I occasionally shop very early in the morning before work. While I don't expect bubbly Safeway workers at that hour, I certainly don't appreciate the grumpy and rude employees who work the aisles and ruin anybody's day. If they aren't happy working that early, perhaps you should assign employees who are okay with the early morning shift. Your customers do not deserve rude treatment, especially when we are choosing to shop at your store! read more

I've been coming to this Safeway ever since I was probably 10 years old when I first moved to the Westlake area. It has changed significantly from what it was before. The aisle's inside are a little bit more organized and products are easier to locate. Parking around Westlake Shopping Center is horrific. It's like a junkyard around here, especially on weekends. The location is definitely is not its strong suit. Quality and prices are fine. I always have no problem finding what I need here. The fresh produce is easily accessible, and always neat. The aisle's are well organized. You an easily find each section within the aisle. There's a Starbucks and Well's Fargo inside which is very convenient. Having said that, the reason why I have to give this Safeway a 2 star is because of its front end and customer service. Problem #1: Self-checkout. I love doing self-checkout, since I'm not much of a bulk buyer and I do buy 5 things or less when I visit, but where it's located is a hassle. There's no proper line for it when it gets busy. Customer's literally have to file in line in the cleaning supplies section. Since it's also in the middle of the front end just by Starbucks, and there's not much room to move, the line sometimes gets confusing and scattered. The staff who's in charge of the self-checkout are always slow to help out each customers, which results in the line being backed up. Not to mention 2-3 of the 8 self-checkouts are always down. Problem #2: Deli Staff. Very, very slow and disorganized. Now, I'm quite a patient person, I don't even mind rude customer service since I've worked in retail myself, and I get it. But the people who work in the fresh deli and food court are extremely slow in how they approach customers. It seems like 90% of the time, they don't know what they're doing or where anything is. They seem lost. The way the deli section is ran is also problematic. There's no queue or number on who's next. Customer's just scatter around and point to each other on who's next in line. To which it creates the problem of staff taking customers who weren't next, and creating conflicts. Problem #3: Customer Service, Front End. Poorly ran. A lot of the time, no one is there to help. When you do ask, it seems like it's a hassle for them to even get someone to help you. There was one instance where I needed help with a return and I waited 10 minutes. Then I asked if anyone could help me, they said ok. I waited for another 25 minutes. Finally someone shows up, and she literally looked at me and said, "I know you waited a while, but I was having lunch." And every time I've here, it's the same story, and the same rude reaction to whoever is in line. Overall, if you're here to buy grocery, you really aren't going to have much problem. But if you want to deal with anyone in the front end, good luck. The way the place is structured in the front area, is horrible, the staff are clueless and rude. Safeway has never been known for great customer service. So take it for what it is and just go about your way. read more

The one thing I didn't like was that the other door towards the end by the flower section is not open even though the COVID cases are down. I wish those doors will open cause it's a total inconvenience to make people enter in that one set of doors just saying make it more easier for people who want to park on that side to increase food traffic. read more

Today, I tried to use a Tillamook manufacturer's coupon which provided me a complementary item valued up to $18. The cashier picked it up and read it, but failed to apply the discount. The manager checked the register twice and could not locate the coupon while the employee was on break. Basically, the employee pocketed the coupon. This review is for the bakery department. Please do not order online because they do not follow customer instructions. I originally ordered one of their "valentines mini cakes". Online it was a pink cake with some flowers at the top, very simple and close to what I wanted. I wrote specifically what I wanted the cake to say in the designated box. I selected green for the message color. In the "NOTE TO THE BAKERY" box, I requested for the writing to be in all caps. I asked for the flowers to not be included on the cake. I even wrote the reason why I wanted the cake that way with the specific message, because it was a movie reference. I submitted the order and the next day I received an email saying that the order was accepted. I thought ok, cool, they understood the assignment. I am not from the area so the cake was for someone's birthday that I was in town celebrating. I figured I can pick it up before the dinner. When I arrived, the cake was not what I requested. The baker corrected my writing to what they felt was correct and did it in cursive. I felt my requests were small and straightforward. I didn't have the time to speak with them to fix it. I ended up buying frosting while I was there to fix it myself. It was just frustrating. Bakery shouldn't assume to fix a message. Since Safeway brand stores have gone through a major remodel. This in my opinion, is one of the better looking Safeway's that I've been