Pretty good for a Safeway but long lines on weekends and unmanned return/customer service counters are unplesant. But still this store has all our day to day needs satisfied in affordable prices. This Safeway has bad customer service towards WIC or Women Infants and Children recipients. There is particular lady who was very rude to me and also a few other cashiers that totally discriminate against me and other WIC recipients. I will no longer do my WIC transactions there and have complained to the State of CA how rude they are to WIC customers. I've been a customer of that Safeway since 2005 and they lost me as a WIC customer and possibly a regular as they haven't even apologized to me...ever. So sad! read more

This Safeway is expensive, consistently busy, and horribly understaffed. I honestly hate going grocery shopping here after 2pm. The lines become ridiculously long and there's only 2 cashiers! Go to the self-check out you say? Well there's an extremely long line there too! It's a nightmare. The parking lot is dangerously narrow. It really should be just one-way, but it's not. You know how married people sometimes say, "If I were single, I'd so hit that." Well, if I weren't with Kaiser, I'd so go to this Safeway Pharmacy after the amazing treatment I received when I was here seeking a hard-to-find OTC medicine for my son. Pharmacist Andrew Yau and the other employee were positively dreamy. To be specific, they were: * caring * polite * resourceful * professional * smart * efficient While I was there, Andrew helped me find a temporal thermometer for $20 and gave me the H1N1 vaccine for $15 (no wait). You can get a surprising amount accomplished at Safeway. Andrew ordered the medicine I needed. When it didn't come in, he located it at another pharmacy and called me with that info. He went above and beyond. If I ever go outside Kaiser, I know where I'll go to get my pharmaceutical needs met for sure. I'd so hit that. read more

I always try to avoid this Safeway as if my life depended on it because it is literally one of the worst, if not the worst, supermarket I have ever had the displeasure of shopping at in the Bay Area. The only thing super about this supermarket is the super long lines. Unless you have an hour to spare and standing in line is an appealing way of spending it, you'll want to do everything you can to avoid this Safeway too. The El Camino Safeway in Belmont is chronically understaffed, which results in the aforementioned lines -- the kind of lines nightmares are made of. While I feel bad for the employees who are being set up to fail, many of them frankly don't seem to care. No matter how long the line is, there are employees here who appear to go out of their way to work at a sloth's pace. Also, I came in late one night when stocking was being done. Aisles were in disarray and the stockers were wearing plainclothes (t-shirts, jeans, etc.). It was bizarre, as if Safeway had recruited random people from off the street to stock for the night. All in all, I'm not sure what is happening at this store (is this actually a Safeway or a portal into a strange parallel universe?) but I'm doing everything in my power to stay away from it. read more

This is the grocery store I frequent most often as it's on my way home from work. I don't do a lot of cooking but I know exactly where to find my necessities (milk, juice, cereal, bananas, eggs, etc.). Over a week ago I went in because I needed frozen meatballs. I was in one of the frozen food aisles when I overheard the manager rudely talking down to one of his employees at the end of the aisle. It was hard not to overhear the conversation as the manager was speaking VERY loudly. It was almost as if he wanted me to hear him to show that he was in charge. From what I remember, the manager was questioning the employee as to why something hadn't been completed. The employee was politely trying to explain that he had been assigned to more than one project and that it would get completed. The manager forcefully kept interrupting the employee and made a comment about working on one thing at a time, saying "it shouldn't be that hard!!" It was obvious that the employee was embarassed and I was embarassed for him. How dare the manager belittle him like that. My gut told me that this was probably a common occurrence and I just felt so bad. The manager was a bully! Next thing I knew the manager approached me with a big cheesy grin asking if I needed help finding anything. I told him I was looking for frozen meatballs. He barely glanced into the glass doors right in front of me and told me they didn't have any and must be all out. I ended up going to Lucky for the meatballs. I wanted to make the same meatball dish for New Years Eve and went back to Safeway to check again for meatballs. This time I decided to look in the frozen food aisle just next to the one I was in during my previous visit and guess what. THREE different brands of frozen meatballs! That manager didn't know what he was talking about because he obviously didn't care to confirm where they even kept their frozen meatballs. In November, I had a much better experience with a different employee. I was looking for almond butter and this gentleman triple checked the entire area for me. In the end they didn't have it (Lucky & Target both have it) but I was so impressed with the time he took to help me. He apologized and was so sweet. I would give a much better rating but based on the bully manager I just can't. read more

What distinguishes this Safeway from any other in the area is the fact that they carry Fastrak retail tags. I cross enough bridges on the way to Tahoe and back now that Fastrak is definitely worth my time. If you get it here they give you $30 in toll for a $25 purchase. Ok so it's only an extra $5 but hey any free money is good money, even it it's just one toll and a buck. read more

BEWARE of the so called "app Specials". They don't translate to your receipt so your apt to overpay. The app is a scam, and are banking that people don't review their receipt b-4 leaving the store. Twice last week I had to go to customer service to get my credit on overcharging. Their receipts are so difficult to read, given they show "retail, sale, promotion, and then the bottom line price, so you really don't know what your "discount". Besides, when I asked the associate in customer service, the directions she gave me on the app where incorrect, so even their employees don't understand it! read more

