Don't trust them for doing a pick up order. They canceled my order. Don't bother calling them to try and reschedule. Had to call twice waiting over an hour each time to get live human. They close at a certain time and don't tell you until you're disconnected. Live human says they can't do anything. Know things are crazy but Safeway is making a ton of money right now. It is only fair to reschedule what you cancel. They won't even do that. Go somewhere else. System requires one star to post but they don't deserve that. read more

I've shopped here for decades and I know people complained when it was Safeway owned, but after a good beginning with Albertson's, this store has taken a nosedive. They recently put not only hard liquor, but sundries such as toothpaste and toothbrushes behind glass doors. Now we're supposed to push a call button (aisle 14's was out of commission for weeks) and one of the very few baggers on duty is supposed to respond as customer service. Ha! Not only is the store notoriously understaffed (even during the 2016 Christmas season) - this is the Friday of President's Day weekend, the parking lot was full and yet only 5 out of 10 aisles were manned with checkers at 3 o'clock in the afternoon and the line for self-check strung down an aisle. The icing on the cake was in the meat department today. Hubby had been there yesterday looking at ham, but didn't buy it because the sell by date was today - so he was hoping they'd put out fresh. I took a look at them. The sell-by date wasn't today. It was JANUARY 17, and the official packing date on the Hormel Cure 81 package was back in December. I like the staff they have, but they need to hire twice as many, and I like their products (I saw Aleppo pepper and Harrisa in the spice section)... so what is wrong with the management? Do they want the store to do poorly as an excuse to close it? Frankly this Safeway is looking like the Macy's in Stonestown did last year - which was a precursor to closing the store and selling the building this year. read more

Today was my first time at this Safeway. I came with my Granny who was excited about the remodel. My Granny is in her 80s and will only shop at Safeway. The one star is for the customer service which can really ruin an experience and in this case it ruined it for the both of us. My Granny has a handicap placard but there wasn't any parking so I dropped her off in the front and went to find a park. My plan was to go get a drink from Starbucks, sit in the cafe area and wait for her to be done. When I went to order my drink the person at the counter told me that it would be an extra 60 cents for the modification. This drink is something that I order all the time at every Starbucks I go to. I go to Starbucks everyday and have never been charged an extra 60 cents. When I informed her of this she stated she needed to charge me. Of course I told her thanks but no thanks. Fast forward 30 minutes and my Granny and I are in line she has coupons and rain checks. I am bagging while Russell the slowest checker in the world is scanning the groceries and looking at the rain checks as if they were ones we printed off at our home printer. He scans two bags a shrimp but I can't reach one of them so I ask my Granny to pass me the bag. The bag touches my finger tips and Russell snatches it from me. It startled me because I was already preparing to put it in the bag so I was looking away. When he snatched it my Granny and I looked at each other in shock. He could have simply said he still needed the bag of shrimp. My Granny wrote a check for the groceries like I said she is in her 80s she writes checks. Russell took the check and looked at it for a extremely long time before putting it through the register. It was a very awkward moment. The overall experience sucked. Parking is shitty, Starbucks fails, and Russell is slow, lacks enthusiasm, and slightly rude. I say slightly because he didn't say too much but the snatching and scrutinizing the rain checks and my Granny's personal check left a bad taste in my mouth. It was kind of embarrassing to have him look at everything for so long especially since there were other people waiting behind us probably thinking that she has a history of bad checks or something. If I ever come back to this store I will already have my Starbucks drink and will use self check out. read more

After this Safeway was remodeled a few years ago, it was my main grocery store as everything was new, efficiently run, and their special deals were awesome. I went every week. But for the past 3+ years, there are long waits for everything, especially their deli specials, and now I avoid shopping there at all. They should get zero stars! Today I went in for their fried chicken special and some other grocery items, but there were 30 people waiting in line at 11.15 am, with NO chicken in sight. So instead of wasting time, I DID ALL MY SHOPPING AT TRADER JOE'S! In the past, there was cold fried chicken in the refrigerated section, and more employees dedicated to making sure customers didn't have to wait for more than 10 - 15 minutes. Those days are long gone thanks to whoever is currently managing this particular Safeway. There were definitely enough employees behind the counter - 2 fully dedicated to making sushi for the refrigerated section that was ALREADY FULL. Added note, all the employees working there are usually pleasant and helpful, so they are NOT the problem as the lack of staff is a mgmt issue. I've also had a few problems at other SF Safeways (Diamond Hgts, Noriega, Taraval, etc.), but rarely out of SF (San Bruno, Foster City, Napa). So whoever is the SF/Westlake regional manager is doing a lousy job. Guess I'll just take my business to Lucky's and Trader Joe's. read more

