Modern clean coffee bar designed to appeal to the younger crowds. Nice interior spaces, with the one real limitation -- parking lot is too small for their space to keep up with any activity. They have some outside spaces that work for seating only in select time of days due to the direct sun. They have soft music going and do a good job not entirely overloading their space. The drinks are espresso bar sized (smaller) even on their larges, so be ready for that style over the American sized variants or mass market options. Flavors aren't bad and fairly quick on the bar depending on the time of day. If anything they need a few more rotating flavor or specials to catch some interest but the kitchen options help offset that. Where you can at least get your grub with a sit down. read more

This place is so cute, the vibe is so peaceful and calming. They have slight classical background music playing. It's a great place to come and work. Their menu is super broad with flavors that you don't get at many coffee shops. This place has been hit or miss in the past. I've tried their matcha and peanut butter latte before and I was not the biggest fan, but the sea salt foam latte was amazing and redeemed this spot for me!! Ample parking. Pastries and coffee. Crowded at 3pm on a Wednesday. Almost entirely people sipping one cup and sitting for three hours with their laptops. Makes it hard to grab a cup, sit, and talk to another human. The music was very loud, which also made it very difficult to hear the person across the table. They kept turning it up and down. Kind of awful. And dress up the hot chocolate as much as they want, it's not a five dollar cup of cocoa. Overall, if you just wanna sit and fill out job applications, and only have to order one cup of coffee, this is your place. You can open a laptop and sit for hours and no one will bother you. Annandale, Annandale, Annandale. This place keeps changing and competition just keeps popping up. All for the better at the benefit of consumers in this little town. So Underdog Coffee & Bread was a place I'd seen and finally got to check out a couple of times now. This is competition for all the predominantly Korean cafes in the area. Will it stack up? We had an appointment nearby and I stumbled in for something small to eat. Grabbed some hot chocolates, some double chocolate cookie, and a croissant pastry. Great start. On our other visits, we tried different lattes, coffees, and had their sandwiches. I had a bagel croissant style sandwich with eggs, bacon, and spinach. Very good snack. There is no table service, walk up and pick up your order. Space is small, no outside sitting, adequate parking, it gets loud fast when it fills up in there. It's nice place to catch up with friends and have a quick bite. I liked everything they were serving up here. So how does that stack up? I'd say they have better sandwiches here than other places around the area. Pastries and breads selection is smaller. They do serve great coffee but mid hot chocolate. In terms of price, they're up there for a small sandwich but the veggies they use are crisp and fresh. I'd say they're doing okay with the competition in Annandale. I want to see more pastry options but this is mainly a coffee place so if you really want that, there's a ton other places to go to. The drink itself could have been stronger, and it was just banana puree lined up on the bottom, and not mixed with the rest of the drink. The highlight was the one of the mini banana breads, which was warmed up - it was moist and tasty, and a nice little treat. Staff were fine. The seating set up was a bit awkward; random spots here and there, and seemed obtrusive to the patrons entering/exiting. Flavoring, size portion, taste, and price all need to be improved. The banana bread was hard and not moist and detected zero banana. It was tiny for the $6 price tag. The pistachio cream cold brew had only pistachio shavings- tasted zero nut flavoring otherwise. When they asked if I wanted sweetened- they said with vanilla- and I said no thinking that was on top of the pistachio. So it was literally cold brew cream with pistachio toppings on top. After lunch nearby, three of us were craving something sweet and could use a pick-me-up latte in the afternoon. There were a lot of different drinks to choose from, but I was craving a flavored latte at the time, so I asked the barista which signature latte (list of 12 options) was the least sweet. Per her recommendation, I got the HAZELNUT MOCHA LATTE (5.95 for the smaller size) which came with a beautiful feather latte art. Aesthetically, the latte was beautiful and perfect. The drink itself was a bit too sweet for me, and I found that the coffee flavor wasn't too noteworthy, but at least it was there. Overall, not bad, but not great. It was great but we left the shop still debating if the price was worth it. Their "signature coffee" and "only underdog" drinks are a must try. They have a wide variety for everyone and I see they have acai bowls which I thought is an interesting breakfast option as a lot of shops strictly have just coffee and breakfast sandwiches/pastries. Their breakfast sandwiches are good but nothing really stands out. They do use a lot of cheese, you will really taste it in your sandwich. The interior is clean and there is enough seating for when it isn't busy. If it is packed, expect to wait around for a table. So welcome after a payday loans place followed by a vape shop in this same building. They've really raised the property value on this corner. Plenty of parking on a weekday morning. Good coffee and nice breakfast sandwich (sausage, egg, and cheese). They do put a generous amount of aoli on the sandwich that I would hold next time. Really cute cafe! I wish this cafe was closer to me so I can frequent it more often. This atmosphere definitely has a clean minimalist aesthetic which I like. Adorable! I ordered a delicious and freshly made egg sandwich with cheese, tomato and arugula. Their drip coffee is excellent. The place is packed. I was able to find a table with an empty bench. A friend took me here for coffee one Saturday morning and it was very busy (which is always a good sign). The parking wasn't great but, you can manage. Now the coffee.. I love lattes so this was such a treat because they have so many to choose from! I played it safe and got a large dirty chai and it was SO good. They do have food. Despite a line inside to order coffee, I was able to snag a spot in the parking