$5 Fridays. The chicken tenders. Regular and Nashville Hot. I get these at least once a month. It doesn't matter which Safeway I get them from. Ice Blocks, Arden and Watt, the one by Sac State, and the one in Fair Oaks. They all fry them up the same. I pick the bigger pieces because they are just juicier... with that crisp coat. Not too salty. Seasoned great. The Nashville Hot is mild but still has a nice spice-heat. The Fair Oaks Safeway in Dewey doesn't have a Chinese food section. I normally get a side of chow mein to go-with. This time I paired the tenders with hamburger buns/cheese/cucumber/jalapeno: a lemony angel hair pasta and egg salad from the Safeway deli. Oh,and a honey mustard-mayo dip. The deli people are so nice about letting you pick out the pieces you want. The regular price is $9.99/lb. Because it was a $5 Friday we got 6 huge pieces for a little over $7. One of the best deals in town. Mark your calendars and hit up your local Safeway. read more

Unfortunately, the deli department at this location, apparently have new employees or one that isn't paying attention. When .y turn came up, I requested a pound of Boars Head black Forrest ham. She asked me twice that I wanted black forrest ham. Yes, thin sliced please. Unfortunately, I didn't look at the package until I arrived home. The label was honey maple glazed ham. At 16.99 per pound it's quite expensive, especially when the package was 1.25 pounds. The ham is very odd tasting and quite fatty. I actually went to Safeway in Roseville (on Sunrise) and bought exactly what I wanted. I always prefer the Sunrise Roseville store and this will now be my go-to Safeway store regularly. I've never had a good experience at this store. But yesterday, I gave the store another try. I came in to use 2 vouchers for free Bitchin' Sauce from the manufacturer. Didn't purchase anything else. The cashier immediately told me I can only use one of the vouchers. Why, I asked. She hadn't even looked at the vouchers. She made up excuses. I said that's bullshit. She tells me to please not curse. Excuse you, when you shut me down on using two vouchers but you have no basis for it, and you're negatively impacting my already stressful day, you'll get some expletives. She finally reads the two vouchers I handed her. "Oh, these ones don't say only one." Then she tells me that I'm required to enter my Safeway rewards number. What? I said, that's bullshit, too! At this point she calls on a different store worker to finish the transaction because she can't help someone who is cursing at her. Previous trips I've had other issues with the cashiers. Can't recall details but it was their handling of my ice cream and their interpretation of the sale. Other times, I've come here for items on their circular and they've run out. That's happened at least 4-5 times in the past 4 years. I can't stand the exorbitant pricing at Safeway stores, so I rarely shop at any of them. I'm not wealthy nor do I spend my money foolishly. I'm not paying for the food thefts nor insanely high corporate pay. Only giving the second star because the store tends to be clean, organized, and the parking lot is kept up. This Safeway is located at 5450 Dewy Drive in Fair Oaks, CA. Third time I picked the incorrect meat special when trying to check out. The idiot meat department places identical meat next to their single area meat specials that sells out in 5 minutes. This is the THIRD time this has happened and the very first time, I purchased the incorrect meat and paid the retail price. When you have a weekly ad special, shouldn't they provide a Large display where there is absolutely no confusion or possibly deceptive practices intentionally duping your customers to purchase higher priced meat???? Even the check out guy said this happens all the time.....HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, SERIOUSLY!! No wonder this Safeway location has such a low customer rating which is truly a reflection of the idiot managers. When I called to complain and speak to a manager, a rude lady told me the store manager was unavailable...I then asked for the assistant manager, was told they were unavailable. When I asked for the District Managers information, the lady put me on hold, came back on the phone with his name......no phone number? So I asked for a phone number, back on hold, and was provided with a phone number that reached the Albertsons corporation and was told they could not help me. Totally frustrated........ I have been using a couple different Safeways as I have moved to North Highlands and it's now a matter of catch as catch can. The first is off Diablo Dr on Elkhorn or Greenback. It's always clean, the butcher is fast at giving service and cutting down a pork roast for me into portions for two, and their weekly specials really do stretch out budget. The other Safeway is in Fair Oaks on Dewey. I have shopped there for twenty plus years. Produce is always top of the line, Avocados are always just at peak of ripeness. Love this store. I really do love this store; it's well organized and has fresh produce and a great selection of flowers that I can buy for my wife, to make up for the fact that I work hours which are way too long--but that's really beside the point. The person I am writing about is named Nick. This happened tonight at approximately 7:30 pm. ONE lane was open; there were at least 6 people in line. I'm second from the end, and "Nick" walks by and tells the people behind me that he'll open another line (for them only!), they were a couple. When I asked about the situation, he said "oh, I was talking to them", and he walked away with them. I came into the store around 11:35am and saw the workers at the Self Checkout, the older woman working there with Blonde hair was on the clock and she kept checking the Poky machine to see if there were Pokemon cards available to buy since its on a time release. That employee is on the clock and she kept Blocking the machine so that no customers can buy any Pokemon cards. Since this is the "Safeway" closest to my home, I usually frequent this one the most. Conveniently located at the corner of Dewey Dr. and Madison Ave. in the heart of Fair Oaks, this Safeway has always been consistently a decent store with freshly stocked produce, meat, & poultry as well as above average customer service. One of the primary features is that there is an adjacent Safeway Gas Station where you can get fuel discounts for spending a certain amount. Going back to the supermarket itself, the parking lot is fairly spacious and has never been super crowded, even with a neighboring CVS Pharmacy, a nail salon, and a few small eateries that share this shopping center. One thing I did want to point out (and this has been an ongoing problem at other Safeway locations) is the lack of shopping carts. Even if I am going in to purchase a few items, the small plastic carrying baskets are nowhere to be found. However, the positives outweigh the negatives as I've never had any issues shopping here. It is more of a neighborhood market in the suburbs where the employees are way more family-oriented. More often than not, I am asked if I need any help. This includes the deli, produce area, and even the regular aisles. I also wanted to add that the pharmacy and self check-out areas have good customer service as well as the Starbucks kiosk that is housed inside this Safeway. Since I utilize the Safeway app to its full advantage, I look for Just For U savings as well as the very popular $5 Friday sales that they advertise. All of these are accessible through the app and I've found some amazing deals that you can't find elsewhere. Overall with the above average service, decent prices (especially in these times of inflation as of 2023), and a well laid-out store, I am giving the Fair Oaks "Safeway" at Dewey & Madison four stars. read more

Today my experience at this location was quite disturbing! I had to use the bathroom really bad and when I asked an employee by the name of Bud he looked at me crazy and shrugged his shoulders, annoyed that I had asked him.. horrible customer service still after this behavior I said, thank you and said nothing, then entered the pin with his hat over the keypad to the door of the restroom. I am really beginning to hate this store. There is a woman there.... I think she might be management with short blonde hair that always looks like she ate something sour and is borderline rude to the customers. I'm sorry, did you not want to take my money? The self checkout line is ridiculously tight. One time I asked if I could go around because I was behind 2 elderly ladies and it was like I asked for the world. Ok, so this review is about the Dewey Safeway Deli.. Long story short I wasn't feeling well and needed a good deli sandwich, so initially I had sent my guy to the Subway next door since I their app had a two for one deal... but the app was not working, and the manager wouldn't honor the deal.. FIGURES! So he went next door to Safeway to their Deli, and we weren't too happy since the foot longs there were $16. When we finally opened it, we were both surprised at how large it was, it was huge, and had so much stuff on it. (Subway has to limit their little dinky toppings...) But this Safeway Deli foot long turkey sandwich (with everything) was actually WORTH what we paid. It was GOOD and he had put everything on it that we asked for. I felt bad being that my order was done by phone and I was kinda snappy with the guy since I was already sick and Subway didn't honor their 2 for 1. It was a blessing in disguise tho because honestly it was the best sandwich ever, so today we went back in there, and I got the name of the guy, he said he has been there for 16 years, WOW, I told him how awesome his sandwiches were, and told the manager what a great guy he was also. This location at the corner of Madison and Dewey has been my regular Safeway store but today, I encountered a willful lack of customer service and laziness on behalf of the store employees. It has happened before but not to this level. It