A regular Safeway with lots of fresh and hot food, a large and pleasantly presented produce section and a pharmacy. Not to mention the Starbucks. Parking can be a bit tricky as the lot is cramped - pretty sure there's the occassional accident where people bump into each other when backing up. So you'd need to be a little bit stress resistant here. Other than that, solid experience. read more

This is the worst Safeway I have ever been too! The employees are very unprofessional. The checkers are joking and carrying on conversations with each other, including the managers. They aren't paying attention to the customers. They always have long ass lines and not enough cashiers...no matter what time you go here. I'm so glad I no longer live near this Safeway. Even though I live in the Sunset district, I usually end up doing my shopping at this Safeway because it's close to where my daughter's daycare is, so I just swing by after I pick her up. This location definitely needs a makeover. I wonder why it hasn't gotten one yet, like most of the other Safeways around the Bay area (even the one at Fillmore & Webster). It looks so old inside. Also, the layout of things is kind of dumb. Why are the diapers and baby things in the same aisle as the ice cream? Weird. The last time I was there I waited a solid ten minutes in line at the deli. They only had two people working (two very INEFFICIENT people). I got some chicken salad and potato salad (I love their deviled egg potato salad). When I got home I made some sandwiches and I found a bone in the chicken salad! ALL BAD. Luckily it was in mine and not my daughter's. Another issue I have with this Safeway is the carts. My kid is two, and if she's not buckled in she'll stand up or jump right out of the cart. I'd say a good quarter of the carts don't have the buckles or the buckles are broken. So I spend several minutes trying to find one with buckles that work or have them at all. I have to admit that I've never had the issue with long lines. Whenever I go it seems like there's always a free line and plenty of cashiers working. They also have pretty good specials, with prices rivaling Target on some things. Most of the staff there is very friendly and helpful (minus the deli). Hopefully Safeway corporate will get their act together and give this location a much-needed remodel (and some new carts!). read more

in the 30 some odd years I have been going to Safeway, this is the worst one I have been to. Tonight I went to purchase a couple of items along with my sister who was visiting on a rare visit. What was supposed to be a quick errand turned into an unpleasant wait in a long queue and a waste of time due to the fact that they only had two checkout lanes open when they had around fifty patrons in queue. Terrible produce that comes in 2 states... 1) Under-ripe and will never ripen and 2) Rotten. Can't tell you the number of times I've had to throw produce away from there because it rotted the next day. You really have to pick through and carefully examine everything. I picked up a tomato one time only to have my fingers sink into the back of it which was black and grey with mold. Lines, lines, lines! Would it kill them to have more than one register open in the evening? Their corporate policy is to open another register when there are more than 3 people in line. Regardless of how many times they've been informed of the policy they just don't do it. Forget about coming in earlier or in the afternoon. They'll have more check stands open but you'll still be behind 8 or 9 people regardless. read more

