Horrible experience at the Bakery! Customer Service was amazing! Went online to look at custom cakes for my son's bday & found a cake I wanted but had questions so I decided to pop in and speak directly with a bakery employee... HA! I waited a good 10 minutes flipping through the book while I waited but she was so busy cleaning she didn't want to stop & she saw me but I guess she was hoping I would disappear... HA! When two other customers joined the queue as well she finally paused BUT she went to the customer who was of the same ethnicity as her first even though they were the last ones in line... HA! She was very irritated to be interrupted from cleaning to help any of us & said told me they could not make the custom cake I saw & side note: it is in the little book of options ADVERTISED BY THEM AT THE BAKERY COUNTER... HA! I was so stunned I went to the Customer Service Desk to inquire about the bakery & they said she was rude & to reach out to the Bakery Mgr or go check out the one of the local competitor stores... HA! The ONLY reason I am giving 2 stars is because the Customer Service people were WONDERFUL & gave me the Bakery Mgrs info & had me laughing when I left. I would totally give them 5 stars hands down! Super helpful, friendly, funny & really cared about my ordeal & experience as a customer! They can't deliver on grocery delivery. Frequently late. Always have out of stock items, and I don't always catch the texts asking me to approve substitutions. So, I don't get what I want and still have to go to the store. Keep an eagle eye on the app, it may change your delivery window or grocery pickup location. If you cook, you can't rely on this for your shopping needs. read more

I don't think anyone even reads yelp reviews anymore, but for what it's worth, here's mine. I love this Safeway. Employees are universally kind, helpful, and know where things are. Manager Kim is excellent. Pharmacist Tony and everyone in the pharmacy are top drawer. I'm a huge fan of Safeway's clearance meat and it almost always has a day or two left until the "sell by" date. Ditto for the marked down Bakery items. Everything rings up at the correct price. No complaints, but I do my main shopping at Aldi due to finances. However, I always find deals at this Safeway and I love shopping there. Many thanks to the good people who work there and do all it takes to keep this customer happy! read more

Absolute trash. We are visiting from out of town and showed up tonight to pick up some odds and ends on our way back to where we were staying. I ended up needing the bathroom fairly urgently and went towards them only to see that they had been barricaded off by two shopping carts. An employee who came out of a door must have seen the desperation in my face and gave me the go-ahead. I quickly went in there and went about my business. While in the bathroom, another employee came in and knocked on the stall door. I spoke up to let him know I'd be out of there shortly. He proceeds to talk to me like a child, saying the bathroom was closed. I responded by telling him one of the other employees had told me it was ok to use their bathroom, to which the employee asked me which employee it was. I described him (he was a tall black kid) and the employee repeated my description (if I'd have caught the kid's name, I'd have just given him that) as though I was trying to be racist. I had to ask this employee if we could finish this conversation when I was finished going to the bathroom - something I never imagined I'd have to ask anyone ever in my life. The kid continues to chastise me by reminding me that "next time, the bathroom's closed!" before storming out of the bathroom. First of all - COME CLEAN YOUR SH!T. That bathroom was absolutely disgusting. Now I'm going to spend until my next checkup wondering if I have tetanus or hep C. Second of all - I'm a disabled combat veteran with some problems that led to me being in the position I was in when I needed to use their bathroom. Not that I expected him to know that but he busted in there and treated me like he was a cop and I was a suspect. A little courtesy would have gone a long way. Safeway - find that kid and train him, if you don't end up firing him. I don't care who you are - you don't come into a bathroom and act all feral to a complete stranger. read more

Typical dirty, old, expensive Safeway location. We went there to get some brat buns and found an older woman picking up literally everything in the bread aisle to check the dates before making her selection. I'm pretty sure she touched almost every item in the entire section multiple times. Luckily, I bought some buns at a separate little display and got out of there unscathed. It's okay. One of my buddies lives close to here. This works for grabbing some brews and chips. Football season will be here soon enough. Also hockey is looked forward to as well. I'll be stopping in for goodies here and there. Nothing exciting about this store. It's not as modernized as many locations are. My biggest problem with Safeway, is a "minor beef," but it is a consideration. Even before this inflation, their prices tended to be quite high. Now I'm looking for a blood platelet donation spot for money. Actually to their credit, they sometimes have some good sales. Also they have enough employees here, and all met have been very friendly. Horrible service at Safeway. I was there and had a terrible experience. I was in the self check out, and I noticed that a lady was standing to my left of me and was staring. I continued to use my phone and transfer funds to pay for my groceries. I thought about asking her why she was watching me but just kept doing what I was doing. She then came over to where I was and said that I didnt scan my ground turkey, I lost my cool and told her to look at the screen and she would clearly see that I had rung up 2 packs of ground turkey. I first of all was very much humiliated as if I was stealing a pack of meat, not to mention once I started yelling and raising my voice she walked off. No apology or anything. I went to the manager Veronica and she was very apologetic. I have called corporate 2 times, and sent an email and still havent heard back. I rarely go to this Safeway but each time I venture in for something there's a robbery taking place and no one typically does anything. I've seen a guy take 2 -24packs of beer and walk out like nothing happened. Last night was a victory after a customer not employee body slammed a guy walking out with several extra large packs of steaks. When headquarters instructs employees to do nothing and customers take it into their own hands it's a pretty sad picture. I smell a lawsuit around the corner when a customer gets hurt trying to stop daily robberies in the store. Cheap ass Safeway needs a security guard that will put an end to this and also teach employees to call the police when these things occur or teach them Joe to review a camera and get a shot of all the thieves. read more

