The manager Erika does not wash her hands and doesn't make the employees she works with take off their aprons when they use the bathroom or go on a smoke break. They smoke cigarettes outside in their aprons and do not change into a new one after taking a smoke break outside. I have seen employees get out of their cars in their hot food bar aprons for work. I could count on one finger the employees who actually care about their work and customer service. The lines may go a bit quicker if the checker would've stopped pitching about having to work sick to the bagging person and they wouldn't stop to have little secret condos with each other. In line today, I'm trying to get my family home and these two are just dead assing it giving their opinions on work. The guy they were waiting on had too much patience and even commented on how it sucked he was sick and thanked them. He should've told them to shut up and do the job. My ice cream is melting while they are whining about the job and mean old management! I was at Safeway on hwy 20 thur evening to pick up a prescription and a display caught my eye. It was gravy packets on sale for .99, so I grabbed one. I paid for it at pharmacy, but it rang up $1.25. I said something and the clerk said take it up with customer service, so I did. Customer service lady said she had to verify the price I said ok there's a display by the pharmacy. She came back 5 min later and said that price expired a month ago. I said we'll your going to honor that price arnt you and she said no, it had the date printed on it so I dont have to honor it. I was shocked and left the store. That's bad business and being shady in my opinion. I always shop safeway, but will be rethinking where I shop at. Every single time at least one item is scanned at an incorrect price and then I have to go to customer service to address the error. The store policy, which is posted on every register, is that if item is charged at higher price than what is correct then you get item for free. When I state this and point to the sign the responses I have gotten from customer service person is they are confused and angry and have no idea this is their policy or a snotty eye roll. Prices should be what it shows on shelves. Employees need to be educated on the policy instead of making customer feel like they're the jerk for asking for it to be enforced. read more

Perhaps it best not to go in, based on the other reviews, but I have had fine experiences (about 4-5 of them) using Safeway's drive up and go (curbside pickup). First, the selection online is pretty good. Second, they're smart about substitutions (and even smarter about knowing what they have in stock and what they don't -- so I get maybe 2 tops per order). Third, they always come fast and the people who deliver out to your cars are always super-friendly. The key to this store might be curbside pickup (but don't anyone else or we'll ruin it). read more

Online ordering is a joke. I have a problem with each order. Too bad for me that Safeway is so close to my house or I would have given up by now. Soon, though. So far we've had: Thumb prints in the bread -twice Moldy cheese loaf Dented beer cans - twice "Out of stock" items that can immediately be ordered online or purchased in-store Substitutions from $.50 sale veges to $6 un-ripe veges If I do an online order, I know I have to wait to see what "isn't available" so I can then go inside the store and purchase it, because 90% of the time it is actually available. I then have to go home and check the online receipt vs what I ordered vs the price it was supposed to be, and then file a complaint online. After reading the Yelp reviews, I almost decided not to visit. However, I had a limited amount of time to get my groceries. I'm glad that I did visit I found items that I haven't found anywhere else in Bend. There is a very nice selection of prepared foods, produce, bread and meats. Everyone was very nice. If I could give negative stars I would!!! I I pull up at literally 953. They close at 10 at least that's what the website and sign on the door say. I've been off work for 6 weeks still having heard nothing from unemployment. I finally picked up a bit of work and All I needed was some cereal for some pre work energy and some dog food which is a literal personal emergency having ran out last night. Anyway I get to the door and some 19 year old brat is locking the door in my face saying "we close in 5 minutes " I reply cool I only need 2 things cereal and dog food. Undoubtedly the worst Safeway in Oregon, possibly the worst grocery store in the country. What I witnessed in the deli....filthy work areas and scales, coughing, sniffling counter people....NO cleanup between cutting various products on the slicers, etc....just generally a disgusting place, was enough to keep me from ever buying anything from that part of the store. Unbelievably, it doesn't get better at the checkout counter......slow, slow, slow, slow, slow, slow service. Did I mention it was SLOW? I hope so, because it was really, really S. L. O. W. I purchased a yogurt on Thursday evening from Safeway. Opened it Saturday morning and it had mold on top. According to the sell buy date the product should have been good for another 7 weeks. My 1 star review isn't because of the bad yogurt it is because when I tried to return it I was told I needed to return it to the same Safeway store where it was purchased. I won't be to that side of town for another week. I was also told I needed my receipt. Why would I have kept a receipt for a product I eat frequently. Safeway has a record of everything I've purchased because I enter my phone number at checkout. Whether I buy something at a Safeway in southern CA or Portland, ME - all Safeway stores should honor the product and replace it if it is defective. read more