The worst grocery store I have ever had the pain of living near. When I moved into Westlake Apartments, I did not have a car. This meant frequent trips to the 7th circle of Hell, AKA Westlake Safeway. Let me set your expectations if you ever are forced to go here: 1. You WILL leave without finding one of the items you needed. Even if you need only the most basic things--an empty shelf will stare blankly and uncaringly at you. ESPECIALLY if your favorite item had the misfortune of being on sale. Any good deal sale items WILL be out of stock. I've never been offered a raincheck, so I don't know if they do those. A mystery was solved when I saw a guy buying many CASES of cereal that was on sale, obviously to sell for $6 a box in his overpriced bodega. The clerks at this store were allowing him to do this, so I guess they don't give a crap about selling to dealers instead of keeping products in stock for normal customers. I'd have banned his ass from the store. 2. You WILL wait in a long-ass line. Probably for 15 minutes. The lines often stretch down the aisles, especially during the hours when people actually shop. Like 3PM-11PM. The reason for this is that Safeway never opens more than about 2-3 registers no matter what. They probably don't even have the key to any of the other ones anymore. Usually you get one express lane and 1-2 others and that's it. 3. Be on the lookout for expired food. Once, I found food that had expired over a month in the past... Other times I found plenty of multi-week expired food. Read the dates on EVERYTHING. 4. There are a couple of genuinely nice people who work there that I started to recognize. But most of the clerks will only grudgingly speak to you in English if you really pin them down and ask a question, the rest of the time they will ignore you and text on their phones or, more often, chat amongst themselves while avoiding doing their jobs. 5. Oh, the panhandlers! Always some sketchy guy poised right outside the exit, hassling you on the way both in and out to make a "donation," allegedly for some charity for abused women or something, but there's no way to know if he's just dumping that coffee can into his pocket at the end of every night. Anyway, don't give these clowns any money. 6. This store hasn't seen a remodel since approximately 1989. It appears to be casually cleaned from time to time, and it's not exactly a gross dirty store, but it's far from sparkling. 7. It is the only Safeway in the world that doesn't have a pharmacy, so hopefully you don't need that cos you'll need to make another stop. 8. Parking isn't great, although it's no problem compared to Trader Joe's on the other side of the mall, where people ravenously rev their engines and race to beat each other whenever those white reverse lights come on. 9. They will be mystified at pronouncing any multi-syllable surname you may have. No matter how simple you think your name is, they will somehow find a way to utterly butcher it. Just that final tiny annoyance to cap off your trip (well, second-to-last since you'll need to pass the panhandlers again to get out). To conclude, don't ever bother going here unless you're forced to. Since you will have to make another stop to find the out-of-stock stuff anyway, just go to that other place instead and save yourself the torment of shopping here. read more

Not to mention that lines inside get ridiculously long, staff is unhelpful and they like to announce their closing early, even though their posted hours say otherwise. I have few words of praise for any Safeway, but this one's not bad. Despite being crowded I've found it well-stocked in my visits. Plus, it's in the same shopping center as a Trader Joe's, which allows me to pick up what I can at Trader Joe's and the rest here. So while there's fun to be had in hating the big, bad, scary corporation, and, to be sure, Safeway's produce does not stand up to a market nor do its prices stand up to Trader Joe's, they do serve a purpose, especially for people who aren't that into cooking and just want to get what they need quickly and easily. In spite of all the construction going on, and the dust on my peanut butter, there is SO much to be said for service. Never had such an experience in a grocery store. Within 2 minutes of being inside, 3 employees had said 'hello'! Then when I couldn't find the eggs, asked the guy in the seafood department where they were. He not only told me where they were, but offered to show me, AND noticed the loaf of bread I had in my basket & informed me it was 'Buy 1, Get 1 Free'. Saved me some money. From the SEAFOOD department! The place does get pretty packed out in the evenings, but you gotta appreciate employees that give a damn & actually seem to enjoy their job. read more

This is the worst Safeway in the universe. The lines are inexcusably long at random times, not just between 5-7 as one might expect. It is not uncommon for each cue to be over 10 customers long, stretching halfway to the rear of the store, with only two people checking! Obviously the managers of this store are more interested in cutting labor costs and turning profits than pleasing customers, knowing there aren't any comparable supermarkets in the area. I've been going to this store for years, and they have never made an adjustment. They make customers wait because they can, and they need to be called out. The only star I'm giving this atrocious Safeway is for the employees, who for the most part are very friendly and helpful. If only the greedy ones in charge would give them more hours or hire more people, this would be a decent store. As it is, no way. read more