If I could give zero Stars I would. The main reason for the low rating is they don't have any people manning the checkout counters. I automatically give the lowest review to any place that forces you to use the self-service checkouts. Here is why: 1. If you, now an untrained and unpaid employee of the company, accidentally do not scan an item, or don't notice when an item hasn't been scanned, you can and in many cases people have been arrested for shoplifting. Including jailed and having to spend a lot of money to try and get that arrest expunged from their record. 2. Self checkout takes money out of the community. Self checkout stands don't pay local taxes, don't patronize local establishments, or generally spend money in the community. The money that is supposedly saved on labor cost returns to the company. 3. Has noted above it forces the customer to become an untrained and unpaid employee of the company. In essence the customer provides the company free labor in return for reduced and lower quality service. read more

The hours state that they're open until midnight. He let the people in right before me. But then locked the door and wouldn't let me in. I showered this evening, so I don't think I offend. Maybe they got let in because their skin color was lighter than mine. But they literally walked up at the same time I did and walked through the door right before I got to the door. I tried to come last night and it was also closed earlier than it was supposed to be. Strange because this safe Way is always busy late at night. I think I'm done with Safeway unless it's an absolute necessity. Giant is about 1/4 a mile away and seems to always be open at the hours they suggest they are. It was good while it lasted. read more

This location sucks. To be honest I have never been a Safeway fan in general but this location takes it to a whole new level. It might be close to home but I avoid it. The couple of times I have made the mistake of going it was been a disaster. First, it is oddly dark inside. Second, when you are shopping you cannot get help to save you soul. Now, you would think if no one is on the floor there would be lots of folks keeping the lines moving. Well you would be wrong, very wrong. Somehow despite the bad service there are always lines in the checkout area. Ridiculous lines. The only thing that made me go previously was a particular sale item, which, surprise surprise they were out of and I had to get a ticket for. When I was able to go get the product I had to wait in a line that expended down an isle. I came really close to just leaving and while I did wait it out I knew I was not going back. read more

3.5 stars. Seems that some people are real haters of this store. It is not perfect, but it's not that bad people. Also, I saw at least one review of the mini-Starbucks inside the Safeway...which should not reflect on Safeway itself. Anyway, on to the review... The positives in my experience: The cleanest Safeway in the area. It was renovated a couple years back and has a more "organic" look than the hospital sterile all white look of many older stores. The staff is friendly even if they are a bit stressed by the high customer traffic here. The store is always well stocked with everything I have been looking for. Vegetables and store-made bakery items are always fresh and clean. I like to come here when I want fresh fruit and vegetables that I don't want to have to hunt for the good stuff. They dont seem to put anything marginal on the floor, so it saves time. They also have a significant variety of imported, glass bottle sodas (with no HFCS) many of which can't even be found in the specialty international markets. Something that may not be a big deal to many very often - This store has been open during the long weather-driven regional power outages. With the most dramatic outage, they remained open - even when they could not power the refrigerators and freezers - they remained open for other goods. It may not seem like much, but it's a HUGE deal when you are out of this or that and everywhere else is closed. They also had things like flashlights and batteries even when HomeDepot was sold out. The negatives can't be overlooked though: Hand baskets and carts seem to never be available when I walk in the store. Sometimes its as if they have none of the carry baskets AT ALL as I have even searched near the registers. Even when most of the registers and self check-outs are open, you have to wait in line. There is a LOT of foot traffic to this store, but they need to handle traffic flow better. They have no quick checkout/10 items or less as they try to force people to the self check-out instead, but most professional checkers are faster than your average joe. So their cost savings measure is slowing down the process. My overall impression: This Safeway could benefit from some improvements to traffic flow, but overall I have had a positive experience here. Those who complain about this Safeway should visit the Safeway around the corner off of Ravensworth Rd which is horrid! Other than traffic management, I see this Safeway as being on par with the other non-specialty markets in the immediate area...Giant and Harris Teeter. Those who compare any of these to a Whole Foods, Mom's or Trader Joes need to check themselves. You don't have to pay more at these latter places just because of the supposed higher expense of organic foods (which is artificially inflated because their customers don't question it), it's also because of the higher overhead invested in the customer experience...so the customer will feel more relaxed spending much more money on the same or similar items. read more