too. Located in the smaller shopping center known as West Lake Shopping Ctr., this Safeway serves the needs of the neighborhood that's been established for a number of years now. With the new look the store seems fresher and more up to date with their service and brands that they provide to their customer. Wider aisles make it easier for people to go in and out of. I've even notice that the staff seem younger and more friendlier towards the customers. They are more eager to help you and go out of their way to make sure that everybody is well taken care of. Something that I found the older stores rarely provider. Their shelves are always fully stocked and if theres a chance that the product is out of stock, they make sure to go in the back and either located it or send you to the closest store that may provide it. All of this helps them to make sure they can achieve their overall goals. Their stores are also very clean and well kept. Spills are almost nonexistent and broken or cracked items are removed from eyesight almost immediately. Something I find very pleasant at this location. Unfortunately the pricing is standard which means that it's higher than what it should be but you get that with a major chain grocery store. Another callout is the parking situation. Although they have a good amount of parking spots and stalls, they're very tight and I find that people park so close to one another that is easy to come back and have your car dented or even damaged. They also don't seem to have enough carts for the amount of people from the area that shop there. I find that I have to go looking for cards because they're always gone or in the parking lot. But nothing too crazy happens here and it's a place that I've become acquainted with and appreciate the convenience and professionalism here. read more

Can't believe how I was treated here by their rude staff. I won't get into the long story but they overcharged me, I was laughed at in costumer service after the clerk took my $10 off coupon, and when I asked if it went through she said yes, but didn't check that it hadn't AND SHE KEPT IT. It wasn't until I got out to my car and had loaded all my groceries in my car, that I noticed she had been careless and not done what I asked, make sure the $10 off coupon went through. So I packed all my groceries back in the cart, and went back in. I went to customer service, and I was told to go wait again in a cashier line (by the lady who laughed at me and did nothing). The clerk Mirla for some reason decided she wanted to touch my personal bags and squeeze them to make sure no items were in there (they were empty), after all items had been refunded and re-rang. What really seems off about this is that anything in those bags would have been purchased and owned by me- I was getting my items REFUNDED, not purchasing them. I then told her that I would bag my groceries, but she refused to listen and bagged them into my bags, again touching my personal items without permission. This should be against Covid-19 policy. With the manager, she argued with me because they made a mistake and she couldn't read their own receipt. I told about a coupon I used, but she refused to pull it back out of the drawer (she had taken over that register). She never said ok that's why but argued I was wrong. I was accused of wanting money because they refunded an item for $4.99 that used a coupon then they rerung it at $7.99. The clerks involved were Rosario and Mirla. They weren't rude though, they just took my $10 coupon (a mistake), and were going through and touching my things. The manager Dania was rude, and didn't admit her mistake which caused me my third trip into the store. She said, " you want three dollars?" And quickly rung it up after arguing with me for over 5 minutes that I hadn't been charged more for the chicken the second time they rang it. I'll add my receipt to show it. And the girl behind the customer service desk, the young Asian lady she was the worse of all. She laughed and suggested I make the clerks take care of the problem and wait in line AGAIN. I handed Dania this receipt and she still didn't get it! She said no you were charged the same for the chicken. It's under deli and says Ckn Homestyle HOT. She also didn't get the math if $10- $7 = $3 , which I tried to explain before handing her the receipt. That was the $10 coupon minus the $7 extra items I bought equaled the $3 missing. I even tried to explain the $3 was probably from the $3 chicken coupon but she couldn't get it. She could only tell me what the computer had told her. 5/20/23 06:03 Westlake location, Cashier. I spoke to one of the workers who was stocking who was extremely pleasant, blessing to her. When I approached the cashier, I walked back and forth because I couldn't see any lights on and didn't see the self serves open, so when I ask, a man rudely responds that it's number seven the one with no rope (I just got off work 12 hour shift, you think I'm going to pay attention?), and when I got there I stated it would be easier to find with a light on, and he proceeds to ask if I'm an electrician, and I should fix it. If you're having a bad day stay home or don't even show up to work. I'm not expecting royal treatment because even being silent and guiding me politely would have been sufficient. What makes me irritated is the fact that I'm willing to pay as my religion forbids stealing, yet I get this kind of nonsense. This kind of action will only encourage theft. Second time I had a bad experience at this location, first was the handling of my daughters 1st bday cake during the height of