I am more than tired of their frankly fraudulent advertising. They advertise good sale prices (or even free items) and those items will NOT be there. They used to give rainchecks or allow substitutions, but no more. The staff has told me that some of the sale items were never stocked by them in the first place. I am not complaining because it happened a couple of times--it's been non-stop for months now. They lure you into the store under false pretenses, knowing that many of their advertised items do not exist at that store. I understand that this store may not be responsible for the advertisements, but it's wrong and it needs to stop. Time to switch my shopping to Draegers. read more

The bakery department does a decent job at making cakes. Even last minute orders are easily accommodated. My family also love their chocolate croissants. They're yummy with just the right amount of chocolate for every bite from end to end. read more

I've never been a huge fan of this Safeway. It's convenient, reasonably priced, but customer service is lacking. So when I went to their bakery for my birthday cake, I didn't have the highest expectations, but the cake was gorgeous and unbelievable!! I was turning 21and asked if they could free hand a wine glass or grapes and I wanted some lavender in there, and they exceeded all expectations! Is it possible to give less than one star?? Safeway is terrible since it was acquired by Albertsons. It's very poorly managed. I feel sorry for the employees who work there who carried over, though there are fewer and fewer. The other staff turns over weekly. And they know nothing. Long, slow checkout lines are an everyday thing. Aisles are too narrow. No room for carts. Merchandise clogs the aisles. Total bargain center feeling. Completely out of touch with the Blackhawk neighborhood. It's dirty. Poorly stocked. It's a bad shopping experience. I try to avoid Safeway as much as possible these days. read more

This place is a bit more upscale than your average Safeway. I just went for my first time today because I had to go there for a work-related purpose. Spent sometime browsing around the store and discovered it's definitely a notch up. You know you're across the street from Blackhawk. It probably deserves five stars, but the chip on my shoulder toward the wealthy people shopping here took one away. It's not the store's fault. We have lived a few blocks from this Safeway for 17 years & patronize the store regularly. We also shop heavily @ Costco (5 miles away); also visit once in a while Lunardi's (5 miles away & terrific Deli & Meat / Fish Depts), Whole Foods (rarely) & Draegers (very rarely... overpriced but many quality items). We shop for quality, value & service. After all these years shopping at this Safeway, we are very pleased. Every business can have a service / product problem and when I encountered products that weren't up to the proper standards, I returned them & Safeway ALWAYS made a refund or replaced the item on the spot; no questions. This Safeway has two All Stars on the service side for as long I can remember: Tracy & Maryam. They are both very pleasant, responsive and committed to serving you. A successful business depends on quality staff and these two are outstanding representatives. If you use your Safeway Club Card, load your online coupons and shop carefully you will have a lot knocked off your final bill each trip. The comments about the "wealthy Blackhawk" shoppers in Lamborghini's is funny! All the people we see at this Safeway are hard-working families or those retired (like us) that we also see at Costco! I've been coming to this Safeway for 5 years now. This is by far one of the nicer Safeway's I've been to. The people who work here are great. They always seem happy to work here. I've been to other Safeway's and other grocery stores and it always seems like no one wants to be there. This is also a fairly large store, which means they have a lot of items/products. Rarely are they out of stock of something I'm looking for. This is also a 24 hr location which is great! You never know when you may need something at 1am. If you live in the area, this is where you need to be to get your groceries. If you live more than 5 miles away, it's probably not worth the trip as it is deep into Danville! It's an ok store. Convenient for those living on the North East side of San Ramon as well as some Danville and Blackhawk residents. Didn't see anything particularly great. We used to shop exclusively at Safeway, but this one is getting worse, not better. 2 stars are for the liquor dept and deli. The sea food counter smells of bad fish and chlorine bleach. The produce is hit and miss. Tonight at check out, my wife hands the guy an insulated bag and two canvas. The guy stuffs the produce and meat in the canvas bags and other items in the chill bag. When questioned about it, the guy says ya, I know. My wife repacked the bags. There are better options in town. read more

I rarely shop at Safeway, but I've fallen into the habit of stopping at this one to buy flowers for my mother when I go to visit her. It's right on the way and I don't have to go out of my way to Trader Joe's or Costco, my usual flower sources. They have a wide variety of fresh flowers and the flowers always look healthy and beautiful. They have separate bunches of greenery to augment whatever bouquet I buy if it needs augmentation. The prices seem reasonable to me and frequently I get admiring comments when I walk into the facility w/ the bouquet. I have a vase I keep in Mom's room and I bring my ratchet pruners so I can trim the ends. She seems pleased. read more

I used to love this Safeway, we were always asked if we needed help out to the car, checkers smiled and liked being there. But it has been awful the last few months. The checkers are irritable (especially the rotund guy with the greasy 60's hair) and the lines are long all the time. Three's a crowd is no longer a promotion and they hate the Monopoly game. So many people are looking for jobs and these same awful people keep working there, making grocery shopping a real chore. There is never anyone working in customer service, and the place is a mess. My friend and I were on vacation from Washington and stopped in Danville for a day. We decided to buy some beer from Safeway. Both of us are 21 and were refused service because we had out of state licenses. The cashier clearly thought they were fake and did not give us a chance to say anything. She did not attempt to scan our IDs or even look at them more than a glance. Terrible attitudes by the two employees involved and just a complete disregard for customer service. Wish I could do 0 stars. This happened Friday 5/18. Please train your cashiers better so they can properly check IDs from out of state and basic customer service because it was obvious they are not properly trained in either area. read more