One of the worst grocery stores around. Never have I been to a GS that has consistently long lines, rude staff, expired and rotten food, to top it off, the cleanliness is just not there. Its actually one of the only GS Ive seen that has a rotten meat section. Its filled with expired or soon to be expired meat at a 30% discount. Most of whats in there doesn't even look fit for human consumption. They also have a rotten seafood section located to the left of the seafood case. All of it that has coupons on the packages. I have purchased it a couples times with it being 1 or 2 days till expiration. Soon as you open the package, the over whelming smell of rotting fish is so bad, you ask yourself how are they able to sell it. Even salmon that was supposedly packed same day smells like death. Being located next to a few large apt complexes , you tend to see people in there that dont a give a crap about anyone or anything. Countless times they stick their hands in the olive bar, bread case, or help themselves to a free sample. I actually saw one guy grab a handful of olives barehanded. Thankfully an employee witnessed it and confronted the man. She ended up taking the entire tray and tossing it (good job). read more

The last two times I bought sliced cheese from their deli that had already been prepacked and priced the bag was not sealed. The cheese is dried out and now I have to make a trip to return it. I bought it for lunch this week so this does me no good. The lunch meat was the same way, but it seems to be OK. I will not be buying anymore from their deli, at least anything that is prepackaged. read more

Floral department is a huge let down. I bought a small bouquet of hydrangeas and a cute green vase for a colleague who is going through a tough time. I paid extra to have it arranged, they charge labor cost 50% of the total purchase amount. All the lady did was cut the stems short and stuck em in the vase, placed the vase in a square box with some tissue paper to keep it in place. The flowers fell out as I was walking to check out and had to rearrange them back in place. Will never come back, ever!!! read more

This message is directed to a Mr. William Scott in Human Resources. I have been an avid and loyal customer of all Safeway. In particular when I moved from Fairfax to Annandale I started shopping at the store below in Annandale VA. Now I understand given location this Safeway does need some renovation and remodeling. But the reason I come is for the pharmacy and some of the Safeway workers. Like Tony at the Pharmacy, and Safeway cashier associates such as Bruce and Lupe. My complaint is as follows. I have been treated badly every time she is there by an associate named Liliana Foster. In fact when I've written checks, all have gone through and she has the audacity behind my back to tell other sales associates that when I come into the stores to check my ID. I'm Caucasian and half Hispanic. Little does she know I speak Spanish fluently and when she said this I responded to her in Spanish which took her aback. They always check my ID. They had been having an issue with THEIR MACHINE reading my check. Not any other reason and the reason I knew this was the bank provided me with new checks and the check went through. Joe the manager doesn't even know how to use the register. He has to ask this lady Lilian's for help. Upon me doing that and going to the bank to get a new check she took all my groceries and put them away after I told her not to. And the only reason I used a check is I was in the process of getting a new debit card from my bank. The most stupid store manager in the DMV area works @this location,for the second time ,I had a serious problem with one of the bakery staff again,I choose a cake and was looking for a baker to write happy birthday on my cake,there was this lady inside the bakery on her cell phone,I had to wait for almost 5mn before she recognized my presence,and she goes"YES",then I said is that the way you should interact with a customer,she got so angry because I told her that,and refused to write on my cake"happy birthday "she said we don't do that here,and starts swearing in Spanish,thinking I don't understand Spanish,that's when I asked to speak to a manager,and another lady came from inside the bakery and wrote what I wanted on my cake,and I politely asked her to speak to a manager,she whispered that the first lady who refused to write on my cake was the manger!!! That's when I went to customer service and asked to speak to the store manger,manager, paged him over 5 times ,and had to wait 15 mn but he refused to the customer service department!!!and again this is not the first time I'm having issues with the same bakery department at the same location,without being able to speak to the stupid store manager!! read more