Good grocery store with a nice selection of produce, bread, meats an canned goods. But don't expect to find any specialty goods like Mexican Velveeta or Louisiana spices. If you want speciality items go to Market of Choice or Newport market. But prices at Safeway are reasonable for the most part. I do hate the fact that you have to walk the store from one end to the other if you want bread & produce. Bread is at the far left side of the store an produce is at the opposite side with shampoo, cosmetics an garbage bags in the center. Why does one shop where they shop? Price? Convenience? Selection? Service? Well, this Safeway hits two of the four listed above for us, and those two are enough to make us regulars. So which two do it for us? CONVENIENCE Located on Bend's Eastside at Hwy 20 and 27th, hands down, this place is convenient for us. On our route to and from work, who can deny the simple convenience of zipping in and out to get a few things for dinner? Parking can be a bit cumbersome at peak times but still, we overcome for the location factor coming to and from work. SERVICE Customer service, to be specific. We've been shopping here for years and have gotten to know by sight, if not name, several of the employees which generally leads to friendly conversation. Be it the baggers, checkers, produce specialists, front end supervisors, assistant managers or store manager. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Smiles on their faces. It's pleasant. On the other hand: Price. Even with the Safeway Club Card, there are other less expensive options in town. The biggest competitor, along the same lines, being Albertson's and....we feel strongly that Albies is cheaper than Safeway. Buying the same items, it can be a huge difference. $10 to $20 cheaper (for us). Selection. Although not as limited as the North Albertson's, let's face it....for selection, some of the "independents" have these big chains beat hands down. Newport Market on the Westside comes to mind. Of course, you also PAY for that selection! Still, I won't say this Safeway has a poor selection, it's just that on occasion, I've come up short on finding what I need to learn later that they don't carry that item. Again, not a huge deal. 99% of what we need to purchase, this Safeway fits the bill. THIS-N-THAT (to use a category from a fellow Yelper): They have a pharmacy and some sort of a clinic---although it's taken FOREVER for this to open. Not planning on utilizing the clinic and as for the pharmacy? The one time we did, the service was less than stellar. I even complained to a buddy of mine who is a "big wig" at Safeway Corporate about it. However, when zipping down the back lane of the meat and dairy aisle you can't help but notice several people always seem to be in line for the pharmacy. Must work for some people. Just not us. While we are on it, let's mention accessibility. The aisles do get frustrating at times. Hard to pass another shopper without an "excuse me" to avoid a collision. With the aisles already so narrow, the abundant floor displays make this all the more annoying. I realize it's all about maximizing profits and dollars per square inch but really? Just say "no" sometimes and keep the aisle clear. From my "big wig" friend at Safeway Corporate, I've been told this is one of the busiest Safeway's in Oregon. It's draw is enormous. I don't doubt it. Rarely is it empty. From a freshness perspective, this usually means the shelves are continually restocked and as a consumer, that can be a positive! read more

Service at this Safeway Deli and checkout are underwhelming. Had to get the deli lady's attention, and even though I was the only customer, she didn't ask me how I wanted my roasted chicken breast sliced, and it was too thick for sandwiches. Doesn't want to waste meat so I just took it, but asked for my peppered turkey to be sliced more thin. Again, she didn't even offer to let me see how she sliced it! So now I'm paying $10 for meat I'm not happy with. When I went to the express check out, the lady saw I had my own bags, didn't give the discount, and DIDN'T PACK MY GROCERIES. She just handed them to me to pack myself. Fresh rolls in the bakery were hard. Service in the bakery was excellent, I was addressed immediately by friendly staff. Props for cleanliness of the store and for the produce section, which looks wonderful and appealing. But the service here (and the food selection) is why I go to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. It's a Safeway. I don't usually ask too much from a Safeway. You know, cuz it's a Safeway. My husband and I go in here A LOT because we live so close by and it's convenient. But lately when I need food items I find myself going to Wholefoods instead. The one food item we get (honestly less and less because it's so rarely good anymore) is the chicken tender sandwich. There is a gal in there, her name is something cool like Katerina, but I can't remember if that's actually it. She makes a great sandwich, and she always remembers us and what we like on our sandwiches. She's really great and honestly she deserves to work somewhere much better than this Safeway. I still get my lactose free milk here, and some drinks that are not sold elsewhere. I always buy necessities here, like feminine products, floss, toothpaste, toilet paper, etc because other stores that sell these things are on opposite sides of Bend and I really don't like getting on the high way now that so many damn people have moved here. Honestly feel like I'm gonna die every time I get in the car. This however, is not Safeway's fault and I can't remember why I've got on this tangent. Oh right, this Safeway is convenient. Also, they added a ton of self checkouts, which is great as long as the machine doesn't wig out because it can't sense the weight of that box of tampons you just put in the bagging area. There are some great people who work here that I consider almost acquaintances. There are also some people that I avoid checking out with, or if I see them working behind the deli counter I simply go without anything from the deli that day. This is the worst Safeway I have ever been to. This is supposedly the busiest location in Oregon, but as long in the past 10 years they have done NOTHING to help get customers checked out of the store efficiently. It is currently the busiest time of year and they have lines of 10-12 carts extending down the lanes and making it impossible to shop in the aisles. They don't even open up all the check stands when they have this many people in line! It is absolutely ridiculous! And the cashiers are super slow. I really hate to give one star reviews, but I just have to in this case. I have been so unhappy with this Safeway. The lines are always incredibly long. Even thought they have plenty of registers, they always seem understaffed. I have waited a LONG time in line here and have just stopped going as a result. I was actually in a hurry once on my way to work with only one item in my hand, waiting in the express line, and had to put my item down and run out the door because it was taking so long. I mean, that's pretty bad. I was in line for about seven minutes - in the express line! Also, their deli department is awful! I've stood there, not just waiting for service, but waiting for someone to even acknowledge my presence for far longer than I'd like to admit. The employees just seem to put their heads down and ignore customers when a line begins to form. It's so weird. Coming form the service industry myself, I've always been of the philosophy that as a customer, sometimes you simply get what you give (i.e. if you're a jerk, you're probably going to get bad service more than other people) but hey - they didn't even give me a chance to be a jerk! I want that chance, man. And I also really, really wanted those chicken strips. But alas, I walked away after what seemed like an eternity of...waiting. read more