This update is long overdue! Everything has changed for the better (the last few years) since my last review in 2008! I still don't come to this location often since I'm hardly ever in the area. I wanted to give a shout out to Ron who works in the bakery department. Earlier tonight I was standing in his department while looking on the Safeway app on my phone. Ron came over and asked if I needed help. I told him no and I was just looking on my phone. He then asked if I wanted a sample. I said "sure!" and he goes behind the counter to grab a tray of cookies. I grabbed one and so did my daughter. For the curious folks- red velvet with white chocolate chips! So good! He was very friendly and seemed to genuinely want to talk to customers. These days that's quite rare. I also had a nice interaction with my cashier and the guy who helped with my refund. Forgot to look at their name tags so can't give shout outs to them by name. :( Sometimes it's nice to have small talk besides the usual "your total is X". Well that's just my opinion. I generally love Safeway (my local one is the Menlo Park El Camino location, and I also love the "big gay safeway" around 14th/Church in SF. Safeway Daly City, however, sucks, at least for deli food. Why? No freshly-prepared sushi, and limited selection otherwise of vegetarian and/or asian deli food. Is the problem that Daly City doesn't have enough Asians or people who like Asian food to support it? Highly doubtful! I called to find out if their deli offered Chinese takeout, like the one in Redwood City. A lady answered who couldn't speak English, then handed the phone to someone else who hung up on me! I tried calling again them again and was on hold for nearly 20 minutes! I got frustrated so I drove all the way there in person. It turns out they do offer it. This Safeway is very different from the ones in San Francisco. In SF they don't use plastic bags anymore, only paper. Here, they seem to loveee plastic. The checker was about to smother my goods in non-biodegradable opaqueness when luckily I said "STOP MA'AM" (in my head). I asked for double bagged paper instead! Look at me being environmentally conscious. Surprise surprise. My paper bags had no handles! That was uber fun to carry to the parking lot. I really don't like this place. Every time I go I experience long lines and expensive, over ripe (and scant) produce. I can accept that at night there are going to be lines. People want their booze and want their dinners, but on a regular midday? If you have lines more than six people deep, you need more than two goddamn cashiers. On top of it all, the store consistently looks pretty trashy. Everything's well stocked, but the layout's terrible. Additionally, it seems every single time I come here, my car walks away with a new dent or scrape. I'll give them some credit because there really isn't another grocery store in Daly City. However, it still needs a lot of improvement. My boyfriend and I both agree that the number one issue is the lack of staff. Every time we go there no matter if it is in the afternoon or later on at night there are only 2 check out lanes opened. I understand they put self checkout to help traffic. However, you would think that at your busiest time you would have more lanes opened. Also, more often than not the shelves are hardly stocked. I ate here today because I had to grab something and just thought I'd get something to eat since I was there. BIG BIG BIG MISTAKE. The Chow mein was DISGUSTING. Hard, stail, just gross. This week, I just had the most impeccable service that I could have ever imagined from any type of Supermarket. I was standing in a line of 8 people deep at the customer service counter and a lovely employee, Jennifer came to relieve the line a little bit. I was really just expecting to do a quick transaction, in and out, but she was so courteous and professional. She went above and beyond my expectations that I would expect from any type of store, period. She showed me that she truly cares and puts the customer first, made me and my family very appreciative of what she did. I don't know what position Jennifer holds at Safeway. But I do know for sure if she was on the floor and was an acting manager, she would not have let that WIC incident to occur that Jazmin B reviewed about recently. I come in to this Safeway about 4x a month. There's always parking here no matter what time of day. Unlike some of the reviewers here that complains about the parking, I do not expect to park in front. People that complain about this are most likely people that makes up the obesity of America and are too lazy to walk. I live in the city and I'm happy to be able to park within 5 blocks of where I live. There seems to be a lot of negative reviews about this place. Some are most likely exaggerated like the ones that said that they were in line for 30 mins to check out. THIS IS TOTALLY BULL! Come on guys, 30 mins is a long time. Oh dear. I've had other bad experiences that I wanted to write about but I thought - nah, I'll cut em some slack. Tonight I'm just DONE. The store closes as midnight for restocking yet beginning about 9 p.m. there are pallets and pallet carts driving all over the store. The clerks who are stocking are dropping individual packages to the floor to cut open and shelve. So loud... overwhelming... stressful. Very nearly left for this reason alone tonight. We shopped for about an hour then climbed into line... for another 30 minutes including a woman cutting in line and pretending she didn't see the rest of the line behind her. I chose to hold my tongue and just roll my eyes. The people behind me would have had her lynched since cutting in line delays everyones check out. Once to the register we meet up with cashier Maria M. who is annoyed there are customers in her line and keeps telling people "I'm closed" "don't come here" "go away" - but see she was the only cashier at ANY of the registers so sorry Maria M. you can't be closed. Next we shop based on the ad plus sales, store coupons and manufacturer coupons. We're methodical and careful to make sure we stack them carefully and correctly being sure we bought what the coupon is for and that it is not expired. We were confident.... It seems that Maria M. is the messenger that this Safeway does not accept Safeway store coupons printed from Coupons.com and assures me she knows it because there is something in the breakroom that tells her so. We ask for a manager and are told that there is no manager on tonight. We explained to her that while they are printed on a printer this is what has to happen when you print them from coupons.com because that is how it works.... no she was having none of it. We told her to remove any item that belonged to a coupon she was refusing to take.... her attitude got worse. I was too tired to deal with it. The store lost out on about $40 of our sale - though maybe we should have just walked away from ALL the items in our grocery order rather than selectively pulling items. We will write to the manager of the store though prior experience tells us that Safeway doesn't care which is sad. I think we'll be spending some additional time at Lucky if we really must shop. I'm hoping to move somewhere that has Cub or Rainbow again. -Bridget read more