Found out from someone that my Wife and I know here that the reason this Safeway only has two to three registers opened all the time is because the managment here gets a bonus for keeping the staffing on said registers to a minumum! Other Safeways open as many registers to get the flow of customers moving out the door so they can get their bonuses for staying busy and getting customers out in a timely manner! If you like to get in and out of a Safeway in a decent mood, go to the one on Nutley Street that has the Micro Center and Michaels in it, you won't be sorry plus they have a better selection on things and more items to buy than this one! They have a Sushi Bar, and a Nut Bar that you can purchase Nuts by the pound and buy your own fresh Nut Butter whether it's peanut butter, cashew, or anyother nut that you like. LOL! Also, the Nutley Street location has a better Bakey department, and Deli that will help you out than hide somewhere when a customer shows up. Trust me, you will like this location better than the Annandale one, also there are no one standing outside begging for money, homeless people, and Day Workers hanging around as well! read more

This store is really bad. I was there on Jan 19 and found a lot of the packaged name brand lunch meats with sell by dates as far back as Dec 25. In fact, none of the variety that I at looked showed a date in the future. Gross. A large freestanding freezer case was broken and created a large amount of water on the floor around it. There was one guy working on the large water puddles by slowly placing strips of brown rolled paper towels in a few spots. There was very little signage to keep patrons from walking into the mess. There was a lot of water. At the checkout area, a young male cashier was yelling to another cashier to come and relieve him from his post so he could go work on something in the bakery. The listener respond by requesting an explanation so the two of them yelled back and forth for a good while. Old food, water puddles and screaming sales clerks. I'll avoid this place. read more

The WORST Safeway I've ever been to. Do yourself a favor now, and go to Giant down the road. The heart palpitations it will save you from avoiding the disastrously inept and very unprofessional staff, horrendously depressing store 'feel', and the looooooong waits at the checkout lines which are grossly understaffed, will be worth it alone. I've had decent in person experiences shopping here. However, this is my second time trying the order online and pick up option. Both times, I was told that my ordered could not fulfilled and that the staff had gone home for the day. This was hours after I placed my order and given a time for pick up. This second experience has by far been the worst experience. So far, I have spoken to 3 managers. No one can seem to give me an answer about my order that was scheduled to be available yesterday between 7-8pm. The night manager (1st manager) told me there's nothing she could do and to check back in the morning. She directed me to call the "1-800" number, where I was on hold over an hour and over 20 minutes the other 3 times I called. I was finally told by the representative that I need to contact the store to resolve the issue. I spoke to a manager (2nd manager) this morning that forwarded my information to a different department. I received a call from another manager (3rd manager) that informs me that my order could not be found, and he needs to follow up with technical support. At this point, I am requesting a refund and prefer not to shop here again. I used this service for convenience, but it saddens me to think that an elderly or other vulnerable individual with a fixed income would use this service because they need assistance with shopping. The $52 may not be much to me, but this could be someone's last for necessities. I would never recommend this service to anyone that really needs it. This is a neighborhood store, and I hate to see any system that could potentially take advantage of vulnerable people. I will be following up with corporate as well. This has to change. read more

Been here a couple of times and thought I would throw out a couple of observations. This place always seems to be real clean, I like that a lot. It's convenient for me as I like to drive up and down little river turnpike and do errands on the weekends as lame as that sounds. Also, I have a Shoppers and a Giant nearby that both suck so bad. The deli and bakery here are great and are very convenient. They take coupons here and double them which I like. They get docked a point for having high prices on some items. I happen to like this location a lot as it is better than a lot of the Safeway's I have been in. read more

I thought that this was definitely one of the nicer Safeways in the area. Granted, I was only in there to take advantage of a special in their weekly circular, so I had a whopping 4 items to ring up. Either way, it's one of the largest in the area, their meat and product selections were definitely top notch. While using the self checkout, I did notice how there were a shortage of registers open, but I say that's what the self checkouts are for. Bring those on more than cashiers! Also, check your mail or their website for their weekly specials, they've been having some awesome sales as of late. read more

Slowest checkout ever. The self-checkout lanes are closed at night and there is like 1 cashier. Needs more workers during the night time. It is 24 hours though. This is the worst Safeway store I have ever been in. They are almost always out of items, like milk. A huge grocery store on a Saturday afternoon completely out of milk? No signs, no one to ask, no lights on in the refrigeration section, no MILK. The store setup is the worst, especially where the self check-out registers are, most of these registers are broken and never enough space for forming a line. There would only be 1 or 2 regular register lines open, so they are alway too busy. The staff is rude and are never helpful. Most of the patrons that shop there suck as well, cutting in lines and just plain out inconsiderate and rude. I hate this store, it absolutely sucks and I will never, ever shop there again. read more

Been standing in line since 9:12... in express. Lines minimum 10 people deep and no back up. Good thing I love my dogs and don't know what else is around. Get yourself together, if you need help call the leadership teams at any of the Fairfax locations, they'll teach you how to run the store. read more