It is a mainstream grocery store. I don't recommend going there late in the evening, they don't have enough cashiers. You end up in these huge lines. It obvious they are short-staffed, so I do my part and go to self-checkout. I forgot my Safeway card, no problem right? Wrong, the attendant wouldn't give me a pass, she said I had to go back out to my car. So I walked out to my car and when I got back the line was around the block. So I put back my items, one by one and came home. Jumped on Amazon and 90% of what I needed will be here tomorrow. You know I get it, rules are rules, but now you have lost a customer, was it worth it? It was obvious to me the cashier was not happy in her position. So a note to the GM, when I have an unhappy employee, I always look for the win/win, and if my employee still isn't happy, then I have no problem taking that employee and turning them into a customer. PS I have 5 stars on Yelp! I was at Safeway around 3:30pm on the 2/28 The gal was "dated" with short wavy reddish hair and if looks could kill, I would be a goner. I finally tried having groceries delivered from Safeway and was disappointed. It was a small order $45 I think and they sent the tiniest ears of corn. The ones you would never take if you were in the store shopping yourself. The hummus I ordered was 16 ounces and because it was out of stock, they sent me a 10 ounce package instead. Beware of a checker named Aruna. A very rude woman. First, she tried to charge us for a recyclable bag which we already owned and submitted for bagging. Her excuse was that they sold similar bags at the check stand and she was going to charge us for it. I explained that it was a Guardians of the Galaxy recyclable bag and that they were not selling those anymore. She next went on to berate me for being in the 15 or less checkout. The other lines were filled up and she was only servicing one customer at the time. No one else came after us until we were almost finished loading the conveyor belt. I apologized for having additional items but she went on to chastise me for using her lane. Again, after I apologized, she continued to shame me and my wife in front of the other customers. I asked her to stop talking so that we could pay our bill and quickly exit. But she continued talking and kept looking to the woman behind us for validation for what she was saying to us. Even as we exited, she continued to bad mouth us to the customers behind us. Truly the most unprofessional attitude for someone working in customer service. She needs to take the chip off of her shoulder and learn better manners. I have never considered not going to Safeway, but the attitude of this one person has tainted my opinion of this particular store. read more

They apparently updated the look of the store but downgraded the employees. Rudest cashier ever. When getting cash back I simply asked if I could have one of the dollars in quarters or dimes for the bus. It was too much for his head to calculate I guess and he got frustrated. Absolutely horrendrous experience. Came in to buy balloons but no service to be found. Finally went up to a bagger who told me the person who does them leaves at 3pm?? No other comment made- no concern as how to unhelpful or unacceptable it is to not offer a service when someone drove all the way there. Also did not realize that it took a rocket scientist to put helium in balloons. I am honestly shocked that a company would ever invest in baggers to begin with, let alone ones that are this incompetent. Came in for cigarettes. No one is there to serve me. I waited 5 minutes and then asked the lady handling the flowers in the booth next to mine. She said she will call for help. She did that twice. Nothing. She went back to mind her own business. I decide to walk up to the cashiers and ask, they send someone to help me. This person doesn't know where the keys are at. She searched and found some keys and tried them all out. She then ran over to the end of the cashier aisle and would look in my direction before talking to someone else. Eventually she came back with a different set of keys and was anxiously trying them all. None worked. She asked me to come back another time. I said thanks, I'll just get them from somewhere else. 15 minutes of waiting and they couldn't even figure it out. If you don't want to have someone on the one cigarette station, then stop selling cigarettes. It's all I came in for. read more

