For the second time in a row, there weren't enough checkers open and I waited in a long line and then a new checker opens and allows people behind me to run to the new checker's aisle to be served right away. Almost every other market tells the person next in line to come to the new line since they've been waiting the longest. A Safeway employee's mask was around his neck - not covering his face at all. I called ten minutes after leaving the store and spoke to Kathryn, the store manager. She told me it's tough to wear a mask, uncomfortable and hard to breathe for the employees so she understands why they take the masks off. If anyone else encounters this at Safeway or another business, it takes thirty seconds to report a COVID safety hazard to San Mateo county business compliance referral task force. 1 checkers really....the line was so long. I ask if another checker could come to help and the lady ignored me. I asked a second time and she grunted at me. I had to use self check out and used 7 bags. You can imagine how long that took. The lady I charge of the self check out was so upset and had the worst attitude.( mind you same lady who would not call for back up) I don't understand she was slamming my items around and so unpleasant. Buyer beware - this safeway location is now selling bad beef coated with food coloring. I bought 3lbs of 93% fat free ground beef (which was bright red on the outside) on Monday evening and when I opened the package once I got home, I noticed a slight bad smell, then when I broke into the meat it had a really foul smell and was very brown. So, be VERY careful when buying ground beef from Safeway! I had the same experience at the San Mateo El Camino location and got sick after trying it. read more

Who leaves a yelp review for Safeway? I can't believe I'm doing this, but they were just working so hard. Anyway, I had a nice chat with the checkout person (Kyle?) who actually seemed happy even though he was due for a break. The manager Sheila gave my toddler a balloon even though it was busy and her co-workers were asking her stuff about scheduling, and earlier I had noticed her running around helping other people. The asian lady giving us watermelon samples was cool. To top it off Matthew(?) collecting shopping carts stopped to take away our cart even as he was busy hustling. I mean our baby is really cute but the service here could not be explained by that alone. I don't have a ton of mortal enemies, but if I did a headcount I'd say about 50% of my sh*t-list consists of various chain grocery stores. Even though I'm super new to the area, Safeway has already bought itself a one-way ticket to I-hate-you town. Maybe I'm just naturally hangry, but there's something about being around food that really makes me go all Primal Rage in places like this. First of all, it's expensive as sh*t. Like, I came here and left, then went to Whole Foods to save some money on the same stuff that was in better condition. In what world do we live in that I can get groceries cheaper at a Walgreens than at an actual grocery store? Welcome to CrazyTown. Second, what's up with the perpetual lines at every register? You can't even get into the actual aisles because the lines run so long and so slow, blocking everything. And it's always a thing. Go at 9am, go at 1:30pm, go at 4 in the morning -- there will always be an outrageous line situation happening on all fronts here. Third, that Safeway club card is a bunch of BS and they rule with an iron fist over giving you those discounts without your actual card on you. It's creepy how much they care about getting your consumer info over giving you any kind of customer service. Fourth, I came here late one night to get coffee. I walk over to the coffee aisle and a store employee looks me dead in the eye, grabs one of those nylon versions of a velvet rope, and closes the aisle in my face- literally was about 1 foot and a half away from him making full eye contact. I swear to god he had a smirk on his face when he did it. There I stood, 6-feet away from what I wanted, unable to get it because he was going to take his sweet ass time mopping and smirking in my direction. Cost/taste comparison of Safeway's "Molten Chocolate Chip Cookies" vs. Trader Joe's "Journey to the Center of the Cookie" Go ahead and stop right there if you're one of those people who only shops at local farmers markets... OK, here's my two cents about the competing products: Round 1: At $4.99, Safeway's Molten Chocolate Chip Cookies are exactly the same size as the $2.99 Journey to the Center of the Cookie Winner = Trader Joe's Round 2: Per instructions on the back of the box, cooked two Molten Chocolate Chip Cookies for 12 minutes at 400 degrees. The outside was kinda hard and not nearly as soft and gooey as the Journey to the Center of the Cookie. Winner = Trader Joe's Round 3: The parking lot at TJ's, no matter which location we're talking about, scares me. Whether customers are driving in said parking lot or trying to make it on foot, it's scary. Winner = Safeway For this particular product Trader Joe's takes the prize. Based on sheer value and consistency, their cookie is superior. However, Safeway is A-OK when it comes to an overall shopping experience. I've visited this store a few times and have yet to have a poor experience. The staff is friendly and the shelves and aisles always look clean and well stocked. I usually go early in the morning or late at night when fewer people are shopping. You can find some great deals through the app and the just for u program for extra savings. read more