Huge Safeway lots of selections. The manager on duty seem like he was pretty new because he wasn't very familiar with some of the obvious prizes like the five dollars for a dozen bagels that I was charge $.79 a piece for. Had to explain to him that if you buy them individually but there's a huge sign that states if you buy a dozen bagels it's five dollars! I ended up getting overcharged and told him to give me a refund any five dollar credit for the inconvenience as the advertised signs state that. He just kind of looked at me, so I said to be honest I'm really tired I've had a long day, you can walk over to the sign that is posted in your bakery or take my word for it but either way let's get this handled so I can get going. I also noticed a bunch of the ready to go meals and deli items had expired yesterday or the same day and usually they mark them down at 50% off clearly this hadn't been done. So I did let him know he might want to take care of that, I did see him write it down on his list of to do things for the evening shift so that at least looked promising. I have been coming to this location for couple years now since I moved to the area but this visit is off the chart! If I can give zero star or negative review I would. I came here to shop around 5pm after work on Friday... First, stopped by the Deli dept and asked for a package of fried chicken and the lady behind the counter told me that they only had whatever is in the hot case, I asked her if there will be a new batch coming out. Keep in mind that it is Friday night and they are advertising $5 Friday on their chicken! Lady told me that they will not be cooking anymore said not they had to throw away the left over chicken. First, mgmt need to understand that they need to fulfill the needs of the customers' demand especially if you advertise it. Second, I know for a fact that you guys do not throw away those left over chicken, you guys packed it and put them in the cold sections. Then I went to the bakery dept and no one was there to assist to my request! Went to grab some milk and opened the dairy doors and oh my, it is so filthy and so smelly that it smell worse than my son's vomit! Long story short, after I made my rounds in the store and headed to check out, of course each lanes are 5 deep with customers! News flash, this is the time when people are getting off work and come to shop for dinner, have more registers open!! I will definitely not come here to shop anymore! Since being taken over a few years back i had high hopes Safeway would turn around their awful business practices. You know the ones consumers hate. things like pricing on the shelves being one thing and then when rung up its higher. Prices on items not labled. Not honoring corporate policies that were put in place to protect consumers. Produce and meat departments that sell things unfit to sell, let alone eat. No pride in ownership here. They cant plead ignorance as i have informed department managers and store managers who promptly do exactly nothing. Different week or month or year, same results. Either the employees are lazy or upper management doesnt care and promotes this type of behavior. I dont know which. Last week the register overcharged me. Not the first time, likely into double digits now. If i wouldnt have caught it, i would have been overcharged and Safeway would have profited. I brought it to the attention of the cashier who promptly corrected the problem, made an excuse and refused to follow corporate policy which states when a mischarge occurs the item is free to the consumer (unless its over $5). Nope, didnt accept. You would think it was coming out of her pocket. So, there is nothing new here, just a confirmation of what we all know. I use to love Safeway sandwiches but I will never get one here again. Yesterday I got a chicken artichoke sandwich and I couldn't even bite into it. The chicken was like rubber, I'm not even sure it was chicken. So the sandwich turned into veggie sandwich because I could eat the chicken. I was so mad such a waste of money. Overall a pretty nice Safeway. Recently renovated to include backlit hygiene aisles and modern electronic sales standees with TVs rolling constant advertising, it's definitely a clean and nice place to shop. Be wary of clearance/closeout local sales, however - sometimes they put expired product out at half-off. read more

I've been shopping here for 15 years. All the store & pharmacy staff have always been helpful and courteous. Majority of the time all items are in stock. I like many if not all of the employees, but my favorite is Carol. She has always gone out of her way to make sure I have a great experience. I brought back rancid meat that literally has my son in the hospital right this second and Richard Ju who Says he is the store manager would not allow me To return the meat unless I could produce a receipt?!?? Seriously?!? Imagine how much money we've all Spent at Safeway & I'm trying to return meat that even the checker smelled & said OMG it smells really bad. I am at a loss as to how Safeway treats their customers. There was a time that they cared so much about customer service it superseded all other policies. I'm going to get my sons hospital report and I'm going to contact the news and the corporate office a out this horrible experience. The staff is nice, some cashiers have worked there for a long time and it's nice seeing them there everytime. It is the suburbs, so it's pretty busy on Sundays. Sooooo.... After placing my order for a Birthday Cake over a week in advance, I assumed seeing that the order was extremely simple that it wouldn't be screwed up. Well that's where I was wrong. The only thing that came out right was the color of the icing and the spelling. Sadly, my friend had a worse experience and it looked like they needed "spell check" when they did hers. OK, back to my rant... The cake was extremely sweet and heavy. I wanted banana filling, but got white butter cream instead (what the hell???).... Even the frosting was the wrong kind but seeing as I had 2 hours before the party, I was in no shape to haggle with them at this time. I smiled and thanked the staff and went on my way. After the cake was cut into and seeing that it was the wrong flavor.... I called the bakery department and this is where they wanted the cake back along with receipt. Well, I didn't have the receipt seeing as I wasn't planning on bringing it back. So therefore, I was out the $30.00 for a nasty birthday cake. Bottom line.... I should have went to Nolan's in Pleasanton. Grrr! read more

I guess these people reviewing on here have never lived in other big cities lol because a lot of Safeway don't carry such fresh quality food as the Blackhawk Safeway. Ok. As for customer service, there is like 4 people that work there that are super nice and friendly. There is one woman there who is so rude I just experienced this yesterday and this is why I'm reviewing. She has a big loud mouth. That's all I can say.