The employees here are very friendly and helpful, the store is well maintained and clean, but the lines here are always a havoc to have to endure, especially between peak hours of 3PM-6PM. You could use the self checkout lines, but those are honestly a joke to hassle with, they are useful for a few items, but often times items won't scan correctly and need a sales associate to override them, which usually takes more time than just sticking it out in the mile long lines. read more

I like how this Safeway is in the same shopping center as Trader Joe's. The renovation appears to be complete, so that's a welcome relief. However, make sure to bring your reusable cloth bags here. They bag your groceries in plastic bags by default. When I asked if they had paper bags, they confirmed that they do, but their paper bags don't have handles. I think we all know that paper grocery bags without handles suck if you're buying a ton of groceries. The fact that their paper bags don't have handles pretty much require you to either a) be all unenvironmental and deal with the shitty plastic grocery bags or b) fork over extra $$$ to buy some reusable Safeway bags. I went to buy some ribeye steaks lately. I usually am very conscientious about picking quality meat. What I noticed when I got home is that the Safeway Meat packers now try to hide bad cuts of beef underneath better cuts and strategically place stickers to cover the lower quality dry looking meat. I don't think that the shoppers who fill the delivery orders can read, or care to. I have stated 'NO SUBSTITUTIONS' or DON'T SUBSTITUTE ANYTHING IN THIS ORDER' every time I order delivered groceries from Safeway. And, yet, for the last 4-5 orders, they substitute an out of stock item with something I don't want and, definitely, won't accept. And, so, every time this happens, I need to get a refund for the substituted item and then throw it in the garbage. Today they substituted a CHOCOLATE pie for a cream cheese pie. I had to throw it out as I'm allergic to chocolate. I had to call, get the refund and waste my valuable time dealing with this same problem over and over and over. I don't want a stranger deciding what product to put in my order. what is it about 'DON'T SUBSTITUTE' that they don't understand? Not sure what to think about this place except it needs work. I was there a few days and I noticed a large display of strawberry boxes with mold overflowing on many strawberries. It was pretty disgusting. And today I was walking slowly when I fell all of a sudden. I had fallen in a puddle of water and next to it was a roll of used paper towel. Apparently the person in charge of that section of the store did not finish his job of cleaning it. He came to retrieve his items after the store manager was called and just said sorry. This one cashier named ESPIE was very rude, I came there to get some formula for my son which is WIC, I only got 4 cans so I lined up on below 5 items. When I'm approaching her she said "Oh no WIC. Please line up on another cashier" Which is a very long line they only have two cashiers at that time! Well so I just paid the non-wic items I have for another transacrion, but then another cashier came changed her post, I asked her if that line doesn't accept WIC she said no we should accept WIC all the time. I was furious and mad at that Espie spanish lady!! I will definitely go back to that branch and talk to the manager about her! She should learn how to do proper customer service. I'm over this construction.. it's just such a hassle. I feel like it has been going on for years. When will this be over? The items are limited due to the construction, things are placed in the strangest locations, some aisle have wire wracks as temporary holding places. Staff are friendly and helpful but they are always running around like chickens and can be hard to track down for a simple questions.