started with asking for a refund. I went to the self-checkout where I purchased the item I wanted to return (there was no one in customer service) and the cashier there made every excuse she could think of not to help me. Then she tried to pass me off to another employee who simply said "I'm on a conference call" and walked away. Then the cashier started saying she didn't know how to do the refund and complained that it would be a very long process. QUIT COMPLAINING and DO YOUR JOB! This morning I went and did my weekly shopping at the Safeway on Dewey. Since I'm elderly and ill I have to be strategic about my shopping and sit down frequently which is a challenge in a grocery store but in this case they had a chair where US Bank used to be. Anyway by the time I got to the checkout I was on my last legs, feeling faint and about to collapse. The wonderfully attentive checkout lady was the soul of kindness and called for a chair for me so that I could avoid falling! I wish I knew her name. Thank you so much! While I was sitting in the chair another kind lady gave me some cold water. I so wish I knew these ladies names. Thank you all. The only person with a name tag that I could remember is Will who kindly pushed my cart to my car and helped me unload. Thank you Will. In future I'll have to use the online shopping and curbside pickup. This store needs some help. I shop here only for items I cannot get at other stores because of their good selection - but the prices keep me from buying all our groceries there. My wife wanted an item called Mini-Toasts. The Safeway store on Manzanita was showing zero in stock. On the internet, this location was showing 14 in stock. So I left the first store and came here. I'm not familiar with the item at all. So I walked the whole store looking in the bread aisle, the cracker aisle, the bakery and deli and couldn't find anything. Now I start looking for employees - and made my way all the way back to the produce section and saw no one but a produce worker. I ended up going to the customer service desk and got the deer in the headlights look from the staff. Apparently Safeway is still in the 1970's in their inventory system. According to EVERY Person at the three Safeways I've been to in SAC they have NO WAY of accessing an inventory system in the store to look up items and quantities??? Another thing that really gets me is they have ONE cash register open and the self-check. I buy three items, including a bottle of wine. I am told that I HAVE to go through the register line - it's a state law for the alcohol. I get that, but a couple of the self check attendants will ring me up so I don't have to get behind five full shopping carts. So after some thinking I'll rate the store categorically: 1) Overall selection of products 5 2) Produce 4 3) Prices 3 4) Cleanliness 4 5) Availability of Staff 1 6) Helpfulness of Staff 1 7) Friendliness of Staff 2 8) Carts and Baskets availability 2 So I'll continue to go here because it's close and they have the "special" items I need. This is a pretty decent grocery store. They recently redid the produce section so it looks warmer and welcoming. They have decent organics and the produce is in good condition. They have normal selection of items, but no hard to find exotic items. It offers lottery/lotto, self check out, easy in and easy out driveways from two different streets. It is clean and seems safe. There is a small convenience store and gas station in the parking lot. For every $100 spent they offer a 10 center per gallon gas discount. Safeway grocery has gotten more expensive compared to other stores so it is getting to be less competitive, so it makes me wonder if the gas discount is worth the extra grocery cost compared to if I went to a Walmart super store where the prices haven't increased as dramatically with inflation. I drive a Prius Prime, so a gas discount doesn't go as far, so I don't go out of my way to shop for the discount anymore. Maybe that will change when inflation stabilizes. read more

The store and this shopping center has become an absolute hellhole, although it's not really the rank-and-file employees' fault. The managers don't do anything to protect their employees -- do a Google search for the Fox40 News story on the abuse that these poor people get from the homeless people living in the parking lot. That's right: the parking lot has about 4-5 groups of people living out of their cars at any given time, including a few with campers that seem to always be hanging around. Several abandoned vehicles at any given time. Seems like a no-brainer to take care of: call the security or the sheriff and have them shipped out, but management seems checked out...they just seem to ignore it. The property management company must also be pretty bad -- lots of vacant storefronts because nobody wants to lease space in the middle of a homeless encampment. read more