Every time I go into this store I am disappointed and quite shocked with exorbitant prices. Even when I use coupons, I walk out of the store with way less food for way more than I pay anywhere else --most times I feel like I just bought from a convenience store (super high prices for the convenience) and not a neighborhood grocery store. The service is subpar --not enough cashiers for the volume of people. Although they are mostly friendly, friendly service is sometimes lacking due to the overload of work piled on the front end people. read more

This is the worst pharmacy experience I've ever had in my life. Went in a few hours after going to Urgent Care on a Thursday to pick up three prescriptions. (Because I know from experience coming here that it's not even worth it to try coming to pick something up right after the doctor.) Got told it would be thirty minutes. Went out to my car and waited, came back in and they hadn't started on them. Got told it would be just couple minutes. I got called back up to the counter 40 minutes later and received two of my prescriptions. The third and most important I was told is 'out of stock' and to come back Friday. Came back in the next day and got told it should be back in stock in two more days (Monday). Meanwhile, I'm getting more sick because I don't have the necessary prescription. Came back in today and they didn't have it and didn't know when it would be in stock. Wish I had known sooner that I could have had it transferred to another pharmacy, because I would have done that in a heartbeat. Got the prescription transferred to Fred Meyers Pharmacy and they had it filled within minutes (after the five hours it took Safeway to simply fax it to them after multiple calls and faxes from myself and Fred Meyer). I have been dealing with the Safeway pharmacy for 8+ years, and after this, I will never have another prescription sent to them ever again. Worst pharmacy in Bend. They take sometime days to fill a prescription and when they leave me a message telling me my prescription is ready for pick up, then I expect it to be ready. Instead I get a million and one excuses. Today their excuse was that the refill that I called in 3 days ago ended up at Fred Meyer Pharmacy somehow. Yet I called it in myself and the prescription was originally filled at that Safeway, so how exactly did Fred Meyer have it? A mystery...I think not. A load of b.s. more like it. It's Safeway. If you are used to shopping at Safeway, this is a nice one. I shop here for the convenience. Sure, I could go to a couple lower priced stores, but the money I would save would be lost on the gasoline and mileage on my car. Staff here are super nice, genuine and helpful. If you have a concern, they make it right, no stress. Or, the manager calls you to discuss it, or the headquarters calls you to help. They are always super nice and whenever I have asked to have an item carried, there it is on the shelf within a couple weeks. This is a VERY busy Safeway for multiple reasons. -It's next to Costco -If you live east of Bend (even hundreds of miles east) this is the closest grocery store -Retirement communities nearby -The first week of the month is super busy when all the Oregon Trail cards get reloaded and people get paid. Safeway has some great discounts that help even out the comparison prices: -Gas discounts at Safeway and Chevron Stations -$10 off coupon each month in The Bend Bulletin (first Tuesday) -Just for You electronic coupons, based on your spending. You have to pre-load them on your card. So, you get discounts on the items you buy the most. I'm very happy shopping here. read more
