed to embellish for dramatic yet apt effect. Three months ago, I posted a 1-star review for this store based on their hugely irritating and very unprofessional practice of closing the store (it's a 24 hour location) without warning and seemingly without reason. So, if you travel to this location at 2am because maybe, you're a health care worker who gets off at midnight or are an Instacart shopper sent here on assignment for a late night customer, you too will become enraged at the waste of time and gas getting here and the feeling of being completely disrespected when you find the front doors locked, no signage explaining why, and with employees clearly milling about inside. I had experienced this phenomenon six times when I posted that first review. I have experienced it another three times since, including tonight when I arrived at 12 midnight and was pleasantly surprised to find the store open. I did my shopping and left an hour later. While in my car and before heading for home, I discovered they had overcharged me $10 for some Tri-tip steak, and for that size of a mixup (this happens all the time by the way so check your receipts before leaving because it's bound to happen to you, too) I would go back inside to get the difference refunded. Only thing is....come on, you know what's coming....the doors were locked again. Which gives us a grand total of 10 times in the past 9 months, and you know it has to be more like 50 or 60 times since I only shop here once a week or so. Bad management practices don't take holidays. This happens during other nights as well. Of course it does! You might be thinking, what a stupid a-hole for going back over and over. And you'd be correct. It's the definition of insanity. Or perhaps the misplaced optimism that leads one to think that once a problem is brought to the attention of management, most companies would adjust their behavior. After all, who wants disrespected, pissed off customers? No one does. So why does this keep on happening? Answer: they don't give a s*it. Stop the insanity. Shop somewhere else. I plan to, once I get that $10 back. This could take a while. read more

This store is always clean, well stocked and open. They also have a gas station. I've been coming here for long enough to see an entire generation retire. The new crew consists of millennials who often will not acknowledge you or greet you. More rude behavior that is expected and required to land a job these days. You just can't expect civility today. Get in, spend your money for basic food items and leave. That's the culture of shopping experiences at Safeway. They get 4 stars cuz they are stocked and open. read more