lot out front. To drinks, I ordered a hot pistachio latte and a breakfast sandwich with sausage on an English muffin. Because of the line, it took about eight minutes to get my drink and food. Both tasted great! The latte wasn't super sweet and the sandwich was hot and delicious. There's a slight uniqueness to it, but also very much a breakfast sandwich that you're used to. The space is beautifully designed and very dog friendly. There are treats and water for dogs and you can even buy little dog stuffed animals inside. There are tables near outlets and outdoor seating. I've gotten the banalatte, mango latte, blueberry latte, peach yuzu tea, TITE (Thai iced tea with espresso), avocado toast, and crogel sandwich and all of them were delicious But what really stood out was the service (s/o to Andrew for being the best barista ever)! This is such a cute coffee shop! We kept hearing about the banana latte and I'm so glad we decided to stop by and order one. It only comes in iced, which is perfectly fine, especially when it's freezing out! My cousin ordered the black sesame latte and said she hasn't had a drink taste as strong. I love that the decor focuses on dachshund. If I was feeling better, I definitely would've spent more $$. Service was helpful and friendly. And the drinks came out pretty quick. First of all, as a dachshund owner I'm obsessed with the theme and merch!! That's definitely what drew me to come and try underdog. They have a large menu with tons of drink options which I love. We got their iced matcha, strawberry lemonade and the banalatte. Out of all three the banalatte was my favorite! It's a little thicker than a usual latte, but not smoothie level thick. It has banana blended in with espresso and milk, and topped with cinnamon. I loved it and thought it had the perfect sweetness while also being creamy. It only comes iced but I usually prefer iced drinks for coffee. The matcha and strawberry lemonade were great as well. There is an option to order ahead which is convenient. Gotta give this place some kudos. I walked in behind a group of ~10 people, and I received my order within a very short wait. The baristas are fast, friendly, and importantly pretty decent at latte art, which I've noticed has gone downhill at other coffee shops. Definitely would not expect such fine-tuned service from a place this new. The menu is a tiny bit overwhelming, with an excellent selection of both hot and cold drinks, and sandwiches served all day. I had a cardamom latte and treated myself to an almond croissant that was too pretty not to eat. I noticed several customers going for the premade refrigerated single-serve cakes, which also looked delicious. There's a generous amount of seating both indoors and out, as well as plenty of parking. I've seen some reviews complaining about parking and have to wonder if the reviewers have ever visited either any Starbucks anywhere or any urban indie coffee shop. Like, come on. Who knew Annandale, VA is now suddenly a destination for coffee aficionados? I remember a time not so long ago when pastry and bakery shops such as Tous Le Jours, Shilla, and Breeze where the only places to get a "decent" cup of java. Been hearing lots of buzz about Underdog Coffee and Bread, so decided to meet up with my sister to check it out. Located off busy Columbia Pike, Underdog has a large sign advertising "Coffee and Bread" to passing motorists. The parking lot is deceptively small...not large...small. I appreciate that the parking area is wide enough to manuever, but there actually aren't many spaces. This "deceptively" large illusion extends to the interior of Underdog. It cannot be denied, that the decor is very inviting and welcoming. Large windows illuminate the space, where white is predominate color scheme. Cafe colored tile flooring, matches well with the white marble table tops and subway style tile backsplashes...along with the blond wood tables. The high ceilings and IG worthy space, detracts folks from the fact there isn't actually much seating. There are round and longer rectangular tables along the windows. And odd design choice was the long bar in the middle of the room - which I suppose serves a dual purpose to guide people in the ordering line; and for folks to stand and sip their coffee as is the trend in European coffee houses. There is also a merchandise wall with Underdog themed T-shirts, cups, and bags of coffee. Given the mini-statues and prints of the breed of dog, I can only assume the owners are fond of dachshunds. After a few minutes of waiting, we were able to snag a coveted table. My sister's pistachio latte had a nice frothy milk top, and was topped with ground pistachio nuts which gave a nutty slightly salty crunch. The beverage was also slightly sweet with a nice strong coffee flavor. My "regular" latte was by comparison, predictable but fine. The requisite foam leaf art dissolved upon stirring in a few packs of turbinado sugar to reveal a flavorful mixture of espresso and steamed milk. We didn't order any food from the limited sandwich menu or any pastries from the display case, but did observe several tables munching away on these items. Underdog is a welcome addition to the burgeoning coffee scene in Annandale. But more importantly, it is yet another place for people to just "hang out." With more folks opting to reduce their alcohol consumption, people still need places to gather and socialize. During our hour stay, Underdog was always busy with people popping in their to-go coffee and others chatting away. In the warmer months, might we see a few outdoor tables? read more

Nice to see a cafe open up in Annandale! It's spacious so definitely a good place to work or hang out. The staff is friendly and attentive. I got to try Banalatte (iced only), Iced Peanut Cream Latte, Blueberry Latte (iced only), and Strawberry Lemonade. My favorite is definitely the blueberry latte (no espresso) since it was a homemade syrup with fresh blueberry bits. The lemonade was good, but a bit too sweet so had to wait for the ice to water down. Both the Banalatte and Peanut Cream Latte lacked flavor so I asked for them to put more syrup. I enjoyed the Banalatte, but the Peanut Cream Latte was more just peanut flavor and not sweet so it wasn't my favorite. We tried the Homemade Jam & Cottage Open Toast, and it was not bad! They put blueberry, strawberry, and mango. My favorite was mango and strawberry. I have a feeling these jams are the syrups that they put in their lattes! read more