I parked after circling 5 times, waited for this dumb bitch who saw me waiting, and didn't even have the courtesy to tell me she was gonna sit in her car and do nothing, and circled again to find another spot. Seriously at 7am on a Monday morning the shelves were empty and people were blocking the isles with products they needed to re-stock. I couldn't get to the yogurt, the frozen dinners were room temperature and the produce was boxed up and in the way of what was left. Often, towards the middle of the work day, I find myself yearning for a meal in between breakfast and dinner. Dinfast, I call it. Sometimes I come here when I have 20 minutes to waste standing in line for an ordinary $4.99 sandwich. According to my receipt, one of them is eventually supposed to be free. I'll let you know when that happens. I discovered a fun game to play here. Order a sandwich, a California Dreamin' for example, and say, "California Dreamin', no tomatoes please." Then stand there quietly and wait for the person to put tomatoes on it. When they do, (and they always do) politely repeat, "No tomatoes please," and then stand there feeling like an asshole for being so pushy. Don't forget to pretend the customers behind you in line don't hate your pissy guts. Oh, and then when you pay for the $4.99 sandwich with a $5 bill, stand there like an idiot trying to decide if you're supposed to wait for the penny change. I wait, but only because every one already hates my pissy guts. Subtract one star because they always have someone right outside the entrance collecting money for some dubious charity that I think might be a scam. Today I realized at the check out I left my valet at home but did have my check book... Immediately I let the cashier know that I've my check book but no ID with me... He said not a problem we just have to verify with a manager and call it in... After having all the other customers wait behind me in lane and having been handed over to the costumer service, after the manager was told before hand that I've no ID with me , I was asked for my ID again... Bottom line is that no one really knows what the procedure is in such a situation.... What a waste of time... This will have been my last visit to this particular location, despite the convenience of its location for me. :/ read more

WTF would I write about Safeway? No reason just to tell everyone about Mel. I figured most supermarkets and grocery places are the same. If you were to purchase alcohol or tabacco or whatever that ANY form of identification would suffice. My fiance got chastised by Mel, stating that he (Safeway) is not allowed to check out alcohol to anyone with an out-of-state driver's license (finance is freakin 31!), and protocol dictates that he must ask for the store manager to approve. However, Mel decided to ALLOW us this time to purchase the beer, and that it would do us better if we were to go ahead and get a Cali license. No offense to Mel, but my ass just got here two days ago before the incident. I don't care if it's a passport, a state ID, or driver's license from freakin Idaho, it's still valid. Demanded the store manager to validate it all and Mel kept on telling us we were making a big deal out of nothing.... Customer service call the next day dictated that there is no rule about out of state IDs needing verification from managers to purchase beer...hmmm.... Since we are out of beer, guess we'll go visit Mel again. read more

Likely this is not the best place to publish this but after receiving an extraordinarily patronizing nonresponse to an email I sent to Safeway Corporate I feel the need to share this event. On Wednesday February 18th as I pulled into the parking lot of the Safeway on 1100 El Camino Real in Belmont, I saw two individuals struggling just outside the doors of the grocery. One was clearly a Safeway employee and was struggling with an individual who appeared to have taken some items from the store. The individual who appeared to have taken something from the store escaped and began walking toward Ralston Ave. Being a good citizen (and a retired police officer) I immediately called the Belmont Police who dispatched Officers to the Safeway and to intercept the individual. I provided my name and information to the police however; the Safeway employee who I had seen earlier struggling with the individual appeared very unhappy that I had called police and despite the police attempting to introduce us dismissed me. I was not looking for a reward but a simple thank you, that may have been to much to ask (as I may hear from some of you) but it would have been what I would have wanted. read more

The layout in this Safeway is not as good as others, though the store itself is much newer than other Safeways in the area. I had great customer service so no complaints there. What's happened to this Safeway? Pharmacy is still good, but the service has become poor in the grocery and customer service area. Not checking to make sure the coupons I give them are scanned properly. Double scanning some items I purchase. Not being helpful in checking to see if additional items are in the back when the shelf is empty. They run out of sale items a lot too. If you go late at night, expect a long wait at the checkout. Better to go early in the am. It used to be my favorite place to shop and I used to come every week. Now, I only come when I have to adn I always have to scrutinize my receipt to make sure it's correct. read more

This review is for the bakery only. First off, the white cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream is the best. cake. ever. It's a huge hit at every birthday party and our guests can't get enough. You can get a similar cake from Sheng Kee for a lot more, but Safeway puts way more strawberries between the cake layers than SK. And it's THIS particular Safeway. We once hosted a birthday party in Sunnyvale and ordered the same cake from a different Safeway closer to our event and it was NOT the same. We ordered two full-sized sheet cakes from here for our daughter's Red Egg and Ginger party. People couldn't believe that the cake was from humble Safeway :) The bakery ladies were open to custom designs on the cake "as long as it's not too complicated" and asked me to bring in sketches of my ideas. One cake was white with flowers along the border and the Chinese "Double Happiness" character in red in the center. The other was a red, yellow, and pink dragon on a red air-brushed background. I prefer whipped cream on my cakes, but the dragon was heavy, so we used buttercream for that cake. Highly highly recommend this Safeway bakery! read more