Came by here with my husband after I had dinner at Sushi Monster to purchase some water and fruit to stock in our hotel room (it's always nice to have healthy snacks around when traveling and staying well hydrated). The store was pretty clean and just standard of other Safeway markets that I have gone to. We came after 8 pm and there lines at the register was short. Aisles were pretty clean and well stocked. MANAGEMENT: Ok let me start by saying over the past several years I have shopped and witnessed the decline of this Safeway. I have spoken to several store managers in that time and the good ones want a transfer out ASAP and for the past two years it's a "Merry-Go-Round" of new ones. They have gone from a complacent attitude to simply rude and incompetent. This present lady manager is the worst yet! Attitude as if she's doing you a favor just being there. (She struts her stuff and is boisterous in dealing with customers). Some of the checkers, especially the ones of some tenure, are either morally frustrated or could care less. Note: Don't engage with the short red haired lady called Jan I believe. She is a "Karen!" Just stay in that one long line and keep quiet. (BTW, What happened to the 15 item or less service checkout? (Surely you jest). THE DELI DEPARTMENT: The staffing there, when you can get them out of the back area, has the same pervasive "What do you want attitude"? The new girls there are poorly trained. (ie) Requested please cut the item to a #2 setting on the slicer. Please, just a half pound. Please don't give me the old turkey that's been sitting there pre cut for days! You would think you were speaking in Latin as they just go through the motions. Note: Do not let Miguel serve you..... You know, the loud middle-aged assistant deli manager. I've witnessed and complained about this guy more than once and so have others. Eating in the back while customers waiting, Abrupt to answer a question and dismissive in his reply. I actually watched him prepare a request from one lady and pushed stuff into the trash can, scratch his head and proceed to fill the order. WTF? When I asked the lady "Do you see this?" She acknowledged and when she said she changed her mind he got all macho saying "I already started cutting"! THIS GUY SHOULD BE FIRED!!! THE MEAT DEPARTMENT: Let's just say I have experienced the same situations as other posts here and for some time now. Bait and switch advertising, "Oh we did not get the delivery", "You know, Covid". Dude you been doing this bull before Covid.... But most of all, the relabeling and mixing old meat with some fresher meat. Too many times as noticed by too many other customers. If you buy anything there premartinated, you deserve to get sick! Fore warned.... People I know have contacted the Health Dept. but apparently the beat goes on. Forget about contacting corporate or speak to the district supervisors. They have been responsive only to send a memo to this Safeway saying: "We received complaints, could you please do better." Better! We are talking about peoples health..... CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS: More often than not, and increasingly so, customers are being overcharged on advertised sale items, miss charged due to shelf price tags and items from your "JUST 4 U" selections are charged the regular store price. Month after month buying over $100.00 in groceries at times, I have found up to 10-15% inappropriate scanned over charges. Times that by the volume of customers shopping there, "Hey, That's a lotta cabbage!" Call the San Mateo DA's Office and they will probably tell you they are too busy to investigate because they are concentrating on prosecuting those mom & pop restaurants that failed to completely adhere to their close down restrictions. Long time shopper here but I've had it. I did not intend to post such a lengthy post or sound like a public service announcement, but I remember when shopping here was nice. The supermarket is a neighborhood gathering place were you meet your friends and neighbors and customer loyalty meant something. Maybe it all changed with the Albertson's Corporate buy out of the Safeway chain. This store's track record over the years cannot be dismissed due to the present Covid Pandemic. I am an evacuee from the Kincade Fire (Windsor). We came in tired and hungry, ready to redeem a digitally sent Safeway cash card from my church. The print out that I had was not sufficient because it did not have the barcode on it. I think the gentleman who helped me was a manager or a shift leader, named (Chris). Instead of turning us away, he bought us a gift card with his own money to help me and my family. I like this Safeway. It's a big store that literally has everything that you need. Seriously, I've never had a situation when I could not find anything i needed in here. I am especially thankful to their florist department, girls their are great at making beautiful flower arrangements. Starbucks right there in the store is always a good spot for a quick latte. A wide variety of produce of course is the main advantage of this store. This Safeway has a large parking lot that is shared with a few other stores. It's a nice shopping plaza in a good neighborhood, we love coming here to shop and to just hang out at the neighboring restaurants. read more

Even though the store looks nice and clean, they have the worst deli of any Safeway I have ever been to. I went there to get a sandwich for lunch today and was really looking forward to it. I ordered a chicken with provolone on a roll. First the dude puts mustard and mayo on the bread, then chicken, cheese and then puts it in the oven. While the sandwich was in the over he touched every trashcan around him without changing glove, I was disgusted. Then bring out the sandwich out the oven and the cheese was not even on the sandwich. I gave up and told him I changed my mind and waked away. I really though they have standards the follow. Plus isn't there some type of food regulation about making food and touching trash. Went to the store to buy a gift card. On a display where you get in line for checkout was what I thought was a gift card with a VISA logo. Turns out it is actually a netspend re-loadable bank card and if you call the 1866 number it is all automated and has no customer service. Go online and click customer service and nothing happens. Why would safeway mix these cards in with the gift cards? So I had to call safeway customer service and talk to the gift card department and hopefully I may get a refund. The store manager should not allow re-loadable bank cards to be mixed in with the gift cards. read more

Over the past few years, service at this Safeway store has gotten worse. Many times I've waited in line for 15 minutes or more at 8 or 9 PM. They don't open enough checkout lines, and if you buy a bottle of wine, you can't go through the self-checkout. I started going out of my way to avoid this Safeway, even though it is the closest and most convenient store for me. Instead, I take my business to Trader Joe's, Lunardi's, Whole Foods. the store itself looks clean, but I found that some less common items have been removed from the selection. While there are still 500+ kinds of sugar-packed cereals in the breakfast isle, I found that simple things like fresh yeast has vanished some time ago. Or, if you want to buy some less common flours or grains, you're out of luck, too. I don't need those items often, but I appreciate to have a shopping alternative that carries these items. That's why I take my money somewhere else more often than I used to. read more

This safeway is on the smaller side but I find deals here all the time :-) I love the extra large kombuchas, organic produce, seasonal floral plants, deli free range rotisserie chicken, it's a convenient location for me!!! Cashier at register 4, 9:30pm on 3/28/19 did not even acknowledge me. The entire time I was in line and while she was ringing me up she was talking about how bad management was to a co worker who was making a purchase in front of me. She made comments about "having someone to hit her manager for her" it was so rude. I'm a regular customer at this Safeway and they are all usually so friendly. Just could not understand the unprofessionalism as I work customer service too and know how important it is for business. Maybe hire people who actually want a job.