COVID with no gloves, no hand washing, I was there as they handled the cake, propped open the box, and put it in, all while being hassled because the bakery doesn't know how to properly take orders. Considering how this location is being run, I doubt even asking for a manager or higher ups will be sufficient. If it's Black Friday.....DON'T COME HERE!!! The parking lot....clueless drivers and ridiculous parking. No one wants to let you over and the holiday spirit is NOT in FULL SWING! After some aggressive driving and moves in the lot and finally getting to a spot in the far back of the lot I was able to make my way into the store. Once inside I saw the masses of people looking to get their holiday spirits, side dishes, beer, and chicken. I guess chicken is the alternative to TURKEY!!! This was the first time that I came here and saw restocking of beer with a dolly parked in the aisle. The self checkout line is very helpful. Most people had a few items and were in this line which made for waiting in the other lines a bit smoother and quicker. Unfortunately, there were only 5 lanes opens which was HUGE DOWNER at the time. I actually think that more employees were working this day but they were scattered throughout the store doing various tasks. My only issues with this Safeway is that the fruit that I purchase from this store tends to spoils within 2 days. SERIOUSLY!! From the bananas to the melons. I don't know what it is about the fruit here but it is a problem! I have finally become fed up enough with Deli counter at this Safeway to write a one star review. While I appreciate diversity, I will challenge the fact that you are hiring people from different cultures to work at Deli, which are completely clueless to what Mortadella, or Hot Coppa, etc is. It has become an absolute struggle to order something at this place. Second: The fight for the right cut. These employees literally have no idea what is the desirable thickness for these meats, neither they respect what customer wants or says. I just had woman cut me Coppa almost 1/4" thick which is ridiculous, and when I told her that that is unacceptable she started arguing with me telling me that cut is thin enough. Are you kidding me? My family is from Mediterranean region. I grew up on that. Who the heck cuts that to quarter of an inch? Madness. I'm paying $17 a pound for that stuff. That is a fine product, with the steep price and lady I have a news for you: I as customer dictate what the right cut is or not!!!! No need to roll your eyes while cutting it real thin as it should be to begin with. First slice. First slice goes to garbage. You don't give exposed, oxidized first slice to customer ever. I believe this is some Safeway bs policy. You're not saving money that way, you just disgust people, as that's gross. To break that unwritten rule, and serve that. Was trying to buy alcohol and of course the cashier checked my ID. My DL card is expired but it is automatically extended by DMV. However, I went to DMV to get renew and got a temporary DL paper. The cashier grabbed my DL and swiped it in the system. She told me it's expired and I'm not allowed to purchase! Terrible pickup service. I pre-ordered my grocery for pickup, I was told to drive to the specified pickup area and call them, someone will bring the grocery out. One hour before the pickup, I was informed that the 16 items I ordered had only two items instock. Okay, I can understand that. When my son went to westlake, he couldn't see the sign, looked for it, asked the security guard, no one knew where it is. Instead, he had to go inside the store to ask, he went through two staff - one female employee didn't even use a face mask, they still didn't know where the pick up was or the parking for pickup was, until the manager came and pointed out the sign for the parking area was facing towards the store, not the parking lot. I've gone after work on three occasions between 5:30-6:30 PM, and despite workers behind the counter, they tell me they are closed. So here's the thing, if you need your standard grocery items, this Safeway location is fine. If you need to put in a catering order form the deli, do not come here. I called for an event we're having at my job. I wanted to place a simple order for pick up. During the first call, I was rushed off the phone and to another department. This was after explaining I was not trying to order groceries (which can be done online), but rather I wanted to place a catering order. The second time I called I went to customer service directly. When they transferred me to the deli, I got disconnected. The third and final time I called, whoever answered the phone sighed and asked me to hold. I could literally hear someone picking up the phone and then transferring me back to the on-hold music. Three times. I was on hold for 10 minutes. When I realized they had no intentions of answering the call, I hung up. So rude. I won't even shop here now for personal items because of this experience. At the Westlake Safeway store is amazing. It's good spot to hang out. At the deli department they got the comfortable chair & table at the indoor & outdoor. You could sit back & relax & eat your delicious food & refreshing cold drinks. Plus, They have a great produce department & meat department & bakery department, where you could shop for food & drinks & supplies anytime. Plus, you get to your 10% discount safe club card to buy GOOD stuff. The public restroom is very clean & Safe. The staff is very cool & well respectful. Came to buy 2 steaks to celebrate GS Warriors victory. The first piece had a hole in the