Am I lame to write a review about a large grocery store chain? it's been on my mind for a while but after tonight I thought why the fuck not. First of all it's a large grocery store chain whatever anybody says on here they can care less about...you know how it is the "man" is making the money while us moderate folks stare at how much we can save with our safeway club memberships. I'm a night owl/early morning bug...the only convenient thing about safeway is that the majority of them are open 24/7 like 24hr fitness. Here's where things get funny and a slap in the face...It may be late at night but people are up, who the fuck opens ONE REGISTER WHEN THERES 20 PEOPLE IN LINE? AND WHO THE FUCK CLOSES THE SELF CHECK OUT LANES AT LIKE 9PM? Other than that safeway is safeway..I think I might just shell out the extra bucks by going to whole foods. I've had better customer experiences at whole foods vs safeway. In reality I hope safeway goes out of business as well as lucky's..these large grocery store chains have lost their touch. I've been trying to buy a specific box of matzo in the kosher section for several weeks. The problem was that, although they had ~20 boxes, all of them had expired a few months ago (yeah, I checked every one of them). That alone is a little concerning, since matzo usually has an expiration date 3 years later, so these boxes have been around for a long time. [I know this, since I just bought some from Nob Hill and they expire in 2017.] At one point I finally gave one of them to a cashier and told her all of the boxes were expired. She clearly didn't care when I told her and that was proven by the presence of all of the expired boxes still there a couple weeks later. Another time I happen to come across the store manager and told him about this. I showed him the item, and he thanked me then promptly pulled every box from the shelf and carried them to the back of the store. He said with it being empty, it will finally get ordered and replaced. Yay! I checked back a couple weeks later, and the stock was full again. Yay?? Nay!! Every box was expired, with the exact same expiration date as the ones that the manager removed. I can only assume that someone took it from the back and restocked the shelf with the expired boxes. That's so damn ridiculous! Sadly this makes we wonder how many other items throughout the store they keep restocking with expired items. Guess I'll keep going back to Nob Hill... read more

If you want 5 STAR service, shop at this Safeway. They provide you a full deli and it does get packed here during lunch hours and pre-dinner, however, the service here is impeccable. They even offer a full sushi and you can make a special request when the sushi master is available. This is a bit small compare to some of the other Safeway, but their customer service here is just outstanding. They even have a cute corner Starbucks coffee inside and the ladies here are just lovely to chat with. I highly suggest you pay visit to this Safeway and you will experience that you have walked in to 5 stars grocery market with dedicated employees to help you with all your needs!! read more

As a student at NDNU, one of the first things you will find out about this neighborhood is that EVERYTHING here closes early. You would think that the Starbucks here would be open late since you know...college students nearby = business. But nope. Anyway, points for this Safeway because they're open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are two Safeways that run through Ralston Avenue. My roommate and I refer to this Safeway as "Big Safeway" and the other one (located near the Carlmont Shopping Plaza) as "Little Safeway". Little Safeway has your basics, but Big Safeway has your basics...and then some. The store is definitely larger, making it easier to navigate around and find what you're looking for. This is where I do a lot of my grocery shopping, since I live nearby and am carless. Easy walk, safe neighborhood - if you have a car - large parking lot, no annoying grocery shopping carts lying around between parking stalls. My friends and I also do a lot of late night runs here, if we're hungry, need drinks, ice cream, etc. Staff has always been friendly. I've been to this Safeway maybe more than a hundred times since I've lived nearby for the past four years. Never have I bumped into a rude worker. read more

Customer service is non existent here. Went in to grab flowers and the lady at the register is arguing with me about the price. I'm telling her she's over charging me and if she won't fix it I'll get the ones that she's charging me for. She brushes me off, won't get a manager to correct the issue and sends me to another employee who follows me to the flowers and sees that I'm correct. She gives me the difference and a $5 grocery card for the inconvenience. Shame cause all I wanted was the difference and she could have honored $2. This place is a grocery store...or so I am told. It's job is to stock food for customers to purchase except in the case of a hurricane where hoards of people come and buy flats of water and 150 cans of chili to get them through the storm. The produce section at this Safeway had ZERO mushrooms, ZERO lettuce, and stray vegetables all over the floor. There was also ZERO employees in produce which, given the pathetic scene make perfect sense. I came home, checked the weather. There had been no hurricane nor earthquake so it was just a typical Monday night at the produce-less Belmont Safeway. Oh yeah, the yogurt is a first-come-first-served proposition as well. read more