I enjoy shopping at this Safeway, it's safe and has plenty of goods to choose from. Prices lately are very high, I'm hoping with lower gas prices they can bring some of them back down. The only other problem is that I don't want to get my phone out to get a discount, if I see one high price for people without their phone and one for scanning some code, I just look for another product. I'm not alone in this either, a friend express the same annoyance with having to grocery shop with your cell phone. Customer service is so bad you can get free food ‍ So I went back to this location even thou I hate it but it the closest to my home. I got what I needed and went to the checkout and as usual the cramped self checkout area was a mess and I wasn't gonna deal with squeezing a cart and myself over there. I go to the only open cashier available. The guy being rung up is talking to the cashier. She flirting and couldn't talk and ring at the same time. They were talking about astrological signs and there meaning. Seriously. He doesn't have much but it's talking forever. She acting like we're all a a bar or some, not a grocery store and people aren't waiting so they can go home. Finally he's done and goes. She rings me up. I'm waiting to enter my phone number and it swipe my debit but she just hands me the receipt and says " have a nice day," I'm very confused. I tell her I didn't pay or even get to use my #for the membership card discounts. She looks at the receipt and said yes I did and got all the discounts. I do Instacart and Shipt so I literally do this 100x a week. I thinking maybe it's all blurring together bc I do it so much. She ask the another guy that works there to look at the receipt too and he says it went thru. The woman tells me I just probably need to get home a rest. Okay I get home, forgot about it. Later my kid ask for money so I look at my bank account to transfer money to his card. I see my balance is higher than it should be. The money from the my groceries has been taken out. Like $50 hasn't posted. I go get the receipt out my purse to see how much should me taken out for sure before I can give my son anything. And it for over $100! I'm more confused and scared bc I didn't have that much to spend and can't believe I went over by that much and my card let it got thru. THE OVERDRAFT FEES! But as I look at all the items on it, theres beer and some meat I didn't buy plus my stuff. But the guy in front of me did have a couple of cases of beer. Sure enough the last 4 # of the card that was used was not mine. I didn't look that closely to it before and don't remember her even telling me my total. So the guy she was flirting with paid for my groceries along his own. So in closing this store customer service is so bad you may get some free food or changed for somebody else's food. It's 50/50. This is the second time I've gotten something for free just bc the cashier was paying any kind of attention. The time it before I was doing Instacart and had to go back in the store to pay for this stuff or else Instacart would have thought I was doing something fishy or the customer could have claimed they did get there stuff even if they did bc it wasn't on the receipt. It was a pain. And no, this time I didn't go back to straighten it out. It's on them and chances are they won't be able to refund the guy his money without his card. Hopefully he figured it out and went back to get his money from the people that messed it. So many people at this store are super nice, but Kayla literally has me shopping elsewhere. Which is ridiculous since I literally live less than 5 minutes from here. She can't tell black people apart, and will come up to you and talk to you about things you have no information on because you aren't the black person she thinks you are, she always feels the need to be a part of any interaction I have at the store when I'm ready to check out. Like she will come out of nowhere and be near my check stand or the aisle I'm in. She's been a pain for over a year now, but I've had it so now the entire store will receive a yelp review for one racist employee. Maybe you follow someone who doesn't spend so much money they have 16 gas rewards?? Especially when I've seen you guys have to get on people(never anyone black) who come into the store and steal from you at night. I called HR to complain about her and she lied and said she never said the things she said, when I had a cashier witness, that should be enough to fire her. Also, they sell expired products. I had to take back a pineapple coconut water that had expired like a month prior to me purchasing it. I would like to mention I genuinely like almost everyone else who works at this store, managers excluded, but if that's how you do business then I don't care if the whole shop sinks. Nice enough store Korey the cashier very nice and engaging and welcomed us during his last40 minutes on shift. When I first arrived 8 minutes checking out with Korey, I was looking for a hand basket asked a male employee wearing a Safeway ball cap with a bad attitude his response " Go outside and get a cart" first if I wanted or needed a cart I would have gotten one.