middle. I asked for different pieces and the person in charge flipped on me and behave rude and disrespectful. The roommate and I were having lunch nearby when he realized he wanted to get some grocery shopping done. (Well, not real grocery shopping, but he wanted to pick up an item.) We stopped by on Tuesday, September 6th around 1:30pm. The roomie wanted to get some soda, so we grabbed two 12 packs each of Diet Pepsi and Diet Dr Pepper. They were have a special where it was buy two get two free, so we essentially got each pack half off. I also realized I needed some Wasa crackers for my office lunches, so I grabbed two packs. They only had the Whole Grain Crispbread variety which was fine with me as I normally get that kind or Multi Grain. The lines for an actual checker at this store were long, so we just did self checkout. Super fast and easy. Not sure why people were waiting for an actual cashier, but if you aren't using a gift card, I'd recommend doing self checkout. (I believe I saw a sign saying no gift cards at self check. Not sure if it applied to using them or buying them.) I've been shopping at Safeway basically all my life. This store isn't the best one around due to the long checkout lines, but if I'm grabbing a few items, it'll do. read more

We now do most of shopping our shopping at Pacifica Safeway. They have more people at their Deli counter and you don't wait long like at Westlake Safeway and they keep their shelves stocked. I've been trying for almost a month looking for root beer Seltzer water and multiple other items are never stocked. I still go there jus as a quickie pick up. Near the Deli there was a metal shelves stacked up against a pole and one was laying on the ground I told a self help worker I believe she called someone but No one Ever came. I even told a Customer Service agent she said she would handle it and normally customer service is pretty good at taking care of issues. I told one guy he said he was on a break and walked right by it. A little girl almost fell she tripped over it because it was laying in the walkway. Hit or miss here. I go to this Safeway only because it's the biggest one on my area and has self Checkout. Other than that, this place is quite dirty and does run out of sale items pretty quickly. I would not come here but would rather drive farther if i had to go to Safeway every week. Thank goodness for Sprouts , Trader Joe's and all the other options around this area. I dislike the parking here .... Plus they're super stingy with those monopoly pieces and the staff could use some customer service training. I had a free item on their just 4 you app. I checked out in a regular checkstand to get my free item.. and was excited about it.. only to be told I couldn't possibly get it for free. He insisted he needed to scan it twice so I didn't get it for free. It was because he didn't know how to total a $0 order. He wouldn't cash it out. It was so frustrating. I used to work at Safeway during my college years and this guy did not get any training at all! Self checkout is my savior to these types of cashiers but often most of them are not working or I need an attendant to put in my coupons. For goodness sakes please update your self checkout registers. These are the v1 machines that are now slow and buggy. A lot of the other Safeway's with these machines have the newer model and systems , which scan all coupons and work much faster! One plus is that their fried chicken is usually consistent . This safeway is nicely upgraded and actually offers many amenities that my typical safeway doesn't, including a very large variety of ethnic foods as well as a large selection of nuts/beans/dried fruits sold by weight. However, what I found lacking was personality. There was a stocking guy replenishing vegetables and he just happened to be blocking what I needed. When I said "excuse me", he just looked at me then continued to stock. Okay. Then, the cashier I lined up for suddenly closed her lane right before it was my turn....instead of helping me move my groceries, she just left me hanging and informed me to go to a different line - well, duh... Hoping the service was just a snafu....because the added variety was really a plus in my book. read more

Incredibly terrible customer service. We went in last week to ask the deli about catering options for a company event. We were told to either call the order in or place it online. We place the order online and got a confirmation on the website but never through our email or text. We decided to call a few days after to just confirm they received the order. I spoke to Chris in the deli department and he said they have no recollection of the order so I explained that we needed it by 10AM the following day. He said he would let the managers know and that it would be ready by then. I asked if he wanted to take down our email for confirmation and he said it was fine and we didn't need to. I called this morning to confirm and spoke with Chris again. He said he didn't see the order in their catering binder but I mentioned I called yesterday and he repeatedly told me that it would get done and we didn't need to give him any contact info. He gave me the excuse "we were really busy yesterday sorry" when I asked why the information wasn't relayed or written down. Now the day of the event we are left with none of the food we ordered to be catered. He mentioned that they could have the food ready by 12PM which is past the time we needed them at. I'm throughly disappointed in the staff in the deli department. Such a lack of effort and communication on their end. read